Welcome back, everyone! This week, we're diving into a topic that hits home for so many of us: how we talk about food with our kids (and perhaps even around them when we think they're not listening). I'm joined by the fabulous Fiona Kane, an award-winning Nutritional Medicine Practitioner and Mind Body Eating Coach, and we explored how our words and attitudes around food can set the stage for our kids' relationship with eating (and emotions!) - and yes, how we can keep it healthy too. We'll chat about the accidental ways we nudge our kids toward emotional eating (who knew?), how our own beliefs about food can rub off on them, and why asking open-ended questions can be a game-changer for a more mindful approach. Fiona, who's been all over Sky News Australia, 9 News, and ABC Radio, brings her practical tips on breaking habits like boredom eating and finding joy outside of food—for both us and the kids. So, if you're looking to raise happy, healthy eaters (or tackle a few food habits of your own), plug in! This episode is packed with aha moments and doable steps to help the whole family enjoy a balanced relationship with food. In this episode, Kylie and Stephanie delve into the complexities of food relationships, emotional eating, and the impact of trauma on our eating behaviors. They discuss the importance of nervous system regulation and how it affects our ability to make choices around food. Stephanie introduces her concept of somatic eating as an alternative to intuitive eating, especially in stressful situations. The conversation emphasizes the need for self-awareness and connection with our bodies to navigate emotions and food coping mechanisms effectively. In this conversation, Stephanie Mara and Kylie discuss the importance of co-regulation and self-compassion in navigating emotional challenges, particularly in relation to somatic practices and eating behaviors. They explore the misinterpretation of somatics in popular culture, the significance of understanding one's body, and the need for compassionate self-care, especially during the holiday season. The discussion also addresses concerns about weight gain and the emotional connections tied to body image, emphasizing the importance of meeting oneself with kindness and understanding. Takeaways: Emotional eating is not inherently bad; it's a coping mechanism. Binge eating can be a protective response to trauma. Nervous system regulation is crucial for emotional well-being. Intuitive eating may not work for everyone, especially under stress. Chronic emotional eating indicates a deeper issue. Self-kindness is essential in the journey of understanding food relationships. Building resilience helps in navigating food choices during stress. Learning to check in with your body is a practice. Food coping mechanisms can be intuitive responses to feeling unsafe. Connection with oneself is key to emotional regulation. Co-regulation with others can help us process emotions. Self-validation is a powerful tool for emotional health. Somatic practices should not be seen as a quick fix. Compassionate self-care is essential during challenging times. Understanding our body's responses is key to healing. Weight concerns are often tied to deeper emotional issues. It's important to meet ourselves with kindness after coping mechanisms. Familiar environments can trigger past trauma responses. Shifting focus can help navigate overwhelming situations. Building awareness around body image can foster self-acceptance. Do you notice the calories on a menu? Do you have food rules for yourself? Time to release the restriction! This week Jenn and her guest Paige Harris are talking through how to navigate leaving restrictions behind and healing your relationship with food. Tune in to learn more! This week, Jenn is talking with trainer and holistic health coach, Paige Harris. After going through her own struggles of restrictive eating, binge eating, and an unhealthy relationship with food, Paige was able to learn to eat for her body and now helps others heal their relationship with food. During this episode, Paige talks about calming the chatter in your mind, uncovering the root cause of your thoughts, and how to manage expectations of ourselves as we progress. This is such a great episode with tangible tips and takeaways so you can start developing a healthier relationship with food. Tune in to learn more! The Salad With a Side of Fries podcast is hosted by Jenn Trepeck, discussing wellness and weight loss for real life, clearing up the myths, misinformation, bad science & marketing surrounding our nutrition knowledge and the food industry. Let's dive into wellness and weight loss for real life, including drinking, eating out, and skipping the grocery store. IN THIS EPISODE: [5:16] What led Paige to become a trainer and a holistic health coach? [14:51] How can people identify if they fall into restrictive eating?[19:29] What can we be influenced by when it comes to our habits?