Discomfort doesn't automatically denote danger. Identifying the difference and holding those nuances takes practice. Let this episode be part of the lesson plan. Deborah Ooten, PhD., is the founder/director of the Conscious Living Center, and she's the first person to successfully merge the teachings of the Enneagram with the Spiral Dynamics evolutionary model. I'm a fan of both models; my co-host Anne Remy isn't. Friction can rub us the wrong way AND expand our capacity for complex conversations. As Anne says, it's possible to engage with concepts that you vehemently disagree with, express concerns, explore differences, and come out the other end while still having a reasonable opinion of one another. GUEST BIO Deborah A. Ooten, PhD, is the founder/director of the Conscious Living Center. She has her doctorate in clinical psychology, is trained as a craniosacral therapist and is a Certified Enneagram Teacher in the Narrative Tradition. This is Part Two of our preview for our next 10-session course, New Perspectives on the Enneagram for Troubled Times, featuring Allen Proctor, Erlina Edwards, and Ben Campbell. Those familiar with the Enneagram know what a powerful tool for self-discovery and insight it can be. With that in mind we are pleased to announce our latest 10 session course offering from SDI – New Perspectives on the Enneagram for Spiritual Directors and Companions. This unique online course offering from SDI offers spiritual directors and companions the opportunity to connect with peers who are on the leading edge of the Enneagram field. This course will give seasoned Enneagram explorers the opportunity to take a deep dive and develop new perspectives about the use of this medium in spiritual direction and companionship, while honing new skills and approaches to their practice and calling. We recently hosted a preview of this series, inviting many of our Presenters for this course to share their perspectives – what's new, what's stirring for them, how does exploration of the Enneagram take them beyond archetpyes and personality types – and into deeper reality and identity? To learn more about the presenters, the course, and to register, go to sdicompanions.org. You do not need to be a spiritual director, or an SDI Member to attend (though members receive large discounts on the registration price). --- Allen Proctor is Director of the Haden Institute, spiritual director and Presbyterian Minister. Allen works with others to explore questions of identity, relationships, vocation and meaning, using Dream Work, the Enneagram, the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, meditation practices and creation spirituality. Lecture with Professor Kenneth J. Yin. First migrating from northwest China to Russian Central Asia after the suppression of the Dungan Revolt (1862–1877) under the Manchu-led Qing dynasty, the Dungan people boast a rich oral tradition, which served as an important breeding ground for the development of Dungan written literature in the Soviet period. This presentation discusses the findings of an in-depth structural and comparative analysis of Dungan folk narratives conducted in the second half of the twentieth century by a team of leading Soviet scholars comprising Russian sinologist Boris Riftin, Dungan writer and literary scholar Makhmud Khasanov, and Dungan historian Il′ias Iusupov. Primarily based on Dungan oral narratives recorded between 1951 and 1974 in the Soviet Central Asian republics of Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan, the study indicates that Dungan folk narratives are deeply rooted in Chinese storytelling traditions but also exhibit substantial Middle Eastern, East Asian, and Central Asian influence. Detailed findings of this study and the full texts of seventy-eight folk stories are available for the first time in an annotated English version by Kenneth J. Yin, under the title
We're kicking off Season 7 with a topic I've not yet discussed on the show: Holy Ideas. Holy Ideas remind us of the powerful spiritual roots of the Enneagram. They are great, universal, spiritual truths that we forgot or lost touch with, as the ego created an overlay of personality. It's a challenging concept, but today's guest, renowned Enneagram teacher Renée Rosario walks us through the Holy Ideas for each type and reminds us to “relax with awareness into this idea that there is a power greater than us, that is actually taking care of all the things we think we have to take care of in our type.” Renée Rosario is a Core Faculty member of The Narrative Enneagram and a transpersonal, body-centered psychotherapist in Boulder, CO. She has facilitated workshops and classes for over 20 years and loves to work in the Narrative Tradition where all are students and teachers of one another. Renée has been a mindfulness instructor at Naropa University and a peacemaker trained in contemplative social action through the Peacemaker Institute. Her upcoming two classes, Narrative Enneagram Intensive Part 1 and Narrative Enneagram Learning Community will take place on August 4-6 in Menlo Park, CA or you can attend online. Today we team up with the guys at the Art of Growth podcast, Jim Zartman and Joel Hubbard. Jim and Joel are trained in the Narrative Tradition of the enneagram and do some excellent enneagram work. We talked to them about their own stories and how the enneagram has helped them make sense of them. Our season theme of "story" plays a big role in how they approach their podcast and their work with clients. Also, if you like typing film characters, this is the episode for you. Jim and Joel have some insightful takes about the characters in the film Encanto. This was a profound conversation. The Enneagram can be a useful tool for understanding the different ways in which people perceive the world, but how can it apply to critical thinking? Leslie Hershberger has a unique blend of wisdom, practical training, and insight. She has worked with the three-centered Enneagram approach for over 20 years as a consultant, master teacher, coach, spiritual guide, facilitator, and mentor. She’s certified in The Narrative Tradition and in Enneagram in Business and has served on the board of the International Enneagram Association. Leslie talks about how critical thinking shows up in each of the nine Enneagram types. Some of this conversation gets into the weeds of the Enneagram system, but if you stick with it you will come away with a greater understanding of the ways people sort the world. Theories on the Enneagram abound. They have their place. But without actually putting the Enneagram wisdom to work in our lives, discussions about the Enneagram can be a waste of time. Evan Barbee's passion is finding practical ways to apply the wisdom of the Enneagram in our lives, relationships and our world. In this episode Evan tells about her work with the Enneagram, personally and professionally, and how we can move beyond the consolation prize of thinking about the Enneagram to applying the Enneagram. Evan is an Enneagram educator and consultant trained in the Narrative Tradition. Find her at www.evanbarbee.com.

