Today, I am blessed to have here with me a big-hearted chiropractor with a special interest in functional neurology, brain optimization, and weight loss, Dr. Stephanie Estima. Dr. Stephanie Estima studied Neuroscience and Psychology before becoming a Doctor of Chiropractic. She has been in private practice for 16 years where she is helps people achieve extraordinary health at her Toronto clinic -The Health Loft. Also, she is the host of Better with Dr. Stephanie. This show is for high performing women who want to have BETTER bodies, BETTER minds, BETTER relationships, BETTER sex, and BETTER families. Dr. Stephanie loves taking the complex science and making it easy to integrate into daily life. Every week she gives people access to world class scientists, medical doctors, plastic surgeons, professional athletes, Olympic athletes, Hollywood actors, parenting coaches, sex experts and psychologists. Dr. Stephanie is always looking to answer this question: what are the simplest things we can do today, to get better tomorrow? She is part geek, part magic, and it’s her mission to be the voice for women...Let’s get better together. In this episode, Dr. Stephanie Estima opens the show by explaining how she discovered that keto cycling could benefit your menstrual cycle. Period symptoms should not be considered normal. Instead, we should think of them as warning signs that our body needs something. Every symptom can be a vital sign of something more profound and more significant. Then, Dr. Stephanie dives deep into the menstrual cycle. She explains what you should be eating during each part of your cycle. Tune in as we talk about tracking your cycle and what happens in the menopausal stage of life. / / E P I S O D E   S P ON S O R S  PureForm Omega Plant Based Oils (Best Alternative to Fish Oil): http://www.purelifescience.com Use ben4 for $4.00 off. ☕️ Purity Coffee: http//:www.ketokampcoffee.com, use ketokamp at checkout for 10% off [00:50] About Dr. Stephanie Estima Stephanie started in the keto space interested in the effects the diet can have on the brain and clarity of thought. So, Dr. Stephanie tried keto along with her patients. When couples did it together, the male partner would always have significant weight loss. While on the other hand, the female partner would see little weight loss despite eating the same type of diet. Personally, Dr. Stephanie enjoyed her focus and productivity. However, in the background, she was dealing with a lot of menstrual issues. At one point, Dr. Stephanie had a period and it actually went well. She realized that keto cycling could be beneficial for your menstrual cycle. Now, she loves getting her period! [06:45] What Your Period Says About Your Health “Your period is the lasso of truth.” -Dr. Stephanie Stephanie says that your menstrual cycle is going to tell you about the hormonal status of your body. The menstrual cycle is a vital sign for women. If you have heavy bleeding, clotting, and sleep disturbances – then those are signs that your body is trying to tell you things are not balanced. Women need to stop looking at their symptoms as punishment. Instead, women should listen to their bodies. Thick hair could mean too much testosterone. You want to identify common patterns that happen as it relates to hormonal dysfunction. [11:05] About The Betty Body Stephanie’s new book is called The Betty Body. You can order it here: https://amzn.to/2ZfwTOh In the book, Stephanie dives into why women should stop dieting and take control of their hormones to feel amazing in their skin. A Betty epitomizes a modern-day queen, commonly associated with increased levels of self-worth (because she continues to create it). Stephanie likes to think about how to play the long game with women. In the book, she talks about how sex and orgasms are important things for women to think about. It improves all our vital signs, and most importantly, is a vehicle for self-healing. [15:45] Diving Into The Menstrual Cycle Week 1: When we think about the first week of our cycle, it’s the bleed week. Most hormones have gone on vacation during this time. FHS is still around (follicle-stimulating hormone). One lucky egg will be developed. So, it’s a wonderful week for vegetables. The first two weeks of your cycle are all about developing your follicle – you will be more resilient to restrict carbohydrates. It’s a nice week for fasting because we don’t have progesterone. Week 2: After the bleed week and into the second week, it’s the week before ovulation. Ovulation is the main event – it’s the whole point of your menstrual cycle. Whether or not you want a child, that’s what your body wants to do. In this week, we see estrogen. Estrogen is designed for growth because we want to develop the follicle. The