EPISODE 484 - Zeeva Bukai - The Anatomy of Exile, A modern-day Romeo and Juliet story between a Palestinian and a JewZeeva Bukai is a fiction writer, born in Israel and raised in New York City. She holds an MFA from Brooklyn College and is the Assistant Director of Academic Support at SUNY Empire State University. Her debut novel, The Anatomy of Exile, will be published by Delphinium Books in January 2025. She lives in Brooklyn with her family. The Abadi Family saga begins when a modern-day Romeo and Juliet story between a Palestinian and a Jew ends in predictable tragedy. The family flees to America to mend, but encounters only more turmoil that threatens to tear the family apart. In the wake of the 1967 Six Day War, Tamar Abadi's world collapses when her sister-in-law is killed in what appears to be a terror attack but what is really the result of a secret relationship with a Palestinian poet. Tamar's husband, Salim, is an Arab and a Jew. Torn between the two identities, and mourning his sister's death, he uproots the family and moves them to the US. As Tamar struggles to maintain the integrity of the family's Jewish Israeli identity against the backdrop of the American “melting pot” culture, a Palestinian family moves into the apartment upstairs and she is forced to reckon with her narrow thinking as her daughter falls in love with the Palestinian son. Fearing history will repeat itself, Tamar's determination to separate the two sets into motion a series of events that have the power to destroy her relationship with her daughter, her marriage, and the family she has worked so hard to protect. This powerful debut novel explores Tamar's struggle to keep her family intact, to accept love that is taboo, and grapples with how exile forces us to reshape our identity in ways we could not imagine.https://www.zeevabukai.com/Support the show___https://livingthenextchapter.com/podcast produced by: https://truemediasolutions.ca/Coffee Refills are always appreciated, refill Dave's cup here, and thanks!https://buymeacoffee.com/truemediaca

Before we start today's episode, I'd like to tell you about the Chronic Pain to Passion Mentorship. This is a one-on-one coaching program where you'll get my individualized support with chronic symptom recovery so that you can get back into your creative work or passion project. As someone who's been through it myself, I have found that creative recovery and symptom recover actually go hand-in-hand. And I would love to support you with that.To learn more, you can visit my website at www.annaholtzman.com/mentorship ••• In today's episode, I sat down to chat with Liliana Doyon. Liliana is a Mexican-American, trauma-informed couples therapist who is Certified in Emotionally Focused Therapy. She also holds an executive position for the New York Center of Emotionally Focused Therapy. She has spent most of her life learning about relational dynamics and how humans work through and with emotion, and she says that understanding emotions such as anger is crucial in unpacking and healing intergenerational trauma and upholding boundaries. Liliana uses examples in her own life to help normalize human experiences and to empower others to do the same. I first connected with Liliana through mutual therapy clients of ours, and as I began following the videos that she shares online, I was really struck by the way she talks about boundaries. Boundaries are a critical skill to develop as part of chronic symptom recovery, and we'll get into why that is in this episode. What I didn't know before I reached out is that Liliana has her own story of physical symptoms — specifically TMJ — that intersects with the healing wisdom she shares on boundaries. I think this is a really special, eye-opening conversation and I'm excited to share it with you. It's happening without us doing anything. But it's taking up energy. You need to power the brain. NAD+ is probably the most critical element in powering the brain. If you look at it from that standpoint of "what do you need to have a productive day?" To have a day where you don't lack energy and mental clarity? All these things that so many people are facing right now. That's NAD+." - Caspar Szulc Your Diet + Lifestyle Should Matter to Doctors "Doctors don't believe nutrition as anything. That is not a factor at all. We've got drugs, we've got surgery, you're good. You don't need to talk to the patient even about their diet or their lifestyle. If you changed the educational system where doctors came out and started more on this functional basis of "tell me about you and what you're doing on a daily basis, I'll show you the results of the labs and we're going to meet in the middle somewhere." We're going to plan something where we start with lifestyle changes. We don't start with heavy drugs and cutting you open. Those are the last resorts. And if you look at medicine, that's their first resort. That's disease care medicine, that's not health care." - Caspar Szulc Biohacking vs Modern Medicine "I truly believe biohacking is just the difference between where medicine should be and just the starting point. What I mean by that is you usually biohack when you're healthy and get super healthy from it. Whereas in medicine you usually start at a sick point and you get to a healthier point." - Caspar Szulc Improving 