Michael and Gianna discuss the importance of living out the principles of new creation in the context of community and society. They explore the idea that the church is called to be a new creation community that embodies love, hospitality, and reconciliation. They emphasize the need to reject the dynamics of the old creation, such as power struggles and revenge, and instead embrace the transformative power of love and forgiveness. They also discuss the role of governing authorities and the importance of submitting to them while remaining faithful to the principles of new creation.Takeaways- The concept of new creation in Romans 12 emphasizes the need to live differently and embrace a new reality in Christ.- Sincere love is the starting point for the new creation community- Power with others, rather than power over others, is the redemptive power of the new creation.- Moralism can be dangerous and can distract from the transformative power of the new creation.- Living out the principles of new creation requires a radical transformation of our mindset and actions.Chapters00:00 - Introduction10:31 - The Background of Romans 1215:28 - Embracing the New Creation18:45 - Power Over vs. Power Within the New Creation19:45 - The Dangers of Moralism in the New Creation25:36 - Living Out the New Creation: Love, Unity, and Renewal29:08 - Living as a New Creation Community39:02 - Rejecting Revenge and Trusting in God's Justice

This one is deep so see tons of explanatory resources below. The philosophy talk turns to political talk (easier to grok) after about 15 minutes, but the philosophical context adds a lot of richness to the latter conversation. Patricia MacCormack is driving productive tension between philosophy and political action. Her Ahuman Manifesto is strongly recommended, even to those who may take issue with it in principle (anti-natalism! anti-idpol! anti-human!), because it makes a forceful argument for a politics based in empathy and care as applied to everyone and every thing. Core concepts you might not be familiar with:Posthumanism — if you recall, a kind of running theme of the podcast is "posthumanism is kinda sus.” As a philosophical stance, it means an expansion of categories of agency and vitality, thought and creativity, to forces beyond the mere human. Rosi Braidotti (Patricia MacCormack's PhD advisor) was one of the first major forces in this field, and Patricia has written extensively on it as well (see her Posthuman Ethics). In practice, of course, posthumanism gets confused pretty quickly — Reza kicks off the first episode of the pod with a brutal critique that Patricia sustains here: many people tend to use posthumanism to advance a kind of hard anthropocentrism applied to everything, a way of accidentally inflating the human all the way out to the cosmic level. It's likely good to critique anthropocentrism at all scales, but it is a very challenging thing to do in practice without carrying out what Reza calls “inflation”, assigning anthropogenic models to everything from fish to stones to electromagnetism. E.g. "my politics include this rock" turns pretty quickly to "this rock has some vital characteristics I'm imposing upon it through my own human gaze."Transhumanism — kind of reversal of the posthuman project. Think Neuralink, human cloning, or dramatic surgical alterations. Transhumanism is humanism transcended, the human project continues but with greater veracity, constructed to conquer the future. A nice quote, per the Xenofeminist Manifesto (not quite a transhumanist project but also not not one) is "if nature is unjust, change nature." If the human as presently understood is insufficiently capable to handle its futures, change the human, make it live longer, act more efficiently, move faster.Asemiosis — the absence or breakdown of traditional semiotic processes, where signs cease to function within the established systems of meaning. This is what happens when we operate within a superabundance of signs and references on massive scales. Don't worry about this one too much.Potestas to Potentia — lmao ok. Potestas in Spinoza refers to the word “power” as we most often understand it, authority, domination, or control. Power OVER. Potentia, on the other hand, refers to power as an intrinsic capacity or potential within an individual or entity. The, uh, power within… so to speak. (Michel Serres concept of “grace”, that MacCormack refers to occasionally, is similar to potential). It's a nice way to think about power without the coercive connotations.Irigaray “letting be” / Serres “stepping aside” — many people have theorized political inaction as a type of action. Check out Bifo Berardi's latest interview on Acid Horizon where he talks about “defection" so sickkkk. This doesn't mean doing nothing, but rather not doing (opting out).Knowledge — this isn't as hard as it comes across. Patricia is basically attacking the need for us to know each other to help each other, to understand each other in order to have empathy for each other. Why? Well, understanding requires communication, which means that information is moving through protocols (e.g. language, digitization, facial expressions, etc…) that are always already encoded with power.Difference — also not so bad! What is difference? You and I are different! Everything is different. For many postmodern philosophers, you can reverse that statement into “difference is everything.” And once you start to think of difference as constructive stuff, well, the world gets quite interesting. For people like Patricia MacCormack, difference is probably a good thing and forces that move to hide, cloak, or suppress difference are probably bad.Art — not what you think art is in this context, like a "painting" for example. Instead, it's an encounter with the unknown, a way of communicating without understanding (this follows from Maurice Blanchot's theories of art as event, which one can also find in a different but not unrelated way in the writings of Alain Badiou, who believes that art is a specific kind of truth different from scientific truth or political truth).HMU via @dis.integrator if I can help with this one.

To Be Human - Part Seven: Not So With You. Misuse of power? Misunderstanding power? Non discerning power? Today, we explore the idea that Christians should not seek worldly power, but instead focus on loving their neighbors and embodying the teachings of Jesus. There are two types of power: power over and power with. This sets the stage for a deeper exploration of power dynamics in future episodes. This episode, Mike and Tim explore the concept of power and distinguishes between power over and power with: Power Over is the ability to control or influence others, whether through force, expertise, or social systems. Power With, on the other hand, is relational power that works in cooperation and mutuality. Jesus exemplifies power with, as he serves and empowers others instead of exerting power over them. The conversation also highlights the dangers of using power over, as it inhibits God's work in the world and goes against the nature of the kingdom of God. Further, as we explore the difference between power over and power with, what is the importance of power under (with), which is exemplified by Jesus? What of the temptation to use power over and the need for discernment in using power in a way that aligns with the teachings of Jesus? The conversation touches on topics such as Christian nationalism, the role of the church, and the importance of community and shared power. Welcome to episode #921 of Six Pixels of Separation - The ThinkersOne Podcast. Here it is: Six Pixels of Separation - The ThinkersOne Podcast - Episode #921. In a transformative era for the global workplace, Lisen Stromberg guides leaders towards creating more inclusive and innovative work cultures. As the CEO and Co-founder of PrismWork, Lisen has dedicated the latter half of her career to reshaping the way businesses approach leadership and workplace dynamics. Her latest contribution to this work is her new book, Intentional Power - The 6 Essential Leadership Skills for Triple Bottom Line Impact (co-authored with Corey Jones and JeanAnn Nichols), which serves as a compass for those navigating the complexities of modern leadership. The book emphasizes the importance of empathy, inclusivity, and strategic leadership in achieving a triple bottom line impact. It also outlines six essential leadership skills crucial for navigating the challenges and opportunities presented by the future of work. From the impact of AI on various professions to the rejection of traditional educational paths, Lisen and her co-authors explore the multifaceted nature of leadership in the 21st century. Lisen's journey from a successful career in marketing to a leader in culture innovation and leadership transformation is marked by a critical insight: The work environment matters as much as the work itself. This realization propelled her towards establishing PrismWork, where she and her team have been instrumental in fostering workplaces that not only prioritize productivity but also embrace diversity and inclusivity as core values. In this episode, Lisen (who also authored, Work Pause Thrive) breaks down the current shift in workplace culture (and what we need to do about it). She delves into the nuances of building inclusive cultures amidst the tensions of wokeism, the fragility of the economy, and the evolving nature of capitalism. With the rise of "power skills" in job descriptions and the competitive job market's demand for deep culture, Lisen's insights offer guidance for leaders striving for excellence in a rapidly changing world. She also deep-dives on the rise of women entrepreneurs and the impact of motherhood on career trajectories. By advocating for Intentional Power, she underscores the need for leaders to wield their influence with purpose and empathy, shaping a future where work is not just about profitability, but also about creating value for all stakeholders. Lisen's mission is clear: To inspire leaders to use their power intentionally for the collective good. Enjoy the conversation... Running time: 56:35. Hello from beautiful Montreal. Intentional Power - The 6 Essential Leadership Skills for Triple Bottom Line Impact. Work Pause Thrive. PrismWork. Follow Lisen on LinkedIn. Follow Lisen on Instagram. This week's music: David Usher 'St. Lawrence River'. Takeaways: The meaning of work and workplace culture have dramatically changed, driven by a new generation of talent with a collaborative and inclusive approach. Building inclusive cultures requires the development of power skills such as humility, empathy, accountability, resiliency, transparency, and inclusivity. The future of capitalism lies in stakeholder capitalism, which focuses on meeting the needs of a myriad of stakeholders and creating sustainable long-term solutions. Leadership is not limited to those at the top; individuals at every level have a role and responsibility in shaping workplace culture. The impact of AI on the future of work raises concerns about job displacement and the need for continuous learning and adaptation.  The “middle years” of the future of work are a critical period that requires careful navigation to avoid negative consequences. While there is a growing rejection of college education, essential careers such as plumbing, electricians, nurses, and doctors will still be in demand. Supporting humans in the future of work requires a shift towards capitalism for good, where meaningful services and support are provided to employees. Empathy is a crucial trait for leaders, and there are three types of empathy: cognitive empathy, emotional empathy, and compassion empathy. The optionality of employees and the shift in power dynamics in the workplace require a focus on ‘power with' rather than ‘power over'. The rise of women entrepreneurs highlights the need for better support and infrastructure for freelancers and self-employed individuals. I'm Seeing Four Types of Power