other hormone that comes up is testosterone. In this week, your interest in sex should go up. Week 3: Week three happens after your ovulation. Now, your egg can hang around and wait for sperm. The entire hormonal landscape is going to change. Back off aggressive fasting this week. Give yourself flexibility- we are much more sensitive than our male counterparts. Add resistant starches to your diet during this week. Resistant starches are foods that will resist digestion. It cannot be broken down in the small intestine. Instead, they will go into the large intestine. Luckily, they don’t count toward your carbohydrate intake. Some examples of resistant starches: green bananas, green plantains, raw potatoes, cold rice, Week 4: Peak week! During a blood test this week, all of the things will be down. Relax on keto this week and pump up the calories. Get out of ketosis – eat squash, sweet potato, and fruit. [30:20] The Importance Of Listening To Our Body    Listen to your body and what it is trying to tell you. If you really like to increase fat on a certain week, then do it. Stephanie only has best practices. However, every woman is different, unique, and beautiful. [42:15] Tracking Your Cycle Stephanie uses Clue to track her cycle. Check it out here: https://helloclue.com. The first thing you should do is get information about where you are in your cycle. [48:15] What Menopausal Women Need To Know Women in their menopausal stage can become more insulin resistant. The cells are not as sensitive to the effects of insulin. So, women will see an increase in blood glucose. Plus, muscles will also become resistant. It will actually take more for a muscle to grow when a woman is fifty and beyond. AND MUCH MORE! Learn how to BURN FAT, Optimize HEALTH and improve PERFORMANCE with "The WHOLESTIC Method" coaching program. Debbie Potts interviews guests to discuss tricks and tips to transform the WHOLE you from the inside out to improve performance and longevity! KEY TAKEAWAYS: Women & Fasting There is some concern as to whether fasting can affect women's menstrual cycles (and female hormones). While further research is needed, any negative effects are likely related to a woman's allostatic load, as well as their starting weight, overall caloric intake, and the duration of the fast/restriction. Exercising & Fasting Research shows that people incorporating intermittent fasting (and other fasting types) can increase strength and endurance and maintain muscle mass when combined with regular resistance training and cardiovascular exercise. But, when it comes to women, doing intense HIIT workouts, CrossFit or any type of extensive exercise may cause more harm than good. Sticking to low intensity exercise or waiting until in a fed state is likely to result in more benefits. Women & Keto The benefits of the ketogenic diet are plentiful, however, the keto diet is still placing a stress on the body. The extreme restriction of carbohydrates sends the signal to the body that glucose availability is low and it needs to produce a back-up energy source: ketones. Ketosis has a whole lot of benefits, but when adhered to for too long, it can cause hormonal imbalances. Cycling the ketogenic diet and upping carbohydrate intake at certain times of the month signals to the body that it is safe. Certain supplements could be necessary here and help improve the body's response to fasting and the keto diet as well as to exercise, while in a fasted state. Simply put, in healthy, normal weight, or obese adults, there is little evidence that fasting, or the keto diet is harmful physically or mentally. Having said that, women that are pregnant, nursing, a lean female, or have a history of any medical condition should either avoid or approach these healthy practices with medical advice. We have a prominent leader in women’s medicine, Dr. Jolene Brighten. Dr. Jolene studies the emerging science of Post-Birth Control Syndrome — examining the effects of hormonal birth control on female health. A fierce patient advocate and completely dedicated to uncovering the root cause of hormonal imbalances, Dr. Brighten empowers women worldwide to take control of their health and their hormones. She is an international speaker, clinical educator, medical advisor within the tech community, and considered a leading authority on women’s health. Dr. Brighten is also part of the MindBodyGreen Collective and a faculty member for the American Academy of Anti Aging Medicine. Her work has been featured in the New York Post, Forbes, Cosmopolitan, Huffington Post, Bustle, The Guardian, and ABC News.   