How do we all respond to the seismic events of the US election? Specifically, how do those of us over 50 respond? (and how would the younger generations like us to respond)? This is the question of now. It would be hard to discuss anything else, but my guest this week is uniquely placed to address these questions. As you'll hear, John Izzo was once an ordained Minister in a Presbyterian Church. Now, he's a bestselling author, speaker, and thought leader focused on social responsibility. He's a Board Member of the Elders Action Network and the Elders Climate Action group and one of the co-hosts of a podcast called The Way Forward Regenerative Podcast which is expressly aimed at people over 50 who want to explore what it means to be an elder. I met John on that podcast back in the summer and was so impressed with his approach to things. John is a deeply thoughtful, deeply spiritual person who takes his time to look at things from all angles. He's dedicated his entire career to helping individuals and organisations discover purpose and foster meaningful change. He is absolutely committed to exploring the role of elders in creating a regenerative future. And we need this now, more than ever. Originally we had scheduled this week's guest for a recording on the 4th of November. Clearly this wasn't going to be as constructive as a conversation held in the wake of the election, whatever the outcome. And so we rescheduled and spoke together on Thursday 7th, which gave us time to process the results and speak more directly to a future that is unknowable, but not entirely unpredictable. How do we feel? What world do we want to create? How best can we bring alive a flame of hope from the ashes of the old system? These are our questions - a starting point, not an end point and no doubt this conversation will continue for the rest of our lives. This is our truth for now. What does it mean to orient your life around your mission? We talk about mission all the time around these parts, but when was the last time you stopped, took a deep breath, and embarked on the discernment journey around not just what you do in the world but what you want to leave behind when you're gone from it?This week, kicking off the eighth season of the Mission Forward podcast, Carrie sits down with Dr. John Izzo, author, and advisor who has dedicated his mission to helping companies and individuals find theirs. This conversation is a masterclass in vulnerability; Dr. Izzo shares how experiences from his childhood, growing up without his father, shaped his desire to help people live more purposeful lives. This led him to become a minister, get a Ph.D. in organizational psychology, and eventually advise companies on creating positive cultures for themselves. He's also a leading trend-spotter and shares with Carrie major trends he sees in business and society: rethinking our relationship to work and seeking more meaning, the growing divide between the wealthy and others, and more. We're at an inflection point, he says, where we could create a more regenerative society or head down a darker path. The choice is made by the cultures we create. The bottom line, according to Dr. Izzo, is this: "Ultimately, the only thing that's going to matter to you is what you wound up giving the world, not what you wound up taking from it." We're deeply grateful to Dr. Izzo for sharing his time and attention with our Mission Forward community. (00:00) - Welcome to Mission Forward (02:34) - The Life and Good Work of Dr. John Izzo
Hurt people hurt people. Everything in this conversation focuses on being whole, bringing the whole person to work, integrating the masculine and feminine. Dr John , a best-selling author and keynote speaker who has advised over 800 global companies invites us to lead a certain way. We discuss toxic masculinity and how the messages of being strong, stoic and not asking for help is at the core of male wellbeing (or not). We discuss how the masculine paradigm has dominated leadership with traditional energies of power, status, competition valued above anything else.We discuss how you find joy as a leader and how we have never been trained in being resilient and staying happy. Dr. John shares the three-step framework they use at Blueprint, a collaboration with University of British Columbia to enhance the well-being of men and communities. Insightful and thought-provoking. I love his advice to watch where the puck is going. He is based in Canada. Yes, puck. ----------------------- Craving inspiration? John Izzo & Jeff Vanderwielen share an excerpt from their book, The Purpose Revolution. Episode 208: An excerpt from The Purpose Revolution by John Izzo & Jeff Vanderwielen on Creating Engagement Customers, employees, and investors are no longer satisfied with companies providing good products, good prospects, and good profits--they want them to do some social good, too. These "purpose-driven" companies do better on nearly every traditional metric: greater customer loyalty, higher retention, more innovation, and a healthier bottom line. But a nice mission statement and donations to charity won't make your company stand out. Using scores of real-world examples and practical exercises, John Izzo and Jeff Vanderwielen help leaders find a truly authentic purpose, one that is a natural fit for them and their organization. They describe concrete actions leaders can take to ensure that employees own it, customers and recruits connect with it, and every corporate action and activity reflects it. Was beschäftigt dich?