[21:32] How can you calm the chatter in your mind and start healing food restriction? [28:00] Where can you start with unlearning the restriction habits? [32:53] How did Paige sit through the discomfort of releasing control around others cooking her food? [34:53] How do you get to the root cause of your thoughts? [37:26] How do you know if gut discomfort is a result of your digestive system or if it's anxiety around food? [40:08] What is Paige's recommendation for progress and then regress? KEY TAKEAWAYS: To come away from restriction, start by adding a little extra of the food that you typically eat so that your body can adjust and your mind can release the anxiety that comes with change. It's ok to not be perfect, you may regress to past habits, but keep going. Be consistent and remember that the next day is a new day. Be aware that you will have ups and downs on this journey. Get comfortable with the uncomfortable as you reintroduce foods. Evaluate your thoughts, ask yourself why certain things are affecting you, and take small steps! QUOTES: [16:29] “I didn't feel hungry, I didn't even like the taste of the food by the time I got to the end of it. It was just like, I needed to compulsively do that. In reality, it's because my body was starving for food and it was going to get it anyway that it needed to. I think for a lot of people, they'll see these things and then have a binge episode and go, oh my god, see, I don't have any control over myself, so I have to restrict even harder.” - Paige Harris[22:37] “Learn to sit in discomfort. It absolutely sucks because this little voice inside of me is saying I need to eat XYZ, and I'm going against that, and now I have to sit with the fact that these little voices inside my head are calling me a bad person, you don't have any willpower, how dare you do something like that to me. But really from a logical standpoint, you should have eaten that full meal of protein and carbs, fats, and veggies because you needed it.” - Paige Harris[39:29] “A lot of times when you start to reintroduce things, the gut bacteria start to come back, the digestive enzymes start to come back, and it actually is easier for you to digest the second, third, fourth, fifth, etc. time than it was the first time. So counting something out the first time, probably not your best idea.” - Paige Harris"Consider if your personal rules are truly serving you and perhaps it's time to release the restriction for truly holistic health." - Jenn TrepeckRESOURCES:Become A Member of Salad with a Side of FriesJenn's Free Menu PlanA Salad With a Side of FriesA Salad With A Side Of Fries MerchA Salad With a Side of Fries InstagramGUEST RESOURCESImperfectly Paige Wellness WebsiteImperfectly Paige Wellness InstagramImperfectly Paige Wellness TikTokPaige Talks Wellness Podcast - SpotifyPaige Talks Wellness Podcast - AppleGUEST BIOPaige Harris is a personal trainer and holistic health coach with her Master's of Science in Human Nutrition & Functional Medicine from the University of Western States. She specializes in helping women release restrictive dieting mindsets so they can optimize their health and heal their guts, hormones, and relationships with themselves and their bodies.Paige is also the host of the Paige Talks Wellness Podcast, where listeners learn how to take control of their health in a world of information overload. In this inaugural episode, we set the stage for a season of deep dives into some big food themes, starting with relationality and how the multiple, overlapping ways in which we interact with food make it the most complex and delightful relationship that any of us participates in. The show kicks off with a couple of examples of complexity, one musical, one edible. That leads into a conversation with the philosopher of food, Lisa Heldke, who explains why philosophy is like plumbing—an infrastructure that sits behind the walls of our day-to-day experiences, provides critical services to keep things going, and hopefully doesn't spring a leak at crucial moments. We then hear from Taylor Cocalis Suarez, a food entrepreneur who blends theory and practice to slowly but surely change the culture of labour. The show wraps up with David and his partner, Maxime, tasting something really awful (a bit of banana), and a poetic and multilingual response to the MMI Food Questionnaire by composer-conductor, Sandeep Bhagwati.Guests:Lisa Heldke is a pragmatist feminist philosopher of food who teaches at Gustavus Adolphus College, a small liberal arts college in St. Peter, Minnesota. She's the author or co-editor of several books on food, including Philosophers at Table: On Food and Being Human, and Exotic Appetites: Ruminations of a Food Adventurer. In her dreams, she is a world-class bread baker, while in reality she's merely decent. In the summer she lives in a yurt on the coast of Maine. In the winter, she skijors with her husky every chance she gets.Taylor Cocalis lives near Hudson, NY where she spends her time connecting with humans and the natural world. She divides her time among the Suarez Family Brewery (which she runs with her significant other Dan Suarez), the job search community Good Food Jobs (which she shapes with her partner and friend Dorothy Neagle), cooking with her kids Mira and Enzo, and tending to the garden. Sandeep Bhagwati is a professor in the Department of Music at Concordia University in Montreal. He is an award-winning composer, theatre director, and media artist, and his compositions and comprovisations in all genres (including six operas) have been performed by leading performers at leading venues and festivals worldwide. He founded and currently directs matralab, a research/creation center for intercultural and interdisciplinary arts.Host/Producer: David SzantoMusic: Story Mode@makingamealpodcastmakingamealofit.com
Acacia, Lauren, and Sabrina talk about how their nutrition, goals, and relationships with food and their bodies have changed with time. They talk about their upbringings, when they became "food aware", when they were first exposed to diet culture, different diets that have come and gone over the years, and how they have achieved more peace with food and their bodies each year they grow wiser.