1% Every Day Is Enough "If you made just 1% improvement every day for a year, at the end of the year, you'd be 37 times better as a whole because of that 1%. Don't think that you have to change so much in one day. Don't think if you can't sleep, you're eating poorly, you have these symptoms, and you're fatigued, that you need to change that within a month. The reality of the story is you've probably been leading up to that for years and years. So it's going to take some time to unravel. And that's ok." - Caspar Szulc Our Health + The Health of The World "We are the microbiome of the world. If we are unhealthy, the world is unhealthy. If we are unhealthy, we don't care that we use plastic everywhere and that we corrupt everything with chemicals. I don't want to put chemicals in my body. I won't give my money to people that produce chemicals. That's then going to the environment and kill it. We're part of the environment. We detach ourselves from nature. We're one and the same. You want to be an eco-warrior? Start with yourself, start with your health." - Caspar Szulc Links From Today's Show Nadovim - 20% off with code "JOSH20" 482 Dave Asprey | Advanced Biohacking For Body Mind & Spirit: How To Train A Healthy Brain, Boost Your Flow State + Remove False Beliefs 462 Ben Greenfield: Should You STOP Using Plant Medicines? Did you know that the health realities amongst generations are different?True healing only comes when the body, spirit, and mind are working in harmony as they are in good condition. In this day and age, we are surrounded by so much modern technology and efforts toward accessibility yet in this fast-paced world, it is also common to find it difficult to support the body and compete with all the external and internal factors that affect our health. All is not lost as Integrative Medicine aims to uncover tools and solutions to regain health from what we think is incurable. In this episode, Kashif is joined by Caspar Szulc. Caspar is currently the President and Co-Founder of Innovative Medicine – a company dedicated to transforming healthcare through an advanced and truly comprehensive form of personalized integrative medicine. Benjamin Lapidus is a Grammy-nominated musician who has performed and recorded throughout the world as a bandleader and supporting musician playing guitar, Cuban tres, Puerto Rican cuatro, touch style/tapping instruments (Warr guitar and Chapman Stick), as well as organ. As a scholar, he has published widely on Latin music, and he is a professor at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, CUNY, and The Graduate Center. Since the 1990s, Lapidus has performed and/or recorded Cuban tres, Puerto Rican cuatro, guitar, voice, and other instruments on film soundtracks, video games, television commercials, and albums with some of the most notable musicians in Latin music and jazz. Some of these collaborations include performances and/or recordings with Andy and Jerry González, Ibrahim Ferrer (Buena Vista Social Club), Pío Leyva (Buena Vista Social Club), Manuel “Puntillita” Alicea (Buena Vista Social Club), Bobby Carcassés, Orlando “Cachaíto” López, Juan Pablo Torres, NEA Jazz Master Cándido Camero, Larry Harlow, Ruben Blades, Típica 73, John “Dandy” Rodríguez, David Oquendo, Xiomara Laugart, Nicky Marrero, Nelson González, Carlos Abadie, Los Hacheros, Pedrito Martínez, Roman Díaz, Paul Carlon, Adonis Puentes, Pablo Menéndez, Bobby Sanabria, Ralph Irizarry, Charlie Sepulveda, Luis Marín, Humberto Ramírez, Harvie S., Hiram “El Pavo” Remón, Gene Jefferson, Frank Anderson, Enid Lowe, Jared Gold, Greg Glassman, Bobby Harden, Brian Lynch, Mark Weinstein, Jeff “Tain” Watts, Larry Goldings, Chico Álvarez, Alfredo “Chocolate” Armenteros, Emilio Barretto, Eddie Zervigón, José Fajardo, Rudy Calzado, Los Afortunados, Jose Conde, Kaori and Yuko Fujii, Roberto Rodríguez, Maurice El Medioni, Michael Torsone, and many others. As the leader of the Latin jazz group, Sonido Isleño (founded in 1996), he has performed throughout North and South America, Europe, and the Caribbean while releasing five internationally acclaimed albums of his original compositions. In 2007, Lapidus served as musical director and arranger for Garota de Ipanema(JVC/Victor Japan) with Kaori Fujii and toured Japan twice. In 2008, he recorded Herencia Judía and in 2014, he released his eighth album as a leader, Ochósi Blues. Blues for Ochún (2023) is his ninth album as a leader. As a composer, Lapidus' music has been recorded by groups in Cuba and Japan and has been featured in documentaries and television. In 2015, Latin Jazz USA awarded Lapidus a lifetime achievement award for his contributions to Afro-Latin music. In 2015, he wrote the liner notes, contributed an original composition, sang, and played electric guitar and Cuban tres on Andy González's Grammy™-nominated album, Entre Colegas. As profiled on the 2023 television show, Shades of Us (https://youtu.be/I_xMYUtgAhA), Benjamin Lapidus was born in Hershey, PA in 1972 to first-generation Brooklynites and the family moved almost 15 times before returning to New York City when Lapidus was 14. Trained in piano from a young age, he moved through a variety of instruments including trumpet and bass before concentrating on the guitar. Lapidus was exposed to music by his grandmother and his father, who