This week: Survival plan: is Rishi ready for the rebels? Ever since his election, Rishi Sunak has been preparing for this weekend – where the most likely scenario is that dire local election results are slow-released, leaving him at a moment of maximum vulnerability. He has his defences ready against his regicidal party, says Katy Balls: the Rwanda plan, a welfare reform agenda and a 4p NI cut (with hints of 2p more to come). And while the rebels have a (published) agenda they do not – yet – have a candidate. Katy joins the podcast alongside Stephen Bush, associate editor of the Financial Times. (02:12) Next: Lara and Gus take us through some of their favourite pieces from the magazine, including Damian Thompson's Life column, and Joel Golby's notes on ⅓ pints. Then: Everyone has heard of the ‘Essex Man' that helped the Conservatives win in 1992, but what about the Hillingdon man? Journalist William Cook identifies a new swing voter in the magazine, the disgruntled Hillingdon man from sleepy Ruislip and the surrounding villages. He says that the reliably Tory voters of Hillingdon could change the habit of a lifetime and vote for Starmer. William joined the podcast to discuss. (15:46) And finally: Mary Wakefield writes in defence of Victorian parenting in this week's magazine. She says that kids these days could benefit from some 'stiff upper lip' parenting and the resilience she learnt from her time at boarding school. She also warns against encouraging children to focus on their feelings and sending them to therapy. To debate, we were joined by Jean Twenge, author of the Generation Tech substack and the book Generations: The Real Differences between Gen Z, Millennials, Gen X, Boomers and Silents—and What They Mean for America's Future and The Spectator's literary editor Sam Leith. (23:29) Hosted by Lara Prendergast and Gus Carter. Produced by Oscar Edmondson and Patrick Gibbons.

Joy Gregory (b. 1959. Bicester, UK). Born in the UK to Jamaican parents, Joy Gregory's work explores the impact of colonialism on global perceptions of beauty, memory, botany, health and traditional knowledge. As a photographer, Gregory has worked over decades in various media, including video, digital and analogue photography, film installation, Victorian print processes and more recently textiles; exploring photography as technology and as mode of artistic expression. She is interested in understanding how individuals and communities remember and interpret their history, particularly in relation to their connection to the land.Joy & Lou discuss the themes of process and practice as they have developed throughout the artist's four decade career. In June, Art on the Underground will unveil a new series of Joy's artworks at Heathrow Terminal 4 Underground station - envisaging Heathrow as a portal of entry and exit. I spoke with Joy in February, as she embarked on her partnership with Hillingdon-based charity Refugees in Effective and Active Partnership (REAP) facilitating a series of photographic workshops with asylum seekers living in hotels in the Heathrow area, as well as a community group for Afghan women in Hayes and Harlington. These workshops will inform the creation of her artwork for Heathrow Terminal 4, giving space to the stories of newly arrived Londoners, displaced people whose realities are increasingly maligned and misrepresented. The work will offer an indelible trace of the cultures, languages and hopes which coalesce in London. In the Autumn of 2025, Whitechapel Gallery will stage Joy's first monographic exhibition, surveying a four-decade practice. Thanks for listening to this independent podcast. For this week's addition to the Campfire Classics Collection, we have decided to bring back the timeless pastime of telling scary stories around the Christmas holiday. For this particular episode, we are telling the tale of "Smee" from famed author, A.M. Burgess. Burgess is a British writer, born in Hillingdon, London, in 1889. He was noted in his time as an author of fiction for boys which he published under the pseudonym Frank Lelland, including a popular series called "Tufty". After his death, however, Burrage became best known for his ghost stories. Campfire: Tales of the Strange and Unsettling is created for adult audiences only. The content and discussion in this show will necessarily engage with various accounts that include violence, anxiety, fear, and occasional body horror. Much of it will be emotionally and intellectually challenging to engage with. We will flag especially graphic or intense content so as to never put you in an uninformed or unprepared position. We will do our best to make this a space where we can engage bravely, empathetically, and thoughtfully with difficult content every week. Jane Seymour was born as Joyce Penelope Wilhelmina Frankenberg in 1951 in Middlesex, England, to a nurse mother and gynaecologist/obstetrician father. She is of Polish Jewish (father) and Dutch (mother) descent. She adopted the acting name of "Jane Seymour" when she entered show business as it was easier for people to remember (and the name of one of King Henry VIII's wives). She attracted the attention of the James Bond film producers when they saw her on British television. She was cast as the main Bond girl, "Solitaire", in Live and Let Die (1973). The role gained her international recognition but she was in danger of losing it all like the previous Bond girls, so she came to the U.S. A casting director advised her to lose her English accent and acquire an American accent to land roles on American television. She did and started getting roles, earning five Emmy nominations, resulting in one win for Onassis: The Richest Man in the World (1988) for playing Maria Callas. She won Golden Globe awards for both East of Eden (1981) and the American television series Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman (1993), where she played the title role for 5 years. She occasionally appeared in feature films, memorably in Somewhere in Time (1980) and in Wedding Crashers (2005). Married and divorced four times, she gave birth to four children and is a stepmother to two. They have children of their own, making her a grandmother. As of 2018, she has been acting in television movies and making guest-appearances. - IMDb Mini Biography By: Pedro Borges/Robert Sieger Jane was born in Hillingdon and educated at Wimbledon High School until she was 13 then she transferred to an