Four types of power play a part in our lives, but the power that will transform you enters your ditch and is with you.  I've seen it all. Through the eyes of my half-dead body, I watch them come, look, and then go. Will no one stop to do what I cannot do for myself? I am alone, and no one wants to engage, connect, look upon my swollen face, and pierce my life with hope. It's a gift of power I need. I need someone to cross the line and do what I cannot do for myself. The disempowerment of abuse Abuse, in whatever form it comes, has a nasty way of taking the life out of you. You are left feeling less than others. You're small, weak, and insignificant. You get stripped of something of the gloriousness that you once were. Abuse that harms doesn't have to fit into the major categories of sexual abuse or violence. It could be a little well-aimed slight by a child in the schoolyard. A put down by a bully. A lack of basic essentials such as affirming touch and encouragement. No one escapes the blows and cuts from living in a broken world. Unfortunately, many of our wounds can remain untreated or undertreated for our lifetime. Many people come to this website because they pray into an internet search engine the words ‘God, I want to die.'. But I wonder what it would be like to pray, ‘God, I want to live fully.' I don't want to live a half-dead life. I want a life where I am fully alive, where wounds have been changed into scars. Abuse cuts and traumas have become beauty marks and toned muscle. The harm now brings something of God's life to others, and as we connect, we ‘mouth to mouth' resuscitate those who robbers and thieves have violated. What would it be like to be fully alive? Overpowered Jesus tells a story about power. “A man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho and fell among thieves, who stripped him of his clothing and wounded him and departed, leaving him half dead. By chance a priest came down that way. And when he saw him, he passed by on the other side.  So likewise a Levite, when he came to that place, looked at him and passed by on the other side.  But a Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was. And when he saw him, he had compassion on him, and went to him and bound up his wounds, pouring in oil and wine. Then he set him on his own donkey and brought him to an inn, and took care of him.  The next day when he departed, he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper and said to him, ‘Take care of him. I will repay you whatever else you spend when I return.' Luke 10:30-35 (denarius, a coin worth about a day's wage.) In Jesus' story, we find a man experiencing the effect of Power over. He had been assaulted, robbed, and left half dead. Thieves, robbers, bullies, and tyrants had stolen something of his glorious humanity. Perhaps a fellow human was the only way to restore something of power within. If you were to look through the eyes of the dying man, what would you see? What expressions of power would your heart engage with? Perhaps it comes down to three questions. Are you with me in my need? Are you against me in my need? Are you ambivalent about my need? Power with, power against, power withheld.  Four types of power What does this dying man see? Power withheld The eyes see the avoiders. Those who create a void. They have the power to do something, but they hold back.Maybe it was fear or a sense of inadequacy. Perhaps they were too busy, or they were holding on to some sense of self-importance. Let's not make excuses for those who withhold good. Instead, we can all do for one what we wish we could do for everyone. Power over He had already seen the violence of ‘power over' relationships, but now another human was moving towards him. But this was a different expression of ‘power over.' This was someone doing for him what he could not do himself. People often use this parable as a justification for rescuing people. Yes, this was a rescue mission because he could not do what was needed for himself.  One of the most challenging and saddest moments of my life was when I worked at the coal face of people with mental illness, and I would encounter people so unwell with their illness that they could not make rational decisions. Illness had thrown them into a ditch. There was typically a psychosis involved. They were lost in a ditch of hearing, seeing, and feeling things that no one else was experiencing.  Often they were a danger to themselves and others. I would have to use ‘Power Over' and call others who had formal power, by law, to take this person into care. So it was ‘power over,' but not to take something away from them; more so, it was to give them something back. The Samaritan did what the man could not do for himself. Power with I like this form of power the best. It's the idea that I will do what I can do, you will do what you can do, and together we will make a difference. The Samaritan went to be with the half-dead man. He crossed the lines. He poured out oil and wine to clean and disinfect. Bandages were bound around the wounds. I wonder if these strips of cloth came from his clothes being ripped apart. This was ‘withness' in deepest connection. Power given The ‘power with' transfers into enabling others to give power to the recovery process. The Samaritan knows that others can help in ways he can't. He uses his own money, two days' wages, and the promise of more to ensure empowerment continues. A healing nest is needed. A power within begins to grow. Something happens in this man. The power within him begins to grow. Strength returns to his body and also to his soul. Perhaps because he has experienced both the worst of power and the best, he now has a deeper awareness of humanity. It is lovely to see someone grow in their internal power. They begin to see the lines of their unique shape.  They see those who have used ‘power over' badly. They see those who have ‘withheld power' and leave them alone. But then they begin to see those with them and want to continue to be with them. As a result, inner beauty and strength grow. Something both glorious and good begins to grow within the soul. Its beauty and strength begins to transform the dangerous roads we travel on. Its love is unstoppable and dangerous, and it must have release. And the day came when the risk to remain tight in a bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom. Anais Nin These four types of power play a part in all our lives. The power that will transform you, will enter your ditch and be with you. It's your eyes I want to see Looking into mine Got you live on my mind All the time. Bruce Cockburn   Quotes to consider Therapists accomplish good results because they are lovers, in the personal sense of that word, and not experts. One of the two is only a little piece of flesh, naked, inert, and bleeding beside a ditch; he is nameless; no one knows anything about him. Warning for anyone who has experienced sexual abuse. I don't discuss it in great detail but it is discussed.    We are all reeling from the video that showed the Dalai Lama transgressing boundaries and being sexually abusive to a child. It's making us question ourselves, our system and for many, we are pointing to our eyes like our Abuelas, “Mira, Ojo! Ojo!” We've had the #MEtoo movement, #TimesUp, victims of Church and cult abuse and more celebrities and communities are discussing all sorts of abuses seeking greater visibility.    What is at the heart of powerful people and those in authority at all levels of society feeling that they can do whatever they want?   Colonization brought more than smallpox to our people, it ended a way of life and created a hierarchical structure that carries “Power Over” patterns into all walks of society and all spaces rather than “Power from within.” Giving credit to witch, author and magical activist, Starhawk for writing about this since the 70s.   How does “Power over” affect us? One of the ways is that we've been taught to outsource our spiritual health, growth and evolution to others. How do we reclaim our inner power during this time of great transformation?    In this episode you'll find a couple of tips on how to know if  you're working with a good healer with integrity. I share about Saturn in Pisces and Pluto in Aquarius cycles that are affecting us personally and collectively.    What makes a good healer? Are we afraid of our own power and leadership? How do we embrace our power and natural leading ability? What is Saturn in Pisces and Pluto in Aquarius and how are these energies impacting the collective? Exploring what it means when we say, “ the heart wants what it wants” Making decisions from our inner knowing Noticing how we ask our intuition questions What does fake “Inner Power” sound like? What does it mean to trust ourselves? What does it mean to hold values that are good for us personally and for the collective Doing the inner work creates less wobble in our energetic fields What does it mean to not doubt your intuition? View here on YouTube:  SHOW NOTES: In today's episode Jenna and Philip have an open and honest conversation about how each of their households handles things like screen time, bedtime and other common hurdles in unschooling.  