I'm josh Cooperman and this is Convo By Design with a conversation with designer Laura Thornton about streamlining the design experience. And, this one hits very close to home. As I have mentioned on many occasions, I am working on the Tulsa Remote Design House. This is a real project, working with real designers who do not come to Tulsa. Their work is virtual and remote while the project is real. The experience of design is everything. Right? What goes into providing a wonderful experience for those who provide design and architecture services? What is more important a wonderful experience or the finest products and materials? Sometimes, there are choices that need to be made in which one must choose one over the other. There is a quote on Laura's website, “I have two things I live by: Buy things you love, they will never tire + Classics never go out of style.” But if you scroll the ‘gram, all you hear about are trends and what's hot versus what's not. We're not going to be talking about that so, tune out the noise and enjoy this conversation with designer Laura Thornton.  Thank you Laura for taking the time to speak with me. This is why I love doing this and why it is so rewarding for me to share these stories with you.Thank you to my partners and sponsors, ThermaSol, Design Hardware for your continued and unwavering support of the show and for the design community. Disinformation and culture wars are an existential problem for democracies. They foster negative feedback loops: whereby internal divisions inside democracies make us more vulnerable to hostile external actors spewing misinformation, who then exploit those divisions to create more vulnerability to misinformation, culminating in culture wars. These kind of negative feedback loops are another symptom of our era of Global Enduring Disorder.   In this week's episode, Alex and Jason are joined by Laura Thornton, Senior Vice President for democracy at GMF. They discuss how social media algorithms promote disinformation, culture wars, and a rise in contempt for experts. Welcome to a freshly picked, fully organic week in the Retail Automotive industry. Today we're on location at a Dealer-run charity golf tournament in Atlanta as we talk about GM's repositioning of OnStar. We also talk about the less-than-stellar results of a study of ocean mining for EV battery materials, as well as the x-tinction of the Twitter bird. GM is launching a new advertising campaign to position its OnStar service, known for in-vehicle safety features such as roadside and crash assistance, will undergo a transformation, with a new advertising campaign aimed at highlighting its role in driving tech experiences in the GM's lineup."This campaign is our first attempt at really reintroducing that brand role for OnStar," said Laura Thornton, marketing director for GM's digital business and OnStar. "You'll see a new look, a new design, a new messaging strategy, a different way to talk about the products in this space."The new campaign will replace OnStar's previous tagline, "Be Safe Out There," with "Better Never Stops." Silmo Bonomi, Chief Creative Officer at Campbell Ewald, the agency that worked on the campaign, the new tagline was inspired by the idea of continual improvement, like smartphone updates:A new study has shown that the impact of deep-sea mining for EV battery metals is more destructive to marine ecosystems than previously estimated after a small mining operation off the coast of Japan led to a 43% drop in marine life density in directly affected areas and an even great 56% drop in adjacent areasThe study analyzed the seabed ecology following Japan's first successful extraction of cobalt crusts from deep-sea mountains, another method of mining EV battery metals, which also had significant impacts on marine life.Ecologist Lisa Levin, has refuted claims from mining companies that deep-sea mining is less destructive than land mining and asserts that the impact of deep-sea mining extends to larger areas due to the nature of the underwater landscape. It's official, in the wee hours of Sunday morning, Elon musk announce that the company he spend $44B to buy would be ditching to iconic name and blue bird to become “X”, the ‘everything platform'. X.com was initially what Paypal was called when Musk founded it and he purchased x.com from the company back in 2017. X.com now redirects to twitter.comMusk tweeted about the transition for hours, he even joined a Twitter Spaces session called “No one talk until we summon Elon Musk,”. He quietly sat in the room after joining for an hour before confirming the change would be happening and that they “were cutting the Twitter logo from the building with blowtorches.”3 months ago the company's official name was changed to “X” and all official correspondence referenced the company as such.Hosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email ASOTU Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/automotivestateoftheunion

In this episode, I am joined by Laura Thornton, Jennifer Muirhead, and Jocelyn Polce for part 1 of our round table share and discussion on our experience.  We just got back last week from the market and we really wanted to answer the question each of us has heard before “is it worth it”. In this episode we share our individual experiences, tips on how to prepare and tricks to getting around and navigating the entire event.  Stay tuned for Part 2 coming next week where we'll dive into all of the design trends we saw!

