As an innocent young boy, Nick was at a sleepover with a friend when he first saw porn. A curiosity became an addiction. With all his heart he wanted freedom, but who do you tell you’re addicted to porn? Where do you go for help? Nick Stumbo found the help he needed at Pure Desire. Today Nick is their executive director. Pure Desire is a ministry helping us find freedom and healing from sexual brokenness. Social media and porn are raising our kids. For our kids to come to us with their curiosity so that we can share God’s great design for their sexuality we must normalize talking about sex with our kids. And that starts with letting them know that they can bring any and all of their questions to us!Donate to Moody Radio: http://moodyradio.org/donateto/morningshow/wgnbSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

What do you do when trust is shattered, but no one around you seems to take your pain seriously? In today's deeply honest and hope-filled episode, Leslie sits down with Nick Stumbo, former pastor and Executive Director of Pure Desire Ministries, who opens up about his personal battle with pornography—and the profound impact it had on his wife, his marriage, and his ministry. Nick's story isn't just one of addiction—it's about healing, honesty, and hope when everything seems lost. Together, Leslie and Nick dismantle toxic messaging that pressures wives to “just forgive” or “have more sex,” and instead offer a biblical and brain-based path toward real recovery—one that honors both the betrayed and the struggler. If you or someone you love is silently suffering in a marriage affected by pornography, this episode will remind you: You're not alone, and your healing matters.
In this unflinchingly honest conversation, Nick Stumbo shares his journey from serving as a senior pastor while secretly battling pornography addiction to finding freedom and now helping others as Executive Director of Pure Desire Ministries. Nick reveals how his early exposure to sexual content created patterns of shame and secrecy that followed him into adulthood, marriage, and ministry—despite his sincere faith and leadership position. What makes this episode particularly powerful is the exploration of why churches and seminaries continue to avoid addressing sexual brokenness effectively, despite statistics showing 75% of men and 44% of women in congregations struggle with pornography. Nick explains how the taboo nature of sexuality in Christian contexts creates perfect conditions for shame to flourish while healing stagnates. For full show note details, go to the episode webpage:

On today's PoM Podcast episode I sat down with Nick Stumbo of Pure Desire Ministries. Nick, the executive director of Pure Desire, confronted his own porn addiction 15 years ago. He and his wife found healing through Pure Desire's counseling and group ministries. Nick believes parents should create a safe place to have an ongoing, open-ended conversation with their kids about healthy sexuality rather than focusing on having a one-time conversation about sex. Even though fathers have one of the earliest and most trusted roles in a young person's life, the data shows that they play a much less significant role in the sexual education of their children — this is often because they are also dealing with their own sexual struggles and history. On this episode of BRT, we have a special guest, Pastor Nick Stumbo. Nick is the Executive Director of Pure Desire Ministries and has an extensive background in pastoral ministry. He began his ministry career at East Hills Alliance Church in Kelso, Washington, where he served as lead pastor for over a decade. Confronted with his own pornography addiction, Nick and his wife, Michelle, found hope and healing through Pure Desire's counseling and group ministries. His public disclosure led to a revival of forgiveness and healing within his church, and he continues to lead the way in helping churches become places of healing. Episode Description: In this episode, Kris, Jenn, and Nick share a powerful message for pastors and clergy on effectively supporting women going through betrayal trauma. Using the analogy of how a paramedic would treat a severe wound, they provide six key steps for clergy and support personnel to follow:Key Highlights:Assess the Severity of the Wound - Listen to Her: Nick emphasizes the importance of actively listening to the betrayed spouse, believing her reality, and displaying genuine sympathy. Show kindness and care to provide solace during her crisis.Stop the Bleeding - Focus on the immediate need, not the marriage. Avoid cause-and-effect thinking and allow her to express her emotions and needs at her own pace. Asking "permission questions" will help the clergy better understand her urgent concerns and priorities.Bandage the Wound & Stabilize the Patient - Educate Her About the Healing Process. Inform her there is a healing process, and she will not be alone. Don't Rush Forgiveness: Understand forgiveness and avoid minimizing the situation. Guide Her in the Present: Help her focus on the "now" and provide comfort and hope. Teach the Keys to Rebuilding