"Why fly fourteen hours from New York to Johannesburg to see a South African version of Brooklyn? To me, the only reason to know what destinations are 'hot' is to avoid them." —Seth Kugel In this episode of Deviate, Rolf and Seth talk about how the travel industry both helps and hinders the travel experience, and how Seth first experienced travel when he was young (1:30); tourist desire, the "beaten path," and the contradictions of what travelers seek in AirBnbs and related property-renting services (10:30); dealing with language barriers overseas, and social versus literal risks overseas (20:00); balancing general tourist advice versus nuanced insights as a travel writer, and the role new technologies play in travel decisions (27:00); and why it's a good idea to avoid places that have been deemed "trendy," and how to break out of the bad habits of travel (40:30). Seth Kugel (@sethkugel) is a travel writer, freelance journalist, and host of the Amigo Gringo YouTube channel. He was the Frugal Traveler columnist for the New York Times from 2010 to 2016, and he is most recently the author of the book Rediscovering Travel: A Guide for the Globally Curious. You can't flip through a magazine or scroll social media today without being confronted with a list: "10 places to see before you die!", "15 secret vacation destinations," "5 beaches that will blow your mind." But what's in a list? In 2015. Christine Sarkis, a Smarter Travel staff writer, said she'd rather ditch the bucket list. "A travel list isn't like a grocery list, it's not a 'sit down and get it done' thing," Sarkis told MPR News host Kerri Miller. "It's a constant, evolving process." Seth Kugel, travel columnist for The New York Times, agreed. "The idea of having a list is great, but what goes on that list, maybe we should change that: It should be experiences instead of places," Kugel said. This is a encouraging and fun deep track from our archives, which will hopefully put you in the mood for this Friday's Big Books and Bold Ideas show. It's a conversation with novelist Ann Hood about her new memoir, “Fly Girl,” which chronicles her experiences as a flight attendant during a more glamorous, and sexist, era. Guests: A longtime travel writer and editor, Christine Sarkis is the executive editor and cofounder of Family Vacationist. Seth Kugel is a columnist for the travel desk of The New York Times. Have you ever came upon something while traveling that sparked a fire within you and pushed you to make change? For the past 6 months, Robbie, Ivo, Jasper & Josh have created adventure videos in Kenya for their YouTube channel, and it quickly became apparent that the loss of tourism, due to Covid-19, is hurting parks and conservancies throughout Africa. After interviewing rangers and uncovering the truth about reduced salaries and increased workload, the group of creators knew they had to take action. If you want to know exactly how 4 young YouTubers decided to journey from Kenya to Cape Town in nothing but 2 tuk-tuks, all in the name of conservation, then you do not want to miss this week's episode! Seth Kugel is the travel writer for the New York Times. He has the job so many people want— travel around the