In this episode, Dr. Brighten opens the show discussing the digestive health issues she had growing up. Eventually, Dr. Brighten realized how big of an impact nutrition has on our everyday health. Plus, Dr. Brighten wants women to know about the enormous problems hormonal birth control can have on women’s bodies and minds. It’s essential that women are educated on the process of birth control and what other options are available. Stay tuned as Dr. Brighten discusses essential fats and what you need to do when detoxifying your body from hormonal birth control. Dr Phillips CBD Oil, Fruit Chews, Topical Cream | https://www.drphillipscbd.com/ketokamp Free Keto Guide | http://www.ketokickstartguide.com [00:20] About Dr. Brighten Brighten had digestive issues as a child. After visiting multiple doctors, someone finally realized she had H. pylori. pylori lives in the digestive tract. After many years, they can cause ulcers in the lining of the stomach or the upper part of the small intestine. Brighten treated her H. pylori. The doctor told her she would need medicine for her entire life to subside the heartburn. Dr. Brighten started doing observations about how her diet was affecting her health. She asked her doctor how her diet could prevent the heartburn, and the doctor said it wouldn’t. Brighten started to study naturopathic medicine. She liked the fact that naturopathic medicine would continually ask why.   [09:20] Focusing on Birth Control in Beyond the Pill No one is taking a deep dive into birth control. There are so many hormone books; yet, over a quarter of all women are using birth control. Women shouldn’t have to go to medical school to learn about birth control. Women need to detox their liver and body after hormonal birth control. Most people can do this in two weeks. “You only write a book if you can’t not write that book.” -Dr. Brighten Brighten wrote a book that she wishes she had when she was in her reproductive years. She had no idea what would happen when she went on birth control. Dr. Brighten went through her twenties, thinking this is how it feels to get older. We need significant changes in women's medicine.   [13:50] Common Birth Control Issues Everyone knows that low libido can happen; they just don’t know that it can happen to them. Birth control can cause insulin issues in some women. If you are on birth control and enter menopause later in life, you are more likely to develop diabetes. Always view everything in the lens that is true for you. The same pill can affect two women very differently. One woman may feel no depression side effects while the other gets crippling depression. Depending on your family history, you could be more likely to develop certain diseases while on birth control. Birth control can cause inflammation, and inflammation can change our mood. Birth control can also cause nutrient deficiency.   [20:35] Symptoms After Stopping Birth Control Getting your period for the first time is a significant hormonal shift. Birth control will stop your brain from talking to your ovaries. When you come off birth control, it’s a big hormonal transition. Some women will lose their period for three to six months. If you’re not getting a period, you may not be getting enough hormones that will protect your entire body. Work with a doctor so you can navigate your hormonal system. Your body is always detoxifying hormones. If your body is deficient in nutrients, then you may be shutting down primary communication in the body. We need to support the liver. Some women may get liver tumors on birth control. Get great sleep! You need deep sleep to recover. Think about the things that you should stop taking in rather than what you should be taking more of. Also, consider the relationships that you have in your life. Do you have a coworker that doesn’t make you happy? Pause from hanging out with them. You don’t have to ditch people forever, but you need to consider your own energy while healing.   [35:40] Saturated Fats and Cholesterol For Hormonal Health When it comes to cholesterol and saturated fats, they are healthy components of a diet. Where are you getting your fat-soluble nutrients from? They will come from eating fats. We need what mother nature made rather than what chemists made. Saturated fats are part of our cellular makeup. Fat-free is the worst thing that you can do to your hormones. There is no bad food – it’s only what works for you and what doesn’t work for you. If you’re having bad cramps, eat more omega-3s. For vegans and vegetarians – you will not have natural estrogen on hormonal birth control. Try eating algae.   AND MUCH MORE!   