A fire at an electrical substation near Heathrow Airport caused a major power outage, leading to flight cancellations and disruption for thousands of travelers. The incident occurred before midnight on Thursday, prompting airport officials to halt operations for safety. The London Fire Brigade responded with 10 fire engines and 70 firefighters; they contained the fire and will conduct ongoing safety inspections. Energy Secretary Ed Miliband reported that the main power supply and backup generators failed, affecting operations for about 200,000 travelers expected on Friday. The National Grid worked to restore power, with over 62,000 customers reconnected by morning, but many remained without electricity. Investigators assessed the cause of the fire, and counterterrorism detectives were brought in due to the disruption's impact on national infrastructure. Long-haul flights diverted to alternate airports, and significant delays affected short-haul flights. Approximately 4,000 tons of cargo became stranded due to the closure, complicating logistics for businesses. Even with a potential resumption of operations by Saturday, ongoing effects are expected to disrupt travel.Learn more on this news visit us at: https://greyjournal.net/news/ Hosted on Acast.   In this episode, I'm joined by writer Thomas Sharp.   His creative life is a blend of commercial commissions and self-initiated projects, each shaped by his deep fascination with language.   You might have seen his words without realising it. Love is Running Towards — his piece for the London Fire Brigade. Or the vast banners welcoming visitors to the British Library. Other clients range from the spectacle makers Cubitts and The Henry Moore Institute to Politico UK and St Martin-in-the-Fields Trust.   But beyond his commissions, Thomas has spent much of his life thinking about the wonder and power of writing, what it can do, and how it moves us. He's distilled that exploration into four words: Language, Consciousness, Magick, and Romance, a phrase that defines his life's work and the title of his latest collection of poems.   So, in this episode, we explore why Language, Consciousness, Magick, and Romance matter.   Links https://www.thepoetryofitall.com/thomassharp https://www.instagram.com/thomassharp/

Episode 38 of the Fire Safety Matters Podcast includes Mark chatting with James Pecz, head of global business development at Ramtech Electronics, the Nottingham-based developer of wireless electronic solutions. James focuses his attentions on fire safety regulations in the UK, a comparison of standards on home shores versus the rest of the world, the overriding requirement for early detection systems in tandem with emergency evacuation and the steps that can be taken to improve fire safety regimes on construction sites. Once again, Brian and Mark analyse the key stories emerging from the industry at present. On this occasion, there's an assessment of Warringtonfire's new £24 million Birchwood Park testing facility that has been recognised with a Considerate Constructors Bronze Award in partnership with main contractor Tilbury Douglas. Also, there's a focus on AXA Commercial's advice for businesses in the capital to review their fire risk assessments and staff training in the wake of the London Fire Brigade announcing that it will no longer respond to daytime activations of automatic fire alarms in most non-residential buildings from October. Further, Mark and Brian examine the launch of the Institution of Fire Engineers' Early Careers Networking Group and look back on the Fire & Security Matters Awards 2024, which ran at the CBS Arena in Coventry on 12 June, drawing a record number of entries and attendees.

We could have an endless debate over the definition of suffering and what constitutes hard. And there are a lot of vague and dismissive things that are said on the topics, such as ‘There's always someone that has it worse than you.”, ‘Look for the silver lining', ‘Everything happens for a reason', or ‘Whatever doesn't kill you, makes you stronger' but no amount of perspective on severity, or validity changes your personal reality at any given moment. You are faced with what you are faced with, you are experiencing that thing or litany of things in the way that you are, and over whatever internal or external time frame that has been imposed on you, it needs to be survived if you are going to. That's it. Just stay in it and fight to get more wins than losses over time. This is what goggins means when he tells you to ‘stay hard'. You don't have to have a great attitude about it, and the root problem or problems may not be solved, but take the steps you can towards it or through it and chalk up another time you were the type of person that acted in the face of something difficult. Show yourself that you can, remind yourself of the times you have before and then show yourself again. My guest this episode is a tremendous resource of hope and possibility in the face of adversity. Yet another powerful example of navigating difficulty as an imperfect human in a complex world. It's a pleasure to bring you Ricky Nuttall Ricky is a Firefighter with the London Fire Brigade and was one of over 250 first responders who were called to the fire at Grenfell Tower, on the 14th of June 2017. The fire tragically claimed the lives of 72 residents and injured over 70 more. He suffered from PTSD as a result of the life-changing decisions he had to make that night, as well as carrying the weight of previous traumatic incidents over a long career. With a new perspective, He's now a mental health advocate and public voice, focusing on raising awareness of the importance of social and workplace mental health and well-being. https://www.justrick.co.uk/ @rickynuttallofficial Sponsorship: @southwest_fire_academy Editing: @bradshea Marketing: @premiummixmarketingco Administration: @haileyfirefit

