Marty Klein returns for a bonus episode where we dive into his journey since his original appearance on The Life Shift Podcast. The main takeaway from our chat is how sharing his story about losing his mom at a young age has impacted him and helped him reflect on the deeper shifts it created in his life. We discuss the nuances of dealing with grief, the importance of talking about it openly, and how sharing experiences can lead to unexpected connections with others. Marty shares how he initially felt unsure about sharing his story but found that it sparked important conversations with friends and family. We also touch on how revisiting these stories can help us understand not just the shifts themselves, but the ongoing effects they have on our lives. The Life Shift RewindI'm excited to share bonus episodes from Patreon, where I revisited past guests to discuss what has changed and the value of sharing their stories. Since I currently only have the lower tiers available, I wanted to make these conversations accessible to the public feed. Celebrating Five Years of the 'You Are Not Broken' Podcast Happy New Year! This week, as we step into 2024, I'm reflecting on the incredible journey of the podcast and the amazing guests who've joined me along the way. Five years ago, on January 1, 2020, I launched the very first episode of You Are Not Broken. At the time, Instagram wasn't even part of the equation for me and now I just hit 200K, I hadn't published a book, hadn't done a TEDX talk and the term "menopause expert" wasn't something that I was. Looking back, I can confidently say: that first episode was pretty good! Thank you to all of the sponsors, prescribers, everyone who supports ISSWSH and treats women for sexual health issues. I just did a course about sexual health and prescribing testosterone with Dr. Heather Hirsch's academy. In honor of this milestone, let's revisit some of the highlights and wisdom shared by the brilliant minds who've graced the podcast. 1.My very first episode - short, sweet and mission driven, this is how it all started. 2. Dr. Mary Claire Haver – April 2023 episode 208 Long before “the new menopause” and the buzz around medications like Ozempic, Dr. Haver was here dropping timeless advice. 3. Dr. Sari Van Anders and the Science of Desire – march 2022 – Epiosde 147 Dr. Van Anders insights reshaped how we think about desire. Her research challenged the heteronormative theory of low desire in women partnered with men, emphasizing that desire is far more complex than we often assume. She explained how sexual thoughts and behaviors can influence our hormones, showing that thinking sexy thoughts can actually increase testosterone levels. This idea—that our minds and bodies are deeply connected—has inspired so many listeners to explore what turns them on and why. 4. Dr. Avrum Bluming and the Hormone Window – Epiosde 222 July 2023 Dr. Bluming joined me to discuss the "10-year window" and the incredible "window of opportunity" when it comes to hormone therapy. We now know that the main risk associated with oral estrogen is clotting in veins, which is why transdermal (TD) estrogen is the preferred option. He reminded us of the critical role hormones play in bone health, as hip fractures kill as many people each year as breast cancer. 5. The Lancet Rebuttal: Are We Overtreating Menopause? – April 2024, #259 This powerful panel discussion featured Dr. Lauren Streicher, Dr. Aoife O'Sullivan, Dr. Heather Quaile, Dr. Heidi Flagg, and Dr. Mary Claire Haver. Together, we explored whether menopause is being overtreated in 2024. Spoiler: the answer is no. 6. Dr. Marty Klein and the Complexities of Fantasy episode 169 – July 2022 Dr. Klein's book, His Porn, Her Pain, sparked a fascinating conversation about the nature of fantasy. His insights challenged us to think deeply about what fantasy means for us as individuals and how it shapes our relationships. As we celebrate five years, I want to thank everyone who listens, shares, and prescribes for women. Your support fuels this mission to empower and educate. Here's to another year of breaking myths, sharing stories, and embracing the science of living our best lives. Happy New Year, Dr. Kelly Casperson Thanks to our sponsor Midi Women's Health. In this conversation, Dr. Marty Klein joins me and discusses the importance of reframing the conversation around sex and challenging our ideas about sexuality. We emphasize that sex is not just a behavior, but an idea, and that our ideas about sex shape our experiences. He highlights the need for individuals to have a sense of agency and the ability to shape their own sexual experiences. We also address common conceptions people have about sex, such as the belief that it should be a continuous, seamless connection, and the exceptionalism around sexuality. He encourages a more realistic and accepting view of sexuality, where not every sexual encounter needs to be transcendent or perfect. We also talk about how foreplay is about getting mentally and emotionally tuned into the sexual experience. It's important to leave behind the cares of the day and focus on the connection with your partner. Plus, as we age, our bodies change, and it's important to adapt and explore new ways of pleasure.  