Sisu and Dissent: Keys to Constructive Badassary with Dr. Todd Kashdan

Right now, outrage seems as rampant as complacency, and both are lost opportunities from the vantage point of of life force. Being a "constructive badass" is a path to growth, change, and leadership amidst high pressure situations. The more we develop the skill of constructive dissent and engage in the art of insubordination—how to speak up with courage and clarity—we create degrees of freedom for courage in the everyday. For this Sisu Lab episode, I had the joy of interviewing Professor Todd Kashdan, one of the world's most cited psychologists and a curious thought leader on courage, character, and all things psychological flexibility. This conversation rocked such a unique flow of exploring life, ideas, and the co-creative space possible between curious humans anywhere that it felt like a real highlight. The experience itself, to me, speaks of how can help each other rise to our best just by being genuinely excited about each other (like kids!) and viewing moments of interaction as opportunities to unearth something valuable together.Todd and I jammed about:How to dissent effectively without breaking connectionWhy good people may struggle to be brave when it matters mostThe difference between being a principled rebel vs. a reactive troublemakerWhy true change-makers often face delayed rewards—and how sisu can help us stay the courseBalancing activism with mental health, and what keeps us going through long fights for changeThe gift of witnessing each other fail—and grow and heal togetherWhat it means to be an “upstander” (with a nod to educator Jackson Katz)How everyday acts of courage and kindness shape the bigger environment we call our lifeTodd's insights come from decades of research—and deep skin in the game. He's the author of several brilliant books, including Curious, The Upside of Your Dark Side, and most relevantly: The Art of Insubordination.

I'm joined for a conversation by Monique Borst, an entrepreneur, advisor and performance coach with 15 years in senior leadership positions. Monique has said, "Our businesses and personal lives are a mirror reflection of where we are on our own self-development journey, and can only be as successful as we are aware and in control of our thoughts and emotions."Together, we'll unpack what it means to lead with strength and empathy, to balance resilience with grace, and to embrace vulnerability as a force for healing. When we do this work that can take a bit of sisu not just in the traditional way of doing something physically tough ... but the courage it takes to steal the gold from the night of subconscious to find the treasures we discover in our quiet, inner places can illuminate the everyday moments of business, leadership, and community. For this episode you can reflect if you like:

In this thought-provoking podcast episode, Misty Adoniou and Phil delve into the intricacies of evidence-based teaching, exploring its history and current challenges. Misty challenges the misconception that teachers simply need ready-made materials to alleviate their time constraints, asserting that teachers are time-poor due to administrative burdens, not lesson planning. She emphasises the importance of evidence-based teaching, which involves adapting instruction based on observable student needs, rather than blindly following pre-made lesson plans.Misty traces the evolution of educational theories over the past 80 years, from behaviourism to nativism to social interactionism, highlighting Australia's leadership in literacy education since the 1980s. She laments the decline of curriculum advisory expertise within education departments, advocating for a return to collaborative, evidence-based approaches among educators, universities, and policymakers. The conversation also touches on the detrimental impact of commercialisation in education and the unintended consequences of standardised testing like NAPLAN. Misty encourages teachers to maintain their scientific inquiry mindset, collect data on interventions, and demand evidence-based practices rather than succumbing to commercialised solutions. Finally, Misty celebrates teachers as scientists in their own right, urging them to trust their expertise and resist external pressures. She emphasises the need for autonomy and professional judgment in teaching, reinforcing the message that educators are integral to shaping effective, evidence-based practices in the classroom.NEW PODCASTEvidence Based Teaching, What Is It? – Part 1, Ep 107 with Misty AdoniouTEACHIFIC RESOURCESUnderstanding and Using the Science of Reading - Podcast TranscriptPODCASTSUnderstanding and Using the Science of Reading - Part 1,Part 2COURSESUnderstanding and Using the Science of Readingwith Diane Snowball and Keay CobbinToward Comprehensive, Research-Informed Literacy Instruction: Thinking With, Against, and Beyond the Science of Reading(Sponsored by the Ithaca College Department of Education, February 22, 2024BOOKSBruner, J., The Process of Education, Harvard University Press, 1977Dewey, J.D., How We Think, Dover Publications, Boston,1997Vygotsky, L., Thought and Language, The Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 