Hosts Josh and Jamie and special returning guest Eddie Averill (of Extended Clip) discuss the non-UNFORGIVEN entries in Clint Eastwood's self-reflective and self-implicating deconstructionist “too old for this shit” run of 1990s masterpieces: WHITE HUNTER BLACK HEART (1990) his personal, psychological and metafictional biographical portrait starring himself as John Huston during his time apparently becoming self-destructively obsessed with big game hunting while making THE AFRICAN QUEEN, and A PERFECT WORLD (1993) his sneakily complex, meditative and heart-wrenching criminal kidnapping/manhunt procedural meets buddy hangout road movie turned fathers-and-sons/justice system melodrama. Original Release Date: Monday 23 September 2024 Description: On this week's episode, Dean and Phil answer the following questions: 1) Was Vincent Van Gogh a mathematics genius? 2) What does a Frisbee have to do with airline aviation? 3) Does Phil's hatred of The Fall Guy know no bounds? Then, a review of the neo-noir pastiche Love Lies Bleeding leads into a brief discussion about distributor A24's output. The recent Chillpak discussion of Joaquin Phoenix bailing on his planned collaboration with Todd Haynes, caused Phil to revisit Todd Haynes' 2002 almost-masterpiece Far From Heaven, and the death of the legendary leading man Alain Delon led Phil to watch three of the actor's greatest successes on the big screen this week. The result is not only a discussion of Le Cercle Rouge, Purple Noon and La Piscine (aka The Swimming Pool), but a full deep dive into "heist" pictures, film critics, and more.

An unlikely pairing made in cinema heaven! We indulge ourselves with some fine genre fare this week. First up, Le Cercle Rouge (1970), directed by Jean-Pierre Melville, and then Zombie Flesh Eaters aka Zombie (1979), directed by Lucio Fulci. We will call out Spoiler Territory for both films, so if you want to skip ahead from that point in Le Cercle Rouge, you can rejoin the conversation at the 52:40 mark to avoid spoilers. And Spoiler Territory ends at the 1:39:22 mark for Zombie Flesh Eaters. Savour the CINEMA! Theme music: "The Cold Light of Day" by HKM. Check out HKM on #SoundCloud or Bandcamp
Our Aussie invasion continues with this week's guest, film critic and podcaster extraordinaire, Blake Howard, the mastermind of One Heat Minute Productions. Blake joins us to talk about unhealthy relationships with movies and his love for the films of 1970, from the gallows humor of “M*A*S*H” to the working class heroism of “Five Easy Pieces” to the unequalled cool (and Frenchness) of “Le Cercle Rouge.” Become a member for Bonus Episodes, personal stories of working in the industry, and yes - EVEN MORE MOVIES. https://plus.acast.com/s/a-very-good-year. A master thief, an escaped criminal, and an alcoholic former policeman walk into a jewelry store. No it's not a bad joke- it's The Red Circle. This week Leo and Charles are talking about Jean-Pierre Melville's classic. For The Vault Leo takes us back to 1985 with Richard Donner's adventure with misfits The Goonies. Charles is excited to take a wormhole to his Vault pick of Christopher Nolan's Interstellar. But the main take is 1970'S The Red Circle or as the French say, Le Cercle Rouge. It's a classic for sure, where Leo and Charles discuss the similarities it has to Rififi, using a marksmen to disarm the security, and the necessity of having a “fence” in on the heist. It's a lot of fun chatter when the movies are this good and Scene Stealers is happy to hit 40 episodes…Give a listen.
Returning to Watch With Jen this week, we have my very talented friend and an official (and very popular) friend of the show. William Boyle is the acclaimed novelist behind such titles as Gravesend, The Lonely Witness, A Friend is a Gift You Give Yourself, City of Margins, and Shoot the Moonlight Out. In addition to crafting these wonderfully humanistic Lumet-like character-driven ensemble crime epics, Bill is quite the pop culture buff and one hell of a good movie trivia game player too. Although he's a distinctly American writer-, given that he sets his sometimes interconnected tales in Brooklyn neighborhoods, Bill has quite a following for his work in France where he routinely visits for appearances and book events. Knowledgeable in his love of film, and continuing to foster his keen interest in the country, its people, as well as its cinema, this episode seemed like the perfect starting point for a new series that Bill & I will be revisiting in the future that's devoted to our love of French Crime Movies. To kick us off, Bill bypassed some of the most obvious iconic titles like ELEVATOR TO THE GALLOWS, RIFIFI, PURPLE NOON, and LE CERCLE ROUGE, and selected slightly deeper cuts from the '50s, '60s, and '70s respectively. In this fascinating 86-minute installment that we're calling Part 1, we explore the films TOUCHEZ PAS AU GRISBI, SHOOT THE PIANO PLAYER, and MAX & THE JUNKMEN, while also championing other titles you'll want to be sure to jot down.
We continue our trip Around the World in Twenty Films with a stop in France, where we look at a couple of films largely from the criminals' point of view. We start with 1960's Breathless, Jean-Luc Godard's innovative film starring Jean-Paul Belmondo and Jean Sebring. Belmondo plays a criminal on the run who spends some time hiding out with an old girlfriend. Some of the foreign posters kind of give away the ending to this film, but it's doubtful that this conclusion would come as a big surprise to most viewers, anyway. In Part Two we jump to 1970 to review Le Cercle Rouge. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/wordsandmovies/support
In the second half of our show, we look at Le Cercle Rouge, from 1970 and directed by Jean-Pierre Melville. It's an epic-length film about a jewelry heist that will keep you guessing up until the very end. COMING ATTRACTIONS: We reach the halfway mark with our world tour as we go to Germany. The films we're screening show different ways that the Germans confront their past. First up is The Lives of Others, a 2006 drama that takes place on the other side of the Berlin wall. Then we move forward two years to review The Baader Meinhof Complex. You may have heard of the Baader Meinhof Phenomenon, which oddly enough is only loosely related to this film. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/wordsandmovies/support
In this half of the episode, we take a hard look at Performance, the 1970 film starring James Fox and Mick Jagger. They, along with Michele Breton and Anita Pallenberg, create a quartet that gets mixed up in drugs and sex to the point where minds are shattered. Most of the last 15 minutes of the film, we guarantee you will not see coming. COMING ATTRACTIONS: In Episode 54 we go to France and review two movies that have crime at their center. From 1960, it's Jean-Luc Godard's Breathless, followed by Le Cercle Rouge, from 1970 and directed by Jean-Pierre Melville. We spend perhaps more time than necessary musing on the ending to Breathless. Come join us in the confusion, won't you? --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/wordsandmovies/support

