Marie highlights the broader implications of this decision, calling for professionalism, better conflict resolution, and industry-wide transparency. This podcast encourages listeners to consider the long-term effects of such moves on the wrestling business.Bullet Notes:Incident Overview: Mercedes Moné requested JD from New York's removal from commentary for her House of Glory match.AEW's Role: Speculation on AEW's involvement and how it reflects on the company's public perception.Power Dynamics: The risk of using influence to silence opposing voices and how it sets a dangerous precedent.Missed Storytelling Opportunity: How the real-life tension could have been used to create an engaging wrestling storyline.Professionalism Matters: Why constructive dialogue and conflict resolution are essential for the industry.Bigger Industry Impact: How this could encourage others to misuse power in the future.Solutions: Suggestions on how companies can establish better protocols for handling disputes.Key Takeaways:Wrestling thrives on controversy, but mishandling conflict damages credibility.Promotions should prioritize professionalism and open communication.Fans should critically analyze situations rather than defaulting to outrage.AEW and House of Glory should lead by example to avoid setting harmful precedents.Engagement Question:Do you think companies should mediate conflicts like this differently? Welcome to the Squared Cirlce Podcast! I am your host Marie Shadows! The second night of the 2025 New Japan Cup delivered hard-hitting action, surprising moments, and plenty of discussions about the state of the tournament. Here, we break down the key matches, highlight standout performances, and explore areas of improvement for some of the competitors.Match Highlights & AnalysisBolton Oleg vs. Badluck FaleOleg, a recently graduated Young Lion, picked up a solid win over Fale. The match itself was a showcase of power, but the question remains: is Bolton Oleg truly the next big thing? While he has the size and strength, there's still work to be done in crafting a character that fans can connect with.Great O-Khan vs. El PhantasmoThis match showcased technical wrestling, with Great O-Khan controlling the pace. His stiff strikes and submission work made for a compelling bout, ultimately securing his victory with the Eliminator. This match further cemented Great O-Khan's role as a dominant force in NJPW.Ishii vs. Drilla MaloneyDrilla Maloney continues his rise in New Japan, securing a hard-fought victory over Ishii. While the match was intense, the length and repeated “fighting spirit” no-sells may have overstayed their welcome. Regardless, Drilla is proving to be a must-watch competitor with a growing presence.Main Event: Naito vs. Callum NewmanNaito faced Callum Newman in a match that highlighted both Newman's strengths and weaknesses. Newman, known as the “Prince of Pace,” brings high-speed offense, but the match revealed an over-reliance on his mentor Will Ospreay's style.Naito methodically targeted Newman's previously injured knee, controlling the match's flow. Newman's biggest weakness was his inability to sell the injury effectively. At times, he abandoned selling his knee altogether, immediately bouncing up for high-impact moves, which hurt the story being told in the ring.Tape Study Takeaways on Callum NewmanNewman has the tools, but refinement is needed. Here are a few key pointers:Character Development: Who is Callum Newman beyond “Prince of Pace”? He needs a deeper identity beyond his nickname.Match Psychology: Selling is crucial. If an opponent works the knee, there should be consistency in his movements and offense.Crowd Engagement: Newman should work on interacting with the audience more, making his presence felt.Ditch the Ospreay Mannerisms: While influenced by Ospreay, he needs to develop his own unique arsenal.Looking AheadWith Bolton Oleg, Great O-Khan, Drilla Maloney, and Naito advancing, the tournament is shaping up to be an intriguing one. Can Newman evolve? Will Drilla's momentum continue? These are key questions to follow in the coming rounds.Links:campsite.bio/marieshadowshttps://marieshadows-shop.fourthwall.comhttps://youtube.com/squaredcirclepodcasthttps://marieshadows.substack.com

