Eki ja Niko saapuvat studioon & keskustelu lähtee horoskoopeista suoraan Sörnäisten pimeille kujille ja hierontalaitoksiin. Tarjotaanko siellä todellakin all in -hierontoja? Entä onko niistä kokemusta? Pysäyttävin hetki studiossa koetaan kun Saarinen heittää yllätyskondoomin päällensä viikonloppuna & meinaa sytyttää tuleen paitsi kullinsa, myös vastapuolen reiän. What?
Tähän emme onneksi tarvi vastausta, nimittäin he ovat täällä jälleen. Mäkikyrö lensi viimeiset lennot Salmelan kyydissä vai oliko se bussi sittenkin? Oli mikä oli, mutta myöhässä se oli. Saarinen elää aamuradion rytmissä, tekee tuorepuuroja ja askartelee. Mitä helvettiä? Onneksi muutama mies on kissan kielenä tulossa takaisin elämään, koska mitä tämä podcast olisikaan ilman sekopäisiä miehiä? Tervetuloa herra toimitusjohtaja! He ovat täällä tuplasti sinun ilonasi tänä viikonloppuna. He ovat taas studiossa. Saarinen potee vieläkin krapulaa ja ei Mäkikyrökään ihan pelkällä rakkaudella muistele erästä juhannuksen öistä. Nikon juhannus piti sisällään kidnappauksen, järveen tippumisen.. ja Jenna puolestaan joutui kotipalveluiden piiriin, kun Hellulla tuli hieman huono olo eräänä yönä. Näitä tarinoita ei kannata skipata. Ja juurikin luulit että jakso on ohi.. Niko tiputtaa vielä pienen yllärin studiossa. Se on lauantai. He ovat jälleen studiossa.

Karri Saarinen is the Co-Founder and CEO of Linear. The company has raised from some of the best in the business including Sequoia and Accel. Before founding Linear, Karri was the principal designer at Airbnb and the founding designer at Coinbase. 10 Lessons with One of Silicon Valley's Most In-Demand Founders: How to Become a Master Fundraiser: Why does Karri believe it is BS advice that founders should “always be raising”? What is Karri's biggest advice to founders on minimising dilution? What do most founders think they know about fundraising but do not? What is the best way to put your VCs to work? How can you give them homework to do? What has been the single best VC meeting Karri has had? What has been the worst VC meeting? Product and Growth: What does Karri mean when he says “founder must focus on quality growth over hypergrowth?” How does Karri advise founders on how soon to release and monetise their first product? Wait for platform ready or ship more feature products and monetise? What have been the single biggest product lessons for Karri from Airbnb and Coinbase? What are the most commons ways that growth plateaus? What breaks first? Karri AMA: Brian Armstrong or Brian Chesky; who would you invest in first? Would you sell Linear today for $3BN in cash? What do you know now that you wish you had known when you started? What did you believe that you now no longer believe?
A few years back, I got a DM from a founder wanting to meet and swap stories about adventures in entrepreneurship. Despite being backed by some of the top VCs in the world, they were taking a very different approach from the classic VC blitzscaling playbook. As we sat on the back patio of a bar in Brooklyn, it was clear that how Jori and his founding team at Linear were building was very aligned with how we were encouraging founders to consider building through indie (note - we are, sadly, not investors in Linear).Years and a Series B later, the Linear founders have continued building their company on their terms.A few weeks back, I had the opportunity to sit down with Jori's co-founder, Karri Saarinen, at his home in California for a wide-ranging talk. We covered everything from their time at some of the biggest hyperscalers of the last wave (think AirBnB, Coinbase, Uber), to net-negative lifetime burn rate (they've basically never spent the $52M they've raised), to their version of “Founder Mode”, to Finnish potato farming.A few notable takeaways from this conversation:Building a Different Kind of CompanyLinear aims to build a company and product in a way that differs from typical Silicon Valley startups by focusing on product quality and craft rather than rapid scaling. By maintaining profitability and controlled growth instead of burning through venture capital, they've been able to build a venture-scale company without giving up optionality. The founders draw on their experiences at companies like Airbnb and Coinbase to avoid pitfalls they observed there, like culture dilution from hyper-growth. They've emphasized a small, high-quality team over rapid hiring.Product and Growth PhilosophyLinear prioritizes product quality over growth hacks or aggressive marketing. By focusing on making the product so good that people naturally talk about it, they've been able to capitalize on word-of-mouth from satisfied users as a growth strategy.Founder ApproachKarri emphasizes the importance of founders staying connected to the product and the craft. Because they care deeply about the output and quality of work, they can avoid creating unnecessary management layers or processes. Karri advocates for founders to think critically about standard startup advice and find their own path that aligns with their strengths and values.Remote Work and CultureLinear is fully remote, which they see as an advantage in maintaining focus and avoiding unnecessary distractions like office design. The company emphasizes clear communication and looks for employees with strong communication skills to thrive in a remote environment. Remote works if the founders want it to.I really loved this conversation with Karri. It highlights for me that there really is a new wave of ultra ambitious founders who are finding a way to stay true to themselves and their visions by focusing on what matters, and putting themselves in a position to controlling their own destiny. Linear, Vanta, Zapier, Webflow, and so many others are validating that growth at all costs doesn't have to cost you everything. I hope you enjoy listening to this conversation as much as we enjoyed recording it.As always if you or someone you know are working on something that could be a fit for indie, don't hesitate to reach out.

