Turning 40 and Finding Connection Through 50 Fun Things™Teresa Thomas got divorced at 45 and had a midlife crisis as she neared 50. She felt burned out and had a bad attitude about her upcoming birthday. Despite that, she planned a birthday party for herself around things she thought would be fun. She developed worksheets for her friends and family to fill out. One of which was 50 things she wanted to do in the coming year and left room for people to say which ones they wanted to join her for. All of a sudden, she felt connected and supported and the anxiety and depression she had been feeling lifted and she had things to look forward to all year long.Guest BioAs an award-winning connector, presenter, networking expert and author, Teresa Thomas ignites intentional, connected and joy-filled living through her umbrella brand Win/Win Connects. Teresa developed the 50 Fun Things® tools and experiences as a way for groups and individuals to look at how they can add fun and fulfillment as integral pieces in their lives, leveraging joy on a personal and professional level. Teresa is the author of Win/Win Networking: Your Guidebook for Confident and Effective Connections and 50 Fun Things: Enjoy the Small Things (and more recently 50 Fun Things for a Writer's World). She has led, facilitated, and presented for hundreds of events and groups for over 20 years guiding thousands to connect and grow.Teresa was awarded the title of Women's Business Champion in 2019 by the SBA (Small Business Administration of Minnesota) for her commitment to helping others succeed through networking. She was named Dynamic Connector and recognized by AARP of Minnesota and Pollen as one of Minnesota's 2019 50 Over 50 Exceptional Leaders.Turning 40 and Finding Connection Through 50 Fun Things™Teresa Thomas was a model people pleaser, doing things for everyone else saying yes to things she didn't want to say yes to but didn't feel like she could say no to, putting other people first and finding ways to make other people happy and get along. She says that her fear of disappointing people was bigger than her fear of dying or public speaking. She now realizes that it's a bit of a self-absorbed point of view because we have no control over what other people think of us. Now she knows it's better to live as her best self and have the right people appreciate and show up for her versus trying to be something that she thinks they think they want her to be. As the mom to small kids, there is some element of putting others in front of yourself, but Teresa realized that something was out of whack. Like the day she showed up to her first neighborhood association meeting and was drafted to be treasurer, despite her protestations that she was no good with numbers. But she didn't want to disappoint these people (who she didn't even know!) so she took on the role - and she hated it and had to force herself to do it. Even friends and work colleagues would give her feedback on her people pleasing tendencies. At the same time as she was giving presentations on win-win networking, she was not allowing others to help her. One person was very pointed with Teresa and told her that the relationship didn't feel reciprocal and, if she valued authenticity and meaningful connections then receiving is part of relationship building as much as helping others is. That was a lesson that took her a long time to fully absorb. On the home front, Teresa thought things were going ok, but she was going to marriage counseling by herself, and doing the counseling homework by herself, and realizing that things at home weren't feeling particularly reciprocal. Teresa got divorced at 45 and then had a midlife crisis as she prepared to turn 50. She felt burned out and had a bad attitude about her upcoming birthday. She was reacting badly to people saying that, at 50,...

Small business is the backbone of the United States. Without ambitious entrepreneurs starting small businesses, the economy would take a huge hit.At some point, for many business owners, there comes a time when someone offers to buy the business. But, where do these people find the funding to buy a business? On today's episode, Jason and Ron from Websiteclosers.com, talk with expert Stephen Speer – the founder of eCommerce Lending Inc. – about SBA loans, how buyers acquire them, and what myths and misconceptions there are around SBA loans.[01:15] What is an SBA loan?SBA – Small Business Administration – is a department within the Federal Government; The Federal Government, through SBA, offers 75% of the loan, to banks that lend money to small businesses; There are several types of SBA loans, but the only one available for business acquisitions is called, “The 7(a) Loan”, which comes with a specific set of rules; It could be one business or 50 businesses – you're allowed up to $5 million balance of SBA loans.[02:50] The advantages of the SBA process:For a seller, the SBA process is really important because they can get 85-90% of the entire deal in cash at closing; The buyer gets an entire decade to pay back a loan, through the cash flow of a business; The interest rates for SBA loans are reasonable and much lower than what you might see if you're trying to get a commercial or a personal loan; There's a lot larger buyer pool that can afford to get into an SBA loan because the down payment is so low.[05:37] Who are SBA loans built for? They're built for small business owners and in the business acquisition world, they're built for buyers of businesses;Loans up to $5 million pretty much cover any need for any small business owner –for example, real estate loans, business acquisition loans, equipment loans, etc.