Although tech platform companies often claim in their advertisements and public relations efforts that they represent the public interest, as private companies, their primary goal is to maximize their own profits. Equating private interests with public interests not only overlooks the issues arising from the increasingly blurred lines between the two but also worsens the damage that conflicts of interest can cause to sustainable public systems. In this episode of the Nine Finger Chronicles podcast, host Dan Johnson interviews Jon Teater from Whitetail Landscapes about habitat management for hunting properties. They discuss the importance of understanding the complex environment that deer live in and how it affects their behavior. Teater explains that the most common goal for clients is to shoot bigger quality deer, but this goal can be abstract and requires a deep understanding of the deer composition and the specific makeup of a high-quality deer. They also discuss the role of risk and pressure in deer behavior and how to create a habitat that reduces risk and holds deer on the property. Teater emphasizes the importance of good habitat and cover, as well as the balance between food availability and cover value. He also explains how to assess the carrying capacity of a property by measuring the amount of biomass consumed by deer. Jon and Dan discuss the importance of habitat improvement and deer management. They cover topics such as diverse diets for deer, equating the number of deer to be removed from a property, and the impact of deer behavior on habitat management. They also discuss the role of aesthetics in deer management and the need for a holistic approach to habitat improvement. Jon emphasizes the importance of pushing oneself to experience difficulty and learn from different environments. He also provides insights on how to choose a habitat consultant and the key factors to consider. Takeaways: Understanding the complex environment that deer live in is crucial for effective habitat management on hunting properties. The most common goal for clients is to shoot bigger quality deer, but this goal requires a deep understanding of the specific makeup of a high-quality deer. Creating a habitat that reduces risk and holds deer on the property is key to successful hunting. Balancing food availability and cover value is important for attracting and holding deer on a property. Assessing the carrying capacity of a property can be done by measuring the amount of biomass consumed by deer. Equating the number of deer to be removed from a property requires considering recruitment, residential and non-residential deer, and the availability of food. Understanding deer behavior and individual preferences can help in making management decisions. Aesthetics and creating a good environment for deer are important aspects of habitat management. Pushing oneself to experience difficulty and learn from different environments can lead to better habitat management practices. When choosing a habitat consultant, consider their experience in your region, their ability to provide ongoing support, and their approach to habitat management. Consultants should consider the specific goals and challenges of the property and provide tailored recommendations. In this Mental Health Month episode of 'Creating the Vision', I welcome guest Mitzi Ocasio, founder of Let's Think LLC and a children's book author, to share her insights on mental health, the importance of controlling overthinking, and leveraging personal stories for healing and empowerment. Mitzi discusses her journey of exploring her mental health through her podcast, 'Let's Think with Mitzi', and emphasizes the power of filtering thoughts, the impact of internal dialogue, and finding peace through spirituality. She also touches on societal pressures, the significance of self-talk, and practical strategies for improving mental health, such as the exercise of saying 'Silencio, Bruno!' to silence intrusive thoughts, inspired by the movie 'Luca'. The conversation explores themes of consistency, discipline, embracing our dark sides, and using words powerfully. Mitzi's story highlights the complexity of mental health and the continuous effort required to maintain it while encouraging listeners to discover personal methods that work for them. This insightful and incredibly touching sermon enables the listener to grasp a deeper understanding of God's voice and the rejuvenating power of His spiritual rest. Bridging on specific verses from Hebrews chapter 3, the sermon drives home the importance of tuning out distractions and focusing on the call of the Holy Spirit. At its core, the message conveys the importance of establishing a profound relationship with God, not just through prayer, but also by hearing and understanding His commands as dictated by the scriptures. With a comprehensive exploration of contemporary Christian practices, the sermon prompts essential contemplation - is our faith rooted in God's Word, or is it placed in transient and superficial ideas? The essential essence of harmonizing worship with God's Word is frequently touched on, reminding listeners that worship devoid of understanding God's Word is not in balance. In a gentle, yet profound manner, this episode scrutinizes the trending fast-paced consumption of religious information and advocates for more profound and meaningful engagement with God's teachings. The conclusion underscores that hearing God's voice not only involves speaking to Him but also includes listening and understanding His commandments and wishes. This understanding subsequently leads us to the spiritual rest that He has promised. Moreover, the speaker drew a comparison of believers' spiritual journey to the transition from consuming milk to eating solid food. Identifying the existence of 'babies' or beginners in our churches, he emphasizes the need to delve into the 'meat' of God's Word, strengthening our ability to discern right from wrong. Equating these circumstances with biblical characters who heard God's voice during their most challenging moments, we are reminded that often it's within life's storms that we begin to hear God's voice clearly. In this sermon, the speaker evocatively drives home the importance of patience in our spiritual journey. Using the charming anecdote about teaching his son to ride a bike, the speaker highlights how, similar to earthly parents, our Heavenly Father coaches us to keep on our journey of faith, despite the occasional falls along the way. This message imparts a deeper understanding of God's open-armed presence in our lives, reinforcing the importance of patiently maturing in our spiritual journey. The sermon culminates in celebrating new believers and the upcoming 50th anniversary of the church. This episode serves as a helpful, reflective, and encouraging exploration of the spiritual nourishment needed for our relationship with God, our understanding of our own faith and our ultimate commitment to earnestly seek His will.
