Independent 3DCG animator Gensho Yasuda makes his directorial debut with Make a Girl about a young inventor named Akira who - out of a cheeky suggestion to 'get a girlfriend' - decides to create a humanoid robot named No. 0 with all the physical and emotional capabilities of typical high school girls. In the 2000s & 2010s, the Terrifying Teen Girl - from Jennifer's Body's Jennifer to Mean Girls' Regina George to Thirteen's Tracy & Evie and beyond - started taking back her power in movies and tv by getting to tell her *own* story. The teen girl had become a rather terrifying force in movies and tv at the end of the 20th century – adults just couldn't understand what was going on with teens, and so this fearful, outsider perspective informed on screen portrayals. But as the 2000s and 2010s rolled around, the terrifying teen girl on screen began to enter a new, more powerful phase. These stories actually grappled with the harsh, conflicting realities that teen girls have to deal with (and many felt much more real because now they were actually written by people who had, y'know, actually experienced being a teen girl instead of just outside observers. From lack of control to oversexualization to the intricacies of war in Girl World, these teens were constantly being pushed to the edge – but they were always up for the challenge. For episode two of two of our bonus Mean Girls content, we've got Rosalind Wiseman on the show today, whose 2002 book Queen Bees and Wannabes: Helping Your Daughter Survive Cliques, Gossip, Boyfriends, and the New Realities of Girl World was the basis for Tina Fey's screenplay for the original 2004 Mean Girls film. This book—which is currently undergoing its third revision—is the go-to manual for being a teenage girl and raising a teenage girl. This isn't Rosalind's only book—she has written nine and has multiple New York Times bestsellers—but it's likely her most well-known book, and Rosalind is a subject matter expert when it comes to girls and the complex social issues they face, like cliques, gossip, bullying, self-image, social hierarchy, and (of course) boys. Mean Girls, directed by Mark Waters, is a classic teenage coming-of-age film exploring the intricacies of being an adolescent girl. Hang with your pals, the 2 Meddling Kids, as we see if it's still as educational as we remember. I get a lot of requests for different topics to cover on this show, and bullying is a theme that has come up multiple times. And understandably, since we know that children and teens with learning disabilities, ADHD, autism, are much more likely to experience bullying and social rejection. And we know that being on the receiving end of bullying can be traumatic and have long-lasting negative impacts. So I reached out to Ginger Whitson, an author, mental health professional, educator, and expert educator on bullying, crisis intervention, and child and adolescent emotional and behavioral health and invited her to join me on the show. Because the concept of bullying evokes such strong feelings and likely a lot of misunderstanding about what even qualifies as bullying, that's where I asked Ginger to start — what exactly IS bullying? And does the bullying today's kids and teens experience look and feel different from back when we were in school? I mean, with the addition of technology, it just feels like a completely different ball game. I also asked Ginger to guide us on how we should best respond if our child tells us they're being bullied, if there are ways we can “bully proof” our kids, and how we can preemptively prepare them so they feel they have a plan for dealing with negative behavior from other kids. In addition to her important work with children and her books, including Friendship & Other Weapons: Group Activities to Help Young Girls Aged 5-11 to Cope with Bullying and The 8 Keys to End Bullying Activity Program Workbook, Ginger, whose work can be found under the name Signe Whitson, is also the C.O.O. of the Life Space Crisis Intervention (LSCI) Institute, an international training program that helps adults turn problem situations into learning opportunities for young people who exhibit challenging behaviors. About Signe Whitson (Ginger) Signe Whitson (Ginger) is an author, educator, and mental health professional with 25 years of experience working with children, adolescents, and families. She is also the C.O.O. of the Life Space Crisis Intervention (LSCI) Institute, an international training program that helps adults turn problem situations into learning opportunities for young people who exhibit challenging behaviors. Things you'll learn: What bullying looks like today, taking into consideration the technology our kids use and other changes society has gone through in past decades A definition of bullying and what's at stake for a child experiencing bullying Essential strategies parents should follow if their child has been or is being bullied Characteristics or traits that make kids more likely to be bullied How to talk with kids who have a heightened sense of rejection about bullying and social rejection Ways to bully-proof our kids and resources we can share with them How we can all contribute to raising more empathetic kids Resources mentioned: Signe Whitson's website 8 Keys to End Bullying on Facebook 8 Keys to End Bullying: Strategies for Parents & Schools by Signe Whitson The 8 Keys to End