Samuel L. Jackson grew up around discrimination. A native of Tennessee during the Jim Crowe era, he had experienced racism his entire life. He even attended segregated schools. So when the Civil Rights Movement hit in the 1960s, he knew he had to do his part. While attending Morehouse College in Atlanta, he decided to indulge in his favorite childhood past time... going to the movies. During a screening of John Goldfarb, Please Come Home, a distraught man ran in and announced that Martin Luther King had been murdered. The theatre clearing out, he returned to the Morehouse campus to find many of his friends and classmates were burning down the neighborhood. Just four days after MLK's assassination in Memphis, he flew back to his home state to participate in the garbage workers strike that King had been leading up until his death. He then flew back to Atlanta to participate as an usher in his funeral. At 70 years old Sam Jackson is one of the most prolific actors in Hollywood. While going through his filmography for research, we didn't realize just how many iconic flicks he's done. The guy's had memorable bit roles such as Senior Love Daddy in Do The Right Thing, Stacks Edwards in Goodfellas, and the chain-smoking Mr. Arnold in Jurassic Park... You also can't forget career-defining roles as Nick Fury in the MCU or Jules Whinfield in Pulp Fiction, for which he received an Oscar nomination... There's no doubt that Sam has contributed to some of the defining movies of the last thirty years. But as it goes with most actors, his early life was actually quite troubled. A youth that involved a serious speech impediment as well as drug addiction.

ABC’s American Idol winner in 2019, Laine Hardy released his take on the Christmas classic, “Please Come Home for Christmas” in September. Dennis connects via Zoom with Sean Dwyer, an L.A.-based writer-producer whose Christmas-themed movie Holiday Rush is currently streaming on Netflix. The film is about a successful New York radio personality and father of four who, just a few years after the death of his beloved wife, abruptly loses his job and has to reimagine his whole life. Sean talks about the origins of the story, shooting a holiday movie in the spring, casting Romany Malco from A Million Little Things as the lead...and scoring singer Darlene Love for the role of the grandmother--and getting her to record a new version of her seasonal classic "Christmas (Baby, Please Come Home)." Sean also talks about his previous Netflix film Walk, Ride, Rodeo, about a real-life Utah teenager who resumed competitive rodeo months after a paralyzing spinal cord injury...and he recalls his first job in show business, as a driver for legendary TV producer Norman Lear. He also talks about Half Husband, a short film he shot during COVID about a gay man and a straight woman who decide to get married and build a life together. Other topics include: his daily writing process, staying creative during the pandemic, his dream to make a musical and where Norman Lear's enchanting hats.

JIMMIE VAUGHAN has dedicated his life to making sure the blues not only stays alive, but remains full of life and an inspiration to all who listen. For the past 50-something years, music has been the guiding light for Vaughan. He started playing young, and when the blues of Freddie King and Frankie Lee Sims crawled deep inside his young soul, it would stay there forever. After worldwide success with the Fabulous Thunderbirds during the ’80s, it came time to leave that band and build his own path in exploring different approaches to the blues.’Baby, Please Come Home’, is a rolling and righteous celebration of everything the blues can be. WoodSongs Kid: Jack Triebold is an 18-year-old guitar player from Charleston, South Carolina.

Until the great Rock ’n’ Roll Hall of Famer Charles Brown opened our eyes and ears to the concept, most of us never thought of Christmas as a time for the blues. But then in 1961, King Records released “Charles Brown Sings Christmas Songs” and suddenly Christmas was cool. The standout track on that album was Brown’s composition called, “Please Come Home for Christmas,” a song that has hit the chart dozens of times since that original release. The Eagles, for example, had a beloved version in the 1970s, Bon Jovi would revisit the tune in the 1990s. Meanwhile, in this century it’s been given fine treatments everyone from Willie Nelson and Martina McBride to Kelly Clarkson. And now we in The Flood will be incorporating the number into our house band tunes at this weekend’s Route 60 Saturday Night holiday show. Here we are working on our arrangement at last night’s rehearsal. That’s Paul Martin singing lead and Michelle Lewis with her call-and-response harmony.
It’s the holiday season and so we’re ranking Christmas music. Amanda Dobbins, Kate Halliwell, and Andrew Gruttadaro each give their top five favorite Christmas songs (1:00). They talk about favorites like “Please Come Home for Christmas” (8:44), “All I Want for Christmas Is You” (17:32), and “The Nutcracker Suite” (24:42). Hosts: Amanda Dobbins, Kate Halliwell, and Andrew Gruttadaro