The company is valued at $400 million, and has raised $52 million in funding from Accel, Sequoia, and some of the world's most successful entrepreneurs including the founders of Slack. Before Linear, Karri led product design at Airbnb and Coinbase. In our conversation, we'll discuss how his design background is helping him a product users love, his strong Product-Led Growth (PLG) approach to reach decision-makers, how to not always rely on data for product decisions, and his stance against incorporating AI-specific features into his product at this time. Whose all-time favorite NT epistle is Second Peter? Yeah, I thought so, i.e., nobody's. Terse yet wordy, full of highly developed doctrine yet also threats of judgment, and most likely pseudepigraphal, it's a tough nut to crack. In this episode, Dad and I haul out our exegetical nutcrackers and extract the sweetmeat (to push an already overstrained metaphor too far—though you gotta admit, it fits with Second Peter's prose style), which, oddly enough, proves to be the Parousia of Christ and God's astounding patience, desiring that all, yes all, come to repentance. Take a sad song and make it better? In this episode, Dad and I explore the oft-overlooked Epistle of Jude, including theories of authorship, its lavish use of apocryphal sources not included in either Christian or Jewish scriptural canons, its incipient trinitarianism, and the ongoing urgency of its charge against antinomianism. Toimittajana on Leena Peltokangas.
Äitisarja on takaisin toisen tuotantokauden merkeissä! Olemme tehneet tämän sarjan parantumiseksi ja varustamiseksi. Uskomme, että voimattomuuden aika on ohi! In the spirit of the season, here's a true gift from Aalto University in Finland in the form of an introduction to a framework called systems intelligence (SI). While the name might feel a even a bit cerebral, this work has deeply changed my personal overlook on life and relationships some ten years ago. It's also the practice to which I root my sisu to raise it from only a quality of surviving hardship to an expression of leadership with a hope of creating something of higher good around us.SI was originally developed by professor Raimo Hämäläinen and professor emeritus Esa Saarinen at Aalto University. They highlight that SI is a key competence we all possess as humans. It begins with "thinking about our thinking," as Saarinen puts it, to understand what actually drives our habits, patterns and actions. SI is about better thinking - not only about thinking or thinking more (that's why it is an update to systems thinking). Thinking about our thinking takes us to 'the source' of our action to illuminate a path toward better actions and when we place this understanding within a system, it becomes a dynamic inquiry towards excellence with regards to everything we connect with - within and outside.Below are four points from Hämäläinen ja Saarinen (2007, p. 59-60) that I mention in the episode (I've added a question to each point to use for self-reflection) & further reading. With this... thank you for your support in 2023 and may we both have a steady, strong year of sisu of the heart and love deep in the bones ahead!***1. Acknowledging that one's action and behaviour is the result of one's thinking. (“What constitutes my mental models, beliefs, assumptions, and interpretations?”)2. Acknowledging that one's thinking is likely to be one-sided and a far cry from an accurate grasp of the bigger picture; the holistic system around self is likely to be reflected in one's thinking only partially and possibly in a distorted form. (“How well do I know what I don't know?”)3. To act more intelligently in systemic environments, one must engage in meta-level thinking regarding their thinking. (“How do I use my thinking?”)4. One's framing of the environment and its interconnected systems is likely to reflect their subjective assumptions. Reflection on how I frame and look at things is an intelligent path to life in systems. we're diving into the story of Kaari Saarinen, the brains behind Linear, who's been turning heads in the project management world, capturing the interest and love of not just unicorn companies but also thousands of teams globally. Starting his career as a designer at the young age of 16, Karri played a crucial role in spreading startup culture in Finland through the Artic Startup blog when the startup scene was still finding its footing. Fast forward to his venture in the United States, where he founded the social bookmarking service, Kippt. However, it was the bumps and lessons from that journey that ultimately shaped the success story we know as Linear today. Tag along as we unravel the development journey of Linear, a company that managed to gain a massive organic user base with marketing costs of less than $35,000. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/getu-chandler/message