played in Latin and jazz bands in the Catskills in the 1950s. Through his father's record collection and stories of his father's visits with his Latin American relatives, the seeds of Latin music were planted. Yet it wasn't until the 1980s that the youngest Lapidus became immersed in Latin music when he moved to a predominantly Latin neighborhood in New York City, where numerous important musicians also resided. Living a block away from Mikel's jazz club, Lapidus still has vivid memories of practicing in Mario Rivera's house or seeing Mario Bauzá walk down the street. Deciding he needed a complete musical education, Lapidus earned two degrees from Oberlin Conservatory and Oberlin College, becoming one of the program's first jazz guitar graduates. In 1994, Lapidus started to play the Puerto Rican cuatro and Cuban tres. After leading his own quartet at festivals and clubs throughout Europe and winning a grant to study briefly with Steve Lacy in Paris, he returned to the U.S. and worked with Joe McPhee, Joe Giardullo, Tani Tabal, Thomas Workman, and other creative improvisers. At the same time, Lapidus began performing with Larry Harlow, Alex Torres, and other Latin music luminaries in New York and Puerto Rico. Lapidus earned a Ph.D. in Ethnomusicology at the CUNY Graduate Center in 2002. His travels to Cuba acquainted him with distant relatives and grounded him in the music of Eastern Cuba. He has taught guitar and Cuban tres at the New School and popular music of the Caribbean, Latin music in New York, and world music at Queens College and John Jay College of Criminal Justice, CUNY. Today, Lapidus is a professor in the Department of art and Music at John Jay College of Criminal Justice and on the Doctoral Faculty of the Graduate Center, CUNY. In addition, he has served as scholar-in-residence with the New York Center for Jungian Studies and the Jewish Museum during several humanitarian missions to the Jewish communities of Cuba between 2004-2016. In 2008, Lapidus published the first-ever book on the Eastern Cuban musical genre changüí called Origins of Cuban Music and Dance: Changüí (Scarecrow Press). He has published numerous peer-reviewed articles and book chapters, translations, and presented papers at international conferences on Cuban music, Puerto Rican music, Latin jazz, and improvisation. He has also written liner notes for a number of recordings. In 2013, Lapidus won a prestigious National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) fellowship for his critically acclaimed book New York and the International Sound of Latin Music, 1940-1990 (University Press of Mississippi, 2021). With endorsements from Rubén Blades, Ilán Stavins, and other prominent academics around the world, this ground-breaking book has been featured on BBC 3 Music Matters, NPR's Afropop, and Alt. Latino shows as well as the Miami International Book Fair and countless news outlets. The book maintains its bestseller ranking in Amazon's top 20 salsa books since its release. A Seattle-based playwright, photographer and novelist, https://www.davidtuckerphotography.com/ (David A. Tucker II) has had several of his plays produced and/or developed at theaters across the nation, including Seattle Repertory Theatre, Abingdon Theater Co., ACT, Tacoma Actors Guild, and Foothill Theater Co. His theatrical works include The Nude, Persistence of Vision, Another Day in Baghdad (about his military experiences in Iraq), Under the Skin and North Wind Blowin', a play with music. David received 2016 GAP funding for Smoke, a project where he interviews, photographs and videotapes members of Ebola burial teams as well as medical personnel who combatted the disease, an Ebola survivor, and staff on the Dead Body Management Teams in Liberia. His intent is to capture this challenging time in West African history by creating a theatrical work that weaves not only dialogue based upon these interviews, but also black and white photographs and video footage of the Liberian people and the locations in which these events took place. David has also been creating fine art and documentary photographs since 1980. His photographic series, The Human Landscape, explores the human figure in studio and natural environments. In 1995 he began DANCEWORKS, collaborating with ballet and modern dancers to capture the transitory beauty of dancers in motion. He continues to explore and add new images to each photographic series. The images in DEPLOYED: Haiti, Kosovo, Iraq were taken from 1994 - 2004 while a member of the U.S. Army. Tucker has exhibited and sold his photographs at a number of galleries and museums throughout the nation, including the Springfield Art Museum, Blue Sky Gallery, Photographic Center NW, M.I.A. Trees, terrain, weather, equipment, you name it. Any combination of these can conspire to put the logger in harm's way. There is some new evidence that these traditional hazards might not be the only things killing loggers today and the results of these new studies may surprise you. On today's episode I have Erika Scott, PhD, Deputy Director at the New York Center for Agricultural Medicine and Health (NYCAMH) and the Northeast Center for Occupational Health and Safety in Agriculture, Forestry, and Fishing to discuss a new study on logging hazards in Maine and some of the surprising results.
