Yaffan muusikkoura lähti käyntiin kun hän neljätoistavuotiaana alkoi soittamaan eri bändeissä Helsingin Lepakkoluolassa, ja hän oli vielä 16-vuotiaana koulussa, kun hänet värvattiin Pelle Miljoonan orkesteriin, jossa hän myös tapasi rakkaan ystävänsä Andy McCoyn. Ja loppuhan onkin musiikkihistoriaa: Yaffa ja McCoy kun jättivät samanaikaisesti Pelle Miljoonan ja alkoivatkin soittaa Hanoi Rocksissa. Sami Yaffa, joka on asunut Yhdysvalloissa 90-luvun alusta saakka on myös ehtinyt soittaa muunmuassa Joan Jettin ja Jesse Malinin kanssa.