Trust: Discuss sincerity, ability, and durability as crucial elements of rebuilding trust.Treat for Shock - Normalize the Experience: Minimize isolation, emotional flooding, and embarrassment by providing community and helping her deal with emotions. Provide Community: Connect her with others who understand her situation and can offer support.Support the Injury - Offer Support: Provide resources, encourage her to grieve, help her establish a circle of trust, and teach the importance of healthy boundaries. If the Wound is Too Severe, Call 911 - Ask for Help: Refer her to trained professionals like CSATs, PSAPs, CCPSs, and C-SASIs for specialized support. Why is pornography such a big deal? This is a common question in the culture, but not necessarily one of alarm, but rather questioning why ministries like ours and many others even exist. Is there any real harm to pornography? To help us answer these questions we have Nick Stumbo back on the program. Nick is the Executive Director of Pure Desire Ministries and an author and speaker on sexual issues from a Christian worldview. In our conversation, Nick shares many of the negative effects of porn: biological, mental, emotional, and relational. We look at the many unhealthy patterns porn promotes, the natural trajectory of tolerance (both individually and culturally), the linkage between human trafficking and porn, and then how to live free from the negative effects of porn. Finally, Nick shares a new video series resource called Living Undefiled that takes an in-depth look at the topics surrounding pornography and human trafficking. Many survivors suffer unspeakable abuse in their childhood and never tell another soul about it. My guest Mark McNear is here to talk about his book Finding My Words: A Ruthless Commitment to Healing Gently After Trauma. Mark candidly talks about his painful childhood, the long term fallout from the abuse, what was it like going through rehab, and finding the words and the courage to tell his story. MARK M. MCNEAR BIO Dr. Mark M. McNear is a Licensed Psychotherapist who has over thirty years of experience in clinical work through his private practice in New Jersey. He is a graduate of Northeastern Bible College, New York University, and Oxford Graduate School. Dr. McNear specializes in helping people who have experienced trauma in their life, as well as the maladaptive behaviors that spring forth from their woundedness. Yet, Dr. McNear doesn't approach his clientele purely from a clinical perspective but as someone who also has experienced severe trauma in his life and the healing power found in Christ. In his recent memoir, Finding My Words: A Ruthless Commitment to Healing Gently after Trauma, Dr. McNear reveals he suffered a traumatic and abusive childhood. He suffered sexual abuse and physical abuse starting at the age of four and was repeatedly told he was stupid, a fool, and trash. Dr. McNear hid these abuses deep in his heart for many years – until they caught up with him. Today, Dr. McNear seeks to help others find the freedom and healing in Christ that he himself received once he faced his own traumatic past. In addition to his private practice, Dr. McNear has been a speaker to audiences nationwide. He has also been a frequent guest on nationally syndicated radio broadcasts, podcasts, authored articles, and Op-eds, and been a co-host panelist for a video series dealing with Christianity and Mental Health. “Mark's experience is my experience. Though my childhood trauma and abuse left me with a lifetime of scars, it also did something else. It brought me to the God who loves me. And that changed my life and brought healing beyond measure. Whatever you're going through, God has seen others, like Mark and I, through similar trauma to show you that if God can do it for them, he can do it now, for you.” -- Josh McDowell “It has been said that if we don't transform our pain, we will certainly transmit it. Mark McNear shows us in this wonderful book that the opposite is also true: if we do transform our pain, we can pass on healing, wisdom, and grace to others. McNear, a professional helper, turns his pen on the pain, complexity, and beauty of his own story in a way that will capture your heart. He speaks with deep honesty about his trauma, but also about his recovery by the grace of God. Whether you are attempting to face your own trauma story or help someone around you do the same, I believe Mark's story will be a gift and an encouragement to you.” — Nick Stumbo, Executive Director, Pure Desire Ministries, Troutdale, OR Podcast Links Website: https://dswministries.org Email: diana@dswministries.org Social media links: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/DSW-Ministries-230135337033879 Twitter: https://twitter.com/DswMinistries YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCxgIpWVQCmjqog0PMK4khDw/playlists Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/dswministries/ https://dswministries.org/subscribe-to-podcast/ Available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, iHeart Radio, Google Podcasts, Pandora, Stitcher, Listen Notes Keep in touch with me!

