59. UCLA's final championship with Pete Trgovich

The final All-American to play for UCLA's John Wooden was Dave Meyers and on February 17, 1975, Meyers was on the cover of Sports Illustrated as the leading man in the final championship run for the Wizard of Westwood. A bruising big man, Meyers was the center on a team that wasn't supposed to make another run at a title. The dynasty was ended by North Carolina State the year prior... right? Not so fast. Wooden had one more run in him led by a group of guys who put the team first and checked their egos at the door. Along with Meyers was a tough shooting guard from Indiana by the name of Pete Trgovich who was one of four Bruins to average in double figures that year. After coming up short in the finals a year earlier, Trgovich and his teammates weren't about to let this final opportunity slip away. A magical run was ahead of them that saw them fight and claw and take home the 10th National Championship in 12 years for Wooden and his Bruins and this one was as special as any of them... maybe more so. Trgovich tells us how he motivated the team when they were down to Michigan in the first round of the tournament... how he felt for a kid who missed a big free throw for Louisville that allowed UCLA to win their semi-final matchup. And Trgovich gives a raw and honest take on his relationship with his coach. It wasn't what you would think... and the conversation the two had 20 years after Pete played for Wooden that the kid from Indiana has never forgotten. It's a different look into the last year of Wooden's magical run at UCLA led by a different guy who calls 'em as he sees 'em... then and now. Honest and insightful, Pete Trgovich leaves it all on the line... just like he did when he was lacing it up at Pauley Pavilion 50 years ago. Listen and subscribe wherever you get your podcasts. How to Become a Working Director without Film School with Cole WalliserI've always said that "film school" isn't for everyone. There is so much noise and advertising telling filmmakers that you NEED to go to film school to be taken seriously. I disagree COMPLETELY and so does today's guest! On the show today is director Cole Walliser. Here's a bit on Cole's amazing filmmaking journey so far.Cole Walliser, born in Steveston, BC Canada and bred in Vancouver, now lives in Los Angeles doing most of the same things he did in his country of birth – playing guitar, drinking scotch and directing cool videos.“I started with filming skateboarding at about 14. For some reason everyone kept handing me the camera. I guess I had a knack for getting cool shots. Music videos has been a natural progression.”Once he decided to pursue directing as a career, he knew he had to be in Los Angeles to reach his full potential. In LA, Cole began shooting videos for professional dancer friends on a pro-bono basis when a dancer, returning the favor, asked him to be involved in some dance videos for Miley Cyrus. These videos impacted the entertainment industry bigger than anyone could of imagined with everyone from Ellen DeGeneres to Madonna to Ryan Seacrest reporting and commenting on the videos. These videos then led him to direct Miley's 2008 Teen Choice Awards performance featuring LL Cool J.In 2009 Cole was introduced to P!NK's management, led by industry heavyweight Roger Davies. The meeting proved fateful, providing him with his next project directing the opening video for her Funhouse World Tour (originally slotted for Dave Meyers). Cole continued working with P!nk on the record-breaking Australian tour where he gave fans a glimpse into P!nk's life on tour with a 30-minute documentary “On Tour with P!nk”. His successive work on four new P!NK music videos (Please Don't Leave Me, Funhouse, Leave Me Alone [I'm Lonely], Mean), along with the documentary, found their home in P!NK's 'Greatest Hits So Far' DVD.Enjoy my inspiring conversation with Cole Walliser.

He has four younger brothers. He is the eldest grandson of the late Clifford Nickle, who was a prominent business owner in the Redondo Beach area of California. David-Matthew has a considerable family history in Canada, as his relatives are the founders of the Nickle Galleries at the University of Calgary. Entertainers have been prominent in David-Matthew's family for many generations. His great-aunt was actress Ann Paige, who appeared in the films China Doll and The Young Lions with co-stars Montgomery Clift, Marlon Brando, Dean Martin, and Hope Lange. David-Matthew fell in love with writing at the early age of 7, when his second-grade teacher recognized his storytelling talents after he wrote a Halloween-themed story titled The Blue Witch. Thanks to his sixth-grade drama teacher, who saw playwriting potential in him, Barnes' first play was produced when he was only 11. The script was a tribute to soap operas titled Life Isn't Easy. By the age of 13, David-Matthew was writing plays and short stories on a second-hand typewriter. David-Matthew credits meeting young adult author Norma Fox Mazer (who was a visiting author at his junior high school) as the defining moment when he knew he would become a writer. As a teenager, David-Matthew lived primarily in Northern California, where he attended the Visual and Performing Arts Center (VAPAC) at Sacramento High School and later Berkeley High School, where classmates included actress and model Rebecca Romijn and music video director Dave Meyers. In high school, David-Matthew found a love for cheerleading, which would become a part of his life for over a decade. At the age of 15, David-Matthew became a regular on the television series Dance Floor '86, which he appeared on for one year. That same year he published his first short story, a dramatic tale of five teenagers surviving the aftermath of a nuclear war titled The Children Are Crying, featured in the anthology Across the Generations. He has been a professional writer since. David-Matthew wrote and directed the coming-of-age indie film Frozen Stars (starring Lana Parrilla of ABC's Once Upon a Time), which received worldwide distribution and is available via Netflix DVD. The film was recognized for featuring a predominantly Latino cast. As a result, the film was the subject of international press coverage and received a world premiere screening at the Directors Guild of America in Los Angeles.David-Matthew then directed an independent documentary called Why So Fly? which offered a backstage look at the all-female hip-hop trio Northern State. They do this by partnering with churches around the world and empowering them to grow and plant new churches, so then they too can reach and disciple more people. Why do they do this? Because children are by far the world’s most vulnerable people group and many never get the chance to hear about Jesus. Stop Looking at the Scoreboard

