In this episode, Jethro talks with James Anderson, who has been on the show three previous times: The Learner Agency Model with James Anderson Transformative Principal 351Learnership with James Anderson Transformative Principal 455 Learnership: The Skill of Learning with James Anderson Transformative Principal 570 In this episode, we talk about teaching cultures and learning cultures, take a sidewalk into some deep thoughts about moral development, and finish with a bang. Do you have a sense of power and that you get to choose what you do in your life?Agency makes you the master of your circumstances, not the victim. Voice and Choice lip servicePower to choose vs. permission to choose. Agency is an outcome, not a pedagogy. There are some things we don't have agency - the student needs to change and be capable over something that they weren't capable of it before. Learning culture vs. teaching culture. Default ways we go about learning - teaching and performing. Learning is not the product of teaching, but the product of the activity of learners - John HoltTeacher doing all the heavy lifting in the classroom. Kids were coming to school to watch her work. Kids had been learning, but hadn't yet become learners. Diagnostic tool to determine the level of learnership. Where kids are at in their own learning. Clear snapshot of where learners are at. Hidden Potential by Adam GrantTwo sides of the same coin. Character development or learnership are two sides of the same coin. Where habits of mind fit in the bigger picture. Teaching content, thinking models, within the context of good moral dimensions. How developing disposition is vital and important. Teachers are too busy “saving kids” from the challenges they are facing. Helping kids become creatures of discomfort. Help kids be safe while climbing, not taking away the opportunity to climb. Torvill and Dean - figure skating. So much more fun. If the results aren't there, the teachers get the blame. It's not up to me, it's up to the learners. We've each got a role to play. Eduardo Briceño Performance ParadoxLearnship matrix shows them what it looks like. Expertise has a rich language to describe their area of expertise. Rich language of teaching, but impoverished language of learning. Teachers are expert teachers, but they are not expert learners. People become adequate and then they stop growing. Stop growing, start performing. Teachers may not have needed to be effective learners for a long time. Creatures of discomfort. About James Anderson James Anderson is a prominent Australian-based international speaker, author, and educator deeply committed to enhancing our capacity for effective learning. Central to his philosophy is the "Mindset Continuum," an extension of Carol Dweck's groundbreaking work on Growth Mindsets, providing practical tools to cultivate a profound understanding of ourselves as learners. His notable concept of Learnership, raising the status of learning from an act to an art, offers a powerful framework to comprehend and enhance our engagement in the learning process, ultimately helping schools to create the paradigm shift that is needed. With a rich background as a teacher and school leader, James has spent the past two decades collaborating with schools to create more thoughtful learning environments. He challenges educators to critically reflect on their own Mindsets and how these beliefs are subtly communicated to students, offering tangible strategies beyond clichés to instigate genuine shifts in learners' mindsets.James places immense value on the relationships he establishes with the schools and teachers he engages with, providing sustained support and follow-through often absent in professional development. Demonstrating the impact of his approach, a three-year partnership with Asquith Girls High School in Sydney led to students displaying increased persistence, embracing challenges, and teachers setting higher expectations. This comprehensive program was acknowledged as a finalist in the 2022 Australian Education Awards. As a Certified Speaking Professional and Certified Virtual Presenter, James frequently presents at global conferences, in both physical and virtual formats. His work has gained recognition in prominent publications like The Age and Sydney Morning Herald, as well as in popular educational and parenting podcasts such as Dr. Justin Coulson's Happy Families, Jethro Jones' Transformative Principal, and Renee Jain's Confident Child Summit.James's diverse body of work includes previous publications like Succeeding with Habits of Mind, The Agile Learner, and The Learning Landscape, alongside various e-books and teaching resources. His latest book, Learnership, raising the status of learning from an act to an art in your school, is set to become the book that every teacher will be talking about. Additionally, he offers online courses like the Growth Mindset Master Class and Learnership - the skill of Learning, which support educators globally. He holds a consulting role with Art Costa and Bena Kallick's Institute for Habits of Mind and is affiliated with the Habits of Mind Profile Tool. His extensive contributions have significantly impacted the field of education, propelling the art of learning and shaping more adept and empowered learners. Carron Montgomery is a Licensed Professional Counselor, Registered Play Therapist and Level II trainer in EMDR. She utilizes a client centered approach that includes the importance of collaborating with each client's team of professional and primary caregivers. Carron is passionate about serving youth. She believes that building connections starts with being present. Nine years ago, Carron and two other women started a private practice with the hope to build connections in their community. Their practice, Aster Counseling, specializes in treating anxiety, depression, OCD, trauma, and