In this episode, we turn to Food and Nutrition in the school curriculum and look at the challenges facing this aspect of National Curriculum education. Over the last few weeks, I have been fortunate to be introduced to Leith's Education and walked through their curriculum resources from KS1 to Post 16 (and extracurricular). These come at a cost (see below), but having seen them, I believe these are resources that every school should at least consider. See https://leiths.com/We also discuss how Leith's has partnered with Roehampton University to create a new PGCE course aimed at increasing the number of teachers qualifying in this area over the coming years. Alongside this, there is a Level 7 course suitable for those perhaps without a degree but with life experience and other qualifications that can assist their pathway into teaching. Leith's Education has supplied the following information:Leiths Education has been working with schools for over 25 years and has grown from the renowned culinary school founded by Prue Leith in 1975. Its work is all about helping schools deliver exceptional cookery teaching for children and young people of all ages.Food education faces significant challenges with steadily reducing numbers of specialist teachers in secondary schools, few practical cookery lessons in primary schools, and insufficient facilities and equipment in many schools. To help reverse these trends, Leiths has teamed up with the University of Roehampton to introduce two new national qualifications to help fast-track the recruitment and training of food teachers. For more information, visit https://leiths.com/explore/professional-development/Course costs (for more details, please see Leith's Education website).Registration FeeOnly for schools delivering the below accredited and life skills cookery coursesLeiths Education Standard Package £3,250Accredited courses - a total of 3 visits over the duration of the courseLife Skills courses - a total of 2 visits over the duration of the courseCookalong CoursesPer annum subscription, no limit on student numbers (no registration fee required)Leiths Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 Curriculum £395Leiths Key Stage 3 Curriculum £595Leiths Co-Curricular Cookery £595Student Assessment FeesPayable per student, this fee covers all course-specific costsAccredited Cookery CoursesLeiths CTH Level 3 Extended Certificate in Professional Cookery £545Leiths CTH Level 2 Certificate in Culinary Skills £345So sit back and enjoy Designed for Life in conversation with Maria Dunbar, Director of Education at Leith's Education. The three of them talk about Jon's role at Reach which aims to weave five important threads into their community partners' educational systems: curricular coherence, understanding the principles of great teaching, maintaining relationships, understanding the community, and strong leadership. From your experience what are some of the main pressure points school staff are experiencing? Are there any particular groups in education you feel are particularly pressured and groups that are getting less support than others and how do we improve that? Mental health issues are quite prevalent in education and have been for a long time- is this improving at all? We've discussed some of the challenges for schools in supporting good mental health, what are some more of the key challenges? How can a school underpin mental health to be within their culture and values? What are some common misconceptions for improving wellbeing and mental health? How does the mental happiness of staff impact on pupils? How does a mentally healthy school impact on retention? What are some examples of good practice in schools in the UK or internationally that we can look to? Where can schools go for resources and support with wellbeing and mental health and how can they best get in contact with you? Whether it's within schools, our personal lives, or any other professional endeavour, many of us find ourselves falling into patterns of wanting to be liked and pleasing others. When we forgo our own needs for the needs and requests of others, this becomes a pressing issue, especially when we are in positions where we need to lead. In this final episode of the third series of the Leadership Book Club, PiXL CEO Rachel Johnson is joined by experienced school leaders Mags Gee and Jay Davenport as they unpick each of their own valuable takeaways from Psychotherapist Emma Reed Turrell's life changingly insightful book, ‘Please Yourself: How to Stop People-Pleasing and Transform the Way You Live'. These leaders explore how they identify their own people-pleasing tendencies, and how, using the practical advice uncovered within the pages of this book, they can ensure they are pleasing themselves, without compromising the best interests of each situation they are leading. Emma Reed Turrell has worn a multitude of hats throughout her life, from reading English at Cambridge University, to working in sales and marketing roles, but it is her passion of psychotherapy where she holds immense impact. In her debut book ‘Please Yourself' she outlines how to care about others in the right way, and ultimately, help you better yourself, too. If we have the humility and curiosity to reconsider our beliefs, we can always reinvent ourselves. That's what Adam Grant argues in his book ‘Think Again: The Power of Knowing What You Don't Know.' Rachel Johnson (PiXL, CEO), Shayne Elsworth (Vice Principal, Bede Academy) and Ruth Georgiades (Deputy Head, Tring School) discuss the states you operate in when you don't stay curious, where the sweet spot is and how to get there. They talk about why it's important to be open, how to go about being more curious yourself and how they have helped others to be. They explore the three negative modes you might fall into when you aren't ‘Thinking Again' and how to avoid them. How are you encouraging others to be open and curious in your school? Phonics have been around for years and are successful, BUT they don't work for all pupils, and they aren't the only way to teach reading. Only 75% of children leave KS1 able to read well enough to access KS2 effectively (91% passed the phonic screen by Y2) * The ultimate goal is for children to have a bank of words in their long-term memory that they can read fluently when they see them, and phonics is a part of that