On International Women's Day we talk to the foreign secretary, James Cleverly MP, as he travels to Sierra Leone to launch the UK's new international women and girls strategy. Dr Sabrina Cohen-Hatton is one the most senior fire fighters in the UK. The current Chief Fire Officer of West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service has in her 22 year career covered major incidents such as the London Bridge terror attack, the Finsbury Park terror attack and the aftermath of Grenfell. Last month on Woman's Hour we discussed the fire service after recent reports hit the headlines of allegations of bullying and sexual harassment of female fire fighters at different services. Last year, an independent review found the London Fire Brigade to be institutionally racist and misogynistic. Just seven percent of fire fighters are women and there are even less in high leadership roles. Sabrina joins Nuala to talk about her new book The Gender Bias The Barriers That Hold Women Back, And How to Break Them, which unpicks why women are judged differently, and how we can tackle those biases, and also tells us whether she thinks the fire service has a problem with women. Sunday marked the end of the European Indoor Championships in Istanbul, a golden weekend for Team GB women. Keely Hodgkinson retained her 800m title before team captain Jazmin Sawyers won a long jump Gold, earning her a first major title of her senior career with a world-leading jump of seven metres. Jazmin now holds the British Indoor record and joins Nuala. What is it like to be a poet, a woman and a performer of poetry at this particular moment in time? Kim Moore aims to answer this question in her new book Are You Judging Me Yet? Poetry and Everyday Sexism. The book contains poems from her collection All the Men I Never Married, for which she won the Forward prize last year. She explains to Nuala McGovern why poetry is the perfect medium for exploring sexism.

A damning report into the culture of London Fire Brigade found a toxic mix of racism, sexism, misogyny and bullying. Launched after a young firefighter of colour took his own life, the review included terrible anonymous accounts from those serving in the capital, women groped during exercises, a black man who had a noose left on his locker. Now File on 4 has discovered shocking new evidence of problems within the fire service elsewhere across the UK. We hear from those subjected to sexual assault, violence and bullying while working on the frontline, left suicidal as a result of the treatment they suffered at the hands of colleagues and those who were hounded out or chose to walk away from a career they loved. Nuala McGovern talks to Irish actor Jessie Buckley about her new role as one of an extraordinary ensemble cast in the new film Women Talking. Based on the novel by Miriam Toews, it follows the women of an isolated religious community as they grapple with a huge decision they have to make, as a collective, following the discovery of male violence. Could God go gender neutral in the Church of England and no longer be referred to only as "he" but also as "they" and "she"? Rev Martine Oborne chair of Women and the Church which campaigns for "gender justice" in the church and journalist Anne Atkins discuss. Research estimates 1 in 5 women will lose a pregnancy in their lifetime and 1 in 20 will go through it more than once, but no official record is kept of how many miscarriages happen each year. After losing four pregnancies in the space of two years, with no obvious cause, Jennie Agg set out to understand why miscarriage remains such a profoundly misunderstood, under researched and under acknowledged experience. She has written about it in Life, Almost, which documents her path to motherhood and her search for answers. Dorset Police are investigating allegations that firefighters at Dorset and Wiltshire Fire Service had taken photos of women who had died in car accidents and shared the images on a Whatsapp group. In the group, male firefighters are alleged to have made degrading comments about the victims. Several female firefighters also spoke of sexual harassment, including claims a male firefighter demanded sexual favours at the scene of a fire. Nazir Afzal, the former chief prosecutor for North West England who carried out an independent review into the London Fire Brigade last year and Zoe Billingham, former head of the Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire and Rescue consider if the fire service has a problem with its culture, and in particular women. The London Fire Brigade is "institutionally” misogynist and racist, according a report into its culture. The review, conducted by the former Chief Crown Prosecutor for north-west England, Nazir Afzal, concludes that unless the "toxic culture" is tackled other firefighters will take their own lives. The independent review was established by the London Fire Commissioner after a trainee firefighter took his own life in August 2020. Today's Martha Kearney spoke to Mr Afzal, who told her that he believed the issues he uncovered are common in other fire services. He added he was approached by other fire brigades and organisations as he undertook the review. Martha also spoke to the Commissioner of the London Fire Brigade Andy Roe, who said there was no place for discrimination, harassment and bullying in the brigade.

The London Fire Brigade had its busiest day since the Blitz as record temperatures led to hundreds of fires across the city. When it finally rained a month later, the Met Office warned of flood risk. But after a dangerously hot summer, we're now worrying about whether we can afford our energy bills during a long, cold winter. This was the year that the climate crisis collided with the scandalously high cost of living. But how are the two related? Why are fossil fuel companies making bumper profits while the rest of us are worried about paying our bills? And can we stay warm while making sure oil and gas stay safely under the North Sea? London Fire Brigade has 2 fire boats,  the Fire Dart and Fire Flash. They are moored at Lambeth river station and are used for a variety of incidents, such as people stranded in the River Thames, fires on boats, crashed boats, and riverside property on fire. What is a Fire Boat....basically A fire engine on the water. LFB's current fire boats were specially built for them. They are a class of boat called a ‘Wave Patroller', and each has a slightly different specification.Fire Dart and Fire Flash are both fast twin-engined, single-hulled landing crafts. They have been designed with shallow draft – a flat bottom – for use on rivers and inland waterways. Both have a reinforced keel, so they can ‘beach' the boats on the Thameside and lower the access ramp without harm.Fire boat statistics:Their Top speed = 30 knots – 33 mphFitten with 2  Water pumps = 2 x Hamilton 291 water jetsA max Water supply = 1800 litres per minute Each Fire boat has a crew of four led by Crew Manager The fire boats launched 147 times in 2017, though it varies from year to year. One of the most famous fire boats – the retired Massey Shaw – is credited with saving over 500 lives as one of the ‘little ships' fleet at Dunkirk. Like their current fire boats, she has a relatively flat hull so was able to get closer to the shore. This meant many soldiers could wade out and climb aboard, to be ferried to the larger ships. She was the only boat in the fleet to make three trips to the beaches, and was crewed by firefighters who volunteered for the dangerous rescue mission.A big thanks to our partners for supporting this episode.