Before we begin Jenna reminds listeners that she is always looking for new topics and questions you would like to hear addressed on the podcast. For instance, would you like to hear more from Jenna herself, more experts, other ideas? Also, remember to please leave a review as this helps grow the community.    Jenna begins the interview by asking Philip to explain his journey into self-directed learning.  Philip says that he began reading a lot about child development, student engagement, and why students are not fully engaged. He realized that he was becoming the teacher he himself would not have wanted when he was a student. His experience in school was not a good one which was one reason he wanted to become a teacher himself. At that time he felt he had fallen into an authoritarian role. After doing some reading he began to try to make his classroom more child centered. But he says that the writings of Magda Gerber,  a parent child advocate who founded the  Resources for Infant Educarers usually referred to as RIE, was a great inspiration for him. He found this resource when his child was thirteen months old and followed her advice on letting the child lead in play and learning. He had always followed a self-directed path in his own learning but hadn't made the connection that it would be the same for even very young children. He and his wife were surprised and pleased that a child that young could be so self-directed. This was when they became hooked on self-directed learning and knew that they wanted that for their family.      Jenna notes that she is always surprised at how many educators there are who have an epiphany and says that she can relate to the feeling of becoming that teacher that you don't want to be. She says that it felt uncomfortable and wrong but was brought on by stress and expectations which were out of her control. Philip agrees and says that when he was teaching fifth grade at an online school he was on a team that kept him from implementing some of the things he wanted to try. He did create a program he called ‘Connect' in which he would engage with students in order to build a relationship beyond just academics. He tracked grades during this time and saw that the extra engagement with his students did improve their interest and success in class. But, it still didn't make up for the fact that trying to teach everyone the same thing at the same time was really not working. The curriculum keeps teachers bound to a timeline teaching specific skills at specific times.  Jenna asks if there is in his opinion any time that any one skill MUST be learned. Philip says that it is less about when or even what is absolutely needed to be known or learned, but is much more imperative that the child not be made to feel inadequate if they fail to learn something at the time we expect them to learn it. Even if parents don't criticize or punish their child for not learning a skill, they receive the message of unworthiness from standardized testing, the grading system etc.  Jenna mentions that some teachers put the scores on the board following a test. She wonders if this is supposed to motivate the students. Philip says he wonders if it has become more valuable to beat another person rather than to learn and nurture relationships. He says that some of the philosophical reasoning within racism and feminism can teach about children and learning. He mentions the book ‘For Her Own Good' by Barbara Ehrenreich and Deirdre English. The book addresses the wife having no say, and kids often find themselves in the same position. A power over vs power with mentality. Jenna mentions a podcast episode by Brene Brown, where she discusses the Power Over vs Power With paradigm.  Jenna goes on to ask Philip if is familiar with Peter Gray's assertion that language is the only subject that must be learned by age four and does he agree.   Philip says that in his own experience it has been the case that timelines on learning are very individual. He gives the example of his own learning. As he said before he was not a good student even in high school. But, in college he was ready to learn and did well. He supposes that exposure to one's native language would most likely occur naturally.  Jenna says she was speaking with a friend recently and they brought up the fact that as students they didn't learn much about technology as it hadn't been invented yet. Now, everytime new tech comes along they all learn to use it. An example of learning when the need occurs.            Philip mentions that people are even learning things about how things were done ages ago. There are many YouTube channels dedicated to learning skills and tasks of old. Jenna mentions a project in Germany where they've used  period-appropriate tools, materials, and techniques.   Jenna points out that the driving force in self-directed learning is curiosity.    Philip states that within their home school ‘Curiosity is the Curriculum' is their motto. An example he gives of a typical day is this. His kids are really into Pokemon right now. So, they will watch an episode or two and then go downstairs to the basement and act it out. His older son has learned all of the characters, cards, hit points etc. He is using a lot of skills including math. He advises parents to stop and observe what kids are doing and be able to see and recognize that their learning is fun and they are using valuable skills.  Jenna mentions that she has observed her kids especially on excursions and that natural conversations occur that inspire learning. As a teacher she could see the learning but it was very subtle. With her son, his big interest at the moment is video games. He has learned by trying and failing and trying again. As he improved and learned organizational skills as well as the tech, he now shares his skills on Twitch. He learned a lot of soft skills that could one day be applied to a career. Academics she says can be learned and proven, whereas soft skills are more fluid.  Philip agrees that academics have all these benchmarks and soft skills are harder to master. Even though Jenna's son is showing leadership skills, there may be times when he doesn't take a leadership role and that's okay. He goes on to talk about labeling kids. One label he hears a lot is regarding ‘the strong-willed child.' Once you decide your child is strong-willed, you tend to see everything they do through that lens. He wonders how it helps a parent to label a child strong-willed. While they may have been strong-willed yesterday, he believes we should give our loved ones a new chance everyday.          Jenna says this reminds her of a podcast she listened to by Blake Boles interviewing Naomi Fisher on the topic of Nature vs Nurture. Perhaps it is the dynamic between parent and child. For instance maybe the parent is very authoritative and that impacts the child's behavior. It goes both ways and can be very different between children within the same household.  Philip says it is impossible to be the same parent to all of his kids. His kids are very different people.    Jenna mentions that she isn't even the same person around her different groups of friends, so of course it makes sense that it is impossible to parent each child exactly the same way.    Philip says that his wife came back from the store one day and said that she needed to remember what it was like to shop with a three year old. This conversation reminded him that we even tend to label age groups of children. We put expectations of behavior and more on them. He says we need to look at it more individually. This is not A child, this is MY child. She isn't a problem, she is having a problem.    Jenna agrees and says that it might be you that is projecting and actually creating a problem. Everyone has good and bad days.    Philip says we need to not be hard on ourselves as parents, since there are no ‘perfect' parents.    Jenna says that within self-directed learning there is a tendency to strive for peacefulness and avoid conflict at all costs. She asks Philip's thoughts on this.    Philip states that there are only two things in their household that they are firm on. Bedtime and Screen Time. As for bedtime they have ‘room time.' The kids have to spend time in their rooms at night, but there is no requirement as to when they actually go to sleep.    Jenna says that for her, sleep is a number one priority. In her household with her kids, as they are older, and with some experimentation they agreed that everyone would be in bed by 9:30 PM. They don't have to go to sleep, but they need to be quiet.    Philip says he really likes that Jenna discussed her need for sleep with her kids and asked her kids to help her out with that.           Jenna prompts Philip for his thoughts on screen time.     Philip states that he and his wife didn't initially agree on this subject. (She wanted to limit it.) Now that his kids no longer have nap time, this has become Screen Time. They also have another screen time session in the evening. Although it is limited, it has not been a problem. Screens are now part of our culture and kids will most certainly be using them a lot in their futures.    Jenna says she is glad that he and his wife were able to negotiate as it demonstrates what everyone goes through. Parents are hardly ever in complete agreement on every issue. For her family they had years of limited screen time. She says she wouldn't change that because it is impossible to explain to a two or five year old how video games are designed to be addictive. Now that her kids are older, she can discuss it at a higher level. Her son now spends the majority of his time on a screen since his main interests include gaming, tech related everything, 2D animation, 3D modeling, YouTube, Twitch etc. If she sees that he is losing interest in all of the other things he loves such as basketball, rock climbing and swimming, then it would be time to have a conversation with him. She says that one of the superpowers of self-directed parents is that they know their children so well that they notice more when something is off.     Philip discusses the fact that even if a self-directed parent were concerned they wouldn't panic or try to solve the problem on their own. They would as Jenna stated have a conversation with the child and participate together in a solution.    