Today's Headlines: This weekend saw two devastating mass shootings just hours apart. At Brown University in Rhode Island, a 24-year-old gunman killed two students and wounded nine others inside an academic building, prompting a five-hour campus lockdown before he was arrested at a hotel south of Providence. Several of the victims had previously survived other school shootings. In Australia, a father and son opened fire on a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach, killing 15 people and injuring 40. One victim, a Holocaust survivor, died while shielding his wife. Authorities called it a terrorist attack and recovered explosives nearby. In other news, two U.S. troops and a civilian interpreter were killed in Syria after an attacker—who had recently joined local security forces—opened fire. The incident is being treated as a major security failure, and Trump vowed retaliation against ISIS. Meanwhile, Chile elected its most right-wing president in decades, José Antonio Kast, while Ukraine peace talks continue. President Zelensky signaled he may forgo NATO membership in exchange for U.S. security guarantees, even as the U.S. reportedly plans to scale back European defense commitments and Republicans float leaving NATO altogether. Back in the US, House Democrats released dozens of photos from Jeffrey Epstein's estate showing him with powerful figures across politics and business, with tens of thousands more images still under review. The New York Times also reported that Andrew Tate cultivated ties to Trump-world figures to help escape prosecution abroad—after which new assault allegations quickly followed. And finally, Dr. Oz has been emailing federal health workers unsolicited advice on resisting office snacks, reminding everyone that in 2025, nothing—not even cookies—is safe from wellness content. 3 Things You Need to Know About Brown University's SHOCKING Incident The story of the Brown University shooting is far from over. The legal case against Benjamin Erickson will move through the justice system. But the story of the campus itself is one of a community that's been changed forever. The physical scars on the Barus and Holley building will be repaired, but the psychological wounds will take much longer to heal. This event is a painful addition to a statistic that continues to grow. In recent years, the United States has consistently seen hundreds of mass shootings annually. What happened at Brown is not an isolated incident, but a reflection of a larger national crisis. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. On Sunday, two gunmen opened fireon a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach in Sydney, Australia, killing 15 people and injuring dozens of others in the country's deadliest mass shooting since 1996. According to authorities, the shooters were a father and son, and the father was shot and killed by the police while the son sustained “critical injuries.” Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese called the shooting “an act of evil, antisemitism, terrorism”; investigators have said they are still working to understand the shooters' motives. Sydney's terror attack is raising questions about intelligence shortcomings and where security systems could be beefed up. A 50-year-old man and his 24-year-old son allegedly shot dozens of people celebrating the Jewish holiday Hanukkah at Bondi on Sunday evening. The younger man had been investigated by the country's security agency before and wasn't considered a threat. A senior lecturer of terrorism and radicalisation told Heather du Plessis-Allan that intelligence services are probably watching dozens of people, forcing them to make decisions as to who is likely to be the most relevant threat at that time. Australian National University's Dr Michael Zekulin says the alleged shooter didn't meet the criteria in this case, which is something that's been seen time and time again, in other countries as well. Security has been boosted around Jewish places of worship and gatherings following last night's deadly attack at Bondi Beach. Two gunmen opened fire on a crowd of about a thousand people celebrating the first day of Hanukkah, killing 15 and injuring 40. Holocaust Centre of New Zealand Chair Deborah Hart says New Zealand's Jewish community is 'reeling' following the attack, and tributes are flooding in. "We hold those directly affected in our hearts, but we know that we have to be resilient and we have to go on. And we've only had the first night of Hanukkah, and Hanukkah is the festival that has carried us through centuries of persecution." LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Poet and essayist Carol Ann Davis (Fairfield University) joins Evan Rosa for a searching conversation on violence, childhood, and the moral discipline of attention in the aftermath of Sandy Hook. Reflecting on trauma, parenting, childhood, poetry, and faith, Davis resists tidy narratives and invites listeners to dwell with grief, healing, beauty, and pain without resolution.“I don't believe life feels like beginnings, middles, and ends.”In this episode, Davis reflects on how lived trauma narrows attention, reshapes language, and unsettles conventional storytelling. Together they discuss poetry as dwelling rather than explanation, childhood and formation amid violence, image versus narrative, moral imagination, and the challenge of staying present to suffering.Episode Highlights“Nothing has happened at Hawley School.