American poet Edward Estlin "E. E." Cummings once said, "It takes courage to grow up and become who you really are." At the EnneaBuzz, we don't like to type others. But Cummings speaks for many Enneagram Type 6s who yearn to live courageously. Our guest today, Paul Van der Grift, is a retired actor and filmmaker, who says being in the spotlight helped him to overcome the anxiety and insecurity that comes from being identified as the Loyal Skeptic. As a Certified Enneagram Teacher in the Narrative Tradition, Paul guides others towards the courage to be strong.

Julie reports back on her trip to Denver where she participated in an Enneagram workshop hosted by The Narrative Enneagram. The Narrative Tradition offers an interactive exploration of the Enneagram through inquiry with panelists who share their personal stories and insights. Tune in to hear about this rich experience and how Julie continues to wrestle with the wisdom and insight she gained over the weekend. Today’s guest is Suze Fair. Suze wears a lot of hats. Andrea and I have a beautiful conversation about listening deeply so that we can be in the midst of the great transitions and transformations of our lives with more gentleness, tenderness, and joy. Listening to her is like a meditation in itself. We talk about letting go of perfectionism and control and surrendering into the tenderness and aliveness of truly living. I feel privileged to get to share Andrea’s perspective with you because she was the first healer I ever knew, and she helped lay the foundations for some of the most radical transformations and blessings of my life. I also share the story of my own healing journey through my debilitating anxiety during graduate school. How I found yoga and emotional healing to help me start releasing the trauma I was carrying in my body. I had been to about every kind of therapist there is to help with my anxiety and I was on a high dose of medication when Andrea introduced me to Eastern somatic practices and the mind, body, spirit connection through Kundalini yoga. This practice ended up being crucial in accessing the trauma I was holding in my body that was causing the anxiety. Andrea is a teacher, meditation guide, and energy healer. She is also a spiritual sherpa, helping light the path for the journeyers who are sometimes only a few steps behind her. Andrea has dedicated her life serving people on the journey to live with the full strength of their soul. We also speak about how to blend western ideas of loving your neighbor and creating community, with eastern somatic and meditation practices to create truly whole sense of being. More About Andrea Ciafardini in her own words.... "I am a Peace Ambassador for transformation of inner-landscapes of both women and men. I pair ancient practices with modern day experience. As the founder of Holistic Connections, Inc., I have designed and taught healing workshops on forgiveness, emotional health, and all aspects of Kundalini Yoga. I also love working one-on-one with individuals who are looking to grow and transform. My most recent teaching is with the team of Designing Your Life for Women workshop.; a process designed by Stanford University on "How to Live a Joy Filled Life." Check it out. My trainings include: Level I Kundalini Yoga & Meditation, Level II Yoga of Authentic Relationships, Mind & Meditation, Stress and Vitality. On this week's episode of Conscious Construction I have the extreme pleasure of sitting with my good friend and Narrative Enneagram buddy Chichi Agorom to talk about her journey with the Enneagram, her work as a mental health counselor, and effective ways we can work with the Enneagram and mental health. Here's more about Chichi: I’m Chichi Agorom, a curious observer of people whose fascination with the experience of being human on a journey toward wholeness and purpose led me to studying the Enneagram. I am a trained teacher in The Narrative Tradition which prioritizes the felt experience and voices of participants, and I also hold a Coaching Certificate from The Enneagram in Business which focuses on the uses of the Enneagram in organizations. I also earned an MA in Mental Health Counseling with an emphasis in Couples & Family Therapy so when I’m not working with the Enneagram, I spend my days working with individuals, couples, and families to cultivate self-awareness and move towards authenticity, wholeness, and joy. My life’s work is to help people feel less alone & more known, and to create spaces that increase connection & compassion in an increasingly divided world. The Enneagram is an excellent tool to achieve that, and so is hosting gatherings. That’s why I’m here, and I warmly invite you into the practice of becoming yourself more fully while learning to hold deep compassion for all that you find in the process.