Jenna and Philip wrap up the interview by agreeing that there are so many variables in play. Personalities, ages, etc. There is no rulebook. Parents have to be kind to themselves and their children.   Jenna asks Philip the four questions that she asks all of her guests:    How do you like to learn? Philip says he really likes to learn in tandem with others. Something like an apprenticeship.  What are you curious about? Philip states that he is currently into meal prep and meal planning. Jenna asks if he has resources for that to share. Philip says that he just pulls things from the pantry and experiments.  Do you have any educational resources that you want to share? Philip says that he has found some great courses through Masterclass               Some of the classes he has tried are Graphic Design, Cooking and Guitar Playing.                What is a book, blog or podcast that you recommend? Does what you wear matter? Can we really talk about Autonomy and Choice and then turn around and judge another woman for what she's wearing? What does it mean to wear something that's "professional?" I got questions. And we are gonna talk about it in this episode. Because it goes a lot deeper than your own judgements around other's choices. Power structures and how we unwillingly contribute to them are also a factor. If body autonomy is your jam, then this episode is important. In This Episode You Will Hear: You're not really for body autonomy if you still judge other women for their choices How power structures come into play If we don't get curious or look at our beliefs, we can also be part of the problem. In the material world we live in, there may be things that won't go the way we'd like or things happen that we won't understand. But the truth is that God is working all things out behind the scenes, and it's up to us to trust the authority of His Kingdom.

I'm lucky enough to have been able to give myself the gift of a 27-day sabbatical, which gave me so much clarity into both my personal and professional life. And now that I'm back, I'm inspired to offer some insight about the four common challenges I see across all sorts of boundary questions in various situations. I'll cover the first two challenges today, and the third and fourth next week.   Biggest Takeaways From Episode #142: Even if it's only a few minutes a day, please carve out a few minutes a day for yourself. It's important to give yourself the gift of time even if your life is incredibly full and busy. Most questions about boundaries, regardless of the specific details, center around four specific challenges:  Who's Got the Power? Stinkin' Thinkin' Live and Let Live Change, So That I Can Feel Better There are essentially two kinds of power: “Power Over” and “Authentic Personal Power.” The first type is based in control and fear; we all need to strive for the second type. Stinkin' Thinkin' is thinking that's distorted. You may think that how someone treats you determines how you treat them, or that you need to be on the same page and think the same way as other people.   Highlights from Episode #142: Vicki welcomes listeners to the episode and talks about the value of carving out some time for yourself. [00:39] The next Boundaries Clarifier Workshop will take place on July 27, 2021. [04:10] After receiving hundreds of questions, Vicki has noticed that the majority center around four specific challenges. She will cover the first two today. [05:26] Vicki talks about the first of the four challenges: Who's Got the Power? [10:58] We hear a list of qualities that describe acting from a place of authentic personal power. She also talks about the difference between personal power and ultimatums. [15:25] What does it look like when you think you don't have power? [20:43] Vicki moves on to talking about the second challenge: Stinkin' Thinkin'. [26:12] Being unconscious of what's going on with us is another kind of distorted thinking. Vicki shares an example from her own life. [31:53] Vicki explains why Stinkin' Thinkin' is such a problem. Hello, beautiful people today on the Vitality Feed we have Paula James. Paula James is a movement specialist at the Art of Moving Well. She is a wealth of information and I'm thoroughly impressed with her knowledge with movement and I can't wait to dive into this today and share with you all of her knowledge to help you go throughout your day, working in a better posture. Please help me welcome P aula James. Hello, Paula. Hello, Caroline. Thank you, it's so nice to be here with you. Paula, can you just go through your background a little bit ? Sure, Caroline, thank you. It's such a pleasure to be here with you today. So I didn't start out in movement at all. I was a literature major and a freelance musician and having a marvelous time,  with music and culture. And then I was in a minor vehicle accident that left me with 10 years of low back and neck pain. So I made the rounds of doctors and chiropractors and PTs, a whole bunch of professionals, and I still hurt all the time. It was a few months of a regular yoga practice that took me out of pain. It was really learning how to move differently, how to distribute effort and movements throughout my body. And so I quit my day job and I went off to yoga teacher training and I, during that 10 years that I hurt, I really set the intention that wow, if I have to go through this for this long, but I didn't know how long it was going to be. It just kept going on. I thought, well, I at least want to map the territory so that I come out of it able to be useful to other people. So when I came out of pain, I went off to teacher training and  then I started training in the Feldon Christ method. And so everything was great. I was teaching yoga. I was out of pain. I was training in some other things. And then I was driving home one day from the studio and I watched an older woman cross the street and a few yards up on the sidewalk. She tripped up. And she didn't get up right away. So I parked and I went over to sit down next to her. It was the second time in a couple of weeks that she had fallen and it really came home to me. How so many of the things that I took for granted, not everybody has, and this woman wasn't likely to put on spandex and come to a yoga studio. And even if she did, I wasn't sure what I had that would really meet her. So I started shifting my focus for training to look at well, what's going on with arthritis with multiple sclerosis, with stroke survivors, with the pelvic diaphragm. And I shifted from teaching at a yoga studio to teaching at a rec department so that I got a different, you know, a wider cross section of the population. So I really been looking at well, what, what do we know from movement and alignment that will help people who've got real pain or limitations bridge back to being able to be active. And what have we got that will allow people with arthritis, osteoporosis to continue moving and exercising safely. So that another couple of decades from now they're still mobile because there's no value in pushing really hard now for the sake of burning calories and then doing irreparable joint damage so that you're not able to walk later or you're managing chronic pain. So I'm really looking at that longevity piece. How can people restore movement and ability and how can they remain safely active for the longterm? I mean, we're living like 80, 90 years now. How do you prep for that? And hence why you're on The Vitality Feed.  Basically to sum that up, you took your mess, and you made it your message, took action, and now you're spreading your message to help others. I have the best job. I get to meet people in their tender moments and together we get to find things that help resolve that. That they can really be out in the world again, doing things they enjoy. It's just, it's really fun. That is a very fulfilling  job for sure. Tell us a little bit about that statistics of the lack of movement, because I feel like there's an epidemic especially since all this pandemic . So, you know, it's interesting, I did a little looking into statistics in preparation for today, and I don't know if these are updated for, since the pandemic, but then the national institutes of health estimates that 25% of all north Americans suffer from chronic pain and that's across socioeconomic measures and including children That was when I was looking for statistics, I found some from earlier years. So in, in 2012, which is a, now, you know, a while ago that the NIH estimated that about 14% of adults in the United States had neck pain or problems, 20% with low back pain. 22% with arthritic conditions. And in general, any musculoskeletal pain disorder was 54%. Like, if you don't know, if you don't interact with people around pain, this is what surprises me. Then you don't know. Cause people, you know, they might say, oh, my neck hurts a little bit. Yeah.  I talked to people around physical pain all the time, and I can run it like an auction, you know, go into a group. Who's got neck pain. How about shoulder pain? Low back. How about knees? Hands go up all over the place. That's hysterical. You don't interact with people around that they don't know because nobody wants you to know that everyone wants to pretend everything is fine because they don't want to be perceived as weak and they don't want to not get invited to events. That's true. That is true. I guess most of the time we'll do try to hide that kind of thing, but it's amazing today, more than ever, because so many of our activities are stagnant. And I even noticed that with my kids growing up at sporting events, the big sisters and brothers would be doing the events, but the little they all hung around the outlets and it broke my heart because they weren't moving. They weren't out in the parking lot, throwing the football. They were sitting there playing games with each other, fighting over the plug and it's like, our bodies were meant to move. So thank God for people like you, because we need to get this country back into shape. Yeah.  And that's one of the things that I'm hearing consistently from folks.  