I've noticed something lately I want to address….  Many of you gauge your success by looking at the results in your life rather than focusing on the quality and quantity of your work each day. Your happiness, fulfillment and even your satisfaction in life is based on the scoreboard you keep referring too.  I'm definitely one to suggest tracking and accountability, but NOT if it affects your self confidence, self esteem, and even your level of happiness in life.  You must learn to have VISION, but focus on the PRESENT.  Doing the best job you can in the moment.  Also, you must realize that HOW YOU DO ANYTHING IS HOW YOU DO EVERYTHING. I see examples everyday of entrepreneurs driving their activities based on the scoreboard in just one area of their life…explain… I'm going to give you some feedback I learned a long time ago from one of my favorite books by John Wooden called Wooden on LEADERSHIP…You will learn that in order to be successful you need to be a leader and in order to influence and have impact you will need leadership skills. There is no better example of this than John Wooden…let me explain for those of you who don't know who he is. John Robert Wooden (October 14, 1910 – June 4, 2010) was an American basketball player and head coach at the University of California, Los Angeles. Nicknamed the "Wizard of Westwood," he won ten NCAA national championships in a 12-year period as head coach at UCLA, including a record seven in a row. No other team has won more than four[1]in a row in Division I college men's or women's basketball.[2][3][4] Within this period, his teams won an NCAA men's basketball record 88 consecutive games. In his book on Leadership he talks a bit about the topic of “Don't Look at the Scoreboard”. He gives many great lessons but I particularly like the Rules to Lead by that he gives which are:  1-Identify Team Goals, Then File Them Away- To create FOCUS you must know where you are going, but them hyper focus on the present.  Goals are in the future.  Your activity and commitment to execution and growth doesn't exist in the future. 2-Give Full Respect to Each Competitor- Respect All, Fear None.  Don't change your game plan for competitors in life or business because of fear.  Just execute the best you can in the now. 3-LongTerm Success Requires Short-Term Focus- This is the KEY…Don't Look at the Scoreboard…rather, focus on Improvement…Not tomorrow, Not next week.  Today. I'd like to read you a short note from his book that was a Comment published by Dave Meyers, one of Wooden's 2 x National Champion Players, about Wooden.  I think it gives an excellent example of how Wooden taught and coached leadership from the perspective of someone he coached daily.  I want you to pay attention to the little details in this… Page 217 of Book from Wooden on Leadership Here is the bottom Line…too many of us are letting the scoreboard in life get us down.  We are allowing the past and future measurements of our life affect our mindset, our attitudes and our happiness levels.  As a result, we are less effective in the present.  But more importantly, we are unable to make the true impact on the world that we were destined to make.  So, I encourage you to the following: 1-Know where you are going and what your goals are with a CLEAR VISION, but 2-File your goals and vision away each day and focus on the Grind…Focus on Executing Your Plan. 3-Then, when you periodically refer back to the scoreboard with true reflection and evaluation, you will know that you left it all on the field and did everything in your power to create results. This my friends is the true recipe for success, and this is the recipe for true impact on the world.

Today. These videos then led him to direct Miley’s 2008 Teen Choice Awards performance featuring LL Cool J.In 2009 Cole was introduced to P!NK’s management, led by industry heavyweight Roger Davies. His successive work on four new P!NK music videos (Please Don’t Leave Me, Funhouse, Leave Me Alone [I’m Lonely], Mean), along with the documentary, found their home in P!NK’s 'Greatest Hits So Far' DVD.Enjoy my inspiring conversation with Cole Walliser.

With this said, today, I’m going to deviate from my normal program flow to look back and see where the journey has taken us. On today’s episode of the Future of Agriculture Podcast, my guest is a Purdue graduate who was brave enough to make a career change from being a Turkey breeder in Perdue Farms to sales. Dave Myers shares his journey in farming and how a man changed his perspective when he was taught about the soil and how it can maximize the growth in farming. As Dave saw the struggles of many growers, he appreciated that with his new career path, he can help growers become more efficient with how they grew their crop. Not only that, he created an online app, Bird Dog, that helps growers market themselves while protecting their reputations at the same time.   “Longevity and being able to put together a long term plan is a huge value for many growers.” – Dave Myers     This Week on The Future of Agriculture Podcast: He shares the burden of many growers who desire to expand their farming operations, but are concerned about their reputation if they pursue the landowner. As he elaborates the steps he took before Bird Dog was launched, he also enlightens us how Bird Dog helps growers market themselves to landowners. He explains what landlords are searching for when looking for people who would rent their land and what growers are looking for in a landlord. Dave talks more about Bird Dog in terms of geographical coverage of their services, the challenges they face involving landowners and growers, and the benefits of using Bird Dog. He also shares the mistakes and struggles people make regarding landowner-farmer relationship.     Check Out Dave Myers Across the Net: Bird Dog Website     Share the Ag-Love!