Today is the second episode in The FOUNDATIONAL 4 series. As we launch the SOUL SET podcast, I wanted to provide clear concepts on how YOU can Set your SOUL to Win at Life. I know YOU can achieve this! In the FOUNDATIONAL 4 series, we are examining 4 Facets of a Healthy, Radiant SOUL. We are using the 4C’s [CLARITY, COLOR, CUT, CARAT used to grade a diamond or gemstone], to address the huge questions of ORIGIN, MEANING, MORALITY, and DESTINY. The Questions like WHY am I here, HOW can I have a meaningful Life, Am I leaving a Legacy, and Does my life even matter? These questions can be overwhelming. If we sidestep these issues, we can sidestep Life. YOU can FILL your life with all sorts of things, but sooner or later, the silence and the void remain. Today, we will talk about what adds COLOR to your Life - MEANING. WHY am I here??? MEANING can add COLOR to a black and white existence. YOU can have the vibrant Life YOU desire. In an article, What Matters Most to Millennials? Millennials Want to Matter, Dr. John Izzo explains the Purpose Gap and how the sense of purpose is an essential factor when they choose where to work and invest their life. When Life comes to an end, it’s gratifying to know YOU made a difference even in the smallest way. How can YOU Discover and Uncover MEANING? The Discovery process begins when you choose to leave behind a blunted existence and step into an Adventure. In every Search, YOU will find obstacles and distractions that will attempt to lure you from this achievement. To find Your Diamond in the Rough, YOU will need to be relentless and persistent. You need to DIG deep, work hard, and pay upfront (not very appealing

What’s the secret to a happy life? Probably the best people to ask are people who say they are happy. So we begin this episode by revealing what happy people say is what makes them so happy. John Izzo, author of The 5 Secrets You Must Know Before You Die (https://amzn.to/2DdJDLA)Probably the one word you hear more than any other throughout your life is –NO! For some people no means no but for others it means something else entirely. BJ Gallagher, author of the book Yes Lives in the Land of No (https://amzn.to/2JXlPNh) offers some great advice for handling the word no when people tell you that you can’t have or do something. Since you will hear NO a lot for the rest of your life – this is worth listening to.Who doesn’t love going to a live concert? And yet when you really dissect the experience, it is probably not as good as we tell ourselves it is. I’ll reveal what one writer has to say about the concert-going experience that you may not have thought about before. (http://www.esquire.com/entertainment/music/a39525/live-music-overrated/)We humans need people. We are social creatures. We thrive with others. One of the greatest challenges of this age of disruption that we're in is it's about speed and technology. However, there's an old school thing that people are longing for. More than anything else, we're longing for humanity. If your company can give your team members and your customers that thing that's missing, you can have a competitive advantage that will be hard to duplicate. You may even find your own humanity in the process. Keynote speaker and leadership expert Dr. John Izzo talks about the purpose revolution and how employees, customers and even investors are asking a different question today. Dr. Izzo says the world is changing and people want meaning, relationship, and authenticity in addition to the product. We're now marketing our purpose, not our company. In that process, hopefully, we'll solve the biggest problems the world is facing and give our children and grandchildren a better world than the one we inherited.Love the show? Our guest this week is Dr. John Izzo, author of six bestselling books, most recently releasing The Purpose Revolution, a manual to show leaders and companies how to transform their corporate culture so they can succeed in the midst of this Purpose Revolution. Izzo calls out three major shifts: our relationship to the planet, our relationship to each other and lastly to the economy. Doing good is good business and is more fulfilling for leaders and employees. Citing a Harvard study, Izzo explains that when asked if activating purpose and social good within their company would make a big difference, 85% of CEOs said yes. This week, Mitch Matthews interviews Dr. John Izzo about his newest book, ‘The Purpose Revolution.' Izzo is a successful entrepreneur and leader, but he's best known for being a trend spotter. In their conversation, they dig into the key trend that will impact the way we lead, market, train and retain employees, customers and clients. Plus, if you truly understand it and harness its power, you can apply this important concept to the way you live your life too! Listen To The Podcast: Dr. John Izzo has been a pioneer on creating successful businesses. He has spoken to over one million people, advised over 500 companies, authored six bestselling books and helped some of the world's most admired companies. But he's probably best known for his ability to spot trends. When Izzo pinpoints an emerging trend… people listen. His client list includes companies like... IBM, Qantas, the Mayo Clinic, Verizon, Westjet, Microsoft and McDonalds. Plus, he's been featured in Fast Company and the New York Times and CNN. In his newest book called “The Purpose Revolution,” Dr. Izzo speaks to a rising class of people worldwide who he's convinced will shape the future of business. He believes this isn't about nationality, income, race or gender. He believes this is a class of people who aspire to have a good life while doing good. It's a really interesting conversation. I hope you dig it. And hey… leave a comment on what stood out to you! I'd love to hear from you. Where are YOU seeing this trend play out? Why do you think it's important? Let me know. Also, be sure to grab your copy of Dr. Izzo's book by clicking here.
What happens when businesses put purpose at the top of the list? Companies that focus on purpose and people are happier and more successful than the ones that don't. The Purpose Revolution drives people to do better and be better. Employees become committed to work because they don't feel like its work when they enjoy doing what they do and where they do it. John Izzo, President of Izzo Associates teaches clients that by connecting with people, you gain competitive advantage with a value level that goes past the product or the service. Learn how you can use purpose to compete with all the disruption and contribute to the social good.

