Every American was touched in some way by the tragic events of September 11, 2001. For the families and friends of the nearly three thousand people who lost their lives in the Twin Towers, the tragedy became personal. Maureen Crethan Santora lost her son, Christopher, and now she shares her message of love and tribute with a country scarred by loss. Maureen Crethan Santora became an educator in the New York City Public School System in 1967. The mother of five children, her only son Christopher entered the Fire Academy to become a firefighter in February of 2001. Christopher was one of the 345 firefighters who lost their lives at the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. Maureen is the author of THE DAY THE TOWERS FELL and MY SON CHRISTOPHER. ICYMI: The Mo'Kelly Show Presents – An in-depth conversation with retired NYC Firefighter and Stand-Up Comedian John Larocchia regarding the “Laughter Saves Lives Foundation and Comedy Tour,” remembering First Responders lost on 9/11 and because of 9/11 on KFI AM 640 – Live everywhere on the iHeartRadio app
Join the trio as they chat with Matt Connor, a New York City firefighter who is a trustee with the National Coalition of Frontline Workers, an organization whose goal is "to provide unparalleled, compassionate representation for every frontline worker in the United States" and whose focus is on "affecting immediate change, anchoring our work on protecting human rights and preserving the freedom of individual choice". In 2020, Matt and his colleagues were hailed the "heroes of the pandemic", going to work to serve the American people and risking exposure when so little was known about the disease at the time. Fast forward to last year, if these "heroes" did not comply with mandates, they were demonized and fired. Matt's story is representative of thousands of others, and their stories MUST be told and shared and the wrongs against them rectified.
On 9/11/01 NYC Firefighter John Larocchia lost 19 members assigned to his firehouse. John decided that he wanted to remember his brothers lost on 9/11 and continue to be lost due to 9/11 related illnesses. In 2011, John established the LAUGHTER SAVE LIVES FOUNDATION and COMEDY TOUR, with the mission to provide assistance to First Responders trying to overcome financial hardship due to an unforeseen tragedy or illness. In this interview I switch seats with my friend Mario Mergola and the questions are asked of me. My father Robert J. Crawford was a NYC Firefighter who was murdered on Sept 11th. His death and that day has impacted me and so many others in a way that is hard to capture or explain. We talk about my experience that fateful day, how the loss of my father has affected me and what message I hope my listeners and beyond will take from that day. Please give a listen and share.
Gerald “Jerry” Sanford dedicated his life to serving the citizens of New York City for more than 30 years — first as a police officer and then as a firefighter. After 29 years of service as a New York City firefighter — the last nine of which he served in the department's press office — Sanford retired in 1997. Three years later he and his wife would move to Naples, Florida to live out their retirement years. However, as Sanford recalls, retirement life wasn't for him. He found a second calling working at the North Naples Fire Control and Rescue District, which coincidentally would lead him down a path to returning to the city he served for more than three decades one day prior to the devastating Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. In honor of the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, CURE® spoke with Sanford for this special edition of the “CURE® Talks Cancer” podcast about the antique firefighter helmet that led him back to Ladder 42 in the Bronx on Sept. 10, 2001, the immediate aftermath of 9/11 and why he volunteered to return to his old post in the press office. We also talk with Sanford about his several bouts of lung cancer — which may be attributed to his exposure to the air around ground zero — and what advice he would offer others facing a cancer diagnosis.
