Raphael Colantonio and Peter Salnikov discuss the conclusions of 2024, the state of the industry, and the systems that should change for games to develop further. Have a nice one! Bite the bullet and wait for your turn: announcing a game 20 years ago vs now.  This is gonna suck, and by the end you probably wouldn't want it anymore. Why are most of us in the same situation? Games as another form of ‘content' for the Internet. Good or bad? The GOTY talk, Why we loved STALKER 2. How people review games these days, and why the Metacritic ecosystem encourages devs to make safe & boring games. Shoehorn inclusivity and checkbox development. Why Gamepass is a danger. Subscription sickness.   This and many more in the concluding episode of The House of The Dev podcast for Season Two. Hope to see you soon!

In today's Daily Fix: Insomniac's Wolverine game has lost its Creative Director, Brian Horton, as he moves from the upcoming Marvel game to take charge of Microsoft's Perfect Dark. Not much is known of the Wolverine game, aside from a teaser several years ago. The Perfect Dark reboot was announced back in 2020, but has languished in development hell until a new gameplay teaser was revealed earlier this year. Horton's previous credits include directing 2015's Rise of the Tomb Raider, and a short stint at Infinity Ward. In other news, Arkane Austin co-founder has some harsh words for Microsoft. Raphael Colantonio, now head of WolfEye Studios, was asked by PC Gamer what his thoughts were of Arkane Austin's closure. Colantonio called the move 'stupid' and the decision was likely to appease investors and stockholders. And finally, more than 50 million mods have been downloaded by Baldur's Gate 3 players. The game has been out for more than a year, but mod support wasn't added until Patch 7 on September 5th of this year. One of the more popular mods? A mod that changes undead character Withers to 'Bone Daddy.'

In servitude to a higher power and with a mysterious brand to show for it, Ben and Tao dominate multiple characters (and creatures), fill their posse, and ride hard all over the weird west in Wild West twin stick shooter, action RPG, supernatural spin-off: Weird West. And that infantile summary is in no way representative of the content herein. Tumbleweed tumbles. Dust billows. High noon rings out from a nearby bell tower. “There ain't enough room in this personality for the both of us!” calls a voice, and Ben and Tao face off, eyes narrowed, hands hovering at gun belts, ready to quickdraw. They discuss in-game reputation; aim and controller systems; the role of incentives in gaming; loot, upgrades and skill trees in RPGs in general and if isometric RPGs face a unique difficulty in world building; independent journalism and the role of critics in general. Plus, Tao reveals a personal connection to the devs. Sorta. The Tangent - 121: A King Named DJA Up first this week is Justin. He's got a game we discussed before, Abzu. He played and beat it, and he really did enjoy it. Then, get this, Justin has a puzzle board game that's free on iOS called, Windin. Can't beat that. Plus, Uncharted 4, Breath of the Wild, and Overwatch (Woo!). Next up, Gary. Lawbreakers, the BETA. It's more polished since PAX and the first BETA. There's a few new characters too. Arrives in August for $40. Nice. There's also Devil Daggers. A Steam game he played that cost $.99. An arena shooter where you are surrounded by darkness. Aren't we all, though? Gary calls it a POS, I say MASTERPIECE. Who knows? I don't. Finally, Brian, and it's OXEN-FREE (Olly olly). It's got some Secret of Monkey Island in it. Not too bad.