I can't wait for you to hear this conversation with a graduated client who is thriving now and keeping the 25lbs she lost off and she's been able to do that with her mindset. Kat Glover is a past client and worked with our Coach Kat. Kat worked with us for about a year and a half and she graduated from our Forever Fit program last May. She was an incredible client and made incredible physical progress, but the real star of the show was her mindset growth and her improvements in relationship with food/exercise. She has done a phenomenal job maintaining her results too! When Kat first came to us for coaching, she was doing all the “right” things on paper. She was no stranger to being active. She was a competitive swimmer growing up, started running marathons after college and even completed her first Ironman that year. Kat was frustrated she had the foundational knowledge from her nutrition degree but still couldn't figure out what to do to get the physical results she wanted. She did weight watchers for a short period of time- but it created more of that good/bad food mentality. Despite being very active and eating “healthy”, she got to her highest weight. Kat was tired of being stuck in a cycle of viewing food as “good” or “bad” and not feeling confident when she looked in the mirror. Kat knew there was a piece of the puzzle she was missing and that's why she came to us. During her first three months, Kat: -Went through our Flexible Reverse Dieting System -Increased her calories by nearly 400 per day -Slowly started introducing previously “off limits” foods -Was doing less cardio and only resistance training 3 days per week -Focused more on sleep and stress management During those 3 months, Kat: -Noticed clothes were fitting better -Saw more muscle definition -Consistently set PRs in the gym -Got more comfortable visualizing portion sizes -Felt confident practicing intuitive eating -Completely transformed her mindset around nutrition and exercise Ultimately, she felt more freedom when it came to eating and moving her body! After that she continued into our Forever Fit program, and lost 25lbs while eating more and running less. During the time she was a client, she made a huge move to NYC! While she was adjusting to her new life in a brand new city, she gave herself more opportunities to practice intuitive eating. Kat spent the first year of coaching building her foundation with tracking, and because of that, she was able to feel empowered to confidently navigate her nutrition goals without having to rely on tracking in MFP! She has come so far along with her relationship with food, moving away from the all or nothing mindset, and finding her version of balance! Now, whether she is tracking or not, she feels confident in her ability to make intentional nutrition decisions and she notices she naturally gravitates towards staying hydrated, prioritizing protein, adding a fruit or vegetable, and listening to her hunger and fullness cues! Listen in as we talk about her experience, some initial hesitations as she started with the program, non-scale victories, moving to NYC and her food relationships, and more! I sat down with Dr. Michelle Tubman, practicing physician and health coach, to dismantle societal myths surrounding women's bodies and health. I had to ask because of outdated science I was operating from: do larger body sizes inherently equate to poor health?Spoiler alert: they don't. We went on to discuss how cultural pressures can distort self-perception and how painful this is for millions of men, women, and children. This is not to say that some people who are obese will suffer from heart disease, diabetes, and other common lifestyle diseases. But many thin people will too! Here are the highlightsDr. Tubman's Personal Story. Her journey from struggling with her own body image to empowering others as a physician and coach. Michelle shared a raw story that was a pivot point for her and started her on a path to healing her self image and her life.2. Medical Bias & Training Gaps. Discussion on how medical professionals may inadvertently perpetuate size bias due to lack of training in nutrition and lifestyle medicine.3. Health Beyond Weight Loss. Exploring holistic approaches for appreciating one's body without focusing on weight loss or dieting.4.Semaglutide Concerns. Potential side effects, muscle mass loss implications, short-term studies funded by drug companies, rebound weight gain after discontinuation, and overall efficacy concerns are examined.5. Gratitude Practice for Body Acceptance. Emphasizing small acts of gratitude toward one's body as a step towards acceptance rather than immediate love.6. Food Relationships & Mindful Choices. Encouraging listeners to consider if food choices will nourish or punish them while also being mindful about future well-being post-consumption.Her website is here. His formula for success involves properly educating individuals, developing a plan based on their specific preferences, and leading clients down the road to long-term, sustainable success. In our conversation we discuss: What reverse dieting is, why it is important especially for women who may have a history of dieting or under eating, and why his clients find so much success with this program The metabolic science behind eating enough, balancing macros, and increasing calories slowly and surely rather than drastically all at once. Why macro balancing trumps calorie counting, and why you shouldn't fear carbs HIs thoughts on intermittent fasting, fasted workouts, and how you need to experiment to figure out what works best for you The freedom that can be found with improving your relationship with food and getting out of the mindsets of dieting and restriction. I have the pleasure of speaking with Leslie Schilling, a Registered Nutritionist and Dietitian and therapist, and the author of "Feed Your Self." Leslie's expertise lies in helping individuals foster a healthy relationship with food and their bodies, she focuses on teaching teens and adults how to be healthy and whole in a culture impacted by harmful diet culture norms. As parents, it can be challenging to navigate discussions about body image with our teenage children. Leslie provides valuable advice on initiating open and empathetic conversations about body image and self-esteem. With her guidance, we explore strategies to foster healthy habits without resorting to restrictive diets and instead focus on balanced nutrition and enjoying food while listening to our bodies' needs. During our conversation, we delve into the pervasive influence of diet culture, which has infiltrated various aspects of our lives and left a negative impact on body image and self-esteem for many individuals. Leslie shares valuable insights on how this culture affects both adults and children and contributes to harmful perceptions of food and body image and how we can break this cycle. A central theme of our discussion revolves around nurturing a positive relationship with food and bodies. Leslie emphasizes the importance of viewing food as neutral, neither good nor bad, in order to encourage a healthy approach to eating. By promoting body positivity and self-acceptance, Leslie sheds light on the significance of creating a foundation for overall well-being. Overtrained. Under fed. Burnt out. Tired. Disconnected. Confused. Overwhelmed. Those are just a few words to describe what we feel when we get caught up in training too hard, training too often, not eating enough, weighing and measuring every single meal and counting every single calorie trying to chase the perfect body (which doesn't exist). It's just one huge mind f*@k. These obsessions has us looking for physical and aesthetic flaws that may or may not exist. These obsessions disconnect us from ourselves and our loved ones. Over time, we may end up with body dysmorphia (obsessively focusing on a flaw in appearance) which can create unhealthy relationships with food and people. Let's just be mindful with who or what is influencing us to chase something that doesn't exist. And let us not deprive ourselves of the foods and things we enjoy. Consume responsibly. Train smart. Eat smart. Train the Body. Train the Mind. Peace. Do you have body dysmorphia? Take the test. Thanks for listening to another episode of The Women's Fittest Podcast! This is episode #148 Recipe for fitness! “There's so much ‘information' out there I don't know where to start!! I just wanna get toned and lose weight, so what do I need to do?! How much protein should I eat? Should I do keto or intermittent fasting to lose weight? How much cardio should I do?” In this episode I cover some of the most commonly asked introductory fitness/nutrition questions I get asked regularly by people sick of spinning their wheels with fat loss, diet, exercise etc. Maybe you're just beginning your fitness journey. Maybe you know someone who is and could benefit from this episode. Maybe you need a refresher or to update your bank of health info. Maybe you're a coach or fitness guru and you could utilize the info in this episode to better help and communicate with your clients. If you fall under this umbrella, this one is for you. Topics covered: Combatting Seasonal affective disorder (just a note bc it's that time of year)Be curious, passionate, problem solvers for yourself (encouragement) If your “information” is confusing or contradicting: Check who you're following and getting “info” from. Are they experienced with self & others, educated, and evidence-based? Pass on “influencers”. (Sorry not sorry)Overview on training and exercise: sets, reps, splits, pushing to failure, exercise selection, exercise order, and benefits of weight training to build muscle Don't use exercise to burn calories or create a calorie deficit (there's better easier ways) That's not what it's for. Using step counts to measure N.E.A.T. and when & why to add cardio. Prioritizing proteinImportance of fatsAre carbs bad?Dehydration kills your workouts and bodily functioning so how much water do I have to drink ? Get your a$$ outdoors. Touch nature. Absorb sunlight! Can stress be managed? If so, how?How important is sleep and sleep hygiene?Self compassion Can I drink alcohol and lose body fat? We're talking junk food relationships. Relationships that are easy to get, but end up hurting you more than helping you. ...
