In April, Israel's Minister of National Security Itamar Ben-Gvir toured the United States in his first-ever trip to the country as a government official. Many Jewish groups refused to meet with Ben-Gvir, a follower of Meir Kahane whose extremism stands out even in an Israeli political scene awash in anti-Palestinian racism. But Ben-Gvir was welcomed by Chabad rabbis at Yale in New Haven, in South Florida, as well as at 770 Eastern Parkway, the Chabad headquarters in Crown Heights, Brooklyn. The latter appearance sparked protests outside 770, which were met with violence by Chabadniks. In particular, a mob chanting “Death to Arabs” chased a female passerby for several blocks, kicking, spitting, and throwing objects at her. Other videos showed Chabadniks lighting a keffiyeh on fire, shoving and kicking members of the Hasidic anti-Zionist group Neturei Karta, and bloodying a female protester (herself a Jewish Israeli). To discuss Chabad's alignment with Ben-Gvir, its long-standing antipathy to leftist movements, and its uneasy relations within Crown Heights, Jewish Currents editor-in-chief Arielle Angel spoke with Jewish studies scholars Shaul Magid and Hadas Binyamini. Fresh off his participation in a protest against Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir's recent U.S. visit, Rabbi Shapiro explains why he believes Zionism is not only a political nationalist ideology distinct from Judaism, but one that misrepresents the Jewish people on the global stage. We explore the historical opposition of traditional Orthodox communities to Zionist projects, tracing the evolution of Zionism from the Revisionist movement of Ze'ev Jabotinsky to the early Religious Zionism of Rabbi Abraham Isaac Kook, and ultimately to the far-right nationalism of figures like Ben-Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich. We also distinguish Rabbi Shapiro's critique from that of Orthodox anti-Zionist groups like Neturei Karta; Rabbi Shapiro's argument is based in the question of Jewish identity rather than anything eschatalogical. Along the way, we discuss Meir Kahane and how his violent ideology culminated in his assassination; Rabbi Shapiro's personal encounters with Kahanists in 1970s Brooklyn; and his message to left-wing Zionists — namely, his belief that left Zionism inevitably paves the way for the far right. Miko Peled needs no introduction - he's a famous guy. But if you want, you can check out his website or podcast.  If you really want to know what kind of guy he is, though, the most emblematic snippet I can think of offhand is this:Miko Peled followed his father's footsteps at first, joining Israel's Special Forces after high school and earning the red beret, but he soon grew to regret his decision. He surrendered his status as soon as he earned it, becoming a medic, and finally, disgusted by the 1982 Lebanon invasion, he buried his service pin in the dirt. (Wikipedia)That about chalks up Miko.In this episode, Miko describes his journey from a member of an elite Zionist family - his grandfather was one of the original signers of Israel's  Declaration of Independence and his father, a general in the IDF - to a pacifistic martial arts instructor and anti-Zionist activist living in Washington DC.

Miko recently had a chat with the esteemed Rabbi Ahron Cohen, a spokesperson for Neturei Karta in the United Kingdom. Neturei Karta is a religious group of Haredi Jews who formed in 1938 and then split off from the dominant Agudas Yisrael political party. Neturei Karta were one of the very few religious Jewish groups in Israel who opposed Zionism and still call for a "peaceful dismantling" of Israel, a nation state they believe is a rebellion against God. Miko discusses the Rabbi's youth and what led him to Neturei Karta, Zionism's relationship with religious Judaism, and how the Neturei Karta advocate for Palestinian human rights and justice. In 1935 several young activists broke ranks with the Agudas Yisroel in Yerushalayim. This group soon came to be called the Neturei Karta. Espousing an extreme anti Zionist stance, the Neturei Karta leadership had it's fair share of colorful characters over the years. Rav Amram Blau was famous, less so the likes of Rav Leibaleh Weissfish or Rav Dov Sokolovsky. Each one added a dimension to the activities of the Neturei Karta, leading it through external disputes even with the Eidah Hachareidis, and internal ones within the Neturei Karta itself. Not limited to the alleyways of Meah Shearim, their influence was felt in the Vizhnitz court in Bnei Brak, in the United States and beyond. President Obama, in his speech to the AIPAC (American Israel Public Affairs Committee) convention on March 4, 2012, in addition to all the groveling he did at the feet of AIPAC and Israel, made a curious statement that "...we will always reject the notion that Zionism is racism."  Orthodox Jew, Rabbi Yisroel Dovid Weiss does not agree.  Rabbi Weiss and members of Neturei Karta were participating in the Occupy AIPAC counter-demonstration to the annual AIPAC' convention and gave this interview to WHTT.  Occupy AIPAC is a coalition of over 350 organizations who oppose the drive by Israel to make war on Iran with the US backing it.
