Thesewaterers save money on energy bills and keep the animals comfortable. • LED Exterior Lighting (2023)o Replaced exterior lights with LED lights. LEDs make outdoor areas safer for everyoneand last longer, reducing the need to replace them as often.• Refrigeration Heat Recovery (RHR) System (2020)o Installed an RHR system that takes heat from the milk-cooling process and uses it towarm water for the farm. Marathon County is working hard to save energy. In 2025, more than 100 local businesses,manufacturers, schools, hospitals, and farms improved the efficiency of their facilities with supportfrom Focus on Energy.Farming has played a major role in this achievement. Last year, 62 farms in Marathon Countycompleted more than 180 energy-saving projects, resulting in $325,000 in total savings. Theseupgrades help family farms lower costs and stay strong for the future. No Joke Dairy is a fifth-generation family farm in Marathon County that has belonged to the Redetzke family since 1911. Otto and Ottelia Redetzke built the original barn, and the farm has remained in the family for over a hundred years. Although the family stopped milking cows in 2011, brothers Matt and Sam Redetzke chose to start the dairy again in 2015. They restored the herd and brought the farm back to life. Now, four generations work side by side, making it a family-run farm. The farm cares for 400 cattle in total, including young animals, and has a milking herd of around 200 Jersey cows. The Redetzke family also grows crops on 660 acres to feed their animals, keeping the farm self-sufficient. Although it's a dairy operation - the beef tent will at the show will help attendees understand what's happening with beef production in the state and beyond. She notes that the U.S. cheese price remains competitive globally, and we'll need the international sales to stay robust. The loss of a crop is awful. The loss of a tradition, even more painful. This year's erratic weather has caused some Wisconsin strawberry growers to rethink their plan. Kiley Allan gets the story from Danielle Clark of Mayberry Farms in Mayville. Their strawberry harvest is over before it started. They have pick-your-own strawberries, honeybees, row crops, and a newly planted apple orchard, backyard livestock collection of chickens and show lambs, makes skincare with farm grown ingredients such as strawberries, beeswax, tallow and lard. Agronomist believes Phytophthora attacked their plants - putting an end to their season before it started. Clark says they had a little last year, but removed diseased plants but because soil doesn't drain well and the spring was cool and wet it accelerated it to a total loss. One of their brand pillars is authenticity, so Danielle felt it was important to give the community an open and honest announcement that they would not have pick your own strawberries this year. She felt it was important to give enough time to digest the information and determine where they will go instead. The farm was met with an overwhelming amount of support from the community. The farm will convert the affected soil to an apple orchard expansion. Rain is just starting to move into Wisconsin this morning. Despite challenging weather conditions, Wisconsin potato growers still could take to the fields! While they may be focused on day-to-day planting chores, they can't help but wonder how their market will look by harvest. Ben Jarboe does a deeper dive on the situation with Tamas Houlihan, executive director of the WI Potato and Vegetable Growers Association. Houlihan says there's been some market disruption on the west coast that could impact Wisconsin prices. One example he uses is potatos used for chips. Most of those potatoes grown in the west would be bound for the international marketplace. However, China has increased the number of chip potatoes they're producing to displace many of those acres. Yes, another frosty start to a May morning. Stu Muck says the chance of frost starts to lessen after today. Rain, however, is also in the forecast by mid-week. The question is how much. Up in Marathon County, one historical society is bringing the Christmas traditions of the 1920s to life. Almost 100 years ago, the Yawkey family celebrated Christmas in their Wausau home. Now, visitors to the now Yawkey House Museum can step back in time and experience it too. Sitting down for a hot meal with loved ones is a luxury that most of us have every day. But for Wisconsin's rural seniors who may be homebound, isolated, and unable to prepare their own food… the story is different. Ronda James is the nutrition program director at the Aging and Disability Resource Center in Central Wisconsin. They serve Langlade, Lincoln, Marathon, and Wood counties with the Meals on Wheels program. Just last year, their small team and 350+ volunteers delivered 145,000 meals to more than 1,300 residents. Unfortunately, James says their costs have gone up about 30 percent as the demand for the program also grows. She says Wisconsin's older population (60+) has skyrocketed in the past decade. Nearly a third of that entire population is rural. James says the Meals on Wheels program would not exist without volunteers. Delivery routes sometimes creep up to 60 miles in total. That's 30 miles from a "city center" such as Merrill, Antigo, or Wisconsin Rapids. Marathon County is the largest geographic county in Wisconsin, so it's hard to reach the farthest corners of the county with volunteers because it takes 80-100 miles in a day, James says. With this farm celebrating just over 100 year Michelle's great great grandfather moved to America with his wife and son to start a farm in Wisconsin in 1891. And then in 1919-1920 Leo Michell's Great Grandfather bought the farm they have now from the Moore and Galloway Lumber company.  At this farm they raised registered guernseys, beef, pigs, and chickens. Then in 1971 Michell's Dad and Grandpa made many improvements and renovations to the farm. where they milked Holstein cows.  Then when Michelle grew up she started to begin her own herd of registered Holstein cows and milked until they sold out in 2012. Which despite the cows being gone they still farm cash crop today.
