Imagine how you would feel if you were a biracial child raised by your white mother and knew nothing about your Black father or his culture. People treated you differently from your white cousins and the white kids at school, but you didn't know why.  In this Everyday Conversation on Race  episode Desiree Chang, the Director of Education and Outreach for the Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission, joins me. Desiree shares her unique journey growing up in a mostly white community in Amish country, Pennsylvania, and later moving to a diverse high school in Delaware. She opens up about the challenges of finding her identity, feeling like an outlier in her family and community, and discovering her Black heritage in her mid-30s. Desiree talks about her career path, from working in probation and parole supervision, and drug and alcohol counseling, to her current role in civil rights advocacy. Hear her story. and why she believes it's essential to talk openly about race,  and how avoiding these conversations can hurt children and keep ignorance alive. She shares personal stories about the emotional toll of constantly switching between cultural norms, the trauma of navigating a white-dominated world, and the necessity of preparing Black children for the realities they may face. Desiree also offers practical advice for white listeners on how to educate themselves about race and support efforts toward equity and inclusion. Key themes in our conversation include the importance of cultural humility, the impact of microaggressions, the need for genuine allyship, and how education can foster understanding and change. Desiree's honest reflections encourage listeners to think about their own experiences and biases, making this episode meaningful for anyone interested in social justice and personal growth. In episode 74, I introduced you to Michele Dineen-White, the creator of Play Smart Literacy in Chicago.  Play Smart Literacy is a truly mobile outreach program, meaning that rather than hoping parents can overcome the burden of traveling to a specific location to receive services, Play Smart Literacy goes out into the community, particularly in vulnerable areas, to contact families and meet them right where they are – both literally and figuratively.  They teach workshops at laundromats, gas stations, and standing in line at the market.  The passion for this program - and what it does for children and families - is contagious!  In fact, many members of the team were once on the other side of the program – they were parents learning for the first time that talking and playing with their babies could make a meaningful difference in their development.  They saw the benefits of the program with their own eyes and in their own homes and decided they wanted to share that message with other parents.  In this episode, I talk with members of the Play Smart Literacy team, about why they're so passionate about their work, what that work looks like, and how they've seen it change lives.

Michele Dinneen-White was working in an early education outreach program when she realized something.  The program wasn't actually reaching out to the families who needed it most.  Those families were still required to find the time and the means to get their child to the center in order to receive services.  And for many, that barrier was just too much to overcome.  So Michele decided to create something new.   The program is called Play Smart Literacy and it serves families in the Chicago area.  It's a fully mobile outreach program, one that actually reaches OUT and INTO the most vulnerable communities.  And what is their mission?  To build language and relationships through play.  Michele and her parent play leaders go to where the families are – parks, shelters, mobile markets, Head Start and early care programs, laundromats, gas stations – and they build real relationships with the families they meet, while at the same time building the families' understanding of the connections between play, talk, and child development …AND building their confidence as parents as well.  Their message is clear:  EVERY parent has the ability to have a strong positive influence on their child's future.

The lives of LGBTQ+ Americans are under greater threat in 2023 than at any point in the country's recent past. This summer, the Human Rights Campaign declared a “state of emergency” for LGBTQ+ people in America. The rights of parents to make gender-confirming decisions for their children, of drag artists to perform and for venues to host drag performances, and bans on school employees from discussing gender and sexuality with students are under currently attack through proposed legislation. Simultaneously, the flames of anti-LGBTQ+ sentiment are being fanned by calls for violence by far-right hate groups. Some Ohio lawmakers are also going on the offensive, recently introducing HB 245, which could charge drag performers with a felony if a juvenile is in attendance of a drag performance or the performance is considered “obscene." How can anti-LGBTQ+ legislation co-exist with U.S. constitutional rights? Could passage of a Federal Equality Act explicitly prohibiting discrimination against LGBTQ+ people serve to protect lives and rights of the LGBTQ+ community? Our panelists are: Khris Goins, President and Founder, Black Transmen of Ohio J. Bennett Guess, Executive Director, ACLU of Ohio Amanda Erickson, Director of Education & Outreach, Kaleidoscope Youth Center Chris Equizi, Creator and Performer of Virginia West, and Show Director for District West Our host is Ronald Murray, Associate Director of Health Advocacy, Equitas Health This forum was sponsored by The Lynn Greer Legacy in Civic Engagement Fund, which celebrates inclusion and equity for the LGBTQ+ community, The United Way of Central Ohio, and Huckleberry House. Description: Discussion with longtime driving under the influence (DUI) prevention partner the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) about how the organization works to protect the safety of all those on our highways and roads as well as pedestrians.  Show Notes:  Guest Deputy Director of Marketing & Public Affairs Tim Weisberg from the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) and Lead Deputy District Attorney Gregory Hayes introduce themselves – their backgrounds and current roles.   Weisberg describes his past professional background and his current role managing all OTS marketing, media campaigns and outreach programs.    Hayes explains his past professional background and current role related to DUI cases and the DUI/DUID prosecution and Education Outreach program.  Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.    Weisberg provides background on OTS – its mission, history and how it's working to keep people safe on our roads and highways.  He also details what types of organizations OTS most often partners with and how they support them.  One of the ways OTS supports organizations is through grants. Host, Shelly Orio, discusses how OTS has supported the Sacramento County District Attorney's Office for many years – with grants totaling nearly $8.75 million since 2010. These grants have funded the prosecution of DUI/DUID cases, training for law enforcement officers on DUI/DUID investigations, prevention programs, Crime Lab purchases of specialized equipment to test for certain drugs, many new breath alcohol testing devices and an instrument to analyze alcohol (gas) in blood samples.  OTS grants have also funded Crime Lab staff overtime costs to provide on-site assistance at DUI checkpoints. Hayes shares his experience facilitating the OTS grant, how he has seen these grant dollars put into action and the impact the grant work has had on prosecutions and student education. Weisberg explains the other types of grants OTS funds and for what types of organizations as well as how organizations can apply for OTS grants. Weisberg and Hayes talk about new issues and challenges with DUI/DUID trends.  They both agree driving under the influence of drugs is the most pressing challenge.  Hayes adds that the legalization of marijuana also poses challenges to cases of driving under the influence of marijuana.  Weisberg then explains how OTS sets mission priorities and counter measures to different issues impacting road safety.  Weisberg shares what outreach OTS is currently conducting -including PSA campaigns and safety programs such as Go Safely. He also shares other resources available through OTS on driving safety information. Hayes and Weisberg close by giving their key takeaways from this discussion. Engaging today's students in volunteerism and civic action can be a significant challenge, particularly given the numerous distractions and pressures that exist in their daily lives. As we look at the challenges of engaging younger demographics, some of the most significant obstacles we face are structural— but not insurmountable! To address issues of access, inclusion, resource limitations, and awareness that keep youth voting participation low and national rates of volunteerism falling, we must guarantee that the support structures we build around civic activity are designed to help students tackle real problems in their communities and experience the impact of their efforts.Sources & Resources:Key ClubScienceDirect - Promoting civic and political engagement among marginalized urban youth in three cities: Strategies and challenges by Brady, Chaskin, and McGregorUniversity of Maryland - School of Public Policy - Where Are America's Volunteers by Dietz and GrimmEducation Week - Volunteerism Declined Among Young People by Sarah D. According to the research compiled by Fortinet, 80% of organisations experienced at least one breach in the last 12 months that they could attribute to a lack of cybersecurity skills or awareness. This is something that cannot be ignored. In this podcast, TechCentral speaks to Paul Williams, country manager for SADC and the Indian Ocean Islands at Fortinet, about the company's pledge to address the gap through its Training Advancement Agenda (TAA) and NSE Training Institute programmes. Fortinet is committed to tackling the challenges revealed in this report, and all other evidence, through various initiatives, including the Academic Partner programme and the Education Outreach programme to drive a skilled, inclusive and diverse cybersecurity workforce. It's New Orleans: Out to Lunch

