This is a important episode. Khushboo Chabria and I have a discussion on the inclusion of Neurodivergents in society, especially in the workplace and education. That neurodiversity, like ADHD and Autism is not a mental disorder. Each person is important and desires accommodations for the type of brain that were born with.Khushboo Chabria is a dynamic neurodiversity specialist, career coach, and mental health advocate who's reshaping how organizations embrace nuerodistinct talent. She is coauthor of the book "Neurodiversity for Dummies" and wrote the entire chapter on ADHD.Through her work with Neurodiversity Pathways at Goodwill of Silicon Valley, Khushboo isn't just opening doors; she's transforming entire workplace cultures, building bridges between neurodivergent talent and meaningful careers. Drawing from her background as a therapist, her leadership expertise, and her own journey with ADHD, Khushboo brings an authentic, multi-faceted perspective to neurodiversity advocacy.Khushboo Site'sFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/khushnessX(Twitter): https://x.com/khushnessYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@khushness1Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/khushnessLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/khushboochabria/OTR sites:Podcast Website: https://bobadleman.wixsite.com/otrmentalhealthMail: OvertheRainbowbob@gmail.comFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/otrachievingmentalhealhfrInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/over_the_rainbow_achieving Twitter: https://twitter.com/overtherain1bownYouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UChEYTddPDUaiZbFliit1r5QThis podcast uses the following third-party services for analysis: Podder - https://www.podderapp.com/privacy-policyPodtrac - https://analytics.podtrac.com/privacy-policy-gdrp
If you clicked on this video, you most probably belong to the 20% of our population who is highly sensitive or has a neurodivergent condition like autism, ADHD or similar. How's everyone feeling out there? Not gonna lie, 2024 has started off as a very stressful year for us. We have our tried-and-true coping mechanisms and skills but let's face it, sometimes you just need a little something extra to get you through the storm; so we did a little internet search to see if there were any suggestions that maybe we hadn't thought of before. The conclusion we came to was: No, not really. Pretty much every website we came across gave the exact same basic advice we've all heard again and again and again, with barely even any variance in how it was packaged. And we thought, alright, if they're all saying the same things then surely there must be some merit to these suggestions, but do they work as well for as for neurodivergents as they seemingly do for neurotypicals? Join us as we put these suggestions to the test and discuss our views on their efficacy and shortcomings as two neurodivergent women in search of some heavy duty stress busters. Thank you for listening, your support means the world to us! Don't forget to rate, review, and subscribe to the podcast. Aniesa explores the reasons behind camouflaging, which has three categories: compensation, masking and assimilation. Aniesa talks about what these can look like, why so many neurodivergent people feel the need to camouflage and talks about how we can demystify and educate everyone on camouflaging. KEY TAKEAWAYS Masking is essentially changing your personality and natural way of being to fit in, to be perceived as neurotypical. Camouflaging in the natural world is an evolutionary trait that has developed to help creatures protect themselves which is why it lends itself so well as a descriptor of neurodivergent masking. Neurodivergents are trying to camouflage themselves alongside neurotypicals, to go undetected, seen as ‘normal' and appropriate. Camouflaging can be a way to avoid feeling the shame often attached to neurodiversity. There are consequences for camouflaging, from burnout to feeling anxious. Those who are neurodivergent learn that they get a negative reaction from being themselves. Many feel like if they don't mask they will be excluded and isolated. Assimilation is masking on a higher level, you create untrue versions of yourself, usually multiple ones depending on who you are with. BEST MOMENTS "We're really talking about changing our natural personalities so that we can fit” “I like the idea of camouflaging as a word as it's a really strong tactic” “The consequences of camouflaging are huge, they are so detrimental” “When you're compensating you're trying to keep up with others socially but when your masking you're hiding key aspects of yourself, just so you can fit in” “We all mask every single day” CONTACT METHODwww.instagram.com/aniesabblore/ www.instagram.com/sensationalkidstherapyuk/ www.facebook.com/sensationalkidslondon ABOUT THE HOST Aniesa completed her degree in Occupational Therapy at the University of Stellenbosch, in South Africa. She has since been focusing on pediatrics and sensory processing and integration. She has worked across a range of pediatric fields and has extensive experience in autism, specific learning difficulties, as well as anxiety and emotional regulation. Aniesa has one teenage son with autism, and one with sensory difficulties. She herself was diagnosed at a late age as having ADHD and has found that understanding her neurodivergence has led to a greater connection with children and their parents.