Sarah Cliffe is the director of New York University's Center on International Cooperation (CIC). Prior to that, she held several leadership positions at the World Bank and United Nations. Sarah pioneered the work on fragile and conflict-affected states at the World Bank, serving also as the Special Representative for the 2011 World Development Report on Conflict, Security, and Development. At the UN, she spearheaded efforts to help countries build civilian capacities to strengthen peacebuilding and post-conflict transitions. Sarah's vast experience ranges from countries as diverse as Afghanistan, Rwanda, South Africa, Indonesia, and Timor-Leste. She began her career in the United Kingdom and has degrees from Cambridge University and Columbia University. This episode is full of big questions and insightful answers from the very beginning. To start, we speak to Sarah about her formative years, and how her early impressions of fragility and conflict were actually shaped by her upbringing in a mining town in Wales at a time of social upheaval in the United Kingdom. She also shares her perspectives on what communities at risk in the UK, South Africa, and Rwanda had in common – and why some were more resilient. Our conversation then turns more conceptual, as we take a look at how the insights of her work at the World Bank on conflict, security, and development can help us understand today's global fragility trends. We then explore in depth the big challenges on the world stage ahead of the UN's General Assembly meetings in September. How are the growing tensions between the US, Russia, and China affecting global governance, especially the UN? How has Russia's invasion of Ukraine divided the international community and what are the perspectives of developing countries? What factors have influenced responses to refugees from Ukraine and beyond? How is the future of multilateralism intertwined with domestic politics? And are there any silver linings to geopolitical fragmentation and the new Cold War between the US and China? We conclude on a high note, talking about reasons to be hopeful – listen to the episode to hear Sarah share many more insights into geopolitics, fragility, and the future of global governance. We conclude on a high note, talking about hope and how history can give us reasons to be hopeful. Do you have trouble sleeping? Some 50–70 million people in the U.S suffer from insomnia, with 1 in 3 adults failing to get enough sleep. But what's the reason behind all this sleeplessness? From noisy neighbors and blue light exposure to EMFs and caffeine use, there are too many culprits to find one root cause. That's why we're speaking with Nicole Ritieni, a nurse at the New York Center for Innovative Medicine and graduate of the Institute for Integrative Nutrition, to walk us through some easy ways to fix our sleep hygiene and ensure regenerative, quality sleep.
If you were convinced that you had less than two years to live, would you accept your fate, or fight until your last breath to try and get better? That is the question we explore in our conversation with a Lyme disease survivor and former patient at the New York Center for Innovative Medicine. This is the Story of Celebrating Your Lymeaversary with Jen Blake.
For today's short story, we're going to get into the subject of peptides with someone who is very familiar with peptide injections — and very familiar with our work as a Doctor at the New York Center for Innovative Medicine. Judge Michael Corriero (Ret.) serves as one of three judges on CBS Media Ventures' Emmy-nominated syndicated court program HOT BENCH, created by Judge Judy Sheindlin. The show returned for its eighth season on September 13, 2021. During the 2020-21 season, HOT BENCH was once again the #2 court program in daytime television in household ratings and all major demographics. It has been # 2 across-the-board in all those categories since 2015. Prior to joining HOT BENCH, Judge Corriero served as a prosecutor in the office of Manhattan District Attorney Frank Hogan, a criminal defense attorney and a judge for 28 years in the criminal courts of New York State. For 16 years, he presided over Manhattan's Youth Part, a special court he created in the Supreme Court of New York State designed to focus attention and scarce resources on young offenders prosecuted as adults pursuant to New York State's Juvenile Offender Law. Under Judge Corriero's innovative leadership, the Youth Part became a model for mobilization and coordination of treatment and social services for children prosecuted in adult courts. He retired from the bench in 2008 to become the Executive Director of Big Brothers Big Sisters of New York City. In 2010, he left Big Brothers Big Sisters to establish the New York Center for Juvenile Justice. The Center promoted a comprehensive model of justice for minors that treats children as children and responds to their misconduct with strategies designed to improve their chances of becoming constructive members of society. An important element of the Center's advocacy was recognized in the enactment of New York State's 2017 Raise The Age Legislation which incorporated and institutionalized the Youth Part Model. In 2012, Judge Corriero founded, along with the New York Foundling, one of New York's oldest and respected social service agencies run by the Sisters of Charity, the Families Rising Project - an alternative-to-incarceration program that works not only with a young offender but with his/her entire family. Judge Corriero is an alumnus of St. John's University School of Law and St. John's University. He was a member of the Law Review and served as an associate editor. He graduated from St. John's University College with a Bachelor of Arts degree majoring in social