Jimmie Vaughan started playing blues guitar when he was a kid and now, more than 5 decades later, he just never stopped. Growing up in Dallas in the 50 and 60s, Jimmie and his little brother, Stevie Ray used to spend their time listening to music and figuring out how to play it on guitar.By the time Jimmie was about 15, he’d already been getting paid to play in a band 6 nights a week and decided to strike out on his own, eventually landing in Austin, where he’d end up playing with legends like BB King, Eric Clapton and nearly every other blues legend, and eventually earn his own place a legendary blues player.Along the way, his brother, Stevie Ray Vaughan would join him in Austin, carving his own iconic status in the world of blues. Tragically, Stevie lost his life in a helicopter crash, leaving Jimmie in what he calls his dark years, trying to carry on with music and life. He eventually emerged and has been a guiding light in the world of Blues for more than 50 years now. His new album, BABY, PLEASE COME HOME (https://www.jimmievaughan.com/), is a rolling and righteous celebration of everything the blues can be.And, as with all of our very special music episodes this month, at the end, Jimmie plays a bit of guitar for us. This one was really special for me, because Jimmie didn’t have his guitar with him in the studio, but he gave me the great honor of playing the acoustic guitar I’d built with my own hands almost a year-to-the-day earlier. Jimmie is currently touring (https://www.jimmievaughan.com/jimmie-vaughan-tour-dates), so be sure to catch him on the road!***Check out our offerings & partners: What if you could discover your "Life’s Work DNA?" Technically, John Williams' follow-up to "None But the Brave" is a war film, as it deals with the U.S.-Soviet animosities during the Cold War, but it really is nothing more than pure slapstick comedy that stoops low but still strives to aim high. "John Goldfarb Please Come Home" takes the real-life incident of Francis Gary Powers crashing his U2 plane and makes lowbrow comedy out of it. What results is a low point in Shirley MacLaine's movie career, but a great effort by John Williams in his 10th film. The music in this film relies heavily on arranging the orchestra to create a Middle Eastern flavor, with some 60s punk sprinkled on top. Williams uses many musical styles throughout the film, from a quiet love theme to Keystone Kops-style antics. A major milestone of the film concerns the title song, which marks the first song co-written by Williams to appear in a theatrical film. Host Jeff Commings analyzes Williams' contributions to the film, and the court battle that nearly derailed the film's release.

Paul Nelson is a Grammy-winning American guitarist, performer, record producer, and songwriter. Who has worked with everyone from Eric Clapton to members of the Allman Brothers Band and the list goes on. Nelson was not only the hand picked guitarist to legendary rock/blues icon Johnny Winter but is recognized in his own right as one of today's top guitarists. "Johnny definitely took me under his wing," Nelson remembers his late friend and mentor. "The blues world does that. One musician hands you the torch, and then you try to run with it. Johnny took pride in turning me on to the likes of Robert Johnson, T-Bone Walker, Muddy Waters Delta, Texas and Chicago blues – all the music that he loved. I knew what he was doing for me, and I am really appreciative for that." Staying at #1 on the "Hot New Releases" charts for months Nelson's latest project "Badass Generation" on Sony Records still maintains his unmistakable connection to the Blues, but it also finds the guitarist showing his many other musical dimentions fans have come expect considering him one of music's most respected and influential contemporary artists. On this album Nelson and his newly formed band skillfully incorporate an array of sounds and styles, with what Nelson's fans know to be his calling card: remarkable, world-class virtuosity on the guitar - what you might expect of someone who was also taught by six-string master Steve Vai. "This project has so much input from all of the different styles of music that have influenced me and my band, from blues to classic rock to jam band, pop rock and more. I wanted to play the guitar to serve the songs – and not the other way around. Everything I create has to fit in with the music," says Nelson. Track List: 1. Down Home Boogie 2. Episode 23 – King’s X Part 4, Tape Head & Please Come Home… Mr. Bulbous A lean Palaver continue on with the King’s X catalog with the Tape Head and the very surprising Please Come Home… Mr. Bulbous. Continuing with the ongoing theme, the idea of better alternatives for a single are explored. The big surprise of the episode was the discovery of much to like on Mr. Bulbous. The group, as a whole, are surprised and delighted to find that Mr. Bulbous is an engaging, entertaining and, dare we say, progressive album that cements King’s X’s place as a progressive metal band. Brooklyn based quartet Sō Percussion (Eric Beach, Josh Quillen, Adam Sliwinski, and Jason Treuting) collaborate with composer Dan Trueman on their newest album, neither Anvil nor Pulley. They experiment with different ways of creating sound, using a turntable, a laptop and various gadgets like a video game controller. The result is a piece in five acts, composed with, rather than for the quartet. We have Eric from Sō Percussion and Dan in the studio to talk about their project and some quirky details of the album.