Resources from this episode: Check out Jolene Brighten’s Website Follow Dr. Jolene Brighten Instagram YouTube Pinterest Facebook Get Dr. Brighten’s Free E-Book: Post-Birth Control Syndrome Detox Diet Quick Start Guide Get Beyond The Pill Join theKeto Kamp Academy  Watch Keto Kamp on YouTube  . Welcome to the Keto Kamp Podcast Episode 78 with Dr. Carrie Jones   Today, I am lucky to have here with me, Dr. Carrie Jones, a functional medicine women's health and hormone doctor. Dr. Carrie Jones believes in the importance of both men and women understanding their hormones in a simplified manner so they can feel more empowered to take control of their health, especially when they are told everything is "normal." Still, they don't feel "normal."   Dr. Carrie is a Naturopathic Physician with a Master's in Public Health, having over 12 years in the field of functional and integrative medicine. As Adjunct Faculty for the National University of Natural Medicine (NUNM), she has taught courses in both Gynecology and Advanced Endocrinology.   Dr. Carrie has been the Medical Director for two large integrative clinics in Portland, Oregon. Dr. Carrie is currently the Medical Director for Precision Analytical, Inc, creators of the most cutting edge hormone test on the market, the DUTCH Test.   As a result, Dr. Carrie consults with the most fantastic health care practitioners all over the world on the hormone status of their patients, and lecture/teach/frequently write on the same topic. Understanding adrenal, thyroid, and sex hormones are complicated. Dr. Carrie's job is not to judge. Her job is to educate and empower.   In this episode, Dr. Carrie Jones speaks about common women's health issues. Lack of energy is a common complaint which could be due to a variety of issues. It is essential to get morning sunlight to combat the lack of energy. If you do not have access to sunlight, Dr. Carrie says to get a full-spectrum light. Then, Carrie explains the importance of healthy fats on our hormones. If women are not eating healthy fats, they stop ovulating, their skin breaks out, and their hair is in poor health. Later, Dr. Carrie advises on how to prevent constipation and heavy periods.   [00:45] About Dr. Carrie Jones Carrie always knew she wanted to get into the healthcare industry. In Portland, Dr. Carrie found naturopathic medicine. She learned all the naturopathic principles, diet, lifestyle, sleep, and risk-factor mitigation. Carrie uses a lot of herbal medication, essential oils, and acupuncture. She does not put herself in any specific box. There are a time and a place for surgery and antibiotics.   [05:25] The Most Common Problem With Women’s Health There are metabolic and hormonal problems. Most women’s issues will fall into one of these two categories. A majority of women complain about their energy. Dr. Carrie says there is a lot of reasons for low energy. It can be cortisol, B12, thyroid, poor sleep, etc. Dr. Carrie does a series of tests to determine what could be causing low energy.   [07:50] The Importance of Morning Sunlight Morning sunlight is light and day difference. Open your curtains. The sunshine in your eyes will wake up your brain. You have twenty to thirty minutes when you switch from unconscious to alertness. If you have overcast, it’s still okay. If it’s dark when you wake up, you will need a full-spectrum light. It will give you the sensation of being outside. Turn it on for ten minutes to a few hours. You want it within eye view – don’t just set it on the counter and walk away. When you are getting ready, set it on the bathroom counter.   [15:15] Teas for Adrenal Health and Morning Energy Licorice blends and other supportive herbs. Detox teas are typically a joke. However, many detox teas have nutritive and supportive supplements. Every morning, Dr. Carries drinks green tea. Jasmine green tea is her favorite. Midmorning, Dr. Carrie drinks macha tea.   [17:00] The Role Healthy Fats Play With Our Hormones   Cholesterol is the backbone of all our healthy hormones. If you don’t eat fat, a lot of things can happen to your body: You won’t ovulate, so you can’t get pregnant. Your skin will break out. Your hair will be too greasy or too dry. Fat will make hormones and increase cellular health. Athletes will often not have their periods. However, it is completely destroying their hormones. Which will also make it tough on the brain, skin, and hormones.   [21:35] Dr. Carrie’s Favorite Fats and Least Favorite Fats Carrie responds well to olive-oil, avocados, and fish oil. Bad fats are things like fried foods. Eating a basket of fries will not make you feel healthy. Avoid industrial seed oils. Do the best you can and take baby steps.   [25:00] About DUTCH (Dried Urine Test For Comprehensive Hormones) It’s a test in which you need to urinate on paper four or times a day. The test is handy because it will alter depending on your circadian rhythm. It will test your hormones and where your hormones are going. Our hormones have to go somewhere. We can be proactive when we learn our results from this test.   [31:40] Preventing Constipation Hydration is huge. Most people are underhydrated. Diet is also essential. We lack in fiber. Eat fiber and vegetables to move your stool. Everything can be done through diet and lifestyle changes. Get good sleep. When we are not sleeping well, we do not wake up repaired, and it slows our systems down.   [36:10] Eating the Keto Diet Without Restricting Hormones Hormones will tank out if women strictly eat keto. Women might not be doing the diet correctly. However, doing 100% keto will affect some women. Seven days before the cycle, progesterone should be the highest. People will need flexibility with the diet whose hormones are out of whack.   [41:50] Preventing Heavy Periods Heavy periods can happen because of low progesterone, iron deficiency, or low thyroid. A lot of women are not in tune with their cycle. Some women don’t know if they are releasing eggs. When we have enough progesterone, our bleeding is easy and straightforward. Some women have too much estrogen. This will result in heavy periods and lots of clots. Find out if you ovulate. Track temperatures and look at symptoms. If you want to ovulate, you need B vitamins.   [47:00] Post-Menopausal Women Once the ovaries are done, estrogen and progesterone get low. Be diligent about your stress response, self-care, and sleep cycle. Women will need to be more diligent post-menopause. If you have always had the same kind of diet, start changing up your diet.   AND MUCH MORE!   Resources from this episode: Check out Carrie’s Website Follow Dr. Carrie Jones Twitter Instagram Find the DUTCH Test Follow the DUTCH Test Facebook Instagram Twitter LinkedIn Email info@dutchtest.com Call 503.687.2050 Join the Keto Kamp Academy  WatchKeto Kamp on YouTube  $39 Bottle of Olive Oil for $1.00 // F O L L O W ▸ instagram | @thebenazadi | http://bit.ly/2B1NXKW ▸ facebook | /thebenazadi | http://bit.ly/2BVvvW6 ▸ twitter | @thebenazadi http://bit.ly/2USE0so ▸ linkedin | http://bit.ly/2PNRh40 ▸ email | ben@ketokamp.com   Disclaimer: This podcast is for information purposes only. Keto is exploding. No longer solely the province of cutting-edge bodybuilders or longevity enthusiasts and neurodegenerative disease warriors, keto has invaded every walk of life. I hear about it in grocery stores, coffee shops, spin classes, business meetings, dinner parties, morning talk shows. Judging from our blog and sales metrics, women make up the largest group of recent entries into the diet. This is great, but it also comes with a small wrinkle: Just like they should do with fasting, most women need to take special precautions when implementing a ketogenic diet. AFFORDABLE KETONE TESTING AT LAST KEY QUOTE: “I needed to reduce inflammation, heal my brain, and get my immune system in check. I knew that ketones do all those things so I started a ketogenic diet for my health.” — Shawn Mynar Here’s what Jimmy and Shawn talked about in Episode 73: - What can I do to heal my adrenals and thyroid issues while on a ketogenic diet? Do I need to heal these prior to going keto? Hey guys, I have been attempting to do a ketogenic diet since last July and it works wonders for my MS symptoms (I first heard about it from Dr. Terry Wahls). The issue I'm having now is adrenal fatigue and thyroid issues. I’m taking low-dose Synthroid, but I’m tired, nauseous, depressed, and feel cold all the time. Despite keeping my carbs under 30g total daily eating only whole foods, I have gained 20 pounds in two months. Since the adrenals and thyroid are connected, is it possible that I’m eating too low-carb for my stressed out adrenals? Or I am I not low-carb enough? You guys often say on Keto Talk that hormones dictate everything about your weight and health, but something is going on with me that I can’t seem to figure out. I feel like crap most of the time despite being on the healthiest diet I've ever eaten in my life—no gluten, no soy, no dairy, no sugar, 3-5 cups of fresh veggies, full fat coconut milk, grass-fed meats, cooking with bacon grease, and 1/2 cup of blueberries daily. Is there a way to heal my adrenals and thyroid with the ketogenic diet or do I need to heal these first before going full keto? Really love the podcast. All the best, Christy HIGH-FAT LOW-CARB, PERFECT MACROS NOTICE OF DISCLOSURE: Paid sponsorship   - The keto perspective on the What The Health? documentary - Preview of next week’s episode breaking down the misinformation shared 1. Does keto take away your period and lead to undesirable health effects? Should I add in starch every few days to deal with these issues? Hey there, I recently read this article by a naturopath named Dr. Lara Briden: http://www.larabriden.com/are-you-eating-enough-get-period-amenorrhea/ In the post, she claims that