Welcome to the Squared Circle Podcast! We are currently in year 6, season 6! I am your host Marie Shadows! Today, on the Squared Circle Podcast we are debunking a Dave Meltzer's tweet about his claim that Chris Charlton (NJPW Commentator and NJPW office worker) is on an indefinite hiatus from NJPW commentary. We are debunking this not for clout but for educational and informative purposes. Thanks for listening and sharing! More context over at my Substack wrestling newsletter: https://marieshadows.substack.com - free to sign up. In this episode, we dive deep into the controversy surrounding Dave Meltzer's tweet about Chris Charlton's alleged hiatus from NJPW commentary. Here's what we cover: Meltzer's Claim: Breaking down the tweet that sparked it all — why Chris Charlton is allegedly on hiatus due to anti-AEW comments during the Dynasty Show. NJPW's Transparency: Examples of how NJPW communicates major updates, proving why this claim lacks credibility. Parallels with Wrestling Drama: Comparing this situation to the CM Punk/Elite fallout and the absence of concrete evidence in both cases. Chris Charlton's NJPW Role: Explaining Charlton's multifaceted responsibilities and why his absence from New Year Dash!! is entirely logical. Marie Shadows dives into the heated final promo exchange between Gabe Kidd and Kenny Omega leading up to their clash at Wrestle Dynasty on January 5th. Here's what we unpack: Gabe Kidd: A Self-Made Madman Gabe Kidd has had a breakout year in 2024, carving his path in NJPW and proving his worth. At the press conference, he demanded respect, calling out Omega for AEW's perceived undermining of NJPW and its talent. Kidd's intense energy and raw passion captured what many NJPW loyalists feel about their promotion. Kenny Omega: The Disrespectful Mentor Omega dismissed Kidd's pandemic struggles, comparing them to his own NJPW tenure a decade ago. His patronizing tone framed him as a disappointed “father” figure, offering Kidd a supposed "opportunity" while taking credit for NJPW's growth. Omega's claim that NJPW's success is built on his name neglects the promotion's long-standing legacy and history with international stars. A Familiar Pattern: Kenny Omega vs. Will Ospreay This confrontation echoed Omega's feud with Will Ospreay, with a strikingly similar narrative. Both Kidd and Ospreay have spoken openly about their mental health struggles during the pandemic, only to be met with Omega's dismissive and diminishing responses. While Omega's “heel” persona may justify some of his behavior, these comments feel unnecessarily out of pocket, given the real-life hardships endured. Does This Match Even Make Sense? Despite the hype, the match between Omega and Kidd feels perplexing, with no clear storyline or *true* stakes driving the confrontation. The press conference seemed to manufacture drama rather than build on organic tension, leaving fans questioning the purpose behind this pairing. NJPW vs. AEW Culture Clash The conversation also highlighted the tension between NJPW's tradition and AEW's modern influence, raising questions about Wrestle Dynasty's true identity. Is this event a genuine NJPW production or more of a Tony Khan-backed AEW showcase? Why This Feud Feels Hollow The Omega vs. Kidd showdown lacks the depth and stakes needed to make it compelling, despite the heavy-handed press conference drama. Don't miss this must-listen breakdown of the dynamics and questions surrounding Wrestle Dynasty!
Welcome to the Squared Circle Podcast! I am your host Marie Shadows! In this episode, I break down Wrestle Dynasty, a rushed, disjointed PPV thrown together after the last NJPW Strong event. Tony Khan's booking pattern lacks cohesion, with no storylines or follow-through, even though he claims to love NJPW. I discuss the puzzling matchups like Ricochet vs. Zack Sabre Jr. for the IWGP Championship, despite them not having faced each other in eight years. The Young Bucks' inclusion raises concerns about unnecessary title opportunities. I also touch on the cultural impact of this multi-promotion spectacle, especially in Japan, where fans face financial strain from the packed schedule. Tony Khan fails to understand the business and spending habits of Japanese fans, forcing them to choose between attending Wrestle Kingdom, Wrestle Dynasty, or New Year's Dash, making this a disappointing show overall.
Welcome to the Squared Circle Podcast! I am your host Marie Shadows! In this episode, I break down all the matches for Wrestle Kingdom 19, including the chaotic Ranbo, the high-stakes retirement and hair loss match between Tanahashi and Evil, and the Junior Tag Team Titles ladder match. I also delve into why Yota Tsuji vs. David Finlay for the Global Heavyweight Championship feels mistimed. Wrestle Kingdom is NJPW's WrestleMania, and while I want it to deliver, NJPW needs to solidify its identity apart from AEW.