1986JOIN TEACHIFIC NOW AND SAVE!If you join Teachific by June 1st you will lock in a $12 a month membership price. In episode 107 of the podcast "Evidence Based Teaching," literacy expert Misty Adoniou joins host Phil to delve into the essence of evidence-based teaching. Misty, an Associate Professor in Language Literacy and TESOL, brings extensive experience and insights to the discussion. She emphasises the importance of evidence-based teaching, highlighting its role in fostering observable, positive learning outcomes for students.Misty explains that evidence-based teaching is deeply rooted in the scientific method, tracing back to the late 1800s with educators like Dewey advocating for rigorous experimentation in education. She elucidates how educational research undergoes scrutiny through peer-reviewed academic journals and conferences, ensuring the validity and reliability of findings. Misty underscores the complexity of applying scientific principles in the classroom due to diverse contextual variables, challenging the notion of one-size-fits-all programs. Moreover, Misty demystifies the teacher's role as a scientist, highlighting the intricate process of lesson planning as a micro-application of the scientific method. She emphasises the teacher's expertise in gathering evidence, assessing outcomes, and iteratively refining instructional practices. Misty critiques the trend of commercialised "evidence-based" programs, asserting that genuine evidence-based teaching is intrinsic to the teaching profession and rooted in ongoing scientific inquiry.Ultimately, Misty's insights underscore the profound scientific nature of teaching and the necessity for educators to embrace evidence-based practices tailored to their unique classroom contexts. The podcast provides a thought-provoking exploration of evidence-based teaching, challenging misconceptions and empowering educators with a deeper understanding of their craft.NEW PODCASTEvidence Based Teaching, What Is It? Systems Intelligence: Path to Sisu as Heart and Leadership in Tough Times

In the spirit of the season, here's a true gift from Aalto University in Finland in the form of an introduction to a framework called systems intelligence (SI). While the name might feel a even a bit cerebral, this work has deeply changed my personal overlook on life and relationships some ten years ago. It's also the practice to which I root my sisu to raise it from only a quality of surviving hardship to an expression of leadership with a hope of creating something of higher good around us.SI was originally developed by professor Raimo Hämäläinen and professor emeritus Esa Saarinen at Aalto University. They highlight that SI is a key competence we all possess as humans. It begins with "thinking about our thinking," as Saarinen puts it, to understand what actually drives our habits, patterns and actions. SI is about better thinking - not only about thinking or thinking more (that's why it is an update to systems thinking). Thinking about our thinking takes us to 'the source' of our action to illuminate a path toward better actions and when we place this understanding within a system, it becomes a dynamic inquiry towards excellence with regards to everything we connect with - within and outside.Below are four points from Hämäläinen ja Saarinen (2007, p. 59-60) that I mention in the episode (I've added a question to each point to use for self-reflection) & further reading. With this... thank you for your support in 2023 and may we both have a steady, strong year of sisu of the heart and love deep in the bones ahead!***1.     Acknowledging that one's action and behaviour is the result of one's thinking. (“What constitutes my mental models, beliefs, assumptions, and interpretations?”)2.     Acknowledging that one's thinking is likely to be one-sided and a far cry from an accurate grasp of the bigger picture; the holistic system around self is likely to be reflected in one's thinking only partially and possibly in a distorted form. (“How well do I know what I don't know?”)3.     To act more intelligently in systemic environments, one must engage in meta-level thinking regarding their thinking. (“How do I use my thinking?”)4.     One's framing of the environment and its interconnected systems is likely to reflect their subjective assumptions. Reflection on how I frame and look at things is an intelligent path to life in systems. What we know less about is the life energy behind this enduring and persevering that becomes visible usually only when we are about to run out of it.... join me for an episode of sisu lab in which I share some words and concepts around the elusive topic of human spirit... elan vital, Wille zum Leben, qi, chi and so on...Show notesThe Energies of Men William James, The Philosophical Review, Vol. 16, No. 1 (Jan., 1907), pp. 1-20 https://www.jstor.org/stable/2177575The Energies of Men William James (1914)https://ia802608.us.archive.org/18/items/energiesofmen00jameiala/energiesofmen00jameiala.pdfEmbodied fortitude: An introduction to the Finnish construct of sisu Authors E E Lahti (2019) https://internationaljournalofwellbeing.org/index.php/ijow/article/view/672A