But what does healing from betrayal trauma look like if your spouse is in a public position—doctor, teacher, police officer, judge, or pastor? Today, we're joined by Michelle Stumbo (married to Nick Stumbo, the Executive Director for Pure Desire). We talk through what healing from betrayal looks like when your husband is the pastor. What tools and boundaries are necessary, how it impacts kids and healing as a family, the obstacles you may face, and even how the group experience might look a little different. In the last episode, you heard Bob talk about how Pure Desire helped him break free from pornography. In this episode, we go to the source; Nick describes his work at Pure Desire. Like so many other guys out there (including me!), he was exposed to pornography at a young age, and became hopelessly addicted... ...but didn't want to see it that way. It was just a problem that came up in some "new" way every so often, that he was for sure going to beat, that never really went away. Even when a perfect opportunity was handed to him to try something new, he knew that it would be a great opportunity for those other guys who were actually addicted! Thankfully his wife nudged his ribs and persuaded him to do it. His life was transformed forever. Yours can be too! Join me in this episode as Nick and I discuss his story, and how Pure Desire finally cracked open his addiction enough to allow the healing love of Jesus to restore him. He shares his struggles starting from childhood and into marriage; escape seemed impossible! Yet, with a new and deeper approach, he found his freedom. Welcome to episode #60!In this week's episode, Nick Stumbo, Executive Director of Pure Desire Ministries, shares his story and talks about how to break free from a culture of shame.Trying harder doesn't workAttempting to beat porn in a a try harder mentality leads to a binge purge cycle, and it led Nick to years of struggling behind closed doors and being bogged down in shame and guilt. When we focus on just the behaviour, it becomes about managing a problem on the surface level, but true freedom comes with inner healing which is where the root of the problem is located. Porn is just a coping mechanism to deal with pain, trauma, or even emotion that we don't know how to deal with or regulate well. When Nick dealt with the root, that is when he began to experience true and lasting freedom.Being in a group is vital to healingFor Nick, being part of a group helped him to learn about the underlying issues about his porn use, and when he was honest and vulnerable in a group it helps others as well! We need a group to help us learn and heal, and it breaks us out of the isolation that we tend to hide in when we are struggling with porn. To join a pure desire group click here.Shame attacks us to the core Guilt revolves around the idea that we did something wrong, whereas shame makes us think that there is something wrong with us. It attacks our identity, our sense of worth and it leaves us feeling like we have no value and that we don't have anything worthwhile to give. These are lies that make a porn addiction so harmful, because we feel like the only place that sense of worthlessness is masked over is when we look at porn. This creates a downward spiral that is really hard to come back from until we deal with the sense of shame in our lives. Welcome to episode #59!In this week's episode, Richard De La Mora shares how he's been able to look past the history that his wife has in the porn industry and see her instead as a product of God's grace and transformation!Honesty leads to intimacy...but pray about it!Honesty and conversation leads to intimacy. Richard wanted to know everything about his wife's past because he desired for her to know that he fully loved her despite her past. You have to be ready to hear things that you don't want to hear though. If you're not ready to hear certain things about your partner's past, maybe wait and pray for God's help and guidance in having these hard and awkward conversations. If you can get to where you can be fully open with each other about everything and both have mature responses, your intimacy in marriage will be incredible.Richard took the bullets out of the gun of the enemyFrom when Richard started dating Brittni all the way up to the current day, Britt's old fans have been sending him pictures of her from her old line of work. They've put these pictures on his public Facebook page, taunted him with names and tried to make him insecure. Richard got ahead of this though, by asking Brittni to tell him everything she had ever done. It hurt in the moment, but he wanted everything out so that when others would send him things, nothing was going to catch him by surprise. He didn't want to leave any room for Satan to come and cause division and insecurity