[06:22] What sets eCommerce Lending apart from other sources? They're not a bank, meaning they're not lending their own money; They are facilitating transactions with their lending partners; They put together the structure of the deal and work from start to finish with their buyers;Their value is their expertise and the fact that they are very flexible. For example, if a lending partner doesn't like a deal, they're able to switch gears without restarting the process, and offer it to another one of their lending partners very quickly; They collect every bit of documentation required and ask as many questions as possible before the loan goes into underwriting; If there are weaknesses in the deal, they address them up front, because the underwriter is going to ask the same questions.[09:25] A piece of advice from Stephen to anyone interested in buying a business with an SBA loan:It's imperative for any buyer out there, to get pre-qualified before beginning their search. At eCommerce Lending, they offer their time, free of charge, to speak with buyers.Resources:websiteclosers.comeCommerce Lending Inc. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Adam Andrzekewski of OpentheBooks.com shows how the SBA (Small Business Administration) is becoming the Big Business Admin or the Swamp Business Administration. They're making billions in loans to Beverly Hills billionaires and country clubs. They're financing high end jewelry stores that sell rolexes to the wealthy. For some reason, this seems like a perversion of the SBA's role to help small businesses get financed and grow. And the default rate is through the roof. This can't continue on.

Dr. Deborah Ferber teaches courses on entrepreneurship as a member of Brandman University's School of Business and Professional Studies faculty. She is also an entrepreneur, an investor through Tech Coast Angels and a valued source of help for students at Brandman and other universities. Earlier episodes of Brandman Speaks can be found at brandmannews.org/podcast or on iTunes. Transcript Welcome to Brandman Speaks. I’m Cindy O’Dell, communications manager at Brandman University. Today I’m speaking with Dr. Deborah Ferber. Dr. Deb, as she likes to be called, is an assistant professor of Business and Organizational Leadership in the School of Business and Professional Studies with experience in international business as well as in building and teaching business courses. In your Brandman bio, you call yourself an entrepreneur and intrepreneur. Tell me what you mean by both of those terms. Dr. Deborah Ferber: Well this is great, we have a radio show at Brandman University. This is wonderful. The difference between an entrepreneur and intrepreneur. The intrepreneur is the individual who is very innovative in an internal environment, such as an organizational structure. An example would be Art Frye from 3M who invented the Post It Note. And the entrepreneur which everyone is very familiar with is the risk-takers who go out and forge their own way to start their own endeavors. You’re going to be talking to the Young Professionals Leadership Summit on Oct. 30 in Irvine about thinking like an entrepreneur. What does it mean to think like an entrepreneur? Ferber: I think we learned some very valuable lessons with this last economic downturn we just had and that is we constantly have to reinvent ourselves and we see that with our students here at Brandman University. We have professionals who are already business leaders but they’re constantly building their skill sets. So the presentation is really geared toward telling people that they need to reinvent themselves and be entrepreneurial in their own business environment or go out and forge their own way by starting their own organization. You help Brandman students and others prepare for presentations with Tech Coast Angels. Tell me about your relationship with Tech Coast Angels. Ferber: Oh my goodness, they’re the most wonderful group. So they’re truly the catalyst for the economy. They’re what we refer to as the 1 percent that really gives back to the economy. They invest, not just in the stock market by buying mutual funds, but they actually go out an invest in companies and build ideas and organizations so we can hire people. I’m happy to say that last year we did about $36 million in funding and we hope to double that again this year. And your role? You’re on the board? Ferber: I’m also an investor in Tech Coast Angels, so I also invest in companies and I just did one recently, one of the Chapman Alumni groups I hope we’ll talk about and then I also review business plans and bring in companies that I think might be a good investment and a great way to grow the Orange County economy. I know you help students. You mentioned Chapman students and I think you’ve helped Brandman students as well. How do you prepare them for a meeting with potential investors? Ferber: At Brandman, I’m really pleased, I’m teaching several entrepreneurial courses so students are already targeting me and looking to take courses with me to build a business plan. And then I would say out of every 20 business plans, we filter them down to ones that are really looking for funding and then I do the introductions and sometimes that can be anything from an SBA (Small Business Administration) loan to a microloan. And then the TCA (Tech Coast Angels) is usually up to a minimum of a half a million dollars, so we see a lot of small business owners, especially here at Brandman, first looking for the micro and then pursuing the TCA loan.
