So the next six episodes including this one were all recorded at the Toronto International Film Festival! For the first episode of Best Girl Grip goes to TIFF, I spoke to Dorota Lech, a Polish-born and Toronto-based film programmer who became the Lead Programmer of the Discovery section this year. She has worked for TIFF since 2013, and also produces the Hot Docs Forum, a pitching event aimed at garnering financing for international documentaries, at Hot Docs, North America’s largest documentary festival. Dorota previously held positions at the National Film Board of Canada and Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival. This year the Discovery programme for TIFF had 37 films from emerging filmmakers who represent 35 countries and 54% of the films selected were directed by women. I spoke to Dorota about how she discovered programming herself, what the selection process looks like, how you market emerging filmmakers in a very busy festival line-up and what her proudest programming moment has been.

Well Greg Dziemidowicz is Director and Lead Programmer at Melbourne's MarineVerse and along with his crew of sailing VR developers have done just that. There is a big federal election happening and for YEARS government support for Australian game development support hasn't been on the agenda. The opposition Labor Party have announced a big $25m reinstatement of the Australian Interactive Games Fund (AIGF), the Australian Greens want to put $100m into the industry. The original run of the AIGF was cut short when the Liberal-National Government came to power but not before funding a number of well known studios were able to access the fund like Defiant Development, Tin Man Games, SMG Studio and Black Lab Games. We discuss what this will mean if the funding is reinstated if there is a change of government! Pixel Sift is produced by Scott Quigg, Sarah Ireland, Fiona Bartholomaeus & Mitch Loh. Film critic David Ansen has had one of the most unique and influential careers in modern entertainment history. He joins his high school classmate Bob and Suzanne in a revealing and engaging conversation that starts with a childhood growing up in Beverly Hills as the son of a Hollywood industry insider. You’ll hear about David’s early fascination with movies and how even as a pre-teen he began documenting that interest as the ultimate “list maker.” Going from undergrad writing studies at Harvard, to life on a commune, and then to writing about movies for Boston’s The Real Paper, David then found himself recommended as film reviewer at Newsweek by no less a luminary that legendary film critic Pauline Kael. During his 31-year career at Newsweek, David Ansen became one of the most powerful voices in modern film criticism. His lifelong love of movies was matched by an insightful worldview and a writing style that made many of his reviews more entertaining than the movies he reviewed. When David Ansen wrote favorably about a movie, people bought tickets. A negative review would often have the opposite effect, although in this conversation David humorously reveals the one film he describes as “an unkillable movie.” With unique industry knowledge and deep analytical perspective, David talks about today’s rise of quality TV shows as compared to the trend toward major studio “franchise” movies which fail to capture his attention. After a career as Senior Editor at Newsweek and writing numerous television documentaries about Hollywood legends Greta Garbo, Groucho Marx, and Elizabeth Taylor--winning the Ace Award for All About Bette Davis—David moved on to work with The New York Film Festival, the Sundance Film Festival, and recently served as Artistic Director of The Los Angeles Film Festival. His newest assignment as Lead Programmer for the 2016 Palm Springs International Film Festival guarantees his ongoing influence in the world of serious filmmaking. If you like movies, you don’t want to miss this revealing conversation with David Ansen.
We continue our conversation with Jonathan, the Lead Programmer and Co Founder of Grinding Gear Games.
The art of rocket jumping is something show host Chris ORegan first encountered in Doom. Never did he ever consider that someone would make a platform game that would use this as a base method of actually moving. Candescent Games has proven Chris wrong by making Tinertia, a platform game that has no jump mechanic and relies entirely on the use of rockets to move the little robot that is the main protagonist of Tinertia. Chris is joined by Lead Programmer and founder of Candescent Games Vilas Tewari to chat about Tinertia and many other things. http://media.blubrry.com/caneandrinse/caneandrinse.com/sausage/TSF_Episode71.mp3 The Sausage Factory 71 was edited by Chris O'Regan