Welcome to the Squared Circle Podcast! I am your host Marie Shadows! Welcome to Tape Study Chatter! We are breaking down the promo between Kenny Omega and Gabe Kidd for their upcoming Wrestle Dynasty match! Introduction: Breaking down the mixed reactions to the build-up of the Kenny Omega vs Gabe Kidd match at Wrestle Dynasty. Omega's Heel Turn: Sudden shift from babyface to "Anime Villain" feels forced and unearned. Omega's promo is overly dramatic, but lacks logical buildup, making it awkward. Kidd's Promo: Kidd delivers an authentic, raw promo with clear, believable motivations. His aggression and intensity match his in-ring style, making him come across as genuine. Key Moments in the Promos: Omega's claim that Kidd destroyed Bullet Club feels hollow, as Omega hasn't been part of the faction since 2018. Omega's sense of entitlement over Bullet Club seems forced, making him look like a desperate heel. Kidd's promo stands out with his raw delivery, positioning him as the true protagonist in this feud. Storytelling Breakdown: Omega's heel turn feels jarring, while Kidd's motivations are grounded and clear, giving him an edge. Conclusion – Why the Match Doesn't Work: Omega's motivations are unclear, and his heel turn lacks depth. His health issues and rushed character shift weaken his heel persona. Kidd is miscast as a babyface, distorting the feud's dynamic. The lack of narrative momentum results in a shallow build-up, leading to a match that struggles to make an impact.
Welcome to the Squared Circle Podcast! I am your host Marie Shadows! When "jokes" fall flat, and truths are blocked - a twitter story In this episode, Marie Shadows dives into the intricacies of professional wrestling and the ongoing issues within major companies like New Japan Pro Wrestling and AEW. While defending New Japan's unique position in the wrestling ecosystem, Marie explores how different cultures have shaped pro wrestling across the world. The discussion also touches on the importance of constructive criticism and honest debate in wrestling fandom. Marie stresses the need for professionalism online and highlights a key Twitter moment involving WWE's Netflix move, urging the wrestling community to keep it classy.Marie Shadows defends New Japan Pro Wrestling while exploring cultural influences on the wrestling world. She discusses the importance of constructive criticism, professional conduct on social media, and calls for honest wrestling debates in this latest podcast episode. Bullet Points Summary Marie Shadows defends New Japan Pro Wrestling despite its flaws. Discusses how different cultures (Japan, America, Mexico) created unique wrestling styles. Stresses the importance of constructive criticism in wrestling fandom. Emphasizes the need for professionalism when engaging online. Recaps a controversial Twitter moment involving WWE's Netflix move. Calls for keeping debates about wrestling authentic and honest. Extra context pulled from my YouTube Community Tab & my own Twitter: Telling the truth gets you blocked. What are these plenty of "incentives" to actively support NJPW? I've supported & still no incentives. I've actively told my fans to sign up for NJPW World - no incentives. Why do fans never *fully* explain themselves? They say things & block. NJPW stars - who haven't yet signed to AEW - get secondhand treatment & become jobbers to AEW stars. Ishii is a prime example of this treatment despite TK saying: I LOVE ISHII! ISHII IS GREAT! No one cared about Ishii. No reaction. No understanding of his character or move set. The flip side: DDT Pro/AEW wrestler, Konosuke got the STAR treatment during the G1 this year by defeating ESTABLISHED NJPW wrestlers. Yeah, he lost later but that does damage to main roster of NJPW by changing fans PERCEPTION of those wrestlers. https://youtu.be/_Uq9WqpM60Q You don't need to watch a full episode of AEW to understand the issues - very SOLVABLE issues - that are playing out in REAL TIME. Summary In this episode of the podcast, Marie Shadows discusses several key issues affecting AEW and the wrestling community. She critiques Tony Khan's approach to building new stars in AEW, arguing that the company relies too heavily on established talent and former WWE wrestlers rather than nurturing fresh, homegrown talent. Shadows highlights the disconnect between AEW's claim of focusing on the future of wrestling and its reality—filled with pre-packaged stars with minimal investment in new, developing talent. She also criticizes the lack of genuine promotional effort from AEW wrestlers, citing the missed opportunity at the All In Texas press conference. The episode also