Until the shutdown in, in March of 2020, I was teaching 12 classes a week in person. I saw about a hundred people a week. And then when everything shut down last March, I shifted to teaching online. And so I know because I've stayed in touch with a lot of the people, even though that did not continue with me over zoom, you know, a lot. They were going out for walks or to the gym. And also a lot of them were seeing people like massage therapists or acupuncturists or chiropractors. And of course, all that went out the window in the early days of the pandemic. So. Any of the extra complimentary care, anything that people have been getting to help them manage was gone. And, and then a lot of folks were working from home, so they didn't necessarily have a good ergonomic workstation. They were using their laptop sitting on the sofa and, and like you say, not, not getting out and moving very much. So I think any statistics I have from the NIH, if there, before. You know, a month ago, they're probably way out of date as far as what the current reality is like. I'm sure there's going to be its own epidemic of, of pain management. It's really kind of scary. And I think the average person has gained at least 15 to 20 pounds as well.  It's a sad state of affairs. Well, and I think too, the amount standing. So like one of my longtime students, um, is a high school teacher and I'm familiar with her posture because she's been, she's been coming to my classes for years, but she hasn't been coming since the shutdown because now she's teaching high school over zoom. But I've seen her a couple of times out in the world and her posture is much slumpy lumpier. Now she used to teach, standing up when she was teaching in person. And I'm sure she's mostly teaching, sitting down right now. And just, a lot of the uprightness really, you know, being in line with the axis of gravity right over her feet has, uh, it's, it's just really shifted in a way. That's not setting her up for a good next five or 10 years. I think I might've shared with you I've had back surgery. Um, it was really for nerve damage because I was completely losing my left, left leg sensation from my hip to my toes.  Yeah, no, never thought I'd agreed to back surgery, but the surgeon I had was super, super conservative. And he didn't do a lot of work in there. He just basically fixed the nerves. So I still have my three herniated disc, but I, when I worked in corporate, I petitioned the first standup desk. Well, if they offered me a standup desk, of course, they had to offer everyone stand up desk and the general manager used to walk by and he used to say, I spent thousands of dollars on stand-up desks and nobody uses them, but you. And I literally would stand up seven hours of the day. Yeah, it takes off, I don't remember the exact percentage, but it takes off a significant amount of pressure off your spine when you stand up. And I went home with less pain, which is what it's all about. Well, can look at this in the summit when I have the opportunity to share screen and hold up a skeleton and do visuals. The, um, so I used to be a musician, right? And if you think about any string instrument, it doesn't no matter how good you are, how hard you try, how much you practice if the instruments out of tune, you can't make it sound good. And sitting shortens the tissues in the front of the hips and lengthens the tissues in the back. And it doesn't matter how expensive or fancy your chair is or how well you're sitting up. You are setting yourself up for that kind of tuning and standing, has you in a much better balance of the tissue length front and back of the hips. Now, there are going to be some things again that we can look at in the summit about how can you stand up so that you're standing well and you're not creating new troubles. But, um, boy, I stand up as much as I can when I'm, when I'm working on the computer at home, because I feel less tired at the end of the day. Right. I'm less achy. And I'm less tired, if I stand rather than sit. It really is about this tissue length. So if muscles on one side of the joint are too short, then the muscles on the other side will be too long and they'll all be tight. You won't have as good blood flow. You won't have as much responsiveness. You'll just be in kind of a clench. And when the muscles are at their just right length, you're at the best place for having muscles that are supple, responsive, having good circulation, no trigger points, nothing pinching on a nerve. You're just in you're, you're just in a good tone for the tissue so that everything works well. So being too short and too long is going to create tension. And then that tension will interfere with circulation of blood, of lymph, of nerve messages. It's not an optimal situation. Not at all, it sounds painful. And speaking of which, what do most people complain about for pains or aches; like the three biggest issues ? So I'm teaching weekly classes right now on zoom and I kind of run some of them as an improv. And I just ask at the beginning of class, you know, so what do we need tonight? Who are there any body parts, any functions that need attention and the big winners are usually neck and low back. And since the arch of the neck is really closely related to the art to the low back, I really consider those the same request. You might be feeling the trouble more in one place or the other, but it's the same imbalance and it's the same set of activities that's going to address both and then hips and shoulders and then knees. And so those are the big winners that I hear. That makes sense. I totally agree with that. I tell people when I coach, I'm like little things, like, instead of looking down at your phone and when you're reading, looking down at your laptop, raise that up so that your eyes are parallel, and then you're not craning your neck because you just, I don't think people realize if you do this stuff, hours and hours every day, day after day, what kind of effect that's going to have on you longterm. Right. And you know, one of the effects that it has is actually on your bones. There are, there are images that are just scary, especially of young people cause they change faster that are actually growing, like horny deposits at the base of the skull because the head forward posture is so great.  You will deposit bone in response to pressure. And it could be the pressure of a push or the pressure of the pull. And if your head is forward so that the tissues are pulling at the back of the head to keep your head from falling down, you will actually deposit extra bone back there. So yeah, you can change the shape of your bony structure, as a result of posture, how you're sending pressure through and boy, well, you could change it back, but you might not live long enough to reverse some of those changes. And that would take a lot of effort, right? So you're, you're then going to be left with how do you, with the soft tissue team, you have managed the new shape of bones and you shaped those bones from postures. That just blew my mind. Holy cow. That is, that is crazy.  It just makes sense. Your body is an interesting, how it adapts to the pressure of your head leaning forward all the time. I did not know that. Wow. That is so interesting. What do you think about stretching? Stretching, cold stretching, warm? Like what, what is your opinion on it that, you know, what I'm much more interested in is to give a reset to the tissues? Um, so yeah, so before I was a movement teacher, I was a literature major and so I tend to relate to a lot of things. Situations in terms of characters, if your muscles have been holding you in a specific shape for awhile individual muscles might think they're on a mission to maintain a certain length. For example, if you're slumpy and your shoulders are forward, your pectoralis muscles might have concluded that it's their job to keep the upper arm close to the sternum. So now if you go in there right away and try to stretch, you basically setting up a fight and you're trying to ask that muscle to fail at its perceived mission. If you use the other arm to pull that upper arm in closer to the sternum so that you slack in those muscles, in the front of the chest, the pectoralis major. And if you hold that slack for a minute, the muscles conclude. Oh, mission accomplished. Okay. and I don't have to do the work, someone else is taking it over and now the spindle cells reset and they're ready for a new idea. And so now you can go into inviting length and stretching. But I think to, um, to just immediately jump into stretching or strengthening, you're setting up unnecessary conflict and a much kinder way is to go in and reset the tissues. It's very gentle. It doesn't take a lot of time. And then your arms and legs will feel much lighter. You'll be much more available for an upright torso and the muscles will be much more available to work together as a team. So then you can go about your run or your workout in the gym or anything, and you'll have a much more available and coherent team. That is also some new information for me. That is really cool. Wonderful. I took a risk because I have a set of these slackening activities for the hips in particular that I did with my adaptive class last week. And, um, and that's a chair class, so we mostly do things sitting in chairs in there, but I asked them to stand up for a good chunk of class. And I had someone email me that evening saying I'm standing straighter now than I have in eight years and was less pain. Wow. Yeah. And the other people say that they had less pain in their hips and today, cause we're doing this interview also on a Tuesday, a couple hours after I met with that group again, um, they wanted to review that same sequence of things because so many of them got such good results last week. So we, it is, a way of working with the tissues. That's very friendly and gentle and available. Even for people who are very compromised. Like I have people with multiple sclerosis in there and hip replacements and all sorts.  