Spur a discussion about traveling to a national park for a vacation and odds are that it will revolve around getting out into nature, looking for wildlife, perhaps honing your photography skills, or marveling at incredible vistas. Will the discussion include destinations that portray aspects of the country's history, or cultural melting pot? Equating national parks with nature is obvious, but making a similar connection with history and culture might not be so obvious. And maybe that lack of appreciation for America's culture and history explains why the National Park Service has been struggling with protecting and interpreting those aspects of the parks. The National Parks Conservation Association has just released a report calling for a Cultural Resource Challenge, one that asks for a hefty investment by Congress in the Park Service's cultural affairs wing. We explore that report in today's episode with Alan Spears, NPCA's senior director for cultural affairs.

In today's episode, we're exploring why, despite its transformative potential, we often find ourselves running from mindfulness. It's like we're scared to get still and truly let mindfulness happen because who knows what we might discover about ourselves? We're taking a moment to go back to the March 2023 episode, "Come Home to Yourself," where Dr. Thema Bryant shared something so honest and radical with me that it completely opened my eyes. Once again, reading the fathers on humility is humbling. Gradually our eyes are opened to the nature and reality of virtue; not as human reason or understanding grasp, but as it has been revealed to us in Christ and through the gift of His Spirit. This stands forth most of all in thinking about humility among the virtues. It is not self hatred. It is not self contempt. It is living in He who is Truth. For this reason, both the Evergetinos and St. John Climacus describe humility as the “door to the kingdom” and to participation in the very glory of God. It is also for this reason that we discover that just as the proud feel satisfaction with honors so those who are humble of mind are especially thankful for the attacks and scorn which befall them in this world. Such things free us from illusion; not only the illusions we have about ourselves but also the illusions that others often form about us. To be thought of as virtuous and holy, when in reality one understands that all is Grace, can be the bitterest of things to swallow. To know oneself as loved with an everlasting love and having been shown the mercy of God makes the thought of evaluating oneself in any measure seem absurd. --- Text of chat during the group: 00:05:32 FrDavid Abernethy: page 13 Letter G - Volume 2 00:18:21 Nypaver Clan: What page? 00:42:31 Louise: The Catholic protagonist of the movie entitled ''A Hidden Life'' (2019), a true story, is a beautiful example of humility. Ever wondered why some sports teams perform far better than others, despite having similar levels of talent? One answer lies within the realm of communication, and in our latest conversation with the insightful retired NCAA coach, Pete Whitney, we shine a light on this often overlooked, yet critical aspect of team sports. Together, we explore the communication dynamic in hockey, tracing its influence from youth leagues up to the NCAA level, and discussing how it can often be the determining factor between a winning and losing team.Retired NCAA Coach Pete Whitney shines a spotlight on the multifaceted nature of communication on a hockey team. From 21-year-old freshman athletes to high school teams and younger, the necessity of creating a comfortable environment for meaningful exchanges is stressed upon. With a perfect blend of old-school values and new-age technology, we talk about how tools like group texts can foster team unity, while also emphasizing the human-driven elements of active engagement and trust-building. We also put forth some valuable perspective on coaching high school level teams - a feat that requires a deft balancing act of clear communication, expectation setting, and understanding the trials of growing athletes.Wrapping up our conversation, we cast our gaze on the younger rungs of the sports ladder, discussing strategies on how to develop effective communication skills in young athletes, all the way from U6 to U14 levels. The Modern Therapist's Survival Guide with Curt Widhalm and Katie Vernoy
