The extraterrestrial comedy podcast where we probe Scratching Fanny, the unfortunately named ghost of Cock Lane in Central London (also known as Frances Kent and Frances Lynes). Also unfortunately (and confusingly) named were Willy Kent, Fanny's ‘husband' and Richard ‘Dick' Parsons, Willy's pal. Willy and Fanny had a secret and Willy shared that secret with Dick which may not have been the best idea as Dick owed Willy money. All of this escalated as Fanny met an unfortunately premature passing but was that passing natural? Dick thought not and brought in a holy man to verify this. Willy was not happy, particularly as Fanny begun attending seances from beyond. Was Fanny using her knockers to communicate her untimely passing to the living, or was Dick stretching Fanny's truth? It's probably worth mentioning at this point that some of us got very confused during the recording of this episode. Apologies, folks. It all made sense in the end but we guess the moral of the story here is that you can have too much Dick and Willy. Alongside that chaotic mess, we discover that you can indeed trust a John. If you saw a photograph of Dick Backus and you thought - "I think I know him!" it may be because you are of a certain age when you watched daytime soaps like Ryan's Hope or went to see Eugene O'Neill's "Ah Wilderness" at the Ogunquit Playhouse, or you even went to see "Butterflies are Free" on Broadway. These are just a few of the gems that Richard Backus, born, and still living, right here in New Hampshire, has to his credit.Today, however, you are more likely to find him going door to door in his hometown of New Boston or one of the other towns in Hillsborough District 42 running for the NH Legislature. This was not how Dick saw himself spending time in his golden years, but his deep concern for the loss of community among our citizens and our elected officials has drawn him into the fray. I caught up with Dick recently over Zoom and we chatted about running for the legislature, always with the thread of rebuilding community running through the discussion and how rebuilding impacts and is impacted by so many of the challenges we face in our lives. How do we rebuild a sense of community when our commitment to public education is under fire? How do we restore community when more than 50% of our population are denied bodily autonomy? These and other issues compelled Dick to do something he never expected to do, to run for public office.

