On this week's My Week In Cars podcast join our hosts Matt Prior and Steve Cropley as they talk about how much Steve liked the new Renault 5, a compact retro EV city car that also has a sporty hot hatch variant from Alpine, the A290. Cropley talks Pat Symonds, the engineer who'll be instrumental to Cadillac's upcoming new Formula 1 entry, while Prior explains why he's more enthusiastic than some about the forthcoming Honda Prelude which has an engine and yet still a fake gearbox with it. Welcome back to Flat Chat! And it's another late one thanks to various movements of people. And in the case of Codders and Autosport Grand Prix Editor Alex Kalinauckas coming back from Mexico, movements of people in the wrong direction at the wrong time… of course, Mark Gallagher joins as well! The latest edition of GP Racing magazine hit the newsstands just before the US Grand Prix as we look at who's going to be top dog at Ferrari next year, as Mark and Alex ponder what the Vettel-esque mistakes Lewis Hamilton shouldn't make as he prepares to battle Charles Leclerc for supremacy at Maranello. Elsewhere, Pat Symonds is featured as he talks about why multiple teams are struggling to add performance as the season goes on, and why McLaren has waited so long to use its latest floor upgrade. And of course, there has to be a discussion on driving standards after Max Verstappen doubled down on his aggressive defending against Lando Norris, and received 20 seconds of time penalties during the Mexico Grand Prix. How will they be adjusted ahead of the Qatar Grand Prix, and is the FIA being consistent enough with its stewarding? He's a World Championship-winning engineer with nearly 50 years in Formula 1, but Pat Symonds' focus is new innovation and F1's next generation. Pat scored title wins with Michael Schumacher in the 90s and Fernando Alonso in the 2000s. In the 80s, he helped a rookie Ayrton Senna get up to speed and take a stunning Monaco podium. Today, as Formula 1's Chief Technical Officer, his task is producing spectacular racing - now and for years to come. Pat tells Tom Clarkson about his past successes, his memories of working with great drivers and his future projects, including the sustainable fuel which will power a new breed of F1 car from 2026. Unconventional and controversial, in the 1990s the Benetton Formula 1 team rose through the ranks to challenge the big names of Williams, Ferrari and McLaren. After black flags, disqualifications, a pitlane inferno and political manoeuvring, the tumultuous 1994 season ended with Michael Schumacher sealing the World Championship title for Benetton, after a controversial clash with Damon Hill in the season finale in Australia. Our speaker is Damien Smith, former editor of MotorSport magazine and author of the new and authoritative history of this most colourful of Formula 1 teams. Damien is joined by senior Benetton engineer Pat Symonds and other former team personnel.

On this month's Flat Chat podcast we discuss the major changes happening within Mercedes. At the beginning of this season, Toto Wolff claimed that Mercedes' basic car concept was a dead end and that a major rethink was needed. Our tech columnist Pat Symonds explains what this means for the team. He breaks down "car concept" and the challenges faced when attempting an engineering U-turn in the fast-paced world of Formula 1. Hosts Stuart Codling, Mark Gallagher and Matt Kew also discuss the rising fortunes of Aston Martin. The team has been surrounded by innuendo regarding whether their cars are simply copies of other successful designs, particularly Red Bull. This month, Matt Kew takes aim at this popular narrative and sheds light on the reality of the situation, revealing that not everything is as it appears to be. Lastly, we look forward to the Azerbaijan Grand Prix this weekend. For the first time, Baku will host a sprint race with a separate qualifying session replacing the normal Saturday morning practice. The race start order will be governed by a traditional qualifying session, which moves to Friday afternoon. The new Saturday morning session dictates the Sprint line-up, with the Sprint itself no longer having any bearing on Sunday. But is this a good move for Formula 1 given the high chance of damage at Baku. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Extreme weather is nothing new to Formula 1. But it seems more recently, it is becoming an issue for the cars. Seven sessions up to the 2022 mid-season break required wet or intermediate tyres: the events in Imola, Monaco, Montreal and Budapest. Since then, add Singapore and Suzuka. We hear a lot about how rain levels the performance, how it throws the form book out of the window, how it shakes up the grid. According to F1 legend Pat Symonds, the opposite is the case. We're going to look at two things today. Firstly, Pat's argument that Formula 1's recent adventures in the rain show that far from levelling the performance, it's the best who do better. And then we'll look at specifically this generation of cars and wet weather tyres. Today we ask: · Do downpours really level the playing field? · Why do the best teams and drivers always rise to the top? · And why we can't think of the rain as having an equal effect on machine vs driver. Let's get up to speed with GP Racing magazine editor Stuart Codling.