Today, Fr. Tom Colucci is a priest in the Archdiocese of New York. But back in 2001, he was a lieutenant with the NYC Fire Department. 56: Sacred Stress. A conversation with George Faller. George is an outstanding person to connect with during this virus crisis because while when it comes to whether or not the virus is here, we do not have any choice in the matter. However, we can choose how to respond to the chaos and sense of disconnection that it brings. George's role with the New York City Fire Department positioned him as a first responder to the Twin Towers on 9/11/2001. In the aftermath of this trauma, through education, training, and personal exploration, he began to understand his mission and purpose to be supporting others through crisis and trauma. Currently, as a marriage and family therapist, speaker, and writer, George works to bring his message to others. The most simplified form of this message is that we usually find the sacred within the stressful. But first, we need to find out which kind of stress we are talking about in the first place. In this conversation, George and I explore the two different kinds of stress - distress and eustress- the value within the function of the various ways in which we approach stress both approach and withdrawal, the hidden costs of our attempts to protect and defend ourselves, misconceptions surrounding our interpretation of stress, the influence between our individual perceptions of stress and the physiological consequences to that stress, the science behind coming together for support even when the larger part of our defenses are oriented to retreat, post-traumatic growth and the meaning that often accompanies the most devastating moments of our lives. Bio: Prior to a career in the field of mental health, George spent 20 years as a NYC Firefighter and NYC Police Officer. George received his M.S. in Marriage and Family Therapy from Iona College, where he graduated at the top of his class. He holds a B.A. in Political Science from Queens College. His experience as a FDNY Peer Counselor, particularly following the events of 9/11, sparked his passion to help those impacted by trauma. He is a certified Trainer/Supervisor/Therapist in Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) and founder of the New York Center for Emotionally Focused Therapy where he serves as President. He is a Supervisor with the American Association for Marriage & Family Therapy (AAMFT) and teaches classes at the Ackerman Institute for the Family in Manhattan. He is a Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist currently practicing in Connecticut and New York. George is the director of training at the Greenwich Center for Hope & Renewal in Connecticut and is on the Board of the Porter Cason Institute at Tulane University in New Orleans. George brings a unique and varied experience to his practice. Whether he is providing marriage therapy to Wall Street executives, leading a conference for the United States Military or equipping therapists from around the globe, his ability to inspire is far-reaching. George is also committed to bringing EFT to underprivileged populations and pushing the leading edge of effective therapy. https://www.georgefaller.com https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/foreplay-radio-couples-and-sex-therapy/id1083324677 Band of the Week: Keanu Leaves https://www.facebook.com/Keanuleavesband/ Music Page: https://music.apple.com/us/album/antigravity-machine-single/1475012751 Theme music provided by: http://www.modernnationsmusic.com Brought to you by: https://www.thecenterforhas.com Website for The Sacred Speaks: http://www.thesacredspeaks.com Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thesacredspeaks/ @thesacredspeaks Twitter: https://twitter.com/thesacredspeaks Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thesacredspeaks/

“I’m not a challenged athlete, I’m an athlete with challenges…there’s a big difference.”Matt LongIn 2005, New York City firefighter, avid marathoner and ironman athlete Matt Long hopped onto his bike to do what he did every day — ride from his East side Manhattan apartment north to the Randall's Island fire academy where he helped train the city’s bravest. As he crossed 52nd Street, a 20-ton bus made a right turn from the middle lane. The bus didn't just hit him, it dragged his body completely underneath, where Matt was then quite literally impaled by his bike. After receiving 68 units of blood in the first 40 hours post-accident, Matt spent the next month in a coma. When he woke up, the doctors told him he was facing a one percent chance of survival.Matt had other plans. After a 5-month hospital stint and 40 surgeries in under two years, he did more than survive. He finally came alive. The story of Matt’s accident and his comeback quest to tackle the 2008 NYC marathon just 3 years after his accident was first chronicled in an extraordinary story in Runner's World by Charles Butler entitled A Second Life. That story was later adapted and expanded into Matt's exceptionally inspiring memoir, The Long Run* , a work of co-authorship by Long and Butler (not to be confused with my buddy and RRP favorite Mishka Shubaly's equally compelling Kindle Single, also entitled The Long Run*).Today Matt will tell you not only does he not regret the accident, it is the one thing that has made him whole. There are many words that can be used to describe Matt — firefighter, 9/11 first responder, ironman athlete, accomplished marathoner, advocate, bon vivant, husband and father. But one word will suffice: hero.Matt is a man I hold in high regard as an incredible example of the resiliency not just of the physical body, but of the emotional body — the indomitable, boundless strength of the human spirit in selfless service to others.Great guy. Great talk.I sincerely hope you enjoy the exchange.Peace + Plants,Listen & Subscribe on iTunes | Soundcloud | Stitcher | TuneInProduction, music & sound design by Tyler Piatt.