Arts Educational School to study ballet but developed cartilage trouble forcing her to abandon her career. Something unusual happened across London in the early hours of Friday.Three of the capital's flagship, long-held Conservative councils were seized by Labour in the UK local elections.Wandsworth went red for the first time in 44 years and so did Barnet - but the biggest shock was the flagship council of Westminster, which is under new management as Labour took control after the Conservatives ruled since 1964.Although Sir Keir Starmer's party failed to make larger gains outside of the capital, the Liberal Democrats also enjoyed a strong night. Now there remains a single blue redoubt in the centre of the capital and that's Kensington & Chelsea, while the Tories also held Bexley, Hillingdon and many commuter belt councils neighbouring the outer boroughs. So what does it mean for services and council tax in the likes of Wandsworth, always trumpeting its status as the council with England's lowest rates. To examine what all this means for the country's political map - and the prime minister's future - we're joined by the Standard's deputy political editor, David Bond, who's been on the election trail speaking to voters in Wandsworth. I had an amazing time in the London Boroughs of Ealing, Hounslow, Hillingdon and Brent, as well as broadcasting Live From The Digital Battle Bus on YouTube and Instagram! I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments below on our tour and whether you think it’s right that political campaigns are being silenced by the overzealous interpretation of guidance. We face dark times, and perhaps the most difficult crisis this city has ever encountered. Every borough in London has its unique challenges and your next Mayor of London must be on the ground to understand the issues you are facing, including how: Our economy is locked down Knife crime is at nightmare proportions We have limited affordable housing Air pollution is killing our children Our mental health is suffering Our transport system is bankrupt And our very democracy is under threat Londoners deserve better. We deserve a leader who cares about people, takes action and solves problems. Together I am confident we can make London a world-class city once again. Each day during our tour, we will be hosting livestreams, filming vlogs and inviting virtual Q&A questions. If you would like to submit a question please do so here, and you can watch more episodes of Battle Bus LIVE here. #BrianForMayor | #SadiqOut

In this episode we are delighted to welcome Reverend Dr John Seymour who is presently an interim minister in a parish in Hillingdon. His previous ministry has included work as a school chaplain, teaching at a theological college and parish ministry in the East End of London. He has been involved in campaigning for LBGTI equality in the Church of England.A really fascinating and wide-ranging conversation this week. Father John tells us about his journey to the priesthood and we discuss the difference between training to be a priest and a rabbi. We delve into the thorny subject of gendered titles in different faiths, as well as touching upon gendered liturgy. In 3 sentences Father John attempts to explain to 3 Jews about the Holy Trinity - does he succeed? We also hear about the moves towards inclusion in the Church of England and how Father John experiences this as a gay man and an ordained Minister - does he see himself as breaking ground in this role? Of course, Charley gets the Talmud into the conversation in the context of leadership and how it preserves dissenting views. We hear about Charley and John's conversations in pubs - and their gatecrashing of some “interesting” parties. And it's December - so we play the game of Whamageddon (listen if you don't know how to play). Father John tells us about the meaning of Advent - and we learn that it is surprisingly heavy and similar to the month of Elul. We also hear Father John's views on the commercialisation of the season and all admit to loving the Christmas lights! See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

“I think the basis of SRM is building a program, and that sounds a bit grandiose, but building a strategy where you're helping suppliers treat you like you'd like to be treated, and also doing the same to them. There are three people on the shortlist to be the Conservative candidate for London mayor in the 2020 election. So this week, we're speaking with them.First up: Andrew Boff, a long-serving member of the Greater London Assembly and former leader of Hillingdon council, who has run for this particular gig five times now.Andrew tells me why housing targets should focus on bedrooms, not front doors; why he believes stop and search remains a valuable part of the Metropolitan Police's work; and why Sadiq Khan's war on the motorcyclist is a very real problem for the capital.Tomorrow we'll be back with the second part of this series, talking to his rival, Joy Morrissey. Emma Hanmore recently spoke at DisruptHR delivering her talk on Steve the Seed and Paul the Pip - both apprentices, one who flourishes in the garden whilst one doesn't. This talk inspired this podcast interview. Kelly and Emma talk about growth, apprentices, supporting our colleagues, and being accountable for our personal development. Do not miss this episode, we could all do with a bit of Emma in our HR teams. About Emma Hi! I'm Emma, I'm 22 (the question everyone always wants the answer to, but never wants to ask!) and I am currently an HR Apprentice at the London Borough of Hillingdon, studying towards a Level 5 HR Business Partner/Consultant qualification with Crosby Management Training. I am almost a year through my apprenticeship and have enjoyed working in both the Resourcing and Operations teams within HR. I am hugely passionate about growth and development and believe massively in the importance of self-improvement. In my spare time, I enjoy knitting, cuddling animals and watching Disney movies (when I grow up, I hope to be a Disney princess), as well as trying lots of new things - I am trying to learn the ukulele, and have recently taught myself needle felting. In the future, I would love to improve my public speaking skills, complete my Masters degree and go skydiving (perhaps way, way in the future for this one!). I am on a journey to become the me-est me that I can be, by pushing my boundaries and being a 'yes' person!