Wow, we're now comfortably in the midfield of the F1 grid! On today's episode, Lily and Michael dive into the confusing, inconsistent, and sometimes scandal-ridden history of Alpine, otherwise known until rather recently as Renault. You'll get to hear all about a second -gate called Crashgate and meet two very intriguing (and different!) drivers in the legendary Fernando Alonso and the scrappy Esteban Ocon. --Production Note -- This episode was recorded prior to the August 1, 2022 news that Fernando Alonso is moving to the Aston Martin team for the 2023 season. Everything in the episode is still pretty relevant and super fun, but we'll talk more about that announcement when we discuss Aston Martin in a few weeks! For F1's Chief Technical Officer - Pat Symonds - and his team, it's been a turbulent time. With F1 making its most far-reaching rule changes, the cars for 2022 required radical re-designed. In this episode of „#drivedigitalsuccess“, Pat explains the changes made, the challenges faced and how all of this will impact this season of F1. Topics 1. Why did F1 decide to change up the rules this year? 2. What changes have been made to this year's F1 cars? 3. Who gave input on the changes for car design? 4. How will the design changes impact the racing experience?
Welcome to Episode 41 of the Lovecars On The Grid podcast! Tiff Needell and Paul Woodman are here with another episode, with a motorsport roundup of events from the past week! It's been Christmas week, so very quiet from a motorsport front, but still lots to talk about from the FIA with Formula 1 and other sports, too. The FIA seems to be going through an interesting period, after Frenchman, Jean Todt moved on from being in charge of the FIA for 12 years, bringing in Mohammed Ben Sulayem as the new FIA President. Then of course we had the controversy between Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen in the last race of the season at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Furthermore, both Ross Braun and Pat Symonds are leaving Formula 1, who were two figures behind the new, 2022 car. In addition to this, Belgian FIA Rally Director, Yves Matton also quits! What also doesn't help, is that a petition has been launched on Twitter to get Michael Masi out of the FIA, following his decisions at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Should he stay? What do you think? To make matters even worse, Nicolas Latifi, who was the driver that crashed, causing the safety car at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, has been receiving death threats for what happened to Lewis Hamilton following the incident! Of course, Latifi didn't intend to crash! Paul then gives us some stats on Formula 1 for our Christmas Quiz! Comparing Max Verstappen beating Lewis Hamilton to Fernando Alonso beating Michael Schumacher in 2005. Did you also know that Nikita Mazepin received 234 blue flags in the 2021 season! World Rally Championship is back on 23rd January, with French Rally driver Sebastian Loeb driving for Ford in the new Puma rally cars. The cars this season will be hybrid for the first time, too, which will make for an interesting season for WRC with 100HP boosts from the hybrid system. In the British Touring Cars Championship, NAPA Auto Parts are using BTCC as a launch platform for their business in the UK market, which will give BTCC a real boost, allowing drivers to be paid to be full time BTCC drivers, as opposed to drivers using their own sponsors. As January approaches, we of course look forward to the Dakar rally, that starts on 1st January. With nearly 500 different vehicles taking part, from buggies, motorbikes, trucks and cars, with just 1000 people taking part and just 10 British people taking part! That's it for our podcasts for this year! Thank you to everyone who has supported us and may we wish you a very Happy New Year!

Fernando Alonso is back! Well, almost. In 2021 the Spaniard will return to the F1 grid with Renault, the team with which he won two world titles in 2005 and 2006. On this week’s show, the man who engineered him to those championships – Formula 1’s current Chief Technical Officer Pat Symonds – gives us the inside line on all things Alonso. With fantastic anecdotes, Symonds discusses what made Alonso such a great racer in the past, his areas of weakness, the things he’ll have learnt away from F1, and just why he thinks the 32-time Grand Prix winner will succeed again.
See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
We’re hopeful that the plague has finally run it’s course through our household - if nothing else we both sound better than we did last week.Could their be a Saudi Arabian Grand Prix - honestly we don’t care, but if there is the track would have been designed by Alex Wurz which we do think is pretty cool.Max Verstappen will likely be a Red Bull driver for another 3 years.Willams continues to invest in developing talent name Roy Nissany as a test driver and giving him outings in FP1 this year as well as expanding W Series Champion Jamie Chadwick’s simulator program.Charles Leclerc’s younger brother Arthur is now a member of Ferrari’s young driver development program. If Sergio Perez is challenging for wins in two years - he’s going to leave F1, he says…Sean Bratches is officially out at F1.Jean Todt shows that he’s completely out of touch.Pirelli believes that teams will continue to have problems with tires this year.Launch dates have been confirmed for McLaren, Ferrari, Renault, Mercedes and Alpha Tauri.Renault says that the 2021 rules will determine if they stay in the series.Pat Symonds admits that the 2019 aero rules were a mistake. And - Carlos Sainz won the Dakar rally for the third time - no, not McLaren’s Carlos Sainz Jr - but Carlos Sainz Sr.
