Back with a new series exploring the vampire, the ever-popular figure and symbol against which we can define our own humanity. We will be beginning by attempting to find the origin of the word 'vampire' as well as exploring some of the folklore that melded with and was absorbed into the figure of the modern vampire. In the coming weeks we will take a deeper look at some historical 'real' vampire cases and panics, as well as exploring blood and the body and how our changing attitudes to and knowledge of them influence how we view ourselves and the world. Much much more to come beyond that.

Lecture with Professor Kenneth J. Yin. First migrating from northwest China to Russian Central Asia after the suppression of the Dungan Revolt (1862–1877) under the Manchu-led Qing dynasty, the Dungan people boast a rich oral tradition, which served as an important breeding ground for the development of Dungan written literature in the Soviet period. This presentation discusses the findings of an in-depth structural and comparative analysis of Dungan folk narratives conducted in the second half of the twentieth century by a team of leading Soviet scholars comprising Russian sinologist Boris Riftin, Dungan writer and literary scholar Makhmud Khasanov, and Dungan historian Il′ias Iusupov. Primarily based on Dungan oral narratives recorded between 1951 and 1974 in the Soviet Central Asian republics of Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan, the study indicates that Dungan folk narratives are deeply rooted in Chinese storytelling traditions but also exhibit substantial Middle Eastern, East Asian, and Central Asian influence. Detailed findings of this study and the full texts of seventy-eight folk stories are available for the first time in an annotated English version by Kenneth J. Yin, under the title

Eric and Jason are back looking at the cinematic work of Masahiro Shinoda with a look at three of his most mysterious and beautiful films, Under the Blossoming Cherry Trees, Himiko and Demon Pond. These complex dives into Japanese history provide the guys with fertile ground to discuss the role of nature in the Japanese tradition, female independence, and the terror of mass murder along with much, much, much more. Really, dear listener, Shinoda's films are absolutely fascinating and we hope we tap into even a small amount of what makes them so terrific. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/jason-sacks/message

At The Lore Lodge, we're big fans of the unknown. Folkloric creatures, unsolved disappearances, and lost civilizations are what really get us going. As you can imagine, Graham Hancock's Ancient Apocalypse is something we took a keen interest in. In fact, Mattis has been watching Graham since 2019, and largely considers Hancock to be a major reason this channel came into existence. So, we brought in a guy who's made the trending page here on YouTube twice in the last two weeks by debunking Ancient Apocalypse. However, that's not all we're interested in today. The boys will also discuss the concept of "Atlantis" in the sense that there was an ancient civilization washed away in history, as well as the popular (if absurd) theory that there was once a great empire called Tartaria...and that it disappeared like last week. Will Milo be able to convince Aidan that Graham is wrong? Will Aidan manage to persuade Milo into believing in Atlantis? Welcome back to The Lore Lodge... Alex takes the reins for this double tale of folklore and the folkloric, two terms that are fully implicated in the history of fantasy storytelling and cultural expression, as he navigates through and defines each for this latest Footnote episode. Listen as he explains to Chris the relationship that folklore has to ‘official,' codified or canonised discourse and documentation; the role of shared anecdotal evidence in binding a culture together in a folkloric fashion; the collective stories, rituals, traditions, and customs of folklore passed between communities without a fixed author; top-down vs. bottom-up modes of expression, and how folklore has traditionally been a space for the marginal; and the identity of the ‘folkloric' as a stylised and fictionalised form of folk culture. **Fantasy/Animation theme tune composed by Francisca Araujo**

If you're Afro-Latino/a, do Spanish speakers respond to you in English when you ask them something in Spanish? Is it different in the United States compared to, say, Mexico or Honduras or Argentina? If you're well-traveled you might have a different perspective about who can speak which language versus if your travel is limited.Check out their engaging conversation! In this episode, Doni and Dr. Rhonda chat with Emilio Sasamu Thomas about Garifuna history and culture. A professional musician and educator, Sasamu is the youngest member of the Garifuna Collective, a band based in Belize. He plays the guitar, piano and a variety of percussion instruments. Sasamu talks about how the Garifuna people are a mixture of indigenous and African, and about the various tales of how Africans arrived on the shores of the Western Hemisphere. He also talks about his efforts to preserve the Garifuna culture, particularly the importance of preserving the Garifuna language, which even though it may be spoken among small groups around Central America, it's still "alive." "The Garifuna language is alive, even if it's just five people who speak it, the mere fact remains that it is alive," he says. "And so our responsibility now is to teach the other generation to continue the language. It is very important that we recognize that we have a responsibility, and saying that it's dying instead of doing something about it means that we intend to let it die." Once upon a time... horror was something you learned from your grandmother or the tribal elder. It is ancient horror by way of magic and myth, bolstered by the shared beliefs of a culture. This sub-genre is open to a broad range of interpretations and can be somewhat hard to pin down for definition. Leave it to the Scariest Things who were not afraid to give our own takes on what Folkloric horror is all about.