in his marriage with Brittni.Strength and wisdom comes from daily intimacy with JesusFor Richard to be able to see Brittni as a beautiful woman of God and a product of grace, even in the midst of receiving pictures and videos from her old fans, he has to draw on a power that only comes from intimacy with Christ. He gets up at 5am every morning to spend time with God. He meditates on God's word instead of just reading it to get it done. He dwells on the wisdom and love of the Lord as he lives his days so that he can live in the wisdom, strength, and grace of the Lord. Because of this, he's been able to withstand things would bring most men down. Now, whenever he gets reminded of her past, he thanks God for the reminder of what He brought his wife out of and for his transformative work in her life.Share With Your FriendsWho do you know that can benefit from this podcast and other episodes coming in the future? Nick and I chat about his journey of discovering freedom from pornography, dealing with negative sexual history, normalizing the conversation in our churches and homes, behaviors vs. core beliefs, and how Pure Desire ministrieshelps people find freedom from sexual addiction. Pure Desire Ministry 4:20 As we begin, will you share with our listener's a little of your story. When did you come to know Jesus? How did you end up working at Pure Desire? "My little brain responded to it the way God has designed our brain to react to that, which is a sense of curiosity, intrigue, drawing, even maybe to level a bonding to what I'm seeing. I'm wanting to see more and yet, at the same time, this repulsion of this is wrong. I can't tell my mom and dad. I don't know what I am doing...Sex came into my life in a way that was both secretive and shameful." "No one really knew what freedom and hope and lasting transformation looked like, so you go away thinking, 'Okay, this time I am going to try really hard not to go back there,' but because nothing on the inside has really changed it comes back." "I remember her saying, 'It's not that I hate you, but I hate the way this makes me feel and because I don't know if it is ever going to change...I don't know if I can stay'....Because of that moment of real pain, by God's grace, He used that to direct us into Pure Desire Ministries, where we went through a year of being in groups, both for myself as the one who struggled and for her as the betrayed spouse. And also a year of counseling, that was the first time in my life I sat down with someone who knew the Bible and also understood the human brain and addiction and how all of that didn't have to be contradictory, but it all fit together." "This was never our plan, but it became, by far, the best discipleship program we ever had" Setting Us Freeby Nick Stumbo "It does feel like people are making a moral choice, and they are. I don't want to in any suggest that because we understand the addictive nature of it, because we start to see what happens in the brain, that doesn't in any way excuse us from responsibility, that doesn't mean we can blame it on someone else...But it's trying to help believers see that there's more going on than just try harder and believe more." "What happens in the church is we see someone's behaviors and we say, 'Stop that! Don't do that anymore! Read your Bible and pray and don't make that decision.' But if we don't help them see the thoughts and feelings that are driving it and even deeper, the core beliefs that in our family of origin or trauma that we've gone through or places we've been wounded...." We talk to Executive Director of Pure Desire Ministries, Nick Stumbo. Nick shares about who Pure Desire is, where we come from, and where we are headed.
" The danger is that for men and women in ministry there is little to no training, guidance, and supervision that is ever offered specifically in the area of sexual wholeness and integrity." These words from our guest, Nick Stumbo, lay the foundation for this episode. Nick was a pastor for 15 years and now leads the sexual integrity ministry Pure Desire. Our conversation will unpack sexual sin and leaders in the church; what to do when a leader is struggling or failing, and how to better prepare leaders to cultivate a personal and corporate culture of sexual wholeness and integrity. *For pastors looking for confidential help:* PureDesire.org ( https://puredesire.org/ ). *Blog:* The Christian Response to Moral Failure in the Church ( https://2.bebroken.com/be-broken-blog/the-christian-response-to-moral-failure-in-church-leaders ) *Books:* Setting Us Free: An Unexpected Journey of Grace ( https://puredesire.org/shop/setting-us-free/ ) Safe: Creating a Culture of Grace in a Climate of Shame ( https://puredesire.org/shop/safe/ ) Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/pure-sex-radio/donations