I had the opportunity to speak with two amazing design professionals, Colleen Shier of Spruce Interiors, and Laura Thornton of Thornton Design, in another round-table talk about knowing your value as design professionals, growing and adapting your business, and creating a unique process. (Hint: they both enrolled in Power of Process) Colleen is the founder and principal of Spruce Interiors in Toronto. Her approachable demeanour and collaborative work style are as much a part of Spruce Interiors' success as her talent for creating timeless, Iivable interiors, with client service and attention to detail as top priorities. Established in 2005, Spruce Interiors prides itself on well-established relationships with top suppliers, work rooms and trades as well as a loyal repeat clientele. Laura Thornton's journey to becoming an interior designer stemmed from her childhood, where she recalls her agonizing piano lessons with her two sisters every Saturday morning. It was there she discovered Architectural Digest publications because her piano teacher's father was an architect and had an inspiring library. Laura went to University to study law and political science but quickly knew her heart and skill set was destined to be in Interior Design, where she ended up within her post-secondary schooling. She founded Thornton Design in 1999 and has established wonderful relationships with her clients, family, and friends, and loves offering her insights to inspire residential and commercial spaces.  Our conversation focuses on their reasonings for taking my Power of Process course, and their experiences. They were both in my first cohort in Fall 2020, and made a huge impact with their willingness to learn, grow and share within our community. (Community is what we live for!) Although both Colleen and Laura have been in business for many years, they both saw the value in taking Power of Process to improve their existing systems and fine-tune their internal and client-facing processes. This episode has incredibly interesting perspectives. Colleen is a solo residential designer, meanwhile Laura has a team and studio that service both residential and commercial. Being in the interior design industry can sometimes feel like you're alone on an island and joining community can be just the resource you need. These ladies have enjoyed being part of a design community that is inclusive and collaborative and has helped them elevate their businesses.  Hearing their stories and the impact my courses have had on their lives and business completely fills my heart. Colleen has jumped leaps and bounds with her business since her enrollment in the Momentum Challenge and Power of Process, while also changing her own mindset. Meanwhile Laura has changed her perspective on her existing process, which she has had for years, and fine-tuned it to better serve her clients and team. There's no roadmap to owning a business and evolving it through the years, but there are steps you can take to create a unique process that works for you right now as your foundation, which you can, later on, adapt and build upon as you grow and learn.   You can find Colleen at www.spruceinteriors.ca and on Instagram @spruceinteriors.ca You can find Laura at www.laurathorntondesign.com and on Instagram @Thorntondesign   Learn more about Power of Process and join the waitlist at www.rebeccahay.com/powerofprocess. This week our road tests feature two vehicles that have just been named finalists in the prestigious North American Utility of the Year competition for 2021. The Land Rover Defender is the latest version to bear the fabled Defender name, and it has all the off-road credentials its name suggests. Co-host Chris Teague had the chance to throw the newest Defender up against the challenging snow, ice, and muck that characterize a Maine winter. In our second road test, host Jack Nerad, who also serves as vice president of the North American Car of the Year jury, put the new Genesis GV80 to an entirely different kind of test -- shuttling his entire family of five to a drive-through Christmas display at Dodgers Stadium just north of downtown Los Angeles. Of course, he and the GV80 had other adventures as well, and we'll tell you about the new SUV's many good points and the one area in which some might say it comes up short...or at the very least puzzling. The 2021 Land Rover Defender can take on virtually any terrain, even a light spring shower. In the news segment, the two hosts dissect the just-surfaced rumors that Apple is on the verge of introducing a revolutionary electric car. And they look at what Volvo CEO Hakan Samuelsson has to say about his company's next EV entry. The pre-Christmas episode also features an interview with CarParts.com CEO Lev Peker, an award-winning business leader, who is in the process of turning his company around by providing consumers with quicker delivery and better service.  And as a public service to kids of all ages, we will interview OnStar's Laura Thornton, who will reveal a very special way to track the imminent arrival of Santa Claus as Little Saint Nick makes his annual journey around the world. The 2021 Genesis GV80 is a genuine contender in the crowded midsize luxury SUV segment.