Yin will present on his new book, Dungan Folktales and Legends, a unique anthology that acquaints English-speaking readers with the rich and captivating folk stories of the Dungans, Chinese-speaking Muslims who fled Northwest China for Russian Central Asia after the failure of the Dungan Revolt (18621877) against the Qing dynasty. The most comprehensive collection of Dungan folk narratives, available now in English for the first time, this volume features translations of oral narratives collected in the former Soviet Central Asian republics of Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan in the twentieth century, and first published in Dunganskie narodnye skazki i predaniia (1977), which was edited by the internationally renowned Russian sinologist Boris L. Riftin and compiled by his prominent Dungan colleagues Makhmud A. Khasanov and Ilias I. Iusupov. The Dungan folk narrative tradition is a vibrant and fascinating tapestry of Chinese, Islamic, and various Central Asian cultural elements.

Beto Rincón is a farmer, artist, teacher, and dancer working at Teatro in Seguin, TX. While teaching in Pittsburgh, PA, he met a student who would eventually be a volunteer farmer at Habitable Spaces farm and artist residency. Beto’s involvement with Teatro dates back to when he started dancing folkloric dance at the age of four. His mother also played Mariachi guitar while he was in the womb, the reason he was born with the rhythm that made him a drummer. Since then, Beto has been a member of some of Teatro’s award-winning groups, a dance intern, instructor, and now works as Ballet Folklorico (folkloric dance) Artistic Director with Teatro, a nonprofit whose mission is to provide a better understanding of the Mexican-American people through the promotion and practice of arts. He has also participated in Teatro’s Agroecology and Artist in Education programs where he has taught Mexican-American culture through performing Ballet Folklorico and lectures. Beto also shares his culinary and food passion, a skill he mastered since he was 15, passed down to him from his grandmother who taught boys how to cook because she didn’t have any girls. Meet Beto Rincón, Ballet Folklorico Artistic Director!

Hi Y'all! Today episode guest features the long time Round Rock Icon, Yolanda Sanchez from the Round Rock Ballet Folkloric. Yolanda has been involved with competitive and performance dancing since 1966 in the Austin, Texas area. She has taught 100 hundreds, if not thousands, of young students how to guide their passion to dance into a life-long ability to showcase the gifts each student has. If you like to reach out to Yolanda or want to know more please contact her at 512-659-5667 or at https://www.roundrockballetfolklorico.org This episode was recorded before the riots and protest began across the country. I consciously did not mention the current state of affairs as to give focus and respect to the efforts Yolanda and her team is doing in addressing issues that focus on her students success in and out of her classroom. Folklore is full of villains and antagonists. By a striking coincidence, so are RPG campaigns! Here are four villains drawn from folklore: a Russian singer-sorcerer, a Roma witch-queen, a Persian hero-villain, and an Irish kidnapper-princess. European folklore is full of odd characters that are neither truly hero nor villain. These characters can make wonderful supporting NPCs for an ongoing fantasy campaign. We’ll look at five: a wizard who weighs virtue, an assassin with poisonous skin, a doctor who can rewrite personalities, a magician with a dangerous sense of humor, and a ragged hanger-on who’s much more than he appears. Folkloric giants, made of papier maché, cloth and wicker come to life in a magical way when they dance in the streets during folkloric festivals and parades. They are part of the folklore of 75 countries but in no country does the importance of giants come close to the place they have in Belgium. Jean-Paul Heerbrant of the Albert Marinus Center tells us what he thinks is the reason for the proliferation of giants in Belgium and also tells us about the giant housing crisis in Brussels which is putting a number of the giants in peril. Phil van Duynen, artist, talks about the magic of the giants. See the show as part of the Carolus Festival until 2 September. www.coudenberg.brussels

Jason Hayes joins the show tonight to talk about their GoFundMe campaign to help raise funds to take students in their program to the UK this summer to perform! Call 323 657-1493 to ask questions or join in the fun! Jason is the Director of Theatre and Lead Teacher for Arts, Media and Entertainment at James Monroe High School in North Hills, a suburb of Los Angeles. With productions that include, Oedipus the King, Wiley and the Hairy Man, Zombie Prom and School House Rock Live! along with on campus festivals that include Comedia Del Arte, Shakespeare and traditional Folkloric dance, his students have been selected by the American High School Theatre Festival as one of only 40 schools from North America to perform at the Edinburgh Fringe in Scotland this August, 2015. While his students are severely economically disadvantaged and labeled "at risk" for a myriad of reasons, they have honed their energies into theatre arts and created for themselves the opportunity of a lifetime in their performance of Romeo y Julieta at this year's Edinburgh Fringe. Romeo y Julieta is a bi-lingual Romeo and Juliet translated by the students. Using Shakespeare's language and spoken in Original, Elizabethan Pronunciation along with colloquial Spanish, Monroe Theatre tells the story of "star crossed lovers" from rival Hispanic families living in San Fernando, CA. This is not West Side Story. Romeo y Julieta touches on the, very real, inner-racial tension within the Hispanic community my students deal with daily.

This episode takes you to the beautiful tropical paradise of Chiapas, the southernmost state of Mexico, bordering on the Central American nations. We describe the costume and the dances of the Chamula tribe, especially the songs of El Jibali (the wild boar), El Rascapetate and Las Chiapanecas. We also mention the music from the instrument of the marimba, as we hear the accompaniment of the folklorico dancers at a live performance at an outdoor ampitheatre in San Antonio, Texas, during the Fiesta event in April.