Does Your Social Media Make You Look Like a Bad Therapist? Curt and Katie chat about therapists putting out advice on social media. We look at how bad this advice can be and when it can even be harmful. We talk about what makes this advice bad and what to do instead. Transcripts for this episode will be available at mtsgpodcast.com! In this podcast episode we talk about therapist influencers giving advice on social media We look at really bad relationship advice that seems to proliferate on social media by therapist influencers. Why is the advice oftentimes bad from therapists on social media? · Micro-validation of what clients are already believing about themselves or their partners · Lack of context and very specific related to your target client (but seen by all folks) · Focusing on the people around the person reading the post, rather than the reader themselves · Single posts that go viral or reach wider audiences may be misconstrued or taken out of context What is the potential for harm for the therapy profession? · Bad advice = bad therapist, which can be generalized to all therapists · Harmful advice can lead to harm in the wider population · Saying that you're speaking for all of mental health (when it is actually not grounded in the evidence base) · It is hard to distill nuanced information in very short timeframes What should therapists do to improve their social media posts? · Citing sources rather than standing out as a sole expert · Grounding self in the evidence base or recognized psychological knowledge · Talking to clients about what they can do, rather than how to judge the people around them · Designing the content to be engaging, but also tie back to longer form content that can have more nuance and context · Each post has to stand alone, with sufficient context · Identifying questions or considerations for folks to look at (versus definitive statements) What are the concerns with therapists being too limited with what they share on social media? · Not providing information that can help folks in abusive relationships · Coaches and “fake therapists” may be the only people in the space, putting out even worse advice What are the characteristics of very bad social media advice? · Rigidity in perspective · Equating hurt and abuse · Overusing pop psychology terms like “trauma bond” · Giving overarching, single tactic coping advice that can be harmful for many folks · Putting things very definitively, without nuance related Resources for Modern Therapists mentioned in this Podcast Episode: We've pulled together resources mentioned in this episode and put together some handy-dandy links. Friday, 17 March 2023 ‘After this I will return And will rebuild the tabernacle of David, which has fallen down; I will rebuild its ruins, And I will set it up; Acts 15:16 James just noted that the words of the prophets agree with the idea that God first visited to take out of nations a people for His name. With that, he now cites Amos 9:11 & 12 to confirm this. As is often the case in the New Testament, the quote is from the Greek text, not the Hebrew. Further, there is even a bit of deviation from the Greek in verse 15:16. That verse begins with, “After this I will return.” Rather, the word translated as “this” is a plural demonstrative pronoun. It reads, “After these things I will return.” The reference is to what is said in the earlier verses of Amos 9. They speak of Israel's destruction and exile. In those verses, the Lord says – “‘Are you not like the people of Ethiopia to Me, O children of Israel?' says the Lord. ‘Did I not bring up Israel from the land of Egypt, The Philistines from Caphtor, And the Syrians from Kir?'” Amos 9:7 In essence, the Lord is saying to Israel, “You are just like any other people. Other than your relationship with Me, you are just people.” To show them this, He was going to take a different direction, working among the Gentiles of whom they thought they were better. Because of their sinful state, rejecting the Lord, they would enter a time of punishment, being scattered among the nations. It is “After these things” that the Lord will return. The meaning of that is that He will revisit Israel. It is as if he had departed from them and was now returned to them. His attention was on their destruction, but it would be changed to their re-establishment and prosperity. It is at this prophesied time that it next says, “And will rebuild the tabernacle of David.” The tabernacle is a booth or temporary shelter used during the Feast of Tabernacles. This was a feast where the people gathered in Jerusalem, meeting to acknowledge that the Lord was Israel's protector. They had been brought out of Egypt, having been rescued from their bondage. They were wholly dependent on the Lord and were living in close and intimate contact with Him. The “tabernacle of David” is specifically speaking of the royal house of David. Despite being the king, he too would have participated in the annual festival, dwelling in a tabernacle in this intimate fellowship with the Lord. What is being conveyed is that the rule and authority of Israel under the House of David would be restored to Israel, but it would be in a way that resembled the tabernacle, or booth. Thus, it refers to the Person of Jesus, the Messiah who is the Greater David. For example, the verb form of the word is used when speaking of Christ in John 1 – “And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.” John 1:14 The noun form is used when referring to the intimate dwelling together of God and man in Revelation 21 – “And I heard a loud voice from heaven saying, ‘Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people. God Himself will be with them and be their God.'” Revelation 21:3 It is the intimate fellowship between the House of David and the Lord that would be rebuilt. Understanding this, the next words read, “which has fallen down.” The Davidic line of kings ceased at the time