In today's world there are tons of FITNESS programs out there to choose from, but it can be intimidating if you don't currently work out or have a fitness ROUTINE like running, spin class, or CrossFit but this is your opportunity to reignite your motivation, discipline, and to take your personal POWER back! The NUMBER 1 place you are going to make the biggest difference in your health and wellness is in the KITCHEN. I can tell you as a former chef who oversaw multiple kitchens in hotels, resorts, corporations and sports arenas that what you CONSUME physically, mentally, and emotionally has a direct impact on your overall health. There was period of in my life when I would eat a tube of chocolate chip cookies in one sitting, and I wouldn't think twice about it until I started having different types of health issues that led me to start QUESTIONING what was going on. Am I getting old? Is this my new way of living? How did I get here? Is there anything I can do to CHANGE this? Why do I feel sad, angry, frustrated, and depressed all the time? These thoughts, feelings, and emotions were the CATALYST in my own life that PROPELLED me into a new way of living....for a while. When you try to do too many new things at one time it is easy to become OVERWHELMED. When you become overwhelmed you go right back to the HABITS and EMOTIONS that keep you feeling STUCK because they are the most FAMILIAR. You may find yourself doing really well on a diet plan but two weeks in you have a semi-significant life event that totally derails your progress, and this is when the negative self-talk starts. It happened again, I never finish anything, I can't do this, this is too hard, or the most difficult to overcome, "I give up!" This is why it's important to start slow and build on your new HABITS. As you CREATE and CELEBRATE your small WINS each day you become more confident, capable, and believe that you can ACCOMPLISH whatever your next goal is. You are now developing RESILIENCE and EMOTIONAL FORTITUDE in the face of doing hard things! CONGRATULATIONS! Right now, is a great OPPORTUNITY to take an inventory of your cabinets. With your current KNOWLEDGE and experience what type of foods do you think are problematic for you? If you are unsure, take a week or two and write down everything that you eat in a day to include your portion size. This will help create AWARENESS around what type of food you eat but I also want you to write down what you are FEELING in that moment. I know exactly what I was FEELING and what I was going through when I turned to the tube of cookies but more on FOOD RELATIONSHIPS later in the program. A great way to START back into a fitness routine is by walking! I know it sounds stupid simple because it is. You don't have to buy any equipment except a solid pair of shoes, and you are on your way. Eventually you will start doing research on zero platform shoe and the benefits of spending more time BAREFOOT. That is definitely worth a Google search! For now, let's focus on the basics and WALK it out!

Katie Brown remembers growing up with a healthy mindset around food. While it was a big part of her upbringing, it was never overly talked about, just something that was shared. Her mom was a really good cook, creating homemade meals. Her brother was a chef. It was something to be enjoyed. In college (like many of us), she gained weight. Without a fundamental understanding for nutrition, she spent years in a weight loss/gain cycle. Her weekends were spent eating and drinking, and then she would restrict Monday through Friday. She finally reached a breaking point, making the connection between what she ate and how she felt. After establishing a motivating factor of wanting to feel better, she began to make changes in her diet. She created her Instagram account @realfoodwithgratitude to share everything she was learning about the power of eating real food. Additionally, as she was improving (or rather getting back to) her relationship with food, she felt compelled to make that a part of her message as well. In our conversation, we discuss how food blogging has impacted not only what she eats, but how she eats. How releasing the fear around food has been a game changer, and getting back to basics with cooking led her to more enjoyment for what she was eating. How fitness plays a role in her relationship with her body, and how both encourage her to stay consistent. Lastly, we touch on her relationship to alcohol, and how that has changed for the better as well.