Bullying Activity Book for Kids & Tweens: Worksheets, Quizzes, Games, & Skills for Putting the Keys Into Action by Signe Whitson How to Be Angry: Strategies to Help Kids Express Anger Constructively by Signe Whitson Odd Girl Out, Revised and Updated: The Hidden Culture of Aggression in Girls by Rachel Simmons Rosalind Wiseman Queen Bees and Wannabes, 3rd Edition: Helping Your Daughter Survive Cliques, Gossip, Boys, and the New Realities of Girl World by Rosalind Wiseman Dr. Robyn Silverman Explains How to Talk to Kids About Anything (Tilt Parenting podcast) Learn more about your ad choices. Consider this a Pop Literacy year-end gift: the recommendation of a deeply engrossing read for the average book fan, an extra fantastic read for writers of all mediums and genres, and a round-up of some of the finest dramas to ever unfold on the small screen. All those things come courtesy of Life's Work: A Memoir, the personal and professional autobiography – and unofficial writing how-to – from Emmy and Peabody Award-winning Deadwood creator and writer David Milch. Milch, also a former Yale professor and writer and producer of some of the most iconic episodes of seminal cop dramas like Hill Street Blues and NYPD Blues, shares delicious details behind the scenes of all his TV adventures … but is just as candid about life behind the camera, including a traumatic childhood that sparked many of his TV stories, a decades-long gambling addiction that cost him literally millions of dollars, and, finally, his current struggles with Alzheimer's, prompting fellow legendary writer Susan Orlean to share of the book, “This is David Milch's farewell, and it will rock you.” And, as always, we share what else has been topping our to-be-read piles. Did you know that the infamous math movie Mean Girls was actually inspired by Rosalind Wiseman's non-fiction book called Queen Bees and Wannabes? Today Vanessa talks to Rosalind about why we need to change the media and messaging that girls get about how it's not “cool” to be good at math. How can we teach students that they can be good at more than one thing? How can we help them embrace who they are individually in the face of the completely insane pressures of high school!?! Well, don't despair; Rosalind has a whole career's worth of inspiring answers to those questions, and provides hope that we can fix our messed up education system.About RosalindRosalind Wiseman is the founder of Cultures of Dignity, an organization that shifts the way communities think about our physical and emotional wellbeing by working in close partnership with the experts of those communities–young people, educators, policy makers, and business and political leaders. How Do I Deal With Mean Girls in the Church? Mean girls...ugh. Did you just cringe a little? I know, it doesn't take much of a reminder to drudge up "all the feels" from experiences we've all had when it comes to being treated badly by sisters in Christ But you know what? We need to talk about this and ask the hard questions like - How do I honor Jesus and acknowledge the hurt at the same time? How does God want me to forgive and what does that look like when I did not provoke the conflict? And why does God allow these things to happen in the first place? We're delving into the features and ephemera regarding TEEN LIFE in the March 1988 issue! Karen Catchpole dares to be frank on the matter of "Losing Your Virginity" (and parents/right-wing wackos were PISSED). Catherine Gysin goes undercover at the Miss South Carolina USA pageant and learns secret uses for Vaseline. The whole staff collaborates on a "How To Flirt" guide…of sorts. In the spec piece that got her the job at Sassy, Christina Kelly addresses how to handle "Talk Behind Your Back." Catherine speaks to the survivors of three young people who died by suicide. Christopher Newbound kicks off the fiction section with "My Name Is Daniel." Then it's on to the departments: On The Road to Miami; What He Said about why guys dumped their girlfriends; and a real mixed bag of Help. (What to do when Mom kisses Boyfriend is just one of many questions WE have for that possibly fake letter writer.) Stretch out on the shag rug and turn down George Michael on the radio: it's time to Listen To Sassy! Visual Aids
In this episode, Susan introduces Greg to 2004's Mean Girls: the teen comedy based on Rosalind Wiseman's parenting book, "Queen Bees and Wannabes," adapted by Tina Fey and starring Lindsay Lohan, Rachel McAdams, Lacey Chabert, Amanda Seyfried, and Lizzy Kaplan. Do you want to talk about Mean Girls? You can sit with us even if you don't wear pink on Wednesdays. Greg and Susan talk about the real aspects of "Girl World" reported in Wiseman's book; the film's iconic and almost timeless status; and how Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, and Tim Meadows steal scenes in their featured roles. As always, the two also discuss trivia about the film and share their three favorite scenes from the movie. Resources referenced in this episode: Talbot, M. (2002, February 24). The girls. The girls have gone wild. Kristen Maldonado (@kaymaldo) & I close out our Back to School Divas month with the Citizen Kane of our childhood: “Mean Girls” (2004). And of course, our diva of the week is everyone’s favorite “home schooled jungle freak” (Regina George’s words, not mine) Cady Heron aka Lindsay Lohan. Our “Mean