of the Babylonian exile. From that time on there was no Israelite king over David, in the sense of leading the nation. The line of kingship in the house of David was prophesied to end by Jeremiah – “‘As I live,' says the Lord, ‘though Coniah the son of Jehoiakim, king of Judah, were the signet on My right hand, yet I would pluck you off; 25 and I will give you into the hand of those who seek your life, and into the hand of those whose face you fear—the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and the hand of the Chaldeans.'” Jeremiah 22:24, 25 However, the line of David itself was not cut off. After the exile, it continued on as is testified to in Haggai – And again the word of the Lord came to Haggai on the twenty-fourth day of the month, saying, 21 “Speak to Zerubbabel, governor of Judah, saying: ‘I will shake heaven and earth. 22 I will overthrow the throne of kingdoms; I will destroy the strength of the Gentile kingdoms. I will overthrow the chariots And those who ride in them; The horses and their riders shall come down, Every one by the sword of his brother. 23 ‘In that day,' says the Lord of hosts, ‘I will take you, Zerubbabel My servant, the son of Shealtiel,' says the Lord, ‘and will make you like a signet ring; for I have chosen you,' says the Lord of hosts.” Haggai 2:20-23 The royal line was cut off in Coniah, but it was re-established after the exile to Babylon in Zerubbabel. It is Zerubbabel who is listed in Jesus' genealogy in Luke 3:27, continuing this royal line leading to Israel's Messiah. This does not mean, however, that Zerubbabel was the rebuilt tabernacle signifying the rule of the House of David. Israel had no Davidic king again. Rather, they were ruled by other nations. Even when Herod ruled over Israel this is true. He was neither of the line of David nor was he the final authority over Israel. His rule fell under the jurisdiction of Rome. With this understood, the words of the prophet being cited by James continue with, “I will rebuild its ruins.” Again, it is referring to the tabernacle of David, meaning the intimate fellowship with the Lord of the kingship of Israel over the people. The wording is speaking of a time when Davidic rule would again be realized in the land. This has never occurred since the time of Coniah whom Jeremiah referred to. Of these words, Albert Barnes rightly states, “The ruins thereof - Heb. ‘close up the breaches thereof.' That is, it would be restored to its former prosperity and magnificence; an emblem of the favor of God, and of the spiritual blessings that would in future times descend on the Jewish people.” This is what James is saying would occur. With that, the words of this verse end with, “And I will set it up.” As with the previous clause, it is still referring to the tabernacle of David. There is a time prophesied that will come when the Davidic rule will again be established over Israel. It must be remembered that the words “After these things” set the tone for what is being debated in the council. It is based on these words of the prophet now being cited by James. That is based on the words of verse 15:14 that God first visited to take out of nations a people for His name. In other words, the things being cited from Amos are not referring to the time leading up to the coming of Jesus and His spiritual rule over the church at this time, but to the second coming of Jesus and a literal rule over Israel. This is important to understand. Equating these words with the church is a completely false notion that is not supported by the words of Amos nor by the rest of Scripture. This will be seen more clearly with the evaluation of the next verse. Life application: It is true that much of the church rejects a literal re-establishment of Israel and a millennial reign of Christ. These things are spiritualized forming the doctrine of replacement theology which says the church has replaced Israel and that everything spoken of in the past was referring not to Israel's future, but to the current state of the world where Christ rules the church. This cannot be. The surrounding words of Amos do not support this, nor do the rest of the words of Moses and the prophets. Even the New Testament cannot be seen to agree with this. If God has rejected Israel as a nation, it means the words of the covenant made between the Lord and Israel cannot be trusted. If that is true, then the words of the New Covenant cannot be trusted either. The same Lord who established the Mosaic Covenant is the Lord who has established the New Covenant. Have faith that despite Israel's failings, the Lord will never reject them as His people. Likewise, despite your failings, the Lord will never reject you because of what He has done through Christ Jesus. When the terms of the covenant are met, the deal is done. If you have believed the gospel, you have been saved, once and for all time. Lord God, thank You for the lesson of Israel. Despite their continued unfaithfulness, You have remained faithful to them. We can learn from this that despite our unfaithfulness, You will always remain faithful to us. Thank You for this assurance in our hope of eternal life. Thank You! Amen.