Mid-Atlantic - conversations about US, UK and world politics
Polls conducted before the European referendum – and indeed some conducted afterwards – indicated that ethnic minority voters were more likely to vote Remain. However, there is data to suggest that the strength of euroscepticism within the British South Asian population was perhaps stronger than previously anticipated.A number of areas with large South Asian populations delivered Leave votes, including Luton (56.5% Leave), Hillingdon (56.4% Leave), Slough (54.3% Leave) and Bradford (54.2% Leave). All have South Asian populations of 25% and above. It’s not unreasonable to think that such Leave votes could not have been delivered without a significant number of Asian voters opting for Brexit.I speak to Voice4Change England director, Kunle Olulode on why he and some other minorities voted leave in the referendum. This episode features two amazing guests - Clemmie and Simon Hooper, otherwise known as Mother and Father of Daughters! They tell us how they became Instagram sensations, and what it's like to be famous while still holding down your job as a midwife or whatever it is Simon does. There's some hosiery chat, in which Simon explains why he hates socks. We also discuss why most of his followers are women, and whether he can actually tell his twins apart. Then it's time for a bit of seriousness as we talk about the Hoopers' recent trip to Madagascar. We find out about WaterAid's plan to get everyone in the world access to clean water by 2030, and why handwashmongers Soaper Duper are donating £150k to help the cause. Dave Birdman starts this Thameside Radio broadcast with apologies for problems in the previous two weeks. The DTI were raiding Thameside quite regularly at this time. There are studio problems so he doesn’t have any prefade when means some awkward segues between records, the show goes well though. He tells us about rat infestations in Hillingdon and edible snails in Heathrow.Bob Edwards takes over at 8pm Thameside Listeners mentioned includeKaren Scott from Epsom Downs, David Scott (who has passed 10 O-levels),
Brand new demo for y'all!
Local singer/songwriter and Open Mic UK Regional Finalist Rebecca Payne joined us in the studio for a revamped Cool School where we talked about fighting polar bears, intense celebrity lovers and some domestic pets found themselves in grave danger. Later Seal and Heidi Klum, Simon Le Bon, Tulisa, Louis Walsh and Kelly Rowland all joined us in the studio...... in spirit anyway. Come on.... you know you want us in your ears.
Drive demo - May 2011 Come on... you know you want us in your ears.
Highlights from the week starting Monday 11th April. Dreams, nosebleeds, monkey thieves and Gwen Stefani's Japanese slaves. Come on... you know you want us in your ears.
Standing up for a lady with 17 kids on 'Harry's Got Issues', a tubby superhero from Birmingham and a bit of advice for Lindsey Lohan. Come on, you know you want us in you ears...
Cool School Guest Sheema Khan, naked Russian policemen and much more. Come on... you know you want us in your ears.
7-9pm with Paul James and The Intrepid Birdman show. Dave Birdaman (photo) has passed his motorbike test. Paul assures us that Radio Caroline will be coming back. He also tells us about a new film called Polyester (produced by John Waters). The exciting thing about the film is that it was released in in in Odorama so Paul got a scractch’n’sniff card to use at key points in the film. Sounds better than 3D. I wonder why it never caught on?We also hear from Ian the engineer. The news includes an item about 2 members of Thameside Radio staff who appeared at Marylebone court last Tuesday charged with stealing ¼p of electricity. The magistrate was more concerned at the waste of police time than the negligible theft of electricity. Thameside Radio listenerers mantioned include: Cindy of Ealing. Gary in Hillingdon. Martin Gould of Greenford and Janice. Jamie Witcombe in Colin Gardens NW9. Alan of Kingsbury for Francine. Nigel Collins from Muswell Hill.
Highlights from our interview with Singer/Song-writer Gabriella Rego. In the studio chatting about being in the finals of the Open Mic UK competition, a car called 'Hilda' and dressing up as a wizard. Take it in your ears.
Explaining how the telephone works and the finale of the Cool School Quiz for the week, with Carla as Special Guest Quizmistress..... and there's a drug-smuggling parrot as well.
A two hour show from Thameside Radio 90.2 The first hour with Paul James and Sarah from Kew, the second with the Intrepid Birdman. Bob is clearly still away. The opening by the massed Thameside Listeners was recorded at an Outside Broadcast in Hyde Park as far as I can rememeber. Paul reviews "An American Werewolf in London" which was recently released. Sarah tells us that there is going to be a Valentines party on Feb 14th. There's a pretty neat transmitter change when Dave pulls a plug out. Reception was a bit rough after this though. Listeners mentioned include Steve Scribbler. Eddie Grunt. Gary Bearnd. Les Keely. Andy from Hillingdon. Paul Deacon. Neal Stoddard (who won the competition). Radio Alpha (Mondays on 90.2 VHF). Gary Steele.