science. He is the author of a book titled, “Judging Children as Children: A Proposal for a Juvenile Justice System,” which is a blueprint for juvenile justice reform. He is regarded nationally and internationally as an expert in juvenile justice. He has traveled extensively, lecturing and advising legal institutions in numerous countries, including Israel, South Africa, Sierra Leone, Kazakhstan and Peru. Judge Corriero is the recipient of numerous honors and awards, including: The New York Foundling's Lifetime Achievement Award (2015); Advocate of the Decade (2014) presented by Families on the Move of New York City, Inc.; The Eleanor Roosevelt Award (2011), presented by Citizens Committee for Children; Asian Pacific American Advocates (OCA – New York) Community Service Award (2011); Excellence in Juvenile Justice, Juvenile Detention Association of New York State (2007); Frank S. Hogan Associates Recognition Award (2007); Excellence in Children's Advocacy, presented by 100 Women Against Child Abuse (2006); The Citizens' Committee for Children's Annual Founders' Award (2004); The Howard A. Levine Award for Outstanding Work in the area of children and the law (New York State Bar Association 1999); The Livingston Hall Juvenile Justice Award (American Bar Association 1997); Outstanding Service on Behalf of Youth Award (ELEM 1996, 2007); The Conrad B. Mattox, Jr. Commonwealth Debate Winner (University of Richmond 1996); The Charles A. Rapallo Award (Colombian Lawyers Association 1994); and he participated as a Polsky Judicial Fellow at the Aspen Institute's Justice and Society Seminar (2003). Judge Corriero served at the request of the former Chief Judge of New York State, Judith Kaye, on the New York State Permanent Commission on Justice for Children. He also served on Mayor Michael Bloomberg's Committee on the Judiciary. He has previously served on the New York State Probation Commission Task Force and former New York Governor David Patterson's Task Force on Transforming Juvenile Justice. Judge Corriero also served as Chairperson of the Committee on Juvenile Justice of the Association of the Bar of the City of New York. He was Co-chair of the American Bar Association's Juvenile Justice Committee. He is a member of the New York State Bar Association's Committee on Children and the Law. He served as a trustee of Big Brothers Big Sisters of New York City; a member of the Advisory Committee of Citizens' Committee for Children; a member of the Professional Committee of ELEM (Youth at Risk in Israel); and a board member of Transfiguration Grammar School Education Association. HOT BENCH is created by Judge Judy Sheindlin and executive produced by David Theodosopoulos. Belinda Jackson and James Glover are co-executive producers. Lauren Schmidt is a Principal at KPF in New York City. The youngest woman in KPF's history to be named Principal, Lauren is invaluable to projects of all types, coordinating with multiple stakeholders, consultants and design teams, and overseeing projects through all phases. Lauren has served as designer and manager for some of KPF's most notable and complex New York City projects. She collaborated to develop the design for One Jackson Square, a national AIA award-winning residential building situated over several active subway lines. Lauren managed 55 Hudson Yards, a large-scale, transit-oriented office building that features a unique, finely-crafted wall system. The building's irregular structure incorporates a ventilation building for the subway station below, requiring detailed coordination with the MTA and city stakeholders. Much of Lauren's work focuses on maximizing the potential of underutilized or outdated buildings through repositioning. She has contributed management expertise to adaptive reuse projects such as Hudson Commons, which adds 17 stories above a former warehouse creating state-of-the-art office space; 175 Park, a reimagining of a traditional suburban office building in New Jersey; and 660 Fifth Avenue, for which a new, custom glass curtain wall façade maximizes occupant comfort while reducing energy consumption. Lauren also plays an integral role in the operations of the firm itself overseeing recruitment, staffing, and mentorship alongside KPF's senior leadership. She holds a board seat on the Design Futures Council, and was named one of PWC's 20 Under 40 Outstanding Women in Construction. Lauren helped launch KPF's Educational Program, actively participates in the ACE mentorship program, and has taught Architect Registration Examination courses at the New York Center for Architecture. In this episode, Lauren talks about her experience of moving up through the ranks at KPF, how architecture is a group effort, and the importance of communication and collaboration. She shares some great advice on what makes someone a good leader, how to develop and hone their leadership skills, and how one can differentiate themselves at a larger, international firm. Lauren also talks about how being an athlete has informed who she is as a person and the importance of having an outlet in your life that isn't architecture related. - We want to hear from you! We all have sensitive areas in our lives, memories, and shared experiences. When these are triggered, they can ultimately cause moments of disconnection between our partners and loved ones. Maintaining healthy relationships is challenging--especially when couples get caught up in repetitive negative patterns. As we work towards developing deeper connections and living more authentic lives, these emotional raw spots get in our way. So how do we identify these emotional bruises before they leave permanent scars on our existing relationships? Join Dr. Sam Jinich and Dr. Zoya Simakhodskaya, Executive Director of the New York