If you're an avid listener of this podcast, you already believe that art has the ability to connect people across cultures and express things that words cannot. Today, we speak with large-scale figurative painter, Joan Cox, another one of our incredible 2022 NOT REAL ART Grant winners and a queer artist who adheres to the notion that representation in art matters.Typically, images of lesbian couples in art history have been repressed or justified as erotic material for the male gaze. Drawing on her own life with her partner of 21 years and the intimate lives of lesbian couples in her community, Joan creates highly-detailed visual narratives that champion these complex, beautiful, yet still-taboo relationships between women. By celebrating the female gaze, Joan's work opens up dialogue through a complex investigation of cultural norms, sexual identities, and body politics.Tuning in today, you'll learn more about Joan's journey as an artist and a queer person and why she believes that art that is representative of the great multitudes of human experience not only creates new mediums for understanding one another but can even facilitate difficult but necessary conversations. We also touch on the importance of creative expression, why culture is like a river, what it means to be either a switchblade or a Swiss Army Knife, and so much more, so make sure you don't miss this compelling conversation with NOT REAL ART grant winner, Joan Cox!Key Points From This Episode:Joan's response to being selected for the NOT REAL ART Grant. What 2023 holds for Joan as a fine artist and a commercial graphic designer. Some of the reasons that people resonate with Joan's work. How discourse around sexual identity has evolved in recent years. When Joan began to call herself an artist and when she came out as queer.Equating culture to a river, with some in the “main stream” and others who aren't.A look at how creative talent runs in Joan's family. Why Joan believes that there is no handbook for making a living as an artist.Switchblade or Swiss Army Knife? How you can benefit from building a diverse skillset.Ways that Joan's practice has changed since COVID and becoming a mother. How Joan selects her subjects, some of whom are total strangers. Why there's nothing wrong with putting your artwork on a mousepad! What art school taught Joan about always being an artist, no matter what she's doing. The important role of creative expression in everyone's life. For more information, please visit http://notrealart.com/joan-cox

The Modern Therapist's Survival Guide with Curt Widhalm and Katie Vernoy
Why Men Don't Stay in Therapy Curt and Katie chat about men's mental health. We look at why men typically go to therapy, their experiences while in therapy, what therapists get wrong when working with men, and how therapists better support the needs of men seeking mental health treatment. Transcripts for this episode will be available at mtsgpodcast.com! In this podcast episode we talk about men seeking therapy For Men's Health Awareness month, we want to explore men seeking mental health services. Why do men typically go to therapy? Others telling men to go to therapy Career or relationship issues Depression, which looks like irritability and hostility (externalized behaviors) What is the experience of men in therapy? “Some of this research [on men accessing mental healthcare] shows that while men are increasing in the numbers presenting for mental health treatment, they tend to drop out earlier than women and they tend to drop out at a lot faster rate than women. So that to me says that we as a field are doing something wrong, that we are not able to meet the needs of men. All of that great advice out of ‘hey, go and seek mental health treatment,' is falling on people who are trying it out and finding bad experiences with it. “– Curt Widhalm, LMFT Therapy seems to try to get men to emote like women Invalidating masculine presentations and behaviors Equating masculinity with toxic masculinity Not feeling safe to express emotions beyond confidence, neutrality, or anger How can therapists better serve men seeking therapy? Understanding and honoring a range of masculinities (even within the same client) Helping men to broaden their range of emotional expression Problem-solving, solution-focused can be helpful for men who want to have a clearly defined goal to work toward Collaboratively creating treatment goals Identity work that supports self-definition of masculinity What can therapists get wrong when working with men in therapy? “There is such a broad array of understandings at this point of what masculinity and what ‘real men do' that I think we need to be aware that whether it's traditional gender roles, or more current… there's some need for an understanding of where your client sits.” – Katie Vernoy, LMFT Framing masculinity and toxic masculinity solely as “bad” Not digging more deeply into individual development around masculinity Taking offense at their client's gender identity or ignoring their own bias around “traditional gender roles” How therapists characterize men's presenting problems (assigning blame, like depression being seen as anger or hostility, men being described as violent