Wife's Letter Rabindranath Tagore (1914, Translated from Bengali by Prasenjit Gupta) https://parabaas.com/translation/database/translations/stories/gStreerPatra1.htmlTwin Tracks: The Autobiography by Roger Bannistehttps://www.amazon.com/Twin-Tracks-Autobiography-Roger-Bannister/dp/184954686XTyöstä ja elinvoima by Prof Eero Riikonen (2013)http://www.psykologia.fi/arkisto/vanhat-numerot/vanhat-numerot-ghost/283-psykologia-2014-04/kirjat/339-tyosta-elinvoimaaFind more about sisu at www.sisulab.com or check my book 'Gentle Power: A Revolution in How We Think, Lead, and Succeed Using the Finnish Art of Sisu' (2023). Sisu speaks of the extra reserves within individuals everywhere to endure challenges and take action against slim odds. However, while sisu denotes extraordinary power to overcome the extraordinary and do the extraordinary, it can also end up creating extraordinary problems. This would most likely happen with mindless sisu that is out of balance, is done at all cost, and happens usually when we are out of touch with our blind spots. The possible negative outcomes of unbalanced or hard sisu include harm to our mental wellbeing and physical health, as well as to other people and team success. Sisu is an interconnected matter. Rarely is your sisu only your sisu or my sisu solely my sisu. One of the main findings of the ultra run field work portion of my PhD on sisu is the idea of sisu that exists, and is born from, the space in-between you and I. This episode is about how we inspire strength and fortitude in each other. Furthermore, our own sisu can be inspired by the strength we see and witness in others and their actions, and this impact  can extend to drawing strength from even those dear to us who are long gone. How do we find the strength to keep going when it feels like there's nothing left inside of us? The Finnish philosophy of sisu shows us a new way to look at power and perseverance—not as force and domination but as the harmonious expression of human character in everyday actions. "The important thing is not your process. The important thing is your process for improving your process." (Ryan Todd). In this episode we start to dig into our stories of sisu (a practice introduced in the previous episode) to build our personal manual for navigating tough times. The key is to not continue to rely on sisu to appear randomly (which happens too because it is life force whose job is to keep you alive) or in ways that leave unnecessary damage its wake due to unwise over-extension or lack of self-care during the process. Some healthy steps toward constructive sisu include:  1) intentionally preparing for times that demand sisu and 2) cultivating patterns and habits that promote healthy sisu. I recommend using and crafting a diary specifically dedicated for understanding your patterns and habits around sisu. A book that over time gets filled with your most valued insights and tips from both life and research regarding the many pathways to fortitude. Thus, it can become the basis  for your personal user manual for enduring hardship and expressing courage in the face of nonexistent odds. The problem isn't so much that we don't have strength. We simply get caught in dysfunctional patterns (negative thinking, projections, and nervous system that is off whack) and forget the levers we can and must pull to access sisu. In this episode I share some of the background to the very early days of researching sisu, what the word means, and I present the idea of using the upcoming podcast series as a journey into your own sisu.If you wish, prepare by getting a special notebook (for ease of access and retrieval of the tools) dedicated to collecting material, stories, best practices and other notes relevant to you to get intimate with your own sisu: what it means, where have you displayed it, what stands in its way, what has helped you in tough times in the past, and getting started with cultivating a daily practice for sisu. Learning to recognise sisu will offer a foundation for our ongoing (go at your own pace) inquiry that you're welcomed to join. The 1st practice: Stories of sisuSisu is extraordinary determination in the face of adversity. Take a peaceful moment to look back at your life and note down deeply transformational, challenging moments you've encountered and overcome. Life events where you tapped into your ability to exceed your previously assumed capacities, found the courage to take action against extremely slim odds, or experienced almost a kind of "intestinal fortitude" that seems to be like "magic" (as some respondents my research described sisu) in that helped you "do the impossible."The human brain is evolutionarily wired for survival and notice what doesn't work and where we feel we have failed (this is called the negativity bias and its function is to provide us with information that can help us stay alive. However, it does this at the expense of the positive cues and what has gone well). Rick Hanson, PhD, describes that the effects of negativity bias may include a growing sensitivity to stress, upset, and other negative experiences; a tendency toward pessimism, regret, and resentment; and a