Today, on Hook of a Book, I review Five Feet Apart, by Rachel Lippincott, with Mikki Daughtry and Tobias Iaconis! This is a captivating YA book about two teens battling cystic fibrosis that I devoured. It was truly phenomenal. In Brenna's absence, Joe recruits Nichole Goble for a return to Sick Lit with Justin Baldoni's directorial debut, Five Feet Apart (2019) and its novelization by Mikki Daughtry and Tobias Iaconis. This free flowing discussion tackles the depiction of CF in the film and the criticisms lobbied at both texts, which acknowledging that they did help to raise awareness of the disease. Plus: the sick bodies of stars Richardson and Sprouse, why we don't buy their love affair, the realities of divorce, and how the different endings between film and novelization change its meaning.Wanna connect with the show? Hey friends! If you've made it here, to the show notes, I hope that means you're in it for the long haul! This was by far our longest recording (I also think it was the funniest). It began at 2 hours before editing so just be grateful we didn't keep EVERYTHING in this episode. We just missed each other so much and had to catch up! Thanks for joining us, we love you all. Starting at 51 Minutes and goes until 1 Hour and 4 Minutes. Oof, so sorry. It just sort of happened. Brooke says “6 feet apart” as opposed to the correct name of the book/movie, which is “Five Feet Apart”. Sorry, she was probably assuming that it's supposed to be 6 feet apart since that was what everyone was supposed to do during the reign of Covid. Theres also a great song by Luke Combs called 6 feet apart that was written during Covid. 4:15 - Ray's Indoor Mountain Bike Park in Cleveland, Ohio13:32 - See our Instagram post! Hi podcast listeners, I'm Barbara Morgan and you're listening to Austin Film Festival's On Story. This week on On Story we're joined by screenwriting duo Mikki Daughtry and Tobias Iaconis discussing their journey writing films such as Five Feet Below, and the recent Netflix adaptation of the J.A. White fantasy-horror novel, Nightbooks. Mikki Daughtry is a screenwriter and young adult fiction author. She is best known for writing, along with writing partner Tobias Iaconis, the films The Curse of La Llorona, Five Feet Apart, and Netflix's Nightbooks. Tobias Iaconis is also a screenwriter best known for his work with Daughtry, as well as 2009's Behind Enemy Lines: Columbia. In 2012 he partnered with Daughtry for an adaptation of the Jack Kilborn action-horror novel Afraid. Moderator Harrison Glaser sat down with the pair to discuss their process at the Austin Film Festival. Welcome back to our usual content! This week, we will be discussing Five Feet Apart by Mikki Daughtry and Rachael Lippincott. While it became famous due to its amazing film adaptation, the book is absolutely wonderful and heartwrenching. The beautiful imagery and hopelessness of it are incredibly overwhelming. As you listen, you'll probably hear us gush over it all and wonder about the ambiguous ending. We hope you enjoy it!

Kaytee and Meredith are excited for a new year and some new bookish recommendations! As always, we start out with a “bookish moment of the week” from each host. Some fame-treatment and bonus reading time. Next, we discuss our current reads for the week. We’ve got five-star books and strong opinions and all the things you love in this segment this week, so it’s a fun one! We are skipping our Slow But Steady check-in this week, but be sure to chime in with your picks on Instagram or Facebook for this challenge! For our deep dive, we are throwing some serious side-eye at the Goodreads Best Books of 2019 lists and the ways these collections are put together. We have STRONG opinions about the winners for a number of these categories, but it’s not all negative. We’ll also share our picks for “best lists that actually reflect good 2019 reading” with you. Finally, this week, we are Pressing Books into Your Hands: we’re trying something a little different with a “guest press” this week, and including a category of book that has never shown up on the press list before.