But I've also had people who come in like one young man that would come to class with his mom and then go to the CrossFit gym. And he said his best CrossFit workouts were always on Tuesdays after he'd had a gentle class with me. That doesn't surprise me whatsoever because I  a firm believer in what you put into things is what you get out, with movement and like I say, a reset, I'm going to have to learn about this reset, cause my curiosity is way peak. Oh yay. So, most people are always trying to get the best chair. Can you share your thoughts  a good chair? Yeah. So I'd be delighted to look at this in the summit. It's, you know, images of good chairs and, and good sitting postures. But what I really want to get across is, well, first of all, you need to be sitting well, you can slump on any chair, no matter how expensive or fancy or how many seconds. Adjustable things it has. So you need to use yourself well, and you really need to have at least three to four good sitting options. There's not one perfect way to sit that will solve all your problems. After 10 to 15 minutes in any shape, some of the muscles will start to fatigue. So at  again of the summit, we can look at what are some of the guidelines for a good sitting posture. And then you're going to want to have several in rotate among them. And I really like. We'd love people to be rotating between sitting and standing , because that is really going to be the best of all. But if you are sitting like I've gone to all day trainings that are not movement trainings and we're sitting all day. And so I have several different postures and I usually bring something to sit on to raise me up against and to lean back against the chair. Cause hotel banquet chairs are not any great example of ergonomics support.  So I just do a little preparation to take good care of myself. And then on lunch breaks, I can go for a walk. And at the end of the day, I'm ready to go play. Right. I don't have to recover from the day of training. I'm from the event world and you're right about those chairs that are they're hard. Um, I'm an event junkie, so when I go to an event, my main objective is to get an end chair because I will go stand at the wall and come back and sit at the wall and then come back. So I, that is my goal is to always get an end chair. So I'm not disrupting people. I do the same thing either to get an end or to get a back row and especially right in even just emotional. Is, there's a lot of information coming at me. I feel like I can just handle it better if I'm standing up on my own two feet. If I'm sitting down the, the chance for me to feel overwhelmed is greater. If I'm standing and shifting my weight from foot to foot and I'm just more upright, then I feel a little more like, you know, I'm rising to meet the occasion instead of getting just deluge coming down on topof me. Yeah, I agree with that. More like a power pose. You're standing up you're at attention. I, that makes sense.  I just wanted to share with you one of the things for events that they're trying to implement  in the world is varied seating. So,  the objective is we used to do bean bags, standing tables, and then your typical rows of chairs at an event. The new age concept was to offer the three styles of seating.  I think it's hard to get focused when you're just in the same exact spot for me, it is, I need to move and vary it up. Otherwise you just, I don't know. I kind of fall asleep and you know, it's easy if you just keep moving around a little bit, it keeps the blood circulating, I guess. For me, I just get cold in there. I'm just sitting still on a banquet chair in a, in a hotel room that's cooled off to keep me awake and  I'm just cold. And then when I'm cold, my muscles are tensing up. And, for me, for attending events, the pandemic has been a real blessing because I can do a lot of it from home and I can be standing and I can be wiggling around and I have temperature control. And so  it's made a lot of things very available, in a very comfortable way. I, agree, I like to have multiple screens cause I can watch on one and type on the other, so yeah, there are a lot of benefits. Paula is going to be appearing as part of my summit and, she will be of course, presenting on the art of moving well , she is the movement specialist. So I'm excited about this because I think we all need this, human beings are meant to move, we're gathers and herders and hunters, and we need to move and we just do not and it's a sad state of affairs presently. So  what's a thing or two that we can start implementing? Well, one really quick, simple thing is your eyes are meant to move too. And so one of the real downsides of the pandemic and doing everything online is you're not looking at people across a room or down a hallway, and you're not walking across the parking lot to get to another place. So to give your eyes some breaks during the day, and be looking out the window, look across a Vista, right? Like it have a focal length. That's more than two feet in front of you and, and allow. Allow the eye muscles to adjust to that, get some sunshine for your eyes. To let your eyes rest on something in front of you, but be very aware of what you can perceive with your peripheral vision, so that you're aware more of the context and not only focused because that, that sharp focus , goes a little bit more with the sympathetic nervous system being engaged, right? That you're very focused where as the parasympathetic system, which is set up more for rest and digest and repair of tissues allows you to take in a bigger context. So if you can, a few times during the day, Well, certainly look out the window, give your, gave yourself a distance in a natural view, but also, um, just be aware of what you can proceed with your peripheral vision. It, um, it will be good for your eyes. It'll be good for your posture. And it also just be good for the nervous system to shift into. Oh, right. There's a larger context to my world. Not only this problem that I'm focusing on. That's so cool. I love that, that I never would have guessed that in a million years, you're just such a wealth of information for me. You know, and if I was going to get one more, I would say to, to take a few moments now and then to let your breathing be unhurried because not, not to necessarily be bossy and try to breathe, especially slowly or deeply or anything, but to allow yourself to breathe in and keep breathing in until it feels complete. So that you're not rushing the breath cycle to breathe out and keep breathing out until that feels complete. If a pause arises, allow all the time you need for the pause, because again, it's another cue for the nervous system that there's some leisure. There's the luxury of time here again. Quicker breathing tends to go with danger with the sympathetic nervous system being in charge. And even if you're rushing, especially if you're driving, right, you're not going to get anywhere faster by breathing faster. So even more stuck at a red light, you can be breathing slowly and then you don't have to arrive late as a crazy person. You can arrive at whatever time you do calm and at least well-regulated yourself. And so, um, just taking a few opportunities during the day to let your breathing be unhurried, to take all the time you need. For each moment in the breath cycle can also help give a big reset. That's a fantastic idea. Good point about your breath and something that I've noticed for me right before I got a breathing app was, um, I would hold my breath and I was not conscious of it until I started listening to all this information about breath work, which we will have, a meditation guru coming to the summit. We can look at this in the, in the summit because I can hold up the skeleton, but, and show you. I've been fascinated, the more that I regulate the tone of the tissues in the front and back of my hips, the deeper and easier my breathing because there are so many connections along the muscle and connective tissue between the back of the legs, back of the hips, up the spine, where the ribs connect and up that deep front between the hip flexors, the front of the spine, the breathing diaphragm. And so the more, I actually restore balanced tone to the front and back of the hips, the easier and more free my breathing becomes. You're like Google for the body movement. I seriously this has been amazing. I've learned so much . I can't wait to dive deeper with you during this summit. So my last signature question here for you, Paula, if there's one thing that you can eliminate from this world, what would it be and why? And it doesn't necessarily have to relate to our conversation. I said, I'm going to give you free reign of whatever you wish to say. Well, doesn't not relate. It's the impulse to have power over. And that is partly,  people to people, right. Person to person, the, the impulse to have power over another, I think is a way to not and not create with them. So there can be power with, and you can be powerful as an individual, but, but that desire to dominate and the way I see it, and in my work with individuals with pain is, is that idea of, you know, mind over matter, this power over the body, trying to boss it around is such a stupid way to approach this marvelous, intelligent organism that you could work with beautifully. Um, but I certainly have seen a huge difference in the quality of my relationships with other people who are willing to do power with, and we can both negotiate how we're going to interact and what's going to go on and the power over people who are usually stuck, if I use the writing analogy, they want to be the writer and the director and the producer of any interaction. And I have a bit part, and I'm supposed to read my part of the script that they wrote. Um, but other people who are more into power sharing, we can actually create things and there can be a lot of fun. Better for everybody. Again, then Paula,  good food for thought, for sure. I loved that, hmm. Interesting. Very interesting. Please tell,  our amazing listeners where they can connect with you. And I will also include this in the information for the show notes. Fantastic. I have a website art of moving well.com and I am on Facebook. I have a Facebook page art of moving well with Paula James and a Facebook group, which they can find by checking into the page. And also I'm on LinkedIn, Paula James art of moving well. Oh, right. And I want to thank you, Paula, for coming on the vitality feed today, you have been incredible, I mean, the amount of information that you shared and that isn't even privy to. I love learning, so this was stupendous for me.  I can't thank you enough for taking the time to share, your story and your knowledge with our audience. I really appreciate you. And, I am so excited that you are going to be joining me for my Home Office Hackathon to share with all our remote workers out there , some great hacks to make their day less painful and more productive the in their space. We do promise to offer some good tools and resources for everybody listening and until next time my friends remember,"Life has no remote get up and change it yourself."