To make up for the lack of an episode last week, we're looking at 2 films this week and uploading early. Le Cercle Rouge (1970) is a French heist film by Jean-Pierre Melville and The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes (1970) is a Billy Wilder film that does pretty much what it says on the tin. Find out our opinions on these films and why we've been so damn busy in this episode of the Golden Talkies Podcast!
Welcome to the Long Flight Film Podcast where two guys from across the globe talk about some movies. In this episode, we discuss, Le Cercle Rouge, Mishima: A Life In Four Chapters, Borat 2 & The Trial Of The Chicago Seven, along with some movie news from the last two weeks!

We conclude our dalliance with Jean-Pierre Melville with 1970's Le Cercle rouge, a heist film with an impressive cast of Alain Delon, Gian Maria Volonté, and Yves Montand. We discuss how genre conventions operate in the film - the shortcuts an understanding of genre provides allow details to make the difference, Mike suggesting that it all comes out through character relationships and quirks. In discussing Le Cercle rouge, we think back on what we've learned about Melville's style, themes and interests. For Melville, emotional attachment is dangerous and makes one vulnerable; it's a rather bleak outlook, but José argues that his films aren't without their romantic aspects. Mike remarks upon the way in which Melville's style has been interpreted and appropriated by the filmmakers he influenced, noting that the vivacity with which, for instance, Quentin Tarantino effuses about Melville is not reflective of Melville's films themselves, which are slower and more pensive than you might be led to expect. To José, it's existentialist cinema through and through, and, naturally, he loves it. Recorded on 10th April 2020.
In our 188th episode we're talking spine #218 in the Criterion Collection: Jean-Pierre Melville's LE CERCLE ROUGE from 1970. Leaving the loneliness of the Japanese countryside, Tom and Chris find themselves crossing paths with a trio of men (two convicts, and one an alcoholic ex-cop) as they plan to execute one of the most daring heist in Paris history.
Vi snakker om Alain Delons kule rolle og den dystre stemningen i filmen. Aleks havner på en tangent om den franske nye bølgen før vi blir avbrutt av et teknisk problem...
"Poor Gaspard" Like an extended version of the heist scene from Le Cercle Rouge, but with more slaps. More pate and smoked fish than an episode of Chef's Table. The guys watch their final film of their Jean-Pierre Melville Five where they see a return to what he does best. It's a swirl of his previous films where criminals are going to team up to take part in a diamond heist while keeping away from the cops. It even stars Mr. Le Samourai himself, Alain Delon! But does Le Cercle Rouge suffer from being compared to the previous accomplishments? More serious men, more unpronouncable names! We're discussing Jean-Pierre Melville's Le Cercle Rouge. Cool and precise doesn't even begin to describe it. He's a one note filmmaker, but what a note... Must be the moody French atmosphere that's got us so hyper This is The Recommendation Game, a weekly podcast where two film lovers take turns to recommend a film the other has not seen, they watch and then meet to discuss it. Jean-Pierre Melville makes iconic striking gangster films that make no sense.
Strongly opinionated but never dogmatically so, the prolific Vadim Rizov ranks among the best of the new generation of cinephiles in Peter's opnion. So the young writer joins him to discuss his unique voice in the critical community. Vadim discusses his early forays into cinema at a young age, and how his frustrations with Austin's film scene led him to New York (only to more frustrations at NYU). The two then get into his fascinating writing style and how it stands against the majority of contemporary film writing, his interest in the evolving contemporary cinema, and why he goes back again and again to the True/False Film Festival. The two then dive into Jean-Pierre Melville's Le Cercle Rouge, a type of closed circuit movie that might be out of style with many cinephiles today, but is full of wondrous pleasures for those that pry its pieces apart. 0:00-1:05 Opening1:55 -5:50 Establishing Shots - Roberto Rossellini's Voyage to Italy / Trivia Round6:34-56:56 Deep Focus - Vadim Rizov57:49-1:20:04 Double Exposure - Le Cercle Rouge (Jean-Pierre Melville)1:20:06-1:22:22 Close / Outtake