Girls” discussion is so deep that I had to break down our “Mean Girls” extravaganza into two parts! So in this episode, we do a deep dive into the movie and discuss why Regina George is an evil genius, who really is Caesar & who really is Brutus, and answer whether or not this movie was an accurate portrayal of “Girl World”. Wear pink. Hide your Ndebelly tribe vases. And get in the car loser because we’re listening to this episode of Diva Dailies on Wednesday. (It’s the rules of feminism.)LOGLINE: After being home-schooled for most of her life in Africa, Cady Heron (Lindsay Lohan) & her family relocate back to the American suburbs - where she integrates into high school life for the first time ever & gets a crash course on what it’s like to be a teenage girl. *Email us for show notes: divadailiespod@gmail.com*Twitter & Instagram: @divadailiespod*Diva Hotline: 714-729-3121TIME STAMPS:- Oscar & Razzie Moment of the Week (02:49) - Movie Breakdown (09:23)

If you don’t know whether to use a mic or not—use a mic You have to train people on how to be on a mic—it is not a natural thing Why you should tune into the CIY webcast It's on the internet, and the internet is awesome Where else do you get a half hour of training for free? This is stuff you can give to your leaders. It is not long and drawn out (only 1 hr) Everything is more significant (than the first) with this webcast It will be encouraging and give you a different way of thinking about things Scott Rubin—Director of Student Ministries at Willow Creek Church—pastoring with high school in mind Look at them and imagine where they will be in a few years What do we need to be thinking about? Identify gifts in those years and put them on that track to develop it Think ahead but do not get ahead of themselves Give them opportunities to leverage it Sometimes the disruptive kid is the leader. Talk to them about it See if there is an upperclassman that they could be and have them hang around them. Call out to them what you see in them Engage the parents in any way that you can. Some kids might not show themselves, and parents can be a great insight. With leaders moving up or not always remember where you are trying to get the students. Never forget what it is like to be a teenager Never do youth ministry alone Mike Thomas—Why we stayed podcast Everyone that has stayed/left a different story but they all have friction. How will you respond? When church and God are blended, they become upset with everything. Their whole idea is broken. Michele Anderson—talking squirrels podcast—adolescent development Early adolescence 10-13 It can help to tailor to how the schools do it Reasons for a 7th-9thministry With longer adolescence, students need more time to develop How can we give coaching on mental development Ask them hard questions—they can handle it The psychological difference between boys and girls Girls will grow faster in every way Samantha—Jr. High Girls The enemy is attacking mainly through technology. Distracting us. And taking away our identity in Jesus with something else. Women should not prove their ability by everything that men do cause men do not do that for women. Elizabeth Elliot—Let me be a Woman Topics Girls need to hear Love, Suicide/depression, homosexuality, technology Always express love Dr. Andrew Root There are so many things that students need, does God need anything? Don’t think that God needs anything But He is a God that acts for us Out of the love and inner love of the Trinity out of the surplus of their passion they reach out to share their love God chooses to become vulnerable because of his compassion, mercy, and friendship He reaches out for a desire to love and care not because he needs it Jeff Wallace—Student leadership Gather at most one a month or once a quarter They are busy (and so are their parents who drive them) Have a good plan because time is precious It is not about a shirt or a title Leadership is about keeping your word—have them value being on the leadership team. Our trip through Girl World makes its second stop with Yorgos Lanthimos’ new period piece THE FAVOURITE, to see how its portrayal of women battling for social advantage in Queen Anne’s court looks next to the more contemporary high-school machinations of 2004’s MEAN GIRLS. After sharing our reactions to THE FAVOURITE and pinpointing its most “Lanthimosian” characteristics, we pit these two films against each other to see which portrayal of the cruelty and backbiting of Girl World—and Guy World!—is ultimately more fetch. Yorgos Lanthimos’ THE FAVOURITE is, in the words of star Rachel Weisz, a bit like a “high-stakes MEAN GIRLS”: It’s the story of a woman in power challenged by a fresh young outsider, only it plays out in the halls of court rather than the halls of a suburban high school. In this half of our pairing examining the power plays and back-biting of “Girl World,” we look back first at Mark Waters’s MEAN GIRLS to ask whether the much-quoted Tina Fey-penned comedy is still totally fetch, and which of its insights about teen girl-dom circa 2004 still resonate today. Plus, some feedback on recent episodes and a discussion of other pairings we considered for THE FAVOURITE. Please share your comments, thoughts, and questions about MEAN GIRLS, THE FAVOURITE, or both by sending an email to comments@nextpictureshow.net, or leaving a short voicemail at (773) 234-9730.