journey. If you don't ‘get phonics' by the end of year one the chances of phonics supporting reading attainment by the end of KS1, no matter how much quality Systematic Synthetic Phonics (SSP) is provided, is slim. Charlie Pitt Miller joins Dale for today's podcast to discuss ‘Reading, Phonics and the Dyslexic Profile'. Charlie takes us through the characteristics of persistent literacy difficulties and how they are a barrier to applying phonic knowledge. Listen to this episode to support your pupils with additional needs to become successful readers. *gov.uk Phonics screening check and key stage 1 assessments in England 2019 About Charlie Miller From the start of Charlie Miller's career in 1991, SEN has been foremost; she trained for a BEd in Sheffield 87-91, and was a SENCO from 2002-2012. She is currently a specialist assessor and advisory teacher - mainly advising on identification of needs and next steps for learning for children with SEN – including dyslexia / dyscalculia. She constantly questions the impact of phonics and how it jars against the characteristics of dyslexia, and often checks in on data linked to phonics and reading attainment. Her 2015 MA professional enquiry and research led to the development of the Top Triangle Reading Intervention for children who have not responded well to phonics and have disengaged from learning to read. This episode, the book up for discussion is 'Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking' by Susan Cain. Senior leaders Rachel Ball of Co-op Academy Walkden and Carl Smith of Casterton College join PiXL's CEO, Rachel Johnson, to share their thoughts on how we can best serve the introverts, as well as the extroverts, in our schools – both staff and students. It is predicted that almost 50% of us have dominant introverted traits, and yet so much of our current work/school environment is built around extroverted ideals. The discussion flows around classroom setup, reframing 'quiet' as a negative trait, recruitment biases towards extroverted behaviours and utilising technology to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to learn and be heard. In this episode, Rachel Johnson speaks with senior leaders Taz Johal (Assistant Headteacher, Brookvale Groby) and Maria Williams (Headteacher, Brigshaw High School) about Reed Hastings' (Netflix, CEO) and Erin Meyer's book 'No Rules Rules: Netflix and the Culture of Reinvention'. This leadership book has some fascinating insights from business and sparks much discussion around ideas which could translate well into the education world, as well as some which might would not. The conversation covers three key areas: building talent density, increasing candour, and reducing 'controls', with lots of discussion around vision alignment, feedback, and continually developing staff. In this episode, Rachel is joined by school leaders, Dan Cowling (Headteacher, Oak Wood School, Hillingdon) and Sam Butterfield (Head of Pedagogy in Melbourne) to discuss 'The Culture Code: The Secrets of Highly Successful Groups' by Daniel Coyle. The trio talk about the insights they've gleaned regarding improving school cultures, mixed with their own experiences, after reading the book. Are you listening? This episode, Rachel is joined by senior leaders Amanda Wilson and Amy Bills to discuss Kate Murphy's book 'You're not Listening'. To listen is seen as such a basic tenet of human interactions, yet so often we go into a conversation with our ears half closed to what the person speaking is trying to tell us. Linking the books points specifically to a school environment, Rachel and guests discuss how engaging in active listening, both for staff and students, could help our school cultures in myriad ways. Interestingly, only in recent history has working hard signalled pride rather than shame. In this episode, Rachel Johnson digs into what we consider ‘hard work' in the 21st century and why we might all be very wrong in the assumption that being busy is being productive. She asks us to think about the time we allow for thinking and processing (being vs doing), and why it is important we try and carve out time exactly for this purpose. PiXL's Leadership Bookclub returns for Series 3. In this episode, Rachel Johnson discusses 'The Checklist Manifesto' by Atul Gawande with senior leaders Miriam Sechere (Secondary and Sixth Form School Improvement Education Advisor, Croydon Council) and James D'Souza (Head of Psychology, Ewell Castle School). In truth, many see a checklist as basic, and oftentimes beneath them: 'my job is too complicated to be reduced to a checklist'. However, Gawande and our trio of school leaders make the case that checklists could provide a solid foundation, from which magic can happen – be it in the classroom or in leadership meetings. How can they be crafted intentionally to reduce cognitive load and, potentially, bring about better school cultures? Have you heard of Mike Lazaridis? Probably not - but perhaps the story would be different if he had been open to change. Mike is the founder of Blackberry, who in 2009 had complete market dominance but by 2014 had only 1% market share. There are many lessons we can learn from Blackberry's demise - that ‘what got you here won't get you there'. How comfortable are you with being wrong? Jon Hutchinson is the Head of Training and Development at the Reach Foundation, an educational charity that focuses on expanding the role of schools into the wider community through a cradle to career model. Prior to this, Jon was an Assistant Headteacher at Reach Academy Felt-ham. He has taught across both KS1 and KS2, and also tutors on Ambition Institute's Masters in Expert Teaching. Jon has taken part in expert panels for the Department for Education, Ofsted and the Standards and Testing Agency. For the last ten years or so, Jon has been deeply involved in developing a knowledge-based curriculum at key stage two. Harking back to my recent conversation with Professor Michael Young, Jon describes this project as designing and creating resources and approaches that give every child access to the powerful knowledge they need to flourish, whilst reducing teacher workload and improving subject knowledge across the curriculum. But we began our conversation talking about things we disagree on - and so if and if agreeable disagreement is your thing, you'll find plenty to chew over here.