Center for Emotionally Focused Therapy, as they discuss how to interrupt these raw spots, break negative cycles, and build deeper, more meaningful connections. Here’s a quick glance at what you’ll learn from Sam and Zoya during this episode:-How to react when you feel like your partner doesn’t understand or is not being sensitive to your feelings. -How to identify sensitivities or emotional raw spots, which may have been formed earlier in childhood or by previous relationships. -The importance of sharing our raw spots with our partners and loved ones, so that we can work together to avoid or be more gentle with those emotional bruises. -Feeling safe, loved, and accepted in our relationships, instead of unsafe, undervalued, and unloved. -Finding empathy for ourselves and others. "We all have [raw spots]. You have them. I have them. Every single listener has them. And they usually are things that we had experienced, most likely growing up, but it can also happen later on in life." --Dr. Zoya Simakhodskaya"If we want to change the way that our raw spots are pressed from others, by others, we need to understand also our role and our part in having those raw spots pressed." --Dr. Sam Jinich

56: Sacred Stress. A conversation with George Faller. George is an outstanding person to connect with during this virus crisis because while when it comes to whether or not the virus is here, we do not have any choice in the matter. However, we can choose how to respond to the chaos and sense of disconnection that it brings. George's role with the New York City Fire Department positioned him as a first responder to the Twin Towers on 9/11/2001. In the aftermath of this trauma, through education, training, and personal exploration, he began to understand his mission and purpose to be supporting others through crisis and trauma. Currently, as a marriage and family therapist, speaker, and writer, George works to bring his message to others. The most simplified form of this message is that we usually find the sacred within the stressful. But first, we need to find out which kind of stress we are talking about in the first place. In this conversation, George and I explore the two different kinds of stress - distress and eustress- the value within the function of the various ways in which we approach stress both approach and withdrawal, the hidden costs of our attempts to protect and defend ourselves, misconceptions surrounding our interpretation of stress, the influence between our individual perceptions of stress and the physiological consequences to that stress, the science behind coming together for support even when the larger part of our defenses are oriented to retreat, post-traumatic growth and the meaning that often accompanies the most devastating moments of our lives. Bio: Prior to a career in the field of mental health, George spent 20 years as a NYC Firefighter and NYC Police Officer. George received his M.S. in Marriage and Family Therapy from Iona College, where he graduated at the top of his class. He holds a B.A. in Political Science from Queens College. His experience as a FDNY Peer Counselor, particularly following the events of 9/11, sparked his passion to help those impacted by trauma. He is a certified Trainer/Supervisor/Therapist in Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) and founder of the New York Center for Emotionally Focused Therapy where he serves as President. He is a Supervisor with the American Association for Marriage & Family Therapy (AAMFT) and teaches classes at the Ackerman Institute for the Family in Manhattan. He is a Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist currently practicing in Connecticut and New York. George is the director of training at the Greenwich Center for Hope & Renewal in Connecticut and is on the Board of the Porter Cason Institute at Tulane University in New Orleans. George brings a unique and varied experience to his practice. Whether he is providing marriage therapy to Wall Street executives, leading a conference for the United States Military or equipping therapists from around the globe, his ability to inspire is far-reaching. George is also committed to bringing EFT to underprivileged populations and pushing the leading edge of effective therapy. https://www.georgefaller.com https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/foreplay-radio-couples-and-sex-therapy/id1083324677 Band of the Week: Keanu Leaves https://www.facebook.com/Keanuleavesband/ Music Page: https://music.apple.com/us/album/antigravity-machine-single/1475012751 Theme music provided by: http://www.modernnationsmusic.com Brought to you by: https://www.thecenterforhas.com Website for The Sacred Speaks: http://www.thesacredspeaks.com Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thesacredspeaks/ @thesacredspeaks Twitter: https://twitter.com/thesacredspeaks Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thesacredspeaks/
On today's episode I sit down with Dr. Audrey Freshman to discuss the dangers of vaping and addiction in adolescences. Dr. Freshman is the Chief Executive and Clinical Director of the New York Center for Living. Her life work has included a blend of psychiatric knowledge first gleaned at NYS Psychiatric Institute, followed by decades of practice in the field of substance use disorder. Most notably, Dr. Freshman served as Associate Director at a major Long-Island based non-profit NYS OASAS program targeting adolescents and young adults where she helped to create and oversee a school/family/community-based model of treatment. Dr. Freshman has published and presented extensively on the subject of adolescent addiction and has conducted research on the intergenerational transmission of PTSD as a risk factor for substance use disorder.