Formula 1's next engine formula could be a hybrid two-stroke powered by eco fuels. Yes, when Pat Symonds expressed what the future could be like, we shook our heads in disbelief, too. Isn't two-stroke technology archaic in the world of automobiles? If Formula 1 goes down this road, it will be a perception vs. technology battle on all quarters. But before all else, will the existing (and new, if they're coming) power unit manufacturers agree to such a formula? After all, someone's got to build those power units. Also in this episode of the Inside Line F1 Podcast (http://bit.ly/ilf1ponkf1b) , we discuss some of the many outrageous pieces of news and stories in this winter season. Are certain elements deliberately making statements to keep our attention in the off-season? We're deliberating releasing an episode every week to keep you entertained, that's for sure. :D Tune in! (Season 2020, Episode 02) 0:00-3:00 - Should Formula 1 switch to a hybrid two-stroke eco-fuel formula from 2025? It's perception vs. technology! 03:00-06:00 - The key questions for the hybrid two-stroke eco-fuel formula: 1) how much horsepower? 2) how efficient? 3) can they actually use alternative fuels? 6:00-9:00 - Porsche built a hybrid-turbo Formula 1 engine only to scrap it all and join the all-electric Formula E series. Will the hybrid two-stroke formula attract power unit manufacturers at all? 9:00-12:00 - Charles Leclerc's sky-diving badassery. But do you know what did Leclerc flaunt after signing his five-year extension with Ferrari? 12:00-15:00 - Any driver in the world of Motorsport of the same breed as Fernando Alonso? Lewis Hamilton to join Keanu Reeves in the remake of The Matrix? 15:00-18:00 - Alexander Albon's reverse psychological tricks on Helmut Marko; he's actually trolling Marko in case a demotion to Toro Rosso comes his way in 2020. Come to think of it, Albon's true rival is Marko and not Max Verstappen! End - Alternate career for Cyril Abiteboul - a politician? Ahead of the Dewar Trophy and Simms Medal presentations the podcast team sat down with Williams' chief technical officer Pat Symonds to discuss the winners of the two awards as well as Formula 1's 2017 regulations. We also cover the greatest racing driver excuse of all time, courtesy of Ayrton Senna, and Pat's time at Benetton. It's the eighth time Pat has graced the microphone on this site and his ability to distill technical discussions into something even I can understand remains undimmed. Enjoy. Before we can even talk about F1 - we've got to talk about a hometown team that we have some interest in. We're not Cavaliers fans, and certainly not Browns fans - but the Cleveland Indians are 2 games away from the World Series and we're rooting for them... Former Porsche LMP-1 driver and number 2 F1 driver (kidding!) Mark Webber has announced his retirement from auto racing at the end of the WEC season... While we think it's unlikely to happen - NBCSN should take notice that there's yet another experienced F1 expert who would make a brilliant addition to their broadcast team. Ferrari's ex-engineer says that the team is in turmoil. Pat Symonds calls Williams' development efforts this year "remarkably stagnant." Mercedes is loosing a lot of money, but not as much as we first thought and Silly Season is finally getting interesting.

Podcast with Pat SymondsPat Symonds – Williams’ chief technical officer – stopped by for a podcast last week to talk about all things Formula 1, including the Grove squad’s return to the podium. Along with the Mercedes duel and the emergence of Daniel Ricciardo, Williams’ success has been one of the biggest stories this year, so who better to talk us through the season? This is Pat’s fourth time behind the Motor Sport mic and F1 has changed so much since his first appearance in 2010. Will Mercedes still be on top the next time he comes in? Or will Renault and... This month, the team – with a slight change of line-up – sat down for a chat with Pat Symonds. Pat's returning to the F1 pitlane with Marussia this year, a place he hasn't seen since 2009. After the pre-season tests, he was primed to give his opinion on which teams could impress at the start of the season... and which may not. He also talks about 2014's regulation shake-up and the differences between working in the modern age and his early days with Toleman. Joining Rob and Nigel for the first time is Motor Sport veteran Simon Arron. Or, as Rob calls him, 'The Encyclopaedia'. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Welcome everyone to our first podcast of 2012. Pat Symonds is the only podcast guest we've had more than once, and when you listen you'll realise why. He's a straight-talking F1 engineer who not only tells it how it is, but also has the ability to explain even the most technical parts of the sport to people who haven't got an engineering degree (i.e. us). We hope you enjoy it and do let us know your thoughts on everything we talk about. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Despite freezing cold weather and a tube strike, Pat Symonds made it to our Chelsea offices and spent a very interesting hour with us. Thankfully Pat is one of the few engineers in Formula 1 that can explain the staggering amount of technology in Formula 1 in layman's terms and what he has to say about KERS, the new rules and Red Bull this year was fascinating. Not to mention what he had to say about Fernando Alonso, Michael Schumacher, Ayrton Senna and Jean Alesi. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
