Many of us think of spending as something you just... do. You make money, and spend it. But in fact, spending isn't something that just happens. It's a skill. It's a practice that you can refine over time and use as a tool to make your life as beauitful and valuable as it can be. One of the most important components of learning the skill of spending is aligning your spending with your values and highest priorities - something refered to as values based spending. It's entirely possible to be financially responsible, hit all your financial goals, and to buy what you love without going broke.   On this week's episode of The Money Love Podcast I'm talking with my friend and the Co-Host of The Frugal Friends podcast, Jen Smith. Jen and I discuss why it's imperitive to think of spending as a skill, why frugality isn't something to resist but rather embrace, how our desires and problems are manufactured by modern day marketing, and why quality over quantity with your spending is the secret to financial success. Lisa is the CEO of SMITH Co., a sales consulting firm focused on modern midsize B2B businesses. She understands her client's challenges because she's been there as a “COVIDpreneur”. Despite the turbulent economic landscape, she reached six figures in her first year of business. What problem do you solve?  Businesses often want to off set sales and she will help with the question of when to hire outside sales and what to pay them. Show Notes: The right time to think about adding a sales person is when things slow down, when you just can't keep up or when your referrals dry up. You need to know what your sales cycle looks like. You need to arm them with as much information and processes as possible. What is your Unique Selling Proposition. You do not want to hire someone without the tools. Else, you are hiring them to create the process and organization for you. Be sure you are doing the things necessary to keep your current customers happy. 80% of revenue with B2Bs is from their current customer base. The lowest price is not the best. You have to create value for your customer. 5 Simple steps to reframe your sales. Look at your data to be proactive. Team – look at who is involved. You may have too many or you may have too few. Automation is important but don't rely too heavily on it. Follow up is crucial. You can do this without sounding aggressive by taking the right tone. Understand your messaging. Remember sales is about psychology and story telling. Introverts make great salespeople because they have learned to be good listeners and know how to ask great questions. However, you will need to provide them with time to recharge. Lisa J. Smith's Best Small Business Tip: You wear a lot of hats as a business owner. It's important to start removing those hats and delegating so that you can work ON your business instead of IN your business. Connect with Lisa J. Join me on the Fast Track to Grant Writer: www.teresahuff.com/vip The collective values and priorities of a society change with each generation. We express our values with our time and money, so those values then drive the economy through the demand for relevant products and services. With each economic shift, the value proposition and marketing methods adapt to the current priorities to provide the most perceived value. As a nonprofit, you want to be on the peak of the value curve. During our discussion, Mark provided a journey of economic shifts through the history of America to help us understand where we are today and how nonprofits can take advantage of the current transformational economy to engage supporters. Join us for a journey through history to discover how you can help your nonprofit grow using assets you already have on hand. What is the Transformational Economy? Civilizations start as tribes in the subsistence economy, where we get enough to meet our needs and live. The goal is to say, “I'm alive.” As tribes settle, we move to the commodity economy where we harvest commodities such as crops, wood, and mining to buy and trade. The goal is to say, “I'm productive.” As the value of commodities increases, people move into the product economy where we buy labor savings. So instead of making your own products, we buy products someone else made. The goal is to say, “I'm efficient.” In the United States, we shifted to the product economy during the Industrial Revolution. As the need for products is met, we shift to the service economy where we free up time by paying for services we previously did on our own.  Then we moved to the experience economy, where people wanted more than a service—they wanted a memorable service. Now, we are living in a transformational economy, where people want more than interesting memories. They want authentic, meaningful experiences to make things better, whether it's improving themselves, their workplace, their family, their community, or the world.  This is what people are craving and paying for today, so rapidly growing companies are providing an opportunity for their customers to be better people through their products and services. How the Transformational Economy Can Help a Nonprofit The marketing efforts of nonprofits have operated on a service economy mindset, where we focus our recruitment messaging on the services we provide. But since we are in the business of transformation, it should feel natural to embrace the shift and showcase how a contributor makes the world a better place by supporting our cause. However, amid this shift, nonprofit organizations face a larger struggle to be heard through the noise with minimal marketing dollars. So how does a nonprofit get and sustain supporters' attention long enough to appeal to their sense of purpose? The Power of Story to Embrace the Transformational Economy The most powerful and entertaining way to showcase transformation is through storytelling.  Mark explained, “You can't sell transformation with features, advantages, and benefits. A person will not understand until they have been through the experience. How we do that is by telling a story of somebody who has been through the transformation. You have to tell it as a hero's journey.” To read today's full episode: What is a Transformational Economy, and How Can it Help a Nonprofit?   Challenge Question: What is a recent initiative you can search for stories of transformation?  “As human beings our identity is made up of all the people that lived before us. The ability to have continued conversations with people either living or not in an interactive platform, is a blessing, “ Says my next guest Heather Smith.  She drives a deeper connection with family, business, and people through conversational video services. Heather Smith is an experiential exhibit designer who has exhibited in Los Angeles, Cuba, and The United Nations. Heather was the concept creator and producer of New Dimensions in Testimony, the technology behind future generations being able to have a conversation with a Holocaust survivor. Heather now serves as the CVO of StoryFile, an interactive Conversational Video AI Platform that uses advanced natural language processing and artificial intelligence to make video interaction feel just like a real conversation. StoryFile's technology will allow people to have conversations with video, removing the boundaries of time and space, so that we can experience all kinds of conversations and learn from individuals whenever and wherever we want. At the heart of Heather's work is the underlying need to share, preserve and learn from the human experience. Heather's work has been featured on NBC's The Today Show, The New Yorker, The BBC and on 60 Minutes.Heather had always intended to use the interactive concept she had created to preserve the stories of humanity for future generations.  In 2017, she launched StoryFile to create a cloud-based, no-code, automatic platform that would bring the power of conversational video into everyone's hands.StoryFile is revolutionizing the way we connect with each other by introducing conversational video with Audio Visual technology at the forefront of this generation.