eating a low-carb, ketogenic diet will take away your period. I've still not had a period since I started keto over 20 months ago. I also developed all four of the signs she mentioned: low T3 (non-Hashimoto's hypothyroid), hair loss, constipation, and insomnia. I average 5.5 hours of less-than-restful sleep per night with sleep aids and high-dose melatonin waking up every couple of hours. I'm desperate to know how I can tweak my ketogenic diet to favor fertility. My naturopath knows very little about keto and I’m not sure she can help me. I’ve been strict keto with 20/4 intermittent fasting for a while, so I wonder if I could get away with some starch every few days to see if that helps. Between my infertility and profoundly low estradiol, it just know it has triggered my binge eating. Should I eat both low-carb and low-calorie in order to get into ketosis and see the results I’m looking for? Hi guys, I have listened to all of your podcasts, some of them twice as I’ve become a sponge with the information. My question for you is about breast cancer and ketosis. I was diagnosed with breast cancer 3 1/2 years ago and have had radiation and on tamoxifen for over three years. Cancer is what led me to start listening to health podcasts. During the cancer treatments, I put on 5kg (11 pounds) and it all seemed to develop in my midsection. I have tried low-carb and even keto, but can’t seem to get into ketosis no matter what I do. You guys have said many times on your podcast that some women need estrogen to help with weight loss, but I’m wondering if perhaps I need to be eating low-carb AND low-calorie in order to get the best results. When I’ve done keto previous about 8 years ago when I was at a bodybuilding gym, I lost a significant amount of weight very quickly. But I just can’t seem to get there now. I also take antidepressants to help with hot flashes and realize these have a side effect of weight gain. Can you help me? Jacki in Brisbane, Australia KEY QUOTE: “I just keep it simple. When cooking vegetables I'll throw in some bone broth or butter.” — Jimmy Moore MAKE KETO EASIER WITH FBOMB JIMMYLOVESFBOMB FOR 10% OFF YOUR FIRST FOOD ORDER NOTICE OF DISCLOSURE: Paid sponsorship 3. How can I get the benefits that ketosis provides my autoimmune arthritis without the unwanted weight loss that happens when I eat keto? I have been enjoying your podcasts and reading your Keto Clarity book. I started on a ketogenic diet to help with my autoimmune arthritis and I think I've been making some progress. Unfortunately, I’m losing weight and I don’t need to be. I’m 5’2” tall and actually underweight at 91 pounds. My goal is to be at 105 pounds. Despite shoveling down 75% fat in my diet, I just keep losing weight. Tracking my nutrition with an online tracker, it says my calories are higher than are required for me and yet my weight keeps dropping despite the fact I feel good. Should I choose being in ketosis and controlling my arthritis while losing weight or eating a few more carbohydrates to get out of ketosis in order to get back to normal weight again but dealing with the arthritis? Got any suggestions? I'd so love to get back some of my feminine curves again. Karen KETO TALK MAILBOX - How do I need to adjust the macronutrients on my ketogenic diet in the late stages of my pregnancy and while breastfeeding? Should I add more protein? Hi guys, Love the show! You are doing an amazing service, so keep up the good work. I’ve been keto for four months and I’m doing great losing 25 pounds and dropping my A1c from 5.6 to 5.0 in just two months of eating this way. My husband went keto at the same time as me and has lost 40 pounds. Needless to say, our doctor is ecstatic about our results. We’ve heard people joking about being careful when you go keto and normalize your hormones because it might just make getting pregnant easier—well SURPRISE, here comes baby #4! Are there any recommendations about how to adjust the macronutrients of my ketogenic diet for the second and third trimester and even once I started breastfeeding? I usually eat around 80% fat in my diet with protein around 70g and carbs at 20g. I’m definitely making sure I consume at minimum of 2,000 calories daily so I don’t stress my Hashimoto’s or my adrenals that I’ve worked so hard to heal over the past four years. Should I eat a bit more protein as the pregnancy continues? You guys will find this interesting that the way I found out I was pregnant was my ketones suddenly dropped to 0.3 after always registering 1.5-3.0 and on a hunch we did a pregnancy test. Whammo bammo, pregnant. Crazy right? I’m so thankful to be keto-adapted heading into this pregnancy and hoping it will keep my notorious severe morning sickness at bay this time around. Thanks again!