My first guest today is Gabriela Friedman. Originally from Brazil, @gabriela_friedman has taken some pretty bold steps in her life to bring her to where she is today, a Mom, a personal trainer, and a nutritionist based in the Hudson Valley. From her own journey Gabriela discovered how a lifestyle built around healthy living and physical fitness could empower, build confidence and discipline, and add overall happiness to one's life. Her ultimate goal is to support and motivate her clients to develop habits to live a healthy lifestyle through proper nutrition and exercise. She shares about her childhood and how she came to the US in a rather unplanned way, about starting a formal path in nutrition following up on the seed that was planted by her mother early on and how she works to educate her children about how to eat to support good health. Gabriela's philosophy is largely moderation. It's not about restricting, but rather eating with color (not food coloring!) and vibrancy. Being active and healthy is part of Gabriela's everyday life. My favorite advice from her is "it's not about what you eat between Thanksgiving and New Year's that matters, it's what you eat from New Year's to Thanksgiving!"Here are the two food and eating resources I mentioned, but there are so many more! A fascinating approach to mindful eating Ram Dass, Jack Kornfield and Joseph Goldstein and Christy Harrison, Food Psych podcast.Today's second guest is Lyndsey Harrington. Hailing from Santa Barbara by way of Melbourne, Australia, Lyndsey has been dedicated to Nonviolent Communication since she first encountered it in 2012. Growing up with a deep love for meditation and alternative healing, she found herself yearning for a practice that could bridge the sense of loving unity she felt with the world during her meditations and maintaining that sense of connection in her everyday human life. For her, Nonviolent Communication is that bridge. She shares how in 2012, while living in Brooklyn, Lyndsey encountered Marshall Rosenberg's book “Nonviolent Communication” at the request of a co-living space and all who occupied it together. She was so impressed with how she observed her flat mates communicating and relating to one another that she dove in deeper. In 2015, she began studying with the New York Center for Nonviolent Communication and then, in 2017, joined their team as a workshop facilitator/trainer. She has facilitated several NYCNVC intensives, supported the organization as a course coordinator, and has led and co-led NVC practice groups in Brooklyn and the Hudson Valley where she now resides.Lyndsey shares a bit about NVC walking us through some of the main concepts about using feelings language, slowing down, taking time to have a conversation with curiosity, rather than a confrontation, all which leads to more harmony and a meeting of everyone's needs. It's largely a practice in rewiring the brain from habitual responses and re-educating how we're trained about our own needs and the needs of others. We all really want the same things so remember that when you're sitting at the dinner table with your beloved family members. There's so much practical information in our conversation, so tune in for some tips on how to move through a situation that may be triggering using principals of NVC. Welcome to the LI Law Podcast. We feature legal issues and developments which affect Long Island residents and business owners. The podcast focuses on Long Island law topics and includes greater New York court and legislative happenings. If you are one of the approximate 8 million residents of Long Island (Nassau, Suffolk, Queens, and Kings counties), or want to enjoy all law-related matters on Long Island, this podcast is for you! Your host, Zehava Schechter, is an attorney admitted to the New York Bar for 30 years. She concentrates her private practice in estate planning, administration, and litigation; real estate law; contracts, and business formation and dissolution. If you like this podcast, you may want to look for Zehava's monthly articles in the Malverne/West Hempstead Herald and the Beacon newspaper. Our guest on this 17th episode is Elan E. Weinreb, Esq., a creative and insightful civil litigator, mediator, and arbitrator who has represented domestic and international clients as both plaintiffs and defendants in state and federal court cases involving diverse and complex fields of law and has extensive experience in the use of technology in litigation. He has also served as a third-party neutral in mediations and both individually and as a panelist in arbitrations. A magna cum laude and Order of the Coif 2002 graduate of the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law, from 2000 through 2002, Mr. Weinreb served on the Cardozo Law Review, where he developed an interest in the use of computer technology in litigation and published a student Note on the use of computer animations and simulations in the courtroom. He then joined Kaye Scholer LLP, a prestigious midtown Manhattan law firm, which merged with Arnold & Porter several years ago to become Arnold & Porter Kaye Scholer, LLP, and had the honor and privilege of representing many clients in multimillion-dollar commercial and product liability litigations. Seeking more control and responsibility over his own cases, in June 2009, Mr. Weinreb joined Katlowitz & Associates as Senior Associate and Head of Litigation, and in July 2012, he was promoted to Counsel. At the start of 2014, Mr. Weinreb left Katlowitz & Associates to pursue his life-long dream of establishing The Weinreb Law Firm, PLLC ("TWLF"), a solo civil dispute resolution practice located out of Garden City on Long Island. From 2015 through 2016, he successfully completed comprehensive training in commercial arbitration offered by the New York State Bar Association ("NYSBA"), mediation training offered by the New York Center for Interpersonal Development, and advanced NYSBA commercial mediation training. In April 2019, he served as a faculty member in the same advanced NYSBA commercial mediation training that he attended as a student three years before and simultaneously became a Part 146 New York County Supreme Court Commercial Division mediator. Most recently, in September 2019, he was appointed co-Chair of the New York County Lawyers Association's Alternative Dispute Resolution Committee. What I’m feeling is indescribable. I just met the most remarkable woman that saved the lives of 148 people, on April 17, 2018. Southwest Airlines Captain, Tammie Jo Shults one of the first Naval female aviators of the F/A18 was incredible. We developed an immediate connection and even listened to snippets of my podcast The Traffic Pattern. In November of last year I sat down with air traffic controller Cory Davids from New York Center which assisted Southwest flight 1380. Season 1 Episode 3. SWA1380 suffered a catastrophic engine failure mid flight and miraculously landed in Philadelphia. Today, Tammie and I discussed the events of April 17th and her latest book, Nerves of Steel: How I Followed My Dreams, Earned My Wings, and Faced My Greatest Challenge. It is currently available for pre-order on Amazon. Huge thanks to Tammie Jo, and W Publishing Group! Thank you to so many for the words of encouragement and genuine support.© 2019 All Rights ReservedNerves of Steel is the captivating true story of Tammie Jo Shults’s remarkable life—from growing up the daughter of a humble rancher, to breaking through gender barriers as one of the Navy’s first female F/A-18 Hornet pilots, to safely landing the severely crippled Southwest Airlines Flight 1380 and helping save the lives of 148 people.