There are several different ‘dimensions’ of power. When most people consider ‘power’ they think of the idea of some individual or group having the ability to create obedience in another individual or group. Power can, in a sense, be considered as a ‘relationship between and among groups and/or individuals’. While there are many different arguments... Read More

In this episode I share with you the 4 powers proposed by Author Starhawk in her book “Encounters with Authority, Power and Mystery” - The worldly and only negative form of power is Power Over and that is an individual or singular type of power. There is power with which is combined power. The power to is communal or collective power. The most impactful form of power is the power within. We all have that wonder inside of us or the power within. This power within can be used to bring the power within out of another leading to a power to. Repeat this process and now there is a collective power or a power to. Hence the power of community! Who is your community and where do you derive your power? For episode ten of season two, Tim and Tuesday contemplate what exactly we mean by the concept of power — intergroup, structural or systemic. How can we best share it, and invite more people to pick it up? How can we wield the power we have with integrity?Together, Tim Merry and Tuesday Ryan-Hart are THE OUTSIDE—systems change and equity facilitators who bring the fresh air necessary to organize movements, organizations, and collaborators forward for progress, surfacing new mindsets for greater participation and shared impact.2.10 —— SHOW NOTESTues: As we are getting ready to release a new online course on Shared Work, we realized we never did a podcast on Power. When we say power, we’re talking about multiple different kinds of power — intergroup, structural or systemic. There are three major kinds of power: (1) Power OVER: one group has more, and one group has less (i.e. race, gender, heterosexism, class, ability); (2) Power FOR: based on an advocacy model - I have power and I will use it on your behalf (i.e. therapist in family violence). Comes from a place of good intent but a challenging place to keep your ego and ethics in check; and (3) Power WITH: Coalitions/collaboratives - use our power together to move something forward (i.e. action, agenda). One of the dangers is that it can make us quite transactional with each other.Tim: The therapeutic lens called ‘transactional analysis’ is a lens that can help us understand wherever power is turning up in our world.Tues: Of course there is an element of personal power… and that still exists within this context of power in a larger societal or structural way. I can evolve and transform and be as aligned with my own power as I want but still in this moment, in North America, I have a very different future than you. Could we begin to conceive that, Tim, if you have more power; I have more power? Does power rest among us that we can tap into that is unlimited?Tim: There is something quite natural about power among (i.e. schools of fish).Tues: Cyndi Suarez wrote The Power Manual: How to Master Complex Power Dynamics. I’d love to bring her on to talk to her about what she is uncovering on power.Tim: Power has been misused pretty consistently and therefore has become untrustworthy. It wasn’t until I met Toke Møller that I met a man attempting to wield his power with some integrity.Tues: If you don’t have a great model of power, it is quite hard to determine how you will use it. So instead I pretend I don’t have any and wield it unconsciously or I can pretend it is happening out there and, again, wield it unconsciously. Fear of our own use of power keeps us from some real conversations and real change.Tim: The more I engaged through my work, with people in positions I perceived as powerful, the more I had to deal with my own issues of power. Suddenly, I’m realizing that I am arriving with a fundamental distrust of all these people because of the position they hold. That’s an indicator to me that I had work to do.Tues: For me, I showed up in those rooms not trusting and really because of societal positioning not feeling worthy being in those rooms. As a result, I had to get comfortable with my power.Tim: A lot of the analysis have become codified in our heads and then we become inflexible and then we only see power through those lenses. I feel that one of the essential ingredients of engaging with power is curiosity.Tues: You’re right and so if you don’t engage around power at all, the invitation is to get curious around how power is playing out in your organization and in your work and get curious about it. If you have a sophisticated discourse around power then I think the invitation is to really look at where that’s helpful and where it forwards your work and where it might be holding you back and what else can you get curious about. Let’s not pretend that it does not matter and have some agility and flexibility with it.Poem: “Sometimes” by Sheenagh PughSometimes things don't go, after all, from bad to worse. Some years, muscadelfaces down frost; green thrives; the crops don't fail, sometimes we aim high, and all goes well.A people sometimes will step back from war;elect an honest man, decide they careenough, that they can't leave some stranger poor. Some men become what they were born for.Sometimes our best efforts do not goamiss, sometimes we do as we meant to.The sun will sometimes melt a field of sorrowthat seemed hard frozen: may it happen for you.Song: The Power by SnapSubscribe to the podcast now—in Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Stitcher or anywhere else you find podcasts. Show Notes  Today I am excited to have with us once again my personal life coach, Dena Crowder. Dena is amazing! After working together for two years now, I can't think of anyone that has impacted my life the ways Dena Crowder has. Her wisdom and insight equals that of sages. Now… the last time Dena was on the show we talked about dealing with our Inner Critic. Well, today we are taking the opposite direction and talking about our Inner Power and how our Inner Power Craves Purpose. I can't wait to get into the subject. In fact, it was the topic of our last enormously impactful coaching session. I have so much to learn from Dena. For those of you that don't know, Dena Crowder is a High-Performance Strategist and Chief Spiritual Officer for creators and leaders. She has designed innovative programs for prison parolees, judges associations, CEOs, CNN heroes, Emmy and Grammy winners, as well as executives at many organizations the likes of which include Nike, Disney, Nestle, and Fox. In addition, most recently Dena had the rare honor to give a presentation at a TED X conference that was highly received with a standing ovation. Her topic, naturally, was on Power. In fact, Dena is on a mission to revolutionize the way the world understands and relates to Power. Her aim is to Redefine Power so that we use it for good. Dena believes—and I love this—that "Pure Power" is the capacity to directly influence and manage your life… with wisdom and compassion. If only… it's all about “Power To” and not “Power Over.” You can reach Dena at www.denacrowder.com For more with Charlie Hedges please visit www.thenextchapter.life

The ability to become aware of what type of power game others have got you in can be vital to avoid being exploited!  Power With means that we are working to achieve our goals and desires but not at the expense of others. People playing Power Over however are doing things very differently and are counting on the fact that you won't recognise what they are doing. Backhanded insults, withholding important information, consistent misunderstandings at your expense are all part of the game for those looking to only advance themselves.  Learning not to buy into their clever justifications but rather look at the consistent trail of behaviour can really assist you in understanding exactly what you are up against and how to best respond.