grief and loss. At the beginning of her career, she worked for two nonprofits; the first specializing in sexual abuse and the second working with low-income families and trauma. She currently treats ages four and up and often utilizes family therapy and parental support sessions. Carron is also a presenter for churches, schools and various organizations. She began presenting at the beginning of the pandemic, as she saw a huge need that was not being addressed. She trains local school counselors and recently began writing to provide additional resources to the community. Memorable Quotes: “Life doesn't count for much unless you're willing to do your small part to leave our children – all of our children – a better world. Even if it's difficult. Even if the work seems great. Even if we don't get very far in our lifetime.” - Barack Obama “Be the calm.” - Dr. Michelle Robin  “Hearts that beat to the tune of kindness can change the rhythm of the world.”  - CJ Peterson “As children develop their brains, they mirror their parents' brains, in other words the parents' growth and development, or lack of those, impacts the child's brain. As parent's become more aware and emotionally healthy their children reap the rewards and move towards health as well, or they don't.” - Daniel J. Siegel What You'll Learn: The most important way a parent can support and build connections with their child. This Episode Includes: The mental health crisis and loneliness among our youth. Kids are lonely even when they are with other people because the emotional current of the world is being felt. Co-regulators and the need to start teaching parents and adults how to calm themselves in order to be a presence for an upset child. To become a co-regulator you need to “catch the calm.” Tone and rhythm are more important than the words themselves. Catch the calm. Bring the calm. Be the calm. Patients need to have a connection with their therapist and if they don't it's okay to find another one. People can develop healthier connections by learning how the brain works. Connections allow kids to develop “post traumatic wisdom,” which is their ability to grow or to be stunted. Our thoughts equal who we are and our thoughts equal the data we collect. When we are alone and isolated the only data we are collecting is coming from social media and media outlets. The misconception society tells about independence and success is that you can do it all alone, that you don't need connections. Kids feel like they are not supposed to ask for help. It's important for adults to help them see that they CAN ask for help. Happiness is a feeling that can come and go, it's not a destination. Use the pandemic to challenge the way you go through life - look for ways to build more connections with others. In order to heal yourself, you have to heal your heart. Three Takeaways From Today's Episode: Use the pandemic to challenge yourself to think about the pace you're going. Ask yourself if it matches your core values or is it because it's what the world is telling you? Use the pandemic to develop post-traumatic wisdom. Teachers need to make themselves open and approachable, making a connection possible, and normalizing the idea of asking for help. Parents need to put their phone in another room for ten minutes and give their children undivided attention to show them what it's like to be in a real relationship and help them figure out who they are, not who you want them to be. With one in five children being diagnosed with anxiety even before the pandemic, Dr. Shefali says it’s about time we revolutionize the way anxiety is viewed: as a superpower rather than a setback. That’s why she wrote her new book Superpowered: Transform Anxiety Into Courage, Confidence, and Resilience. Plus, Dr. Shefali’s top tips for managing your children’s anxiety – and your own – during the pandemic: “Stop having high expectations of your kids. You're not going to do it perfectly. You're going to put on weight. You're going to eat terribly. You're going to forget to exercise. This is normal. And this is not the time to put extra pressure on yourself.”   You can follow Dr. Shefali on Instagram @doctorshefali, on Twitter @DrShefali, or on Facebook at @DrShefaliTsabary.     Interested in learning more about Dr. Shefali? In the last few years, I’ve spent some time reflecting on how best to encourage and motivate my students to continue learning on their own. I started thinking about how I give praise and offer words of encouragement."Is there a way to do this that promotes learning?” I wondered to myself. "How can we use our words to foster the development of intrinsic motivation and a positive self-image in those we teach?"Praise is a powerful tool and one that we as educators can use to equip and empower those we teach. We can use praise to inspire creativity, cultivate the pursuit of excellence, and celebrate milestones. And we can use it to motivate learners to keep moving forward and keep exploring.Learning is a lifelong process, after all.I did a little research on this topic and today, I want to share a few simple ways we can offer praise with intention — those meaningful words that inspire, encourage, and motivate others — and 12 practical phrases you can use in your teaching and tailor to your students. For show notes, click here.Related resources:Please note: some of these links are affiliate links, which means if you decide to purchase through any of them, I will earn a small commission. Renee Jain is back for another episode! With so many parents finding themselves homeschooling, we thought we should offer some practical tips to help parents through this challenging transition and help you (and your kids) stay sane!  [02:50] Cut yourself some slack. It's not realistic to think you'll be a homeschooling pro in a couple of weeks.  [03:05] Kids go through a "de-schooling" process; expect it to be rocky. [05:41] Be realistic about the amount of time it takes to figure out a flow that works for your family. [07:33] Some routine and rhythm is helpful. Try focusing on 3 "big rocks" [12:11] What is our role in all of this? [13:37] The highest priority is to preserve an energy for connection and family joy. [15:31] Trying to recreate a school experience at home is a complete waste of energy and causes disconnection between us and our children. [17:31] Let's not put academic pressure on our children during this time. They'll be able to make up for whatever was "lost". [19:15] So what should they be doing? Play.  [19:56] This is an opportunity to show us just how capable our children are of entertaining themselves. [22:54] Play is crucial for our children's development. [24:24] Become a play guru!  [25:59] We can have certain rules around a few things, but for the most part, let your children be. [27:43] We can help our children get into a state of "flow" in their play (which I call free play). [29:44] When you're in "flow", you're not directed or rewarded by someone else. The activity is the reward. [30:03] Don't interrupt their flow! Let them be. [31:54] This also teaches them responsibility for using their time well. [33:36] Experiment with strewing!  [35:52] Boredom is a choice. If they're bored, put it back on them. Help them in age appropriate ways, but let them figure it out.  [37:22] There's a difference between encouraging independent play and being disconnected. [38:00] Give your full attention during care-giving activities, but otherwise, give them some space. [41:14] Homeschooling doesn't require you to be constantly present all day long. [45:50] Thinking you have to entertain your children all day long will lead to resentment.  [46:39] Hold the boundary and they'll adjust and get over it. [48:22] Set limits to protect the relationship. [49:33] How to stay organized when strewing. [50:26] Don't take it personally if they aren't into a strew idea. Some will land, and some will not. It’ll take a little time to “de-school” and figure out a new normal. Focus on helping your children play and get into “flow” and don’t worry about their academics. It may not happen overnight, but you’ll see change quicker than you think.   If you enjoyed this episode and it inspired you in some way, I’d love to hear about your biggest takeaway. The PurposeGirl Podcast: Empowering women to live their purpose with courage, joy, and fierce self-love.

Rates of anxiety among adolescents have been steadily growing in recent years. In the United States, 1 in 3 kids will be diagnosed with an anxiety disorder by the age of 18, and the global statistics are similar. My special guest, Renee Jain, brings together technology and child psychology as she works with children and parents to build the emotional intelligence of children, helping build their resilience, empathy, kindness, and critical thinking, so important in the face of the struggles that our children today are experiencing. There are plenty of contributing factors, from social media to our obsession with perfection to overscheduling our children to putting intense pressure on them to succeed and get into the top schools, and more. But according to Renee, all of this is leading to the suppression of and the disconnection from the inner voice of our children, which is the real root of the issue here. Only about 20% of kids who struggle with anxiety will get access to a mental health professional, but there are effective tools that these kids could learn to help them handle their anxiety. Realizing this, Renee left her tech/finance background and switched careers to support children and their mental health. She started a company that creates animated cartoons and programs, tools that are used by therapists, parents, and schools, to teach kids important life skills to improve their wellbeing. One of the principles that GoZen teaches is that we shouldn't be trying to be stress-free. Instead, we should learn to understand our stress and use it to our advantage. In fact, all emotions are OK, and they can also be advantageous and positive catalysts for change. Through GoZen, Renee teaches children how to understand and manage their emotions, and how to use them to their benefit. Renee walks us through a number of steps that are part of the GoZen process, including learning to stress better and reacquainting oneself with one's emotions and identifying where one feels emotions in one's body. The GoZen program can be used reactively with children who are already struggling and who are working with a therapist, but many schools also use it universally, with all students, in a proactive way, arming them with life skills that everyone really needs. If you'd like to learn more about Renee and GoZen follow her on Facebook (https://facebook.com/gozenonline/) and Twitter (@gozentweets), and check out her website (https://gozen.com). In today's story: The people of Solvei’s village mark the end of the growing season and the beginning of the dark time with a yearly festival. In this joyful celebration, the villagers dress as dragons that represent the things they fear. Solvei is too young to attend, but is so excited that she sneaks a peek on the night of the festival — and comes home with many different fears from the “dragons” that she saw there. Her mother explains that she has taken on “someone else’s dragon” and then helps her daughter give the fears back so she can fall peacefully asleep. *This story is the subject of our conversation with Renee Jain, founder and chief storyteller for GoZen.com, an online anxiety relief resource for children around the world. The story gives a picture of how scary images or sounds can make children fearful and anxious – and models how to release those images as well the anxiety and fear.*
