Rudy Mancuso (Música, Awkward Puppets) joins us this week to share the drive and passion behind his directorial film debut: Música. He talks about the lived inspiration of synesthesia, why stopping listening to other was the smartest thing he could do, and how Camila Mendes was the only feasible option to star in the film. We also talk about being disengaged from non-quantifiable social media statistics, his Brazilian/ Italian upbringing, and his evolution from Vine to directing major motion pictures. In the new film Música (on Prime) we go into the musical mind of Rudy Mancuso. We learn how everyday sounds are re-contextualized into rhythms and music in his brain while he goes about his day. Because the POV of the film changes from what is real to what Rudy is hearing internally, the sound design and mix are extremely important to sell what is happening to the viewer. Re-Recording Mixers Christopher Aud (also Sound Supervisor) and Aaron Glascock take us through how the action "was recorded on set as if it was an orchestra" using up to 100 microphones, placed perfectly to capture each sound clearly. Then Sound Editorial and Mix had to go through everything that makes up the complex rhythms being played on camera by doors, knives, basketballs, and whatever else is handy. In today's episode, Danny and our guest host John Avina (www.avinacomics.com) kick things off with some cozy nostalgia, reminiscing about the times John has enjoyed watching Godzilla movies with his son. It's more than just fun; they discuss how these classic films inspire creativity across new generations. Spotlight on Streaming Sensations: First up, we dive into "Musica" on Amazon Prime. Danny and John explore Rudy Mancuso's innovative narrative and his unique portrayal of synesthesia, reflecting on how the film parallels Rudy's real-life experiences and delves into cultural nuances. Then, they switch gears to the "Fallout" series, another fresh arrival on Amazon Prime. They dissect the adaptation of the beloved video game, focusing on how true it stays to its roots, its character development, and how it's been received by the fans. The Viewing Format Face-Off: The conversation heats up as Danny and John debate the merits of binge-watching versus weekly episode releases. Using "Fallout" and "X-Men '97" as their case studies, they delve into how these strategies impact viewer engagement and the longevity of series enjoyment. Drawing Success - A Q&A with John Avina: John shares his personal journey within the indie comics industry, offering insights into his creative process and the challenges of publishing. From his initial steps into the comic world to behind-the-scenes anecdotes of his projects, John also provides valuable advice for aspiring creators looking to make their mark. Conclusion: As the session winds down, Danny recaps the insightful discussion with John and hints at exciting developments to come for him and Avina Comics. He reminds listeners to check out John's work online for a deeper dive into his creative world.
The musician and actor Rudy Mancuso lives with synesthesia, which in his case means hearing everyday noises as musical patterns. In his first feature film, “Música,” he gives us a look into the life of a young man who experiences the world through sound. Rudy chats with guest host Talia Schlanger about depicting his form of synesthesia on screen — and why hearing music in everything can be both a blessing and a curse.
Rudy Mancuso's synesthesia means daily sounds transform into layered rhythms and melodies. He explores that beautiful and frustrating experience in “Música.” House Speaker Mike Johnson is facing pressure from Democrats and foreign leaders to pass more aid to Ukraine, while hard-right members of his own party threaten his speakership. Former DOJ official Jeffrey Clark faces disbarment after his schemes to overturn the 2020 election. He's just one of nearly a dozen lawyers facing legal action for their work with Trump. HBO's “Curb Your Enthusiasm” ended its 12th and final season Sunday night. We review the episode and discuss how Westside Los Angeles featured prominently in the show.
YouTuber Rudy Mancuso has been following SCORE for years, as a musician and composer in his own right. He joins Kenny Holmes and Matt Schrader to discuss his breakout hit film from SxSW ‘MÚSICA' — a semi-autobiographic film, years in the making, that pushes musical possibilities to refreshingly brilliant musical storytelling. Directed as only a composer could, MÚSICA (also starring Camila Mendes and J.B. Smoove) is an exploration of synesthesia, in which Rudy experiences real life in semi-musical form. Rudy discusses how his content creator life was the perfect practice for navigating his own feature film, why puppets (yes, puppets) are so integral to his film, and why he never had any doubt he would direct AND compose the music himself. Interview by Kenny Holmes and Matt Schrader.

In this episode Ryan visits Shots Studios HQ in Los Angeles to chat with the company's CEO John Shahidi (aka @john on Twitter). John and the Shots Studios team have a unique background. Ryan met John and his brother, a co-founder of the company, nearly five years ago when they were building a social network for teens. The app had no likes, comments, follower counts, or other mechanics that often enable anxiety and bullying. Their mission was to create a more positive and healthy community. They've since pivoted and built a massive network of artists, comedians, and creators that includes Alesso, Anwar, Rudy Mancuso, Lele Pons, and Anitta. In this episode we talk about: How entertainment business models have changed with the evolution of streaming platforms. Why Vine had such a major influence on the current generation of content creators. The end of the 22-minute-long TV episode. We also talk about some of John's favorite products and podcasts. We’ll be back next week so be sure to subscribe on Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Spotify, Breaker, Overcast, or wherever you listen to your favorite podcasts. Also, big thanks to AngelList, FreshBooks and Bubble for their support.