long shadows cast by old pain. This assignment invites you to notice the moments in your past and present when you have found the strength to go on and have tapped into what the Finns call sisu. Every individual has sisu. Researchers have been able to influence the brain chemistry of mice by changing the balance between beneficial and disease-causing bacteria in their gut, thereby leading it to become bolder (Bercik et al., 2011) and less anxious (Bravo et al., 2011). When Bercik and his research team (Bercik et al., 2011) transplanted gut microbiota between different strains of mice, they discovered that behavioural traits would transmit along with the microbiota. The recipient animals would take on traits of the donor's personality and relatively timid mice would become more exploratory. Bercik et al. (2011). The liberal arts are a frequent political punching bag for partisans on both sides of the aisle. Progressives have gotten used to “deconstructing” the “dead White males” of Western classics, leading populists to view them as either irrelevant for finding work or an actual threat to students' well-being.  What if neither view was right? What if the liberal arts are more important and more beneficial than they get credit for?  One place where this idea has been put into practice since the 1930s is https://www.sjc.edu/ (St. John's College) in Annapolis, Maryland. St. John's is famous for https://www.sjc.edu/academic-programs/undergraduate (its great books curriculum), which takes the foundational texts of Western civilization seriously as the starting point for a life well lived and, somewhat surprisingly, a strong foundation for work and career. Over the last three episodes, we've been exploring the role our thoughts play in moving us forward or holding us back. So, if you haven't listened to those yet, I encourage you to go back to Episode 23 as that's the beginning of our Thought Series. And as we've discussed all through this series, our career and life will go in the direction of our consistent patterns of thought. We're not taught this. We don't think life works that way. We're taught that the way we feel and our ability to be successful come mostly from EXTERNAL things. Like our boss liking us.Or our company being healthy.Or sometimes we attribute it to ourselves in the actions we take or don't take. But what if I told you there was something that comes BEFORE those things. Something INTERNAL. Something that you ALONE control.Interesting huh?The idea that you can truly chart your own destiny. That it isn't dependent on a specific person or being in the right place at the right time or whatever. Sure, those things don't hurt, but that's not the key. And that's good news because if it WAS, it would mean our ability to have the success we want would be completely outside our control.    The key is HOW WE THINK about our career, our possibilities, our capabilities. And trust me when I say that this is the key to unlocking not only your TRUE POTENTIAL but it's also the key to being able to achieve everything you dream of.This week, we're closing out the Thought Series by talking about Thought Alignment. So, let's dive in.This is one of my favorite topics when it comes to how our thinking affects our lives. Because the simple truth is, and this whole episode comes down to one simple thought, WHAT YOU SAY TO YOURSELF MATTERS. And, HOW OFTEN YOU SAY IT MATTERS.Because as we discussed in the last episode, the repetition and consistency of our thoughts become deeply entrenched Thought Pathways in our brain. We know from neuroscience that this biology. Quite simply, it's how our brains work. So Thought Navigation, this week's topic, is about the importance of aligning our thoughts with the direction we want to go so we ensure we actually GET THERE. Let's look at how high-performing athletes or successful businesspeople achieve top tier levels of success. When we look at them from our perspective, we tend to look at the actions they take or things they do. And then we say, “Well, there's lots of different ways to go about being successful. Everyone does it differently.”To some extent it's true in that we all have unique strengths to bring to that thing. But if you look deeper at the inner life – the MINDS – of the most successful or accomplished athletes or businesspeople, you'd find one common thread. The key to their success is about the way they USE or DIRECT their mind. They don't leave their thoughts or beliefs about themselves, to chance. They are intentional not only about WHAT THEY WANT TO DO but also ABOUT THEIR DEEP BELIEF AND COMMITMENT IN THEIR ABILITY TO DO IT. NO. MATTER. WHAT.You see, when we commit to BEING our best, most high-performing self, we're able to FIND that capability within ourselves. We take actions that are aligned with being our best. We DO our best consistently. And as a result, we BECOME our best self.Thought Alignment is about choosing to believe in our ability to DO the things we want to do. And when we our inner world stays focused and aligned, our actions stay focused and aligned. It's what many refer to more broadly as “Mindset” or a “Success Mindset.”For more, give the episode a listen.

