We also touched upon his deep interest in the cross section of contemporary art and spirituality. We discuss the incredible synchronicities that led him to the east, and to becoming a practitioner in Tibetan Buddhism. Evil Becky sits down with the talented Jessie Makela to talk ultra numbers. As long-distance runners, we are often pegged as being a bit neurotic, and there's one thing we all seem to love...NUMBERS. Whether those numbers represent distance, elevation, pace, speed, time, calories, heart rate or something else, chances are we're all keeping one or more "running" tallies. EB and Jessie talk about the joys of running and how all that number counting can both clear and clutter our path. So, can we count on you to listen in (get it...count...numbers). Episode 135 – Interview with Ray Makela, 5 Leadership Skills to Build a Stronger TeamRay Makela, has achieved 20 years of sobriety, after 20+ years of daily drinking. He comes from a family with alcoholism on both sides of his family. He is an author, speaker, and business executive with 25 years of management, consulting, and sales experience. At Sales Readiness Group(SRG), Ray oversees all client engagements and the delivery of sales and sales management training programs. He has delivered programs for clients suchas Microsoft, Infor, Smartsheet, Alcon, Edwards Lifesciences, ABM Industries,HD Supply, Timken, and Walmart. Earlier in his career, Ray served for seven years as an officer in the US Navy.Today, he is on a mission to help individuals improve their sales careers and fulfill their aspirations while demonstrating compassion and empathy for others.Ray shares that, “leadership and management skills often get confused and interchanged when talking about developing more effective front-line managers. But there are some key differences. While one is not necessarily more important or better than the other, both need to be understood and developed in order to get the most out of your Team.”Here are five key leadership principles that contribute to being a good leader:Leadership is about having a vision.Leadership is about being proactive.Leadership is about motivating and inspiring people.Leadership is about initiating change.Leadership is about building people. It could be said that management is about handling today, while leadership is about building for tomorrow. Episode 191 of the InGoal Radio Podcast, presented by The Hockey Shop Source for Sports, features a couple of great goalie conversations with Annti Raanta of the Carolina Hurricanes and Amanda Makela of the PWHPA.In the feature interview, presented by Sense Arena, Raanta shares insights from a career that has included playing partners like Corey Crawford, Henrik Lundqvist and now Frederik Andersen, and some of the keys he has taken away from each. Raanta also shares a tip on setting up your skates that he picked up from Lundqvist, and explains why that method now has him trying to transition in-season to the new Bauer KONEKT skates.Makela also joins the show for the first time to talk about a fascinating -- and at times frustrating -- career that includes being a NCAA standout at Mercyhurst, the battle of playing far too few games the past couple of seasons, and why it led to a stint in Sweden. As a goalie and goaltending coach who works with Jon Elkin of the Toronto Maple Leafs as well as running Mak Goaltending, Makela has lots of great advice, including how to manage your games in those periods when all you seem to get is practice time. All that, plus our weekly plus a trip to The Hockey Shop Source for Sports for a look at the new Bauer Promo-V stick, a limited edition model that weighs in at just 575 grams.