Hey all, and welcome back to another episode of The Neurodivergent Polyamorist! In this episode, Adam gets vulnerable and shares how, when he was diagnosed as Autistic in the '90s, his parents were told that he'd never be able to fall in love or form meaningful social relationships. We then dissect the crap out of that comment and argue instead that while those words may hold true from a neurotypical perspective, they neglect to take into account all the myriad wonderful ways that neurodivergent humans do relationships differently. Neurodivergents gonna neurodiverge, if you will, and that's both okay and beautiful! So if this sounds like your kind of episode, then sit back, put those headphones on, click play, and come with us on another neurodivergent journey through relationship land. We promise we'll be here for you every step of the way! ...and by the way - if you want to attend Adam's virtual talk on the importance of listening to neurodivergent stories at Burlington Literary Festival this year (its coming up this weekend!) be sure to click the link below and RSVP! Do you know what Stress does to a Neurodivergent's brain and body? Why are we so susceptible to #burnout? What can we do about it? This is an absolute GIFT from the Utopia campaign to all the high achieving NDs who are on a perpetual hamster wheel. Bernadette Dancy PhD (Health coach) and me discussed why stress shows up so much in a neurodivergent's life and the ensuing burnout, gender differences and what it looks like in terms of biology and behaviour, sharing examples of impact of the stress culture on our work lives, and why some struggle to "come out” and unmask at work, and some stress management strategies.

Imposter syndrome is something that impacts nearly every entrepreneur I know. But it's not just about feeling like you're not worthy to be called an expert in your field. Imposter syndrome shows up in so many different ways. This week on the podcast, imposter syndrome expert Patrick Casale and I are talking about imposter syndrome for neurodivergent folks, being in alignment with authenticity, how to let go of some of the negative messaging we hold onto, and creating movement to remain in creativity. Patrick is right there with us in the neurodivergent world, so of course when I called him an expert at the start of this episode, I could feel him cringe. This is something we all work on, forever, and it's about having the right tools in your toolbox to take back your power and get out of your own head. Whether you think you have imposter syndrome or not, I encourage you to listen in this week. Because we all have stories we tell ourselves and it's time to let them go. About Patrick Casale: Patrick Casale is a Licensed Clinical Mental Health and Addictions Therapist. He is the owner of All Things Private Practice. He is a Private Practice Coach and Strategist. Click on this link for the Program Script and Interview Transcripts for The Medical and Social Models of Autism. In the medical model, Autism is a neurological developmental disorder. In order to receive disability benefits, support services and social supports, Autistics are known by a medical pathology. A pathology that makes us second class citizens. In the social model we have the movement for Neurodiversity. Autistics and other individuals with conditions like ADHD are capturing our diversity as Neurodivergents to work towards a society of equality and equity. Dr. Scott Frasard will talk with me about why the medical and social models are important, and how the Neurodiversity movement is helping Autistics reach for our full potential in life. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/2daysautistic/support
Neurodivergents are the canary in the coal mine. Accommodating the neurodivergent's needs isn't about accommodating something special or weird. It's about making sure that our environments are human friendly. When we make sure that the neurodivergent person can thrive in an environment, we are also making sure that the neurotypical can as well. Everyone benefits from having a better and healthier environment. This is part 3 of a 3-part series on the common problems with interventions for ADHD and autism, and in my opinion it's one of the most powerful shifts we can make. When you have some type of neurological variation that causes you to experience the world in a different way, you automatically become an easy target for manipulation. Those who are easily overwhelmed, or who aren't sure how to read social cues and self-regulate have to work really hard to participate in day-to-day situations that feel normal and easy for other people. This could include sitting in a desk in a classroom. It could include having a simple conversation with a peers. It could include following directions, or sitting in a noisy public area. These are things many people take for granted. As a result, it may not make sense why others, who have different neurological wiring (ADHD, autism, etc.) cannot tolerate certain tasks or activities. Neurodivergents are commonly accused of being defiant, inappropriate, or difficult. To others it seems like they're not trying, or that they're just lazy and unmotivated. But the truth is that most of them KNOW they're different in some way. Yet when they're constantly misunderstood, they start to believe they really are broken in some way. Which is why interventions focused on "compliance", reward/punishment can not only invalidate their experience...it can also cause them to doubt their grip on reality. And in extreme cases, those approaches can be considered gaslighting. That's why we need to rethink the way we support neurodivergents, and I talk about how to make that shift in this episode. In this episode, I mentioned the Time Tracking Journal, which is a SIMPLE tool that will help you get through daily routines (like homework) with ease, without bribery, arguments, or constant hand-holding. The Time Tracking Journal walks you through a strategy you can do in just 10-15 minutes a day that will help kids get tasks done effectively and efficiently, and critical thinking skills and self-confidence at the same time. You can learn how to get instant access here: https://drkarendudekbrannan.com/timejournal
It's just brother all by himself again so what better time to talk about how to be a better neurotypical ally! Also he eventually decides maybe he should plug his own show! Haha