rather than traumatized) Our Generous Sponsor for this episode of the Modern Therapist's Survival Guide: Thrizer Thrizer is a new modern billing platform for therapists that was built on the belief that therapy should be accessible AND clinicians should earn what they are worth. Cathy Rowland is a Women's vitality coach with 29 years of interior design expertise.Almost everybody all over the world would associate health and wellness with the proper diet, exercise, and sleep, among others. Equating it with the space and interior design of homes as well as offices is almost unheard of. Being a women's vitality coach, in addition to prioritizing self-care as well as self-awareness, space design is the special ingredient she offers her clients. Designing Space for Wellness is the course she created for this.Highlights: Self-care should be at top of our priorities because we can't fill an empty cup Debunk Limiting beliefs such as metabolism gets slower as we grow older but that doesn't mean we cannot make better choices Ketosis - through intermittent fasting, the body resets and burns fats instead of retaining itFirst steps to wellness - cut out sugar and sugary drinks, and processed foods; increase sleeping hours; track your steps in 21 days The most taken-for-granted aspect of wellness - making our home and office space our own oasis or haven Less is more - declutter, get rid of, and discard the things you do not need or like and give them away to others who need them and might find joy in using themWomen's instincts make them natural nurturers. They plan out keeping up with everybody's needs and forget about themselves. With a long to-do list, they usually come in last or never at all. This and the vicious cycle of self-neglect among women is what Cathy stands up to stop. She emphasizes that wellness does not only come from what we consume but also from the environment that we see and the space we move about. "One of the greatest tragedies of our time is this impression that has been created that science and religion have to be at war." - Francis Collins According to some, neutrality is a myth; either you're for the "team" or you're against it. Polarization has become increasingly prevalent, and it could be logical to infer that almost anything can, and will, at some point, become polarized. Polarization and tribalism seem to be a tendency of human nature, especially as social media stokes the figurative fires of culture. Unfortunately, this results in polarizing forms of thought not designed for logical consistency. This brings us to everyone's favorite topic: religion. Bias aside, religion is a form of explaining something in a way that we deem more effective than any alternative. The same can be said for the sciences. Equating the sciences in their purest form, to religions in their purest form, whatever that may mean to you, can be a false comparison. Science is a systematic enterprise that builds and organizes knowledge in the form of testable explanations and predictions about the universe. Religion is a social-cultural system of designated behaviors and practices, morals, beliefs, worldviews, and more, that generally relates humanity to the supernatural, transcendental, and spiritual elements. To many, they're not designed to be the same, nor are they supposed to be collaborative, but why? Is it out of the question to analyze whether they've merged? Can the two coexist harmoniously, or do we have an inability to separate our bias from either? Can one's religion be another's science and vice versa? Join the Wolf, Bull, and Baewolf in episode 65 as we discuss the merit of whether the Sciences, and religion(s) have become tainted by human nature through dogmatic ideology, and intentionally divisive views. The point of this episode is not to champion one over the other, but to merely observe that the human mind tends to accept whichever school that it prescribes, as universally true. We think that's a problem, and surely, is anything but scientific or religious. Tune in every week for new episodes! If you'd like to support our podcast directly, you can do so here. It started with an idea of changing the way we support people in the medical pipeline. [16:28] How our upbringing affects us Where we grow up, what house we live in, what our parents do, how our parents think, what they are exposed to and what they expose us to contribute significantly to whatever challenges we're about to face. To Dr. Dickson's family, education was everything but only few people are in the medical field. So, it was up to Dr. Dickson to figure out how he would go about organic chemistry. In short, he has always lived with “there's got to be a way, I just do not know what it is yet”. This ended up in him partnering with his mentor to start Ascension Medical Doctors. [34:29] Who does Ascension Medical Educators help? Medical students are in battle and they see their comrades slowly lose the battle. We've all heard the statement: "we launched without spending on marketing!". And yet you have plenty of marketing activities - just no paid advertising. Marketers equating marketing with advertising media spend is unnerving. But where does it come from, and how can we put an end to this?
