Have you ever thought about your communication fingerprints as a leader? Or the gap between what you say and what your teams hear? Well, we thought it would be interesting to talk with Oscar Trimboli, a renowned thought leader and expert on the transformative power of listening in effective leadership.   Drawing from his extensive background, including his tenure as marketing director for Microsoft Australia, Oscar has dedicated himself to decoding the behaviors of exceptional listeners. Oscar has authored much on this topic including his most recent book, How to Listen: Discover the Hidden Key to Better Communication.   Oscar believes that true leadership lies in the ability to listen beyond surface-level dialogue, urging leaders to address systemic issues through thematic listening and the exploration of diverse perspectives. By providing tools such as the Listening Quiz, Oscar empowers leaders to evaluate and enhance their listening skills, underscoring that attentive listening can significantly elevate organizational success and leadership effectiveness.   Through our conversations, we touched on points such as:   - Active listening and deep listening are crucial skills for leaders, focusing on understanding what isn't said in conversations.   - Leaders can anticipate and navigate complex team challenges by actively listening and sensing emotions.   - Transformational leadership through listening involves uncovering systemic issues and sensing emotions beyond spoken words.   - The speed difference between speaking and listening can lead to distractions, emphasizing the importance of how things are said.   - Identifying the ‘Four Villains of Listening', including dramatic, interrupter, lost, and shrewd barriers, hinder effective communications.   - Encouraging self-connection with listening abilities through an assessment can lead to improved communication and relationships.   About the guest:   Oscar Trimboli is a best-selling author, host of the Apple award-winning podcast Deep Listening, and a sought-after keynote speaker. Along with the Deep Listening Ambassador Community, he is on a quest to create 100 million deep listeners in the workplace. Through his work, Oscar has experienced first-hand the transformational impact leaders can have when they listen beyond words. He believes that when leadership teams focus their attention and listening, they will build organizations that create powerful legacies for the people they serve – today and, more importantly, for future generations.   Connect with Oscar: Take the Listening Quiz: www.listeningquiz.com Website: https://www.oscartrimboli.com/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/oscartrimboli/   Connect with Allison: Feedspot has named Disruptive CEO Nation as one of the Top 25 CEO Podcasts on the web and it is ranked the number 10 CEO podcast to listen to in 2024! https://podcasts.feedspot.com/ceo_podcasts/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/allisonsummerschicago/ Website: https://www.disruptiveceonation.com/ Twitter: @DisruptiveCEO    #CEO #brand #startup #startupstory #founder #business #businesspodcast #podcast  Learn more about your ad choices. This week we get to catch up with Katie Ford of Microsoft Australia, who tells us about the projects that have been happening in AI in Education around Australia, and shares some of the lessons learnt from the projects as well as what she is learning through her own research focus. The examples Katie discusses are: Tasmania Department of Education: Collaborated with Microsoft to enhance their data estate and prepare for AI applications aimed at identifying vulnerable children during COVID, helping to reveal overlooked demographics and improve interventions. University of New South Wales (UNSW): Engaged in multiple initiatives including embedding AI intelligence into complex institutional systems and processes, and developing the Academic Success Monitor to predict and intervene early with students disengaging from education. This proactive outreach is personalised and has shown positive impacts on student success rates. South Australia Department of Education: Pioneered the use of generative AI in classrooms, equipping educators with AI tools to enhance teaching and learning, making it one of the first in the world to adopt such technology at this scale. New South Wales Department of Education: Implemented AI thoughtfully to support educators, focusing on significant time savings and improved experiences in the classroom, with a commitment to reducing teacher workloads by five hours weekly. NSWEduChat Brisbane Catholic Education: Conducted a successful pilot with Microsoft Copilot, saving educators an average of 9.3 hours per week, which led to a wider rollout across the board to boost productivity and support staff well-being.  Brisbane Catholic Education to deploy Microsoft 365 Copilot to 12,500 educators and support staff, in largest rollout for K-12 globally - Microsoft Australia News Centre University of Sydney: Developed Cogniti to enable academics to control generative AI usage within their courses, facilitating the creation and monitoring of AI agents to enhance educational delivery and student monitoring. Torrens University: Used Azure OpenAI to overhaul their Learning Management System, addressing user experience feedback, enhancing accessibility, and saving both cost and labour significantly. Of course, we get diverted off course along the way, with a mention of platypus spotting, and Ray's visceral hatred of automated supermarket tills gets ha mention

In this episode of 'State of Mind', I am thrilled to welcome Microsoft's own Steven Worrall to the conversation. Steven is the Managing Director for Microsoft Australia and New Zealand and the Chair of the Corporate Mental Health Alliance Australia (CMHAA). Steven found himself in a difficult situation just over five years ago. Not only had he just been appointed to his current role at Microsoft, but his parents were rapidly ageing. As so many loving and dutiful children do, Steven took full responsibility for his mom and dad's growing healthcare needs as they faced Alzheimer's and cancer. However, Steven underestimated the toll that this commitment would take on his mental health and found himself without the tools he needed to practice self-care and stay connected during this challenging period of his life. Looking back now, Steven realises he did not have the vital communication skills he needed to be able to reach out and allow others to support him. This revelation about the power of sharing, openness and storytelling is one of the key reasons he became involved with Corporate Mental Health Alliance Australia and the work the CMHAA does to normalise daily conversations about mental health. In Episode 08, Steven and I discuss: - The events that triggered Steven to start opening up and sharing his mental health story with his community - How we can all ensure that mental health will stay on the agenda of every conversation, even as we emerge from the pandemic - The tools Steven now uses in his everyday life to practice self-care and tend to his mental health Follow the host Vera Siertsema on: Instagram https://www.instagram.com/verasiertsema/ Linkedin https://www.linkedin.com/in/verasiertsema/

If humans are the ones programming artificial intelligence, are we stuck with the human biases that inadvertently work their way into AI systems? Our guests today don't think so. AI is undoubtedly playing a beneficial role in society, helping us respond more effectively to medical emergencies, improving surgical procedures, and even making our buildings smarter. There are already methods in place ensuring that society can hold AI and its designers accountable. Established ethics committees have been joined by new legislation and increasing awareness among policy-makers. Accessible courses and casual data science meetups enable any of us to join the conversation and help shape emerging technologies, the data they use, and how they use it. As we work towards a more ethical society, we can ensure our AI is ethical, too. Dr Susan Carland is again joined by communications and media studies expert Professor Mark Andrejevic, human-computer interaction scholar Yolande Strengers, Monash University Interim Dean of Information Technology Ann Nicholson, and Microsoft Australia's former chief digital advisor, Rita Arrigo. This week we're joined by Lee Hickin, Microsoft Australia's National Technology Officer, who first of all tells us what he does and his background, and then talks about interesting artificial intelligence projects within public sector in Australia. He talks about the fish counting project in Darwin Harbour and the work being done in Kakadu National Park. What's clear is that Lee sees these successful projects as being a blend of technology merged with good professional judgement (something that makes sense in education too). We also talk about the responsible use of artificial intelligence, and what we're learning about good AI use - and why you can't just sit back and do nothing until the dust has settled. In fact, nearly half the time is spent discussing responsible AI, and frameworks for ensuring that we're using artificial intelligence well, in the service of users.