IT'S SMARTSVILLE, BUT HOURS AFTER. BONUS EPISODE 1! Tonight, hours after, in Smartsville, Super-Tits-Stephy has wrangled up a gaggle of girls to indulge in a little ladies only night. Stephany is joined by Melissa(Black Stiletto), Amber, and Makela. Black Stiletto and Stephy set the story straight on what they know to have gone down on the trip to see Bert and Steve-O. The podcasts that discuss this are "Pod Opera," and "Nassy Bois" if you would like to listen to both sides of the story. They do vary a little. Stephy and Amber then go over their introduction to each other. A story that involves drinking, dancing, fishing, and of course, Matt going wild and splashing into the lake. Makela comes in not too far along and they discuss the crazy party where Melissa met the girls. Stephy also describes how she met Makela. It was of course an insane party. "Party her face off" is the episode where the fellas describe that party. Melissa talks about a crazy camping trip she went on back in the day with the old Penn Valley Crew. These girls are savage for keeping up with the knuckleheads that make up our digital town of Smartsville. They are a blast to be around and they can gab with the best of them. Just what is the heliosphere and how doe sit work? What shape is the heliosphere (spoiler alert, probably not a sphere). At the very edge of our solar system lies the boundary between our neighborhood and interstellar space. Do outside forces from interstellar space jumble up the heliosphere? Sandwiched between Space and the Earth, the Ionsphere buzzes and hums with a pulsing generator. Winds from earth can bend and shape plasma in our ionsphere to make a generator. Moving a conducting object through a magnetic field can generate electricty, and its happening right now 100km above our heads. M. Opher, J. F. Drake, G. Zank, E. Powell, W. Shelley, M. Museums tend to be verbal spaces: there’s usually a lot of words. Galleries open with walls of text, visitors are presented with rules of do and don'ts, and audio guides lead headphone-ed users from one piece to the next, paragraph by paragraph. But Speechless: Different by Design, a new exhibit at the Dallas Art Museum and the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, guides visitors as far away as possible from words with six custom art installations. In this episode, curator Sarah Schleuning and graphic designer Laurie Haycock Makela discuss how their personal experiences lead them to Speechless, and describe the process and considerations of putting it all together. It’s graduation season at FinnU! Student representative, Haley Makela stopped by Finlandia Fridays this week to talk about her experiences as an active member on campus. Featuring guest host Monica Freeman, the two soon-to-be-graduates discussed their excitement to graduate. “I’m very thankful to be done,” remarked Makela, “it’s been a long four years.” For full show notes, visit finlandia.edu/fridays
Monica Freeman and Gina Geliche are back this week with a new episode of Lion Around. Recording on the Finlandia Fridays set, the co-hosts are joined by Haley Makela and Samantha Richards. Makela, a senior marketing major from Atlantic Mine, was featured on the “What Does Your Major Do” episode earlier this semester. Richards is a senior accounting major from Dollar Bay. Geliche, Freeman and Makela will all graduate in the spring, while Richards will graduate in December. With graduation in the near future for all of the students, they chose to talk about LinkedIn. All four students have LinkedIn accounts, Makela and Geliche having their accounts for the most time. Freeman made her's within the past year, and Richards within the past month. With LinkedIn being an important tool for students and professionals in the workforce, here are some tips on how to use LinkedIn from students who have a vague idea of how to use the app. SIX TIPS FOR COLLEGE STUDENTS USING LINKEDIN CREATE A PROFILE Tip one from the students is to create a LinkedIn profile, if you have not done so already. LinkedIn is an easy way for potential employers to find job prospects. With a LinkedIn profile, one can also look and apply for jobs, while building their network of connections. Profiles are important to have if you are graduating or looking to get a job, whether it is part-time or full-time. REMEMBER YOU HAVE AN ACCOUNT AND KEEP IT CURRENT For tip two, Geliche stressed remembering you actually have an account. The account should be updated often, so the information on the account is current. Whether or not someone uses LinkedIn to its full potential, it is an important tool to have. Remembering that you have an account and using it every once in a while, can be beneficial to current and future employers. USE A PROFESSIONAL PORTRAIT Tip three is have a professional portrait for your profile. For Finlandia students, FinnU has a portrait session every semester for students who need or would like a professional portrait. LinkedIn users can also add cover photos to their profiles. Makela’s cover photo is a basketball court, because she would like to get a job in sports. While a cover photo is not necessarily needed, the group decided that the cover photo should reflect what you are interested in. LinkedIn will also inform you how your profile ranks and what should be added to improve it. BUILD UP YOUR PROFILE WITH EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS Tip four add your past and current job experiences. Good profiles have up-to-date information on them. With job experiences, users should also post any skills and volunteer work. LinkedIn also allows users to upload media to their profiles. Freeman, for example, has her resume posted on her account. Makela suggested to Geliche that she should share her portfolio on her profile. DON’T BE AFRAID TO ASK FOR ENDORSEMENTS The group also suggested to ask for endorsements. Employers and co-workers can comment on a user’s profile by endorsing the skills they listed on their profile. Along with endorsements, recommendations can be added to profiles as well. NETWORK, NETWORK, NETWORK Networking is an important aspect of LinkedIn. Building your network is staple to the app, as it is in the workforce. The group recommends continually building your network. Makela and Freeman can attest that networking has helped them open doors in the past. Makela, Geliche, Richards and Freeman hope these tips were helpful to those who needed help with LinkedIn. For those who don’t need help, keep connecting and don’t forget your password!

Hosts Gina Geliche and Monica Freeman are asking the serious questions in this week’s episode of Lion Around. Recorded in Maki Library, Geliche and Freeman collected a few guests to see what they think various majors do in their school work. This episode is brought to you by the person who referred to art school as “crayon college.” Geliche stated that she has heard the term before and that people tend to assume that art majors color all day for their degree. Wanting to challenge this perception, Geliche came up with the idea to ask students in other degree programs “what do you think my major does?” Accompanying the hosts are students Haley Makela and Lane Brown. Makela is a senior marketing major. Also a captain on the women’s basketball team, goalie for women’s soccer, vice president of student senate, member of Alpha Lambda Delta, and employee of the bookstore. Brown is a sophomore who was formerly studying nursing but is now studying for a degree in criminal justice (CJ). He is also a member of the baseball team. As a friendly reminder for the listeners, Freeman and Geliche also stated their majors. Geliche is earning a degree is fiber arts with a minor in Finnish studies, and Freeman is working towards a business degree in marketing and graphic design. Kicking off the discussion, Geliche admitted that when she thinks of Makela’s major, she imagines Makela using an old school calculator and doing a lot of math. Makela corrected Geliche stating that while she has taken an introductory math class and two semesters of accounting, business majors tend to do a lot of writing. Brown also chimed in saying that he also writes consistently for his degree. Turning to criminal justice, Makela described the degree as reading pieces, summarizing the pieces and then writing about the pieces. Freeman assisted in this description by saying not all CJ majors go to the police academy. Brown supported Makela’s statement by stating that someone once described his degree as a “backup English major.” What Freeman stated was also correct, CJ majors can go into the police academy as a career path, but they can also go in the federal sector or go to law school. Brown then tried to describe Geliche’s major. Between Makela and Brown, the common consensus was Geliche makes clothes and knits for her degree. While the two were not far off, Geliche agreed that she does sew and knit, but she hates sewing. Geliche enjoys weaving, and does a lot of computer work to create different pieces. Rounding out the conversation, the group discussed Freeman’s degree, primarily focusing on the graphics aspect. Makela described graphic design as hanging out with professor Tom Adolphs and being frustrated when Adobe products don’t work correctly, while also bringing in the business aspect of what color will make people notice this piece. Brown assisted with description by adding that Freeman has to decide what layout works the best and is the most eye-catching. Freeman agreed with the description, and added onto it mentioning that with her degree she can go out and assist small businesses since she has the “best of both worlds.”

He is the man responsible for helping me write out dream lines that actually worked, kept me on task with my goals and to-do lists and was there when I was making less than $150 a month and barely getting by. I'm excited to have back in Chiang Mai and as this week's guest.