Dr. Charles Glassman explains overcoming Brain Drain and other obstacles to leading a meaningful life. “It’s so convincing, the physiological feeling that we have when we’re anxious: our stomachs feel tight, we might have to go to the bathroom, we might feel jittery, we might have brain fog, we might not feel on top of our game or strong. And those are very convincing feelings to tell us we have to fight or flee.” - Charles Glassman, MD In this episode of The Tightrope with Dan Smolen podcast, guest Charles Glassman, MD returns to discuss Brain Drain, his study of how discordant emotions negatively impact our physical health. While board certified to practice internal medicine, Dr. Glassman treats his patients holistically by addressing their physical, emotional, and spiritual health. And while listening carefully to his patients, he has determined that we often try unsuccessfully to treat our physical illness through too much self-medication and prescription drugs, overreliance on specialists, and—most of all—not mitigating our mental and emotional pain. Dr. Glassman believes that, by controlling Brain Drain, we may all lead healthier and more productive lives. Overcoming Brain Drain and other obstacles is key to leading a meaningful life. In these key interview segments, Dr. Glassman: Describes the meaning behind “Brain Drain” and the ill effects that it has on mind, body, and spirit [starts at 1:33] Details how self-medication and over-medication can make our physical ills worse [starts at 9:00] Offers his professional opinion on cannabis as an effective alternative to opioid pain treatments [starts at 16:34] Delves into our emotional responses and the destructive power of holding grudges [starts at 18:28] Lays out steps one can take to find profound meaning and “daily magic” [starts at 23:16] Offers wisdom that he has received from his patients and how he applies it in his own life [starts at 28:03] About our guest: From the time of his youth, Charles Glassman discovered that close friends sought, and appreciated, his advice. As a board-certified internal medicine doctor, and now as a well-recognized author and thought-leader, he finds his greatest purpose in empowering thousands of people around the globe to seek better health outcomes and more meaningful lives. In 2002, he stopped accepting the health insurance payments that most doctors still take in favor of a “concierge” system in which patients pay his practice an annual fee. The result? His patients now get ample time with him and find the interactions more useful and enjoyable. What is more, Dr. Glassman gets beyond treating their illnesses to help them achieve a lifetime of wellness. Part of his value proposition to patients is the advice that he offers in his blog. A patient once described Dr. Glassman’s wisdom as that offered by a coach, thus, Dr. Glassman became Coach MD. In 2009, and based partly on his newsletter and blog writings, Dr. Glassman published his first book, Brain Drain: The Breakthrough that will Change Your Life. In 2018, he published an e-book to help readers thrive through our discordant times: Fake News Stories by Your Brain. Charles Glassman received a Bachelor of Science degree from Hobart and William Smith Colleges and his M.D. from New York Medical College. His medical practice, the New York Center for Longevity and Wellness, is based in Pamona, New York. In order to make progress, both partner must be able to give up their stance in this situation. Michael Luckman is director of the New York Center for Extraterrestrial Research and founder of the Cosmic Majority, an organization that seeks to advance the views of the majority of people living on planet Earth who believe in UFOs, life on other planets throughout the Universe, the paranormal, the New Age and the sanctity of the environment. From Elvis to the Beatles, from Michael Jackson to Marilyn Manson, rock stars claim to have seen, communed with, been inspired by, and sometimes even descended from extraterrestrials. Alien Rock by Michael Luckman is an irreverent, illuminating, all-access pass to the stars' unearthly encounters--some friendly, some frightening, and some frankly bizarre, including: • The birth of Elvis was marked by the appearance ofa mysterious blue light over his house. • In August 1974, John Lennon spied a UFO from the window of the penthouse he shared with then-girlfriend, May Pang. • Mick Jagger and Marianne Faithfull encountered a luminous cigar-shaped mothership while camping in the English countryside in 1968. • Jimi Hendrix told a friend, "I am a spiritual messenger, sent here from another place." Whether you're a UFO skeptic or a true believer, Alien Rock provides a fascinating new perspective on the long, strange trip that is rock 'n' roll history, and suggests that, wherever the road takes us, we may not be traveling alone.