Aline B. Louchheim (1914-1972) was an art critic on assignment for the New York Times in 1953 when she first met the Finnish-American architect Eero Saarinen. She would become his wife and the driving force behind his rise to critical prominence. When Eero Met His Match: Aline Louchheim Saarinen and the Making of an Architect (Princeton UP, 2022) draws on the couple's personal correspondence to reconstruct the early days of their thrilling courtship and traces Louchheim's gradual takeover of Saarinen's public narrative in the 1950s, the decade when his career soared to unprecedented heights. Drawing on her own experiences as an architecture journalist on the receiving end of press pitches and then as a secret publicist for high-end architects, Eva Hagberg paints an unforgettable portrait of Louchheim while revealing the inner workings of a media world that has always relied on secrecy, friendship, and the exchange of favors. She describes how Louchheim codified the practices of architectural publicity that have become widely adopted today, and shows how, without Louchheim as his wife and publicist, Saarinen's work would not have been nearly as well known. Providing a new understanding of postwar architectural history in the United States, When Eero Met His Match is both a poignant love story and a superb biographical study that challenges us to reconsider the relationship between fame and media representation, and the ways the narratives of others can become our own. Annamarie's daughter, Eve, was born with a critical congential heart defect (CCHD) that presented no symptoms. By chance, the doctor screened her while still in the hospital and it ended up saving her life. That experience inspired Annamarie to create the Newborn Foundation, which focused on making initial CCHD screening (pulse oximetry) a standard of care in the United States. Further, she developed a medical device company called Bloom Standard that offers ultra sound screening (the second step of confirming CCHD) in remote locations around the globe. In this episode, Annamarie shares about the life-saving experience with Eve, how that inspired her to change public health policy, and her on-going passion for improving health care for children around the world.
Author & architecture critic Eva Hagberg rejoins the show to celebrate her new book, WHEN EERO MET HIS MATCH: Aline Louchheim Saarinen and the Making of an Architect (Princeton University Press). We get into how Aline built the narrative around Eero Saarinen's greatest buildings, her pivotal role in shaping the way we — media, laypeople, and critics — talk about architecture, and how publicity has been intertwined to architecture ever since. We also talk about how Eva's own career in architecture PR is woven through the book, why her original title was What Would Aline Do?, the moment she realized Aline & Eero's correspondence was Ph.D. thesis-worthy, and the notion of legacy and the ego of architects. Plus, Eva being Eva, we get into oversharing, divorce, IVF, the VERY impending birth of her first child, and more! Eero Saarinen, who died in 1961, is now one of the most well-known and respected Modernist architects in history, famous for the St. Louis Arch, the TWA Terminal at JFK, Dulles Airport, and many other innovative projects. More that about any other architect, his work signaled an optimistic future, a sweeping beautiful, curvy future that was going to require, as the song would say decades later, shades. But Saarinen wasn't always so well-known, and for about eight years before his death, there was one incredibly smart and talented woman who built and managed Saarinen's reputation into the mega-star he is today. We are joined by author Eva Hagberg, with the new book When Eero Met His Match: Aline Louchheim Saarinen and the Making of an Architect. And later, somewhat miraculously, we found Ruth Clements Pudists, Eero Saarinen's secretary, still in her 90's. With a memory better than any of us, she was there during the growth of the Saarinen practice and made arrangements with Aline when he died.
Lincoln observed that both slaveholders and abolitionists appealed to the Bible to make their case—but who was right, and why? Slaves appear throughout the Old Testament, yet the core story is the Exodus from slavery in Egypt. The Pauline and Petrine letters exhort peace and fair treatment between masters and slaves, but do not openly advocate for manumission. In Paul's shortest letter, a personal address to Philemon, he sends home a (runaway?) slave, Onesimus, not making it clear what Philemon ought to do with him—and yet, at the same exact time, Paul radically transforms the relationship between Philemon and Onesimus, and between the two of them and Paul, too. Joyful exchanges abound in these twenty-five verses, which proved to be a leaven in the lump of toxic human social systems. Notes: 1. Saarinen, The Pastoral Epistles with Philemon and Jude 2. The second episode in our gestational age series, today we talk about early-term (near-term)/term infants in the NICU. These are babies born between 37 0/7-weeks and 40 6/7-weeks. We talk about:What on Earth brings these babies to the NICU?!Assessment findings and expectations for uncomplicated newbornsWhat findings should make you really suspiciousHow recent practice changes have impacted the care these babies receive (baby-friendly, antibiotic stewardship, etc.)What normal newborn care looks like, including discharge testingWe also break down APGAR scoring…though the one thing we didn't specifically say is that APGAR scores are determined at one minute of life, 5 minutes of life. Additional APGAR scores are given every 5 minutes for 20 minutes or until a score of 7 or better is achieved.