New Orleans annual Entrepreneur Week is a week long throw down of entrepreneurs and the men and women who love them. Resembling a melange of New York s Fashion Week, TED talks, and Cirque du Soleil of business, classes and seminars fill out the day around the star events where NOLA entrepreneurs get to pitch their Idea Village labeled "crazy ideas" in front of venture capitalists and the general public in return for steroidal strength networking, free coffee, sports drinks, and ultimately the lure of 50,000 in prize money. With the assistance of the Idea Village s Cameron Adams in orange, next to the empty dresser waiting for the wood repair person to show up Peter Ricchuiti trades lunch at Commander s Palace for a bag of pretzels at Gallier Hall, covering the Idea Village s 2014 Entrepreneur Week with this special edition of Out to Lunch. But seriously... On this stroll down Entrepreneur Lane, Peter Ricchuiti first nabs Victoria Adams. Victoria is Network Manager of The Idea Village and the fastest speed talker in the New Orleans Metro area. This is not a scientific fact but Victoria s reporting on the developing level of local investor financing in New Orleans is worth slowing down and listening to. Victoria describes how the burgeoning business landscape in New Orleans continues to change. One exemplary proof of Victoria s claim is the arrival of business immigrants like Peter s next guest, Google executive Tara Cannobio. Tara is Global Programs Manager, K 12 Education Outreach at Google, which means spreading the word STEM Science, Technology, Engineering and Math to classrooms around the world. Tara describes her job as encouraging a 2 year old kid who can use a tablet or phone app to be able to eventually build that app. Tara moved to New Orleans recently and has already "dragged hundreds of colleagues" here. New Orleans has been known for its arts long before it was known for anything resembling innovation, other than the liquid hurricane. New entrepreneurial company Where Y Art is combining art and innovation. Collin Ferguson and Catherine Todd launched their online art marketplace where artists and art lovers can meet in a virtual art gallery to view, sell, and buy works of New Orleans art worldwide. The duo also offer business training to local artists who might typically be better at perspective than persistence. Where Y Art are the winners of the NOEW 2014 Arts Based Business Pitch, walking away with a bundle of goodies including cold cash and cool new office space. In an attempt to push his own boundaries, Peter decided to record this show in 3D by adding an unprecedented third guest, Frances Guevara. Frances Guevara is at the, literal, cutting edge of 3D technology. Frances describes the advent of what is currently called 3D printing better simply described as "manufacturing" as an "industrial revolution." A 3D artist, technologist and fashion innovator, Frances lays out the ramifications of what is assuredly coming down the 3D highway being able to circumvent the current default Made In China industrial manufacturing base of the entire US economy. These Out to Lunch shows require a huge support staff. Here is two thirds of it hard at work Tech Director Eric Murrell and researcher Jennifer Smith. All the photos on this page were taken by the fabulously talented Douglas Engel, slumming it on loan from Happy Hour. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Bel canto is a much misunderstood operatic/vocal term. If you're not familiar with the term, you're in luck because today's podcast will help define its meaning. Donizetti, for instance, is considered a bel canto composer; but what does that really mean? Is it just a musical term or does it perhaps have something to do with the text of an opera, it's poetry? Let Dr. Nicolas Reveles, The Geisel Director of Education & Outreach for San Diego Opera, explain it all to you!