There are a number of reasons why today's leader needs to care about purpose within their organization: Talent is the number one reason why purpose should matter to today's business leaders. - 60% of millennials would take a pay cut to work for a company that gave them a sense of purpose - 37% of the global workforce are purpose-focused Because consumers care and will start to demand it. Customer acquisition and retention are solid reasons. Because we all need to care about what we put out in the world. During months of solitude trekking the Camino de Santiago in Spain and the Sacred Valley in Peru, Dr. John Izzo crystallized ideas for his book, The Five Thieves of Happiness. His central premise is that our natural human state is one of happiness. So, instead of following the predictable path lined with books about the science of happiness, Izzo identifies not what we need to do to become happy but what we must do to stay happy. Yet, constantly lurking at our door threatening to rob us of our happiness are five "thieves." These include control, conceit, coveting, consumption, and comfort. Control: “Two of the most obvious things we try to control are the past and the future. Of course, we cannot control that which has already happened, and we cannot control that which has not yet occurred. The twins of regret and worry (first cousins of control) take away moment-to-moment contentment.” The opposite of control is surrender, so happiness comes when we learn to accept outcomes beyond our control. Conceit (AKA ego) is conquered by service. Just as Christ taught centuries ago, we find ourselves by losing ourselves. And the quickest way to experiencing that kind of happiness is to think of others and serve them. Coveting disguises itself, making us ask how we compare to others. “It takes away our capacity to be grateful…It infects our personal happiness, but it also undermines our relationships with others. Instead of celebrating and sharing the happiness of others we resent their happiness and good fortune.” To unmask the thief of coveting, show gratitude and a genuine pleasure for others' successes. These two practices are especially effective when avoiding the trap of coveting on social media. Consumption, a plague of our prosperous period in history, is easy to identify. We know this thief is near when our thoughts gravitate toward, “I will be happy if...” or “I will be happy when....” To be happy, focus on the moment, not wishing for anything other than our present reality. Comfort is “the subtlest of all thieves.” At face value, comfort does not seem like a threat to our happiness. But we if we become too comfortable with old patterns, we can miss out on the thrill of learning new experiences and skills. To help “kick the thieves out of the house,” Izzo's proposes three solutions to use over a 30-day period: repeat written mantras day and night, keep a gratitude journal, and consciously note at the end of each day if the thieves showed up. The most effective solution to combatting the five thieves of happiness is the one that works best for you. BUY The Five Thieves of Happiness Music Credit Sound Editing Credit

Our episodes can be a bit long sometimes, and it can be hard to remember everything, so this is an option to get bite sized bits of information on a weekly basis. Today's episode is a short segment from EP168: 5 Thieves that Steal Your Happiness with Dr John Izzo. There are many other social contract theories out there that claim otherwise. John Izzo, the author of the book The Five Thieves of Happiness, debunks this claim saying that happiness is actually human's natural state. Dr. John Izzo has over two decades worth of credentials in the field of business, leadership, success, social responsibility and happiness where he's written books, and spoken numerous conferences and summits. One of the social contract theories is that of Thomas Hobbes' expounded on the book Leviathan where he stated that the nature of man and life is poor, nasty, and brutish – and with how the world is currently, it is easy to think so too. Plenty to learn and realize on this episode where we discussed leadership, happiness and what is it that prevents us from sustaining happiness and success. Specific topics we've covered in our conversation includes: Questions that boggled his mind ever since he was a young boy which served as the precursor to his book The Five Thieves of Happiness (1:23). The concept of leadership, not just in the corporate setting, but every facet of our lives where we can influence others in a positive way (2:31), and how his insights on leadership tie up with his perspective of happiness (4:12). A 10-month Sabbatical that led him to his realizations on happiness which he hasn't quite unlocked after years of study (6:03). The practice of stillness, mindfulness and disconnecting which allows for a deeper understanding of things and life (8:50). Happiness defined through etymology, activity, as a virtue and an inner state (12:12). The thief which makes us believe that life is a contest of constant comparison, and how to counter it through gratitude (16:42). The things that Dr. John Izzo compared the state of happiness to (20:30; 38:30). Happiness as human's natural state as seen in children, and the idea that humans survived and thrived because of our inherent goodness and compassion (23:34). The biggest thief that people struggle with, and how surrendering with curiosity instead of resisting can bring happiness (26:48). How another thief leads us to believe that happiness is dependent on what happens around us, when in reality, happiness and contentment is a choice, even in the face of adversity (33:16). How the obsession with our own story prevents us from experiencing happiness, the story of Narcissus and a game he plays with himself when this thief takes over him (40:00). Ways to get out of depression through kindness instead of self-serving initiatives towards happiness (44:45) Why human's dependence to routine and patterns, is a thief to happiness, and examples on how this manifest (47:55). Dealing with the thieves by unmasking and stopping them, and replacing it with a new mindset and a personal experience when doing so helped him a lot (57:15). This episode shifted gears a little bit and focused on personal happiness as a way to improve our relationships. Dr. John Izzo dropped so many truth bombs and statements that you'd probably need quite some time to digest and take it all in.