explores the rebranding of the acronym IWC, emphasizing how the phrase “I Will Complain” reflects a larger issue within the wrestling community—how negativity is often rewarded on social media over authentic, constructive discourse. Marie shares practical tips for curating your Twitter timeline to filter out negativity and focus on content that truly reflects what fans want to see. Marie wraps up the episode with a reflection on the unrealistic expectation for fans to “Enjoy All Wrestling,” stressing that every community and fandom has the right to critique and demand more from their favorite promotions and wrestlers. She also hints at a future project, Tape Study, where she plans to help wrestlers improve by analyzing matches and promos. Tony Khan's Press Conference for AEW All In Texas: Discussion of Tony Khan's excitement for the future of pro wrestling, juxtaposed with concerns about AEW's reliance on established stars and former WWE talent. Welcome to the Squared Circle Podcast with your host, Marie Shadows. This episode is named: Jon Moxley - AEW Hard Reset! + Mox Interviews commentary - Full Gear 2024 Marie Shadows took a break due to a family member needing surgery. The family member is now recovering, and she has been aiding in their recovery. But now she's back, bringing the controversial talking points for AEW and Jon Moxley. This entire podcast episode is dedicated to Jon Moxley, Jon Moxley's crew Death Riders, and his buildup with Orange Cassidy. Marie also discusses Twitter/X drama regarding Claudio tossing Orange Cassidy around like a rag doll. Marie Shadows provides social commentary on recent interviews featuring Jon Moxley. These include: A snippet from the NY Sports Post (nicknamed "Sunglass Hut").The full TV Insider interview, which featured varied questions, with Moxley appearing undecided about whether he was in character or not. Marie also talks about the importance of social media and how to effectively block, mute, and move forward. She explains that while social media is (unfortunately) the future, people need to understand and use it properly. Instead of blaming the toxicity they see on their timeline—which they haven't yet cleaned up—some fans unfairly label others as toxic or criticize those who genuinely want the AEW product to improve. Welcome to the Squared Circle Podcast by your host Marie Shadows. Today, 10.24.24, I livestreamed only on YouTube where I talked about my ideas and why I want to do a video/livestream called: The State of AEW Address. I gave choices: A panel of guests or individual interviews to answer questions and have a deep, honest, and open conversation about the state of AEW all because Tony Khan keeps going after twitter commentors while pretending to live in a glass house. I read my discord messages out to my viewers to explain the idea, the choices, and what my brand means and what kind of content I produce. Please support Marie Shadows via the links: Wrestling Newsletter YouTube Twitch All my links *** In this episode, Marie Shadows takes a stand against the shocking and controversial ending of AEW All Out 2024, highlighting actions that cross ethical boundaries and violate human rights within wrestling. Focusing on specific incidents—such as Bryan Danielson being suffocated with a bag by Jon Moxley and Hangman Adam Page's disturbing actions towards Swerve Strickland—Marie argues that these acts go beyond entertainment and pose real dangers to the wrestlers' safety and autonomy. She discusses the implications of such imagery on the perception of wrestling, the importance of respecting the humanity of wrestlers, and the potential consequences of ignoring these issues. Marie also addresses the difference between sponsorships and affiliate sponsorships in this context and reaffirms her commitment to speaking out, despite others being silenced. Segment 3: Exploring the theme of human rights violations in wrestling, focusing on the loss of autonomy and the line between entertainment and exploitation. Segment 4: Discussion on the role of sponsorships vs. affiliate sponsorships in the wrestling industry, and how such incidents can affect the business side of wrestling. Mone, who has talked in previous interviews about her divorce, took the opportunity to embarrass and insult the reporter, suggesting he was hitting on her, to which he clarified he had been married for nine years. Marie discusses how Mone's overreaction showed a lack of professionalism and awareness in handling media. • Tony Khan's Meltdown: Tony Khan had a public meltdown during a press conference when a reporter described a "championship title" as a "joke." Khan immediately cut off the reporter to vehemently defend the title's significance, correcting him as if he were a child. Marie points out the immaturity and the lack of adult behavior within AEW's management and roster. She argues that knowing the proper history and not the AEW history, the title is indeed a "joke." • Will Ospreay's Misunderstanding of AEW's Finances: Marie discusses Will Ospreay's lack of understanding regarding Tony Khan's "business strategy." She highlights that Tony Khan essentially breaks even while hosting AEW shows in the UK. No report ever says AEW was profitable during a UK event. PPV buys are one thing. Ticket sales are another. But the breakdown of how much is left over after everyone gets a cut on the money is still unclear and thus, AEW most likely breaks even without a profit. With the recent AEW All In event, there was a notable absence of celebration around the attendance numbers, hinting at a low turnout. The reality, Marie argues, is that the UK has (some) money to spend while the U.S. market is currently struggling financially. • Ricochet's Mistake of Alienating AEW Fans and AEW fans wanting only GOOD SHOWS!: In another example of poor decision-making, Ricochet, who recently moved from WWE to AEW, engaged in a spree of responses to trolls and negative comments just three days into his AEW tenure. Marie explains how such behavior only serves to alienate fans. She highlights the lack of understanding among AEW fans regarding how to sustain a business. An exciting show doesn't mean everyone gets paid, and the financials need to make sense. Key Takeaways: • The importance of professionalism when representing a brand. • AEW's management struggles to maintain a mature and constructive dialogue with the media. • The reality of AEW's financial situation in the UK versus the USA. • Wrestlers' need to understand their impact on fan relations and business sustainability.
Welcome to the Squared Circle Podcast. I am the host, Marie Shadows. Since questioning the booking of Konosuke, all kinds of fanboys came from left field to not have a conversation with me. Mostly they didn't and wanted to talk amongst themselves as if I — the OP — wasn't there. I had conversation with those I replied to so they can understand my perspective on the matter but for those that laughed at me because I stand firm in being a realist when talking about pro wrestling and told me that: wrestling isn't that deep. I know for a fact, that person wasn't looking for a productive conversation, so I simply said: “Then don't seek out and comment on wrestling threads if you believe that.” Before that a comment read: Takeshita winning is always the correct decisions if we're being honest.” I automatically knew that commentator didn't want to have a conversation. He wanted to just hear his comment. This is where I find out ‘fanboy' can be offensive. My response to that previous statement was: If you're a fanboy, yeah. If you're a realist no. Happy Tuesday! Welcome to a brand new podcast episode called: Cody Rhodes vs The Internet: How Fan Backlash Is Destroying Wrestling Interviews On this epsiode, your lovely host, Marie Shadows did the research by watching the Cody Rhodes interview with Chris Van Vilet and consulted her Young Bucks book to see what this “lie” is about that has fans calling Cody Rhodes out on. News flash! There is no lie. How can someone lie about their experience and truth at a company they've helped build, found, and wrestled for? In the interview with Chris, Cody Rhodes is completely right. He said that the IWC and [dirt sheet] writers will take what he'll say and spin it and everyone will argue about it. This is paraphrasing, but the jist of what happened. I tweeted, and it went viral. Thanks twitter! I defended in general that all wrestlers should be able to speak their truth on a podcast interview. If you don't agree with the guest, then that's ok too. There are exceptions to the rule, of course. Like if a guest is truly lying and you can prove it with evidence, then yes, call it out. But if Cody Rhodes is recounting his tale and the experiences, he has with AEW and you weren't a fly on the wall to know what actually, then don't speak on that kind of business. In my tweet, I call out that Tony Khan and enablers have created an environment of hate, backlash, and negativity without consequences, and it must be stopped. In the episode, I give specific examples on how Tony Khan and enablers have created such an environment, and this teaches fans that it is ok to say hurtful, harmful, and even bully wrestlers and other fans who do not agree with them at all.