Don't miss this vblog on YouTube or catch our Read This segment of our One Thing Series podcast--books you need to read to lead better and grow faster. Featured Author: John Dewey (October 20, 1859–June 1, 1952) Featured Books: Experience and Education and How We Think Leaders are busy. Educators are always running short on time so it is of the utmost importance to select the right books, ones that will take your leadership skills to another level. Think about the following reflection questions as educators: Do you want to think more clearly about thoughts, balance of mind, and how to think critically? Do you want to understand how to analyze your school and thoughtfully determine what decisions will lead to the greatest gains for students? Do you want to better understand how to lead change, maintain high standards, and not suppress individuality? If you answered a BIG YES to these questions then take some time and enjoy these two incredible books by one of the most influential educational reformers in history, John Dewey. Experience and Education We'll start with Experience and Education. Honestly it's tough to choose what books to select since John Dewey was such a prolific writer. However, these two do a great job encapsulating the guiding thoughts of John Dewey. Experience and Education is a relatively short work in which Dewey analyzes education. This is one lens to read this book from--not only to learn what John Dewey thought and believed in but to also understand how he critically examined our profession as a philosopher. This is a very important skill for any administrator. What we find sobering is that when you delve into this work and read how Dewey contrasts traditional and progressive education, you almost can't believe that it was written so long ago. It reads like a present day reform effort. There is no doubt that education has advanced, but the system itself has not fundamentally changed. How We Think The second book we chose was How We Think (free download), partly because it shines an amazing light into what it means to be human, and, also, because we are educational leaders, we must understand the importance of how we operate as people. Our thoughts and our actions are what define us as leaders; by understanding ourselves better, we create greater potential for success in others. An example of how Dewey delves into our inner workings is in Chapter 2 with our need to train our thinking. This is a concept that has spanned many works from Tony Robbins, Awaken the Giant Within, to books on Emotional Intelligence. Check out Dewey's quote below. In this second episode of the series, we continue to look at the dynamics of Toni Morrison's Beloved, specifically chapters 5-8. The episode focuses on the use of magical realism and the supernatural, and particularly the freeing and enslaving aspects of language--what is said vs. what is not said--in the textual structure. To do that, I look at some philosophies of language in snippets of Huxley, Heidegger, Dewey, and some casual references to Derrida. Thursday, October 24, 2019, 12 noon WPKN 89.5 FM www.wpkn.org Host: Duo Dickinson Climate Change, Artificial Intelligence, The Trump Presidency: the end of the beginning of the 21stcentury is complicated. In the world of design and architecture there has been another, tiny, change amid all this extremity: how we are looking at the design of EVERYTHING. People all have a home. Here in Connecticut those with freestanding homes define them –they think of “styles”: “Modern” or “Traditional” or even “cape” or “Split Level” – but those are choices, existing things, even existing “styles to design to. Only 5% of homes have any architect touch them, but every body who changes them thinks about design. With ALL of this Change, is the way we think of Design changing too? Everything we use, everything we make, everything we interact with has, in some way been designed: but especially where we live, those free-standing homes, apartments, mom’s basement. How We See, How We Think, How We Design, How We Learn from our homes: Architects from California and Colorado and the Department Chair of the University of Hartford Architecture Department join HOME PAGE. Chris Andrews, Don Ruggles and Jim Fuller talk about the way things are changing.

“Go make a ruckus.” - Seth Godin Regardless of your particular brand of business, money is not enough to drive most of you — there’s something deeper. There’s a problem that you’re trying to solve or an improvement to an existing way of doing things. If you’re an entrepreneur, there’s something special that you’re bringing to the table that no other person or business is doing in the exact same way. In our minds, you’re all making a ruckus. Ruckus-making, in the context of business, is the same thing as innovation (with maybe a little bit of a political bent). In fact, YOU having a business is a very political act. You are veering outside of the path of the dominant economic culture. The antidote to the monopolistic economic culture comes in the form of the artisan. As modern humans, we’re drawn to local, small-batch, unique. They serve as a counterweight to the heavy core of big business, big agriculture, big healthcare, and big tech. As a community creating intentional, conscious businesses, we are paving the way for a new brand of artisan: digital artisans.   How can you shake things up in your own small corner of a market somewhere? Lisa Ellis allegorizes the classic story book tales to help us understand the greatest love story of our Heavenly Father, the church, and Jesus. But who is the evil stepmother?