Suppressed feelings are the main factor that prevent us from moving forward into greater fulfillment. What is a suppressed feeling? How do suppressed feelings become projected? Feelings are where the power is; thoughts have little power. Releasing suppressed feelings is the main focus in Humanistic (pre-CBT) psychology. As an elementary teacher, elementary principal, and as a Superintendent, EdLeader podcast host Dr. Rob Jackson has watched the battle lines drawn and the theories, best practices, and curriculum shaming hurled back and forth in the "Reading Wars." Equating a war with the debate over the best way to teach children to read seems a bit excessive, but a quick glance over the blogs spewing nastiness about the thought-leaders on each side of the debate seems to give rise and credence to the name, "Reading Wars."On one side is whole-language or balanced literacy, an offshoot of whole language. On the other side is the Science of Reading.So...There is a Reading War that has been going on for a really long time and the Science of Reading has taken the upper hand. But, what is the Science of Reading and what do EdLeaders need to know? Join Dr. Rob Jackson as he crosses the battlefield of the reading wars to share just what you need to know, whether you have a background in teaching children to read or not.www.drrobjackson.com@Dr_Rob_Jackson

"1. It Objectifies Women The idea that women attain control by eliciting men's desires plays into the age-old notion that women's worth lies in their ability to produce erections. “One of the greatest powers a woman has is the power of her sex,” author and speaker Rick Johnson writes in Patheos. By making looks paramount to women's empowerment, this attitude reduces them to objects. And by telling women to gain power through their sexuality, rather than their personalities or talents, it teaches them to focus on their looks. Equating all situations where women are the objects of desire with empowerment has the effect of justifying objectification. “A young woman's sexual power is effective with both sexes… Advertisers know that and use partially clad images of young women to sell products to both men and women,” Johnson writes. This statement ignores all the ways women are disempowered by advertisements that use their bodies to sell products, depicting them in passive poses and even presenting them as inanimate objects. There is nothing empowering about dehumanization. Furthermore, telling women their value lies in their ability to be desirable devalues women who are not widely considered sexually desirable. “Women tend to lose their sexual power as they age,” Johnson admits. If women's ability to get what they want is rooted in their demand among men, what about women who aren't in high demand? It's true that people often favor women based on their adherence to ageist, racist, sizeist, and ableist ideals. But that should be challenged, not celebrated. Placing value on women based on men's attraction makes those who don't possess the traits society considers attractive feel worthless, and it makes women of all appearances feel like objects. We should be prizing inner qualities more important than the ability to provide or withhold sexual pleasure, like strength and wisdom. And people should honor women's wants and needs regardless of what they look like or whether sex will ever be offered in exchange." --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/antonio-myers4/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/antonio-myers4/support
We all have heard the childhood rhyme, “Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me.” It seemed true as children, but in reality words really can hurt and cause a lot of damage. Within the Church we can often refer to those who have left as wayward, lost sheep, or apostate. Coach Jennifer Barnhart has many members of her family who have stepped away from the Church and she finds that when we use this language we drive a bigger wedge between ourselves and those who have left. Equating one's worth and value through our descriptions of them can be very hurtful. There is a lot of improvement we as members can do to show love and support to those who have left through the language we use in describing them. Jennifer is a beautiful example of this. If you have someone in your life who has left the Church this is a great episode to listen to so that you can be more loving in your language not only around them but also about them. Most of us have experienced some form of trauma in our lifetime, which can be a one-time event such as a car accident, or repeated trauma that occurs for months or years. However for many, trauma is deeply rooted in childhood events. While throughout life we become physically and psychologically vulnerable, those who have experienced trauma can equate being emotionally vulnerable as a threat to our safety and security. Holding tightly onto control, the fear of emotional exposure brings up feelings that we may not be willing to face. In this week's Omar Pinto Coaching Podcast, the group helped Sara. She found herself falling off of her recovery routine due to the pandemic and life events. Overwhelmed by things she can't control, she doesn't let those get overly close to her. Equating vulnerability to a decrease in safety, she feels it's easier to handle everything on her own. [0:26] Sarah on her recent predicaments and how having a plan of action is helping her move forward. [4:32] She explains her physical and emotional relationship with her family. [12:46] Sarah on her need to do everything and have things done her way. [29:40] The trauma she experienced as a teenager, which led her to heavy drinking and eventual alcoholism at 15 years. [34:16] How lack of trust and self-worth can make you feel unsafe in who you are and how others perceive you. [39:52] How isolation leads to loneliness, which later turns into self-hatred. [45:56] Why she needs to be vulnerable to feel safe again, trust, and let her guards down. [52:38] Tori and Leo share the lessons they've learned from Sarah's coaching session.