Learn more about Dr Klein here - https://www.martyklein.com/ Takeaways Sex is not just a behavior, but an idea that shapes our experiences. It is important to challenge and examine our ideas about sexuality. Having a sense of agency and the ability to shape our own sexual experiences is crucial. Not every sexual encounter needs to be perfect or transcendent; a more realistic and accepting view of sexuality is needed. Foreplay is about mentally and emotionally preparing for sex. Planning and scheduling sex can be beneficial for busy adults. As we age, our bodies change, and it's important to adapt and explore new ways of pleasure. Knowing what you want in sex is just as important as knowing what you don't want. Sexuality is a local experience, not an express one. Communication, experimentation, and understanding your own desires are key in a satisfying sexual experience. Enjoy the show! Sponsors ... What is the number one fantasy by women? Should you actually live our your sexual fantasies? “Sexual fantasies do not have meaning” – Dr. Marty Klein Porn addiction – define? Talk about the power struggles couples get in and think it is about porn “The ultimate issue in many couples in conflict about pornography is the decline or disappearance of their once enjoyable sex life. While it is common to say that the porn user is selfish and rejecting of their partners, a lot of porn use is actually a desperate attempt to stay in a sexually unfulfilling couple.” What to do if no longer attracted to your spouse? How is this not porn's fault if it makes you get off to perfect bodies? “Desire in middle age does not feel like desire at 23 years old” – Dr. Marty Klein What he wishes women knew about their male partner's porn. What I found most interesting in our chat is how Marty's upbringing likely somewhat dictated his approach to loss and grief. First developed for the military during WW II – it uses sound to detect ships and other lost objects in the ocean depths. While searching for the elusive monster Nessie in Scotland's Loch Ness, he went on to find the USS Thresher – the Wellington bomber that plunged into the loch on a training mission. Besides its military applications, side scan sonar was also deployed after the Titanic tragedy to locate icebergs. We hear how Marty has worked with many of the leading ocean explorers, including MIT engineer, Doc Edgerton and ocean explorer Bob Ballard, who went on to discover the Titanic. #titanic #lochnessmonster #maritimearchaeology #sidescansonar #martyklein #bobballard #mit #WWII

Dr. Klein  presented at the Rocky Mountain Sex & Intimacy Summit in Salt Lake City, September 22-23, 2017. They discuss some of the societal and relational challenges that have taken place since the advent of broadband internet, and how we are often having the wrong conversations. Instead of focusing on important discussions in regards to our sexuality, our fears, our intimacy needs/wants, etc., we keep the focus on “porn panic” rhetoric, which is subject to many myths and misinformation. This has significant implications not only for couples and individuals, but for how we parent and educate our teens. The importance of being willing to challenge our biases around meanings and assumptions we make about pornography and be open to expert research & facts, is paramount in being able to move into healthier sexual narratives and relationships. In Let's Eat, Peggy gives us tips for cooking quinoa and a recipe to try. It is recommended that you listen to the podcast for a complete explanation, then read the below text for more information. Instructions for cooking quinoain the microwave. Rinse the quinoa in a fine sieve (very important, since raw quinoa has the residue of a natural, bitter substance called saponins). For each cup of grain add 1-1/2 cup waterand microwave on high for 12 minutes. Outcome will vary with microwave wattage. Addone to three more minutes if needed. Quinoa and Corn Pealaf (Note: You can microwave the quinoa for this recipe as described above, or cook it using the below steps). Reprinted from The Five Ingredient Vegetarian Gourmetby Nava Atlas. 4 TO 6 SERVINGS 1 cup quinoa, rinsed in a fine sieve 1/2 tablespoons light olive oil 1 large onion, quartered and thinly sliced 2 cups cooked fresh corn kernels (from 3 medium ears) or one 8-ounce package thawed frozen corn kernels 1 teaspoon cumin Salt and freshly ground pepper to taste Two revered ancient grains in one simple, tasty dish. 1 Bring 2 cups water to a simmer in a medium saucepan. Stir in the quinoa, cover, and simmer gently until the water is absorbed, about 15 minutes. 2 Meanwhile, heat the oil in a wide skillet. Add the onion and saute over medium heat until golden. Stir in the corn kernels and continue to saute until the onion begins to brown lightly. - Stir the cooked quinoa into the corn mixture along with the cumin, and season with salt and pepper. If a little more moisture is needed, stir in a small amount of water, and serve. Quinoais a rediscovered food of ancient South American origin. Once the staple nourishment of the Inca culture, it’s technically not a grain but the seed of an herb-like plant. Now grown in the American Rockies (replicating the harsh terrain of the Andes, where it once thrived), quinoa is still considered a specialty grain, thus, it is somewhat expensive. Nutritionally, though, you get a lot for your money—quinoa is considered a ”super food” for its superb nutritional profile, which includes high-quality protein. Quinoa cooks to a fluffy texture in about 15 minutes and has a mild yet distinct flavor. Today’s guest is Marty Klein. Born in Brooklyn, NY in 1948, Marty grew up with his heart set on being a weatherman. He eventually realized that dream during his time in the U.S. Air Force but found it shattered when he lost his eyesight in 1974. What started as the biggest challenge of his life turned out to be a blessing in disguise. Marty eventually landed in Woodstock, NY, where he found his identity as a man, a loving partner, a caring stepfather, and a good friend while working for Family of Woodstock, a crisis intervention center. Having come to a place of grounding and clarity about his journey, he wrote his first book, a memoir, Blindsighted, One Man’s Journey from Sight to Insight. He went on to pen two more books, Emotional Cleansing, The Spiritual Journey Toward a Clear Heart, and The Enlightened Gambler, The Heart and Spirit of the Risk Taker in All of Us, published in 2013. Being blind has never slowed him down as he also co-founded Namaste Yoga Center, realizing that everything happens on a mat, and co-produced a 5CD instructional set called “Beginning Yoga for the Blind and Visually impaired”. Marty participated in a spiritual workshop with Ram Dass, and the sound of the harmonium that Krishna Das played that night so touched his heart that he has been chanting and leading Kirtan with his harmonium ever since. Marty can be found at www.blindyoga.net.  Please be sure to fill out our Audience Demographic Survey for LibSyn. Thanks!