Now maybe we can go out and break down the "Power Over" dynamics that push people down and oppress. Now maybe we can create "Power With" dynamics that mirrors the Covenant Love of the Communion Table. Read - Matthew 21:23-32

And we talked about the importance of providing SPACE: not to make things too binding … too tight … too limited. We need to plan for MARGIN in our time, our financial dealings, our work, and our relationships! We also discussed briefly the importance of control. In this podcast I will share with you more about anointed control and HOW to protect yourself in the entrance to the End Times. ________________________________________ ANOINTED CONTROL FOR THE END TIMESORGANIC POWER AND PEACE IN THE SPIRIT Previously I talked to you about the importance of having―or, maintaining―margins in your life. The definition of “margin” is “An amount available beyond what is actually needed.” One source describes it as, “The space between our current load and our limits.” We emphasized the importance of giving ourselves SPACE. Don't make things too binding … too tight … too limited: Plan for MARGIN in our time, our financial dealings, our work, our relationships! We also discussed an Algorithm for the End Times. An algorithm is a set of clear, precise instructions that can be performed in a prescribed sequence to achieve a certain goal and that has a recognizable set of end conditions. In this podcast we will discuss Anointed Control for the End Times: Organic Power and Peace in the Spirit. If you have not listened to―or read the show notes of―the last podcast, Healthy, Wealthy and Wise: An Algorithm for the End Times, make sure you study it. YOU MUST TAKE AND MAINTAIN CONTROL In order to stay on top during the coming days in which there will be great economic distress―and opportunities for stress―you must take control and maintain control of your environment: spiritual and physical. You do that by affirmative action (planning and implementation) and through prayer with spiritual warfare. Get on TOP and STAY on top! You must abide in the peace zone. Start preparing NOW. MAKE SURE YOU ARE IN CONTROL – ALWAYS CONTROL Thoughts Associations The devil Activities. Have a plan! Remember to plan for recreation, rest and margins.   To be a good steward you must be IN CONTROL of the areas, domains, facilities, and personnel: Over which God has placed you; and, Over which God has given you power and authority. The reason you must exercise control is so that you may carry out the work God has given you to do. You must do it the way God has told you to do it. You must CONTROL not only your thoughts, but also your ACTIVITIES. Have a plan. Know where you are headed: each day and in the future―to the end of your life. You must be flexible and follow the leading of the Spirit. God may want you to change your plan(s) at times, but spend time alone with God so that you can hear from Him and establish your goals: both short-range and long-term (lifetime). Each day when you arise (except your Sabbath day of rest) have a list already made out with the activities you want to accomplish numbered in order of importance (or, priority). To help you do this, every night, or whenever you find convenient time―although forming the habit of making out your list at the same time every day is best―write down on a sheet of paper the THINGS TO DO―or, activities―for the next day. After you have made your list, go back over it and assign numbers (starting with 1) to the most important thing, and then the things of lesser importance. Then, make out another list, writing down the activities in order of importance: 1, 2, 3, etc. You may not accomplish all the things you have written down for the day; however, you will have accomplished the MOST IMPORTANT things. Again, allow for flexibility: the Holy Spirit may change your plans the next day; or, you may find the next day that Item 4 on your list should be exchanged for a position of higher priority with, for example, Item 2. You MUST control the devil, Satan. Jesus said, “Behold, I give unto you POWER over all the power of the enemy.” – Luke 10:19 Jesus gave you POWER: Over the demons (see verse 20); Over the power of the devil; Over Satan, himself. This is part of the Covenant of Freedom which Jesus Christ (the Anointed One, the Messiah of Israel) purchased for you with His own BLOOD! You are FREE: free from the devil, sin, and the world; and you are free to live holy and serve God! In Matthew 12, verses 22-29, Jesus said, “I cast out devils by the Spirit of God. How can one enter into the house of a strong man [or, the house of the devil], and spoil his goods, except he first BIND the strong man? And then he will spoil his house.” The binding and loosing power of the Church is one of the teachings of Jesus. Jesus said, “Whatever you will bind on earth will be bound in heaven: and whatever you will loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.” (Matthew 18:18.) To learn more about Binding and Loosing (with practical examples) study the mini-book Your Greatest Opportunity for Rewards: Prophetic Prayer. (It is a FAST READ.) Finally, you MUST exercise control over your associations. This does not mean you have to control your associates; but rather, be in control of the decision making process with regard to the person(s) with whom you will be associated and those with whom you will NOT be associated. Remember this KEY: Be committed first to God and then God will lead you in whatever commitments you need to make to, or with, people. There are some people with whom it would NOT be profitable in the Spirit for you to be closely associated. This does not mean you do not love them, nor that you do not communicate with them or even work together with them, at times, in the work of the LORD. It does mean, however, that they are not your close associates. One crucially important area to watch for is association with gossips. Never associate closely with gossips; never have them work for you. Love them and tell them about their sin. If a person gossips about other people, you can be sure that under the right circumstances that person will gossip about you! For help in this area, study the book, Don't Let the Little Dogs Bother You. By knowing this fact ahead of time and operating wisely you can save yourself (and the Lord's work) from much harm. Be well advised (or, forewarned) to stay away from busybodies, gossips, and slanderers. Especially, have no close association with them, except to minister to them and help them. Jesus ministered to thousands. He also had eleven disciples He poured his life into (the twelfth one was a devil, preordained by the Scriptures). However, Jesus also had a very close relationship with an inner circle of three: Peter, James and John. God has given you the FREEDOM TO CHOOSE and He will also give you the LEADING TO KNOW with whom to be closely associated. Do NOT try to have associates just to have associates. If God wants you to have some close associates He will cross your path with those of like mind and faith; those with whom you can: Have wonderful fellowship; Have common faith to believe God for great things; Share personal needs, wants, or dreams (aspirations). There may be times when God would have you (lead you by His Spirit) to dissolve relationships that are already established. You must be very careful to listen and obey God in these times or your ministry could suffer greatly. When you dissolve a relationship with someone, it does not mean you do not love them, nor that you do not communicate with them (unless God is leading you NOT to communicate with them). Remember, the key is: Be committed first to God! Be responsible. Be available to help others in whatever way God leads you. You may have to sweat and work hard. You may shed tears at times, but you will have the JOY of the LORD, and that will be your strength. Serve God because you love Him and you are thankful for what He has done for you―and for what He is doing for you even NOW that you MAY NOT SEE or know about―and then thank Him for what He will do for you in the future! Power Over or Power To? The future belongs to women. Around the world, women are inspiring each other to envision a world where women lead, but quite differently. Women are spontaneously redefining power and shaping it in novel ways. According to social justice advocate Gloria Feldt and community advocate Reinette Senum, leadership begins inside with power to rather than power over. How is the leadership of women benefitting us all?