Of Denver's 56 historic districts and 352 individual landmarks, less than 3% commemorate non-white contributions to the city's history. Tonight, Denver City Council could change that. They are set to vote on the creation of a historic cultural district in La Alma Lincoln Park, which would make it the first historic district in the country to honor the Chicano movement. Sitting outside the La Alma Rec Center, City Cast Denver host Bree Davies spoke with Ean Thomas Tafoya and Cathy and Desiree Prieto, community members who have strong roots in the neighborhood. They talk about the importance of La Alma Lincoln Park as not only a place where Chicano civil rights took hold, but where community pride is housed in the structures and city blocks they've called home.  For more on the push to designate La Alma Lincoln Park a historic cultural district, here's a write-up from Historic Denver.  City Cast Denver was proud to have published one of the final interviews with former Colorado governor Dick Lamm last Monday. Art spoke to Johnathan for some time, but Johnathan ignored his commands. That's when Art tasered Johnathan twice.   Pringle was actually found to be wearing a wristband from Delta County Memorial Hospital dated the day before. But he had not sought care at MMH.   Victims said he appeared to be “out of it,” “on a power trip,” was “not making sense” and that he had demanded car keys.   On Friday Montrose Memorial Hospital Chief Marketing Officer Leann Tobin explained that after the unfortunate incident, they've done several things to help ensure the safety of patients and staff members.   Among other steps, MMH has increased staff in the admissions area. They also increased security hospital-wide.   The MPD is also meeting with staff to offer expertise.   To stay up to date on this story visit us at montrosepress.com   -   Before we go…   We'd like to take a moment to remember the life of Richard ‘Dick' Burtis.   Dick Burtis was a Montrose native.   He was born in Montrose in 1939.   Dick was a devoted husband, loving father and a proud grandfather. His passion was always his family and the Denver Broncos.    Dick proudly served in the U.S. Navy from 1963 to 1965. After the Navy, Dick worked in the automotive industry most of his life which took him from Colorado to Idaho then back to Colorado. And after he retired, he worked a number of years as a personal tax preparer.   Dick had a great sense of humor and was always ready to tell you a joke or something to make you smile. His famous talkative personality could tell everyone humorous stories “until the cows came home.” Some of Dick's favorite times were his daily walks with his dogs Allie, Casey and Kansas. Towards the end of his life, Dick was very proud to have been baptized, confirmed and having become a full member of the Catholic Church.   Thank you for taking a moment with us today to remember and celebrate Dick's life. He will be greatly missed.   -   That's all for today, thank you for listening! Stu Levitan welcomes R. Richard (Dick) Wagner for a special Pride Month encore presentation of our conversation about his award-wining We've Been Here All Along: Wisconsin's Early Gay History, from our very good friends at the Wisconsin Historical Society Press. The book covers the period from territorial days to the 1960s; Dick's companion volume, Coming Out, Moving Forward: Wisconsin's Recent Gay History brings the story up to the present day. In 1982, under Republican Governor Lee Dreyfus, Wisconsin became the first state in the country to adopt a gay rights law, making discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation illegal. In 1983, under Democratic Governor Tony Earl, Wisconsin became the first state to have a Governor's Commission on Lesbian and Gay Issues. Wisconsin is the only state to have elected three openly gay members of Congress – 2 Democrats, 1 Republican. But the dairy state has not always been so friendly to non-normative sexuality. In fact, laws against gay sex predate the state. When the Wisconsin Territory was created in 1836, territorial legislators took the law against sodomy from the Michigan Territory and increased the penalty from three years to five. In 1905, the Wisconsin Attorney General called oral sex “this unspeakable offense,” ‘the infamous crime,' degrading and disgusting.” In 1928, the Supreme Court called sodomy “repulsive and detestable,” but “too prevalent to be ignored.” In the 1940s, Wisconsin criminalized even thinking gay, passing the Sexual Psychopath Law to prosecute people whose impulsiveness of behavior rendered them sexually irresponsible – whether or not they ever acted on those supposed impulses. Even that citadel of sifting and winnowing, the University of Wisconsin, got into the gay-bashing business, investigating hundreds of gay students in the fifties and early sixties, and sending many of them for therapeutic discipline. UW business manager A.W. Peterson even took the doors off the toilet stalls in the Bascom Hall men's rooms, to stop gay assignations. It's part of our state's history that most people, straight or gay, don't know, but should. Because a community cannot fully know itself, or be fully known by others, without knowing its history. As they say, you can't know where you're going if you don't know where you've been. There is no one more qualified or appropriate to write this groundbreaking history of early gay life in Wisconsin than Dick Wagner, who is himself historic, as the first openly gay member of the Dane County Board of Supervisors. He even lives in a landmarked building on Jenifer Street which long before he came to town was a center of Madison gay life. Dick came to Madison as a graduate student in history in 1965, getting his doctorate in 1971. In 1972, Gov. Pat Lucey named him executive director of the American Revolution Bicentennial Commission. After Lucey resigned in the summer of 1977 to become Ambassador to Mexico, Dick ran the executive residence for Gov. Martin Schreiber until January 1979, when he joined the Department of Administration as a budget analyst. Dick retired from state service in 2005. In addition to serving on the Dane County Board from 1980-1994 – including four years as the first openly gay county board chair in Wisconsin – Dick's record of state and local public service is extensive. In 1983, Gov. Tony Early appointed him co-chair of the aforementioned Governor's Council on Lesbian and Gay Issues. That same year, he co-founded the New Harvest Foundation, a funding source for south central Wisconsin's LGBT communities. Dick stepped down last year as chair of the Madison Urban Design Commission, following service on the Plan Commission, Landmarks Commission, Wisconsin Arts Board, Wisconsin Humanities Council, and numerous other organizations. In recognition not just of his service but the way he served, Dick was named the first recipient of the city of Madison's Jeffrey Clay Erlanger Civility in Public Discourse Award, in 2007. And on a personal note – I had the pleasure of serving with Dick on the Dane County Board and the Plan Commission, and there is no one whose intelligence, integrity and decency I respect more. It is a pleasure to welcome to Madison BookBeat my friend, Dick Wagner.

And on a personal note – I had the pleasure of serving with Dick on the Dane County Board from 1982-1987, and there is no one whose intelligence, integrity and decency I respect more. It is a pleasure to welcome to Madison BookBeat my friend, Dick Wagner

Dick Kraske was the original overseer of two of the largest and most infamous serial killer investigations in history: In 1974, Lt. Kraske organized the 'Ted' investigation when two women disappeared from Lake Sammamish State Park, 20 minutes east of Seattle. Witnesses saw one of the women leave the park with a man, calling himself 'Ted', with his arm in a sling. A year later Ted Bundy was arrested in Salt Lake City, Utah. In 1982, now Major Kraske experienced deja vu as five Seattle area prostitutes were found dead in and around the Green River. Kraske reflects on those trying days and wonders on the still undiscovered and unidentified victims of Ted Bundy and Gary Ridgeway, the Green River Killer. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/anatomyofacoldcase/support

Mickey and Dick Flacks' new book Making History/Making Blintzes: How Two Red Diaper Babies Found Each Other and Discovered America (Rutgers UP, 2018) is a chronicle of the political and personal lives of progressive activists Richard (Dick) and Miriam (Mickey) Flacks, two of the founders of Students for a Democratic Society (SDS). As active members of the Civil Rights movement and the anti-Vietnam War movement in the 1960s, and leaders in today’s social movements, their stories are a first-hand account of progressive American activism from the 1960s to the present. Throughout this memoir, the couple demonstrates that their lifelong commitment to making history through social activism cannot be understood without returning to the deeply personal context of their family history—of growing up “Red Diaper babies” in 1950s New York City, using folk music as self-expression as adolescents in the 1960s, and of making blintzes for their own family through the 1970s and 1980s. As the children of immigrants and first generation Jews, Dick and Mickey crafted their own religious identity as secular Jews, created a critical space for American progressive activism through SDS, and ultimately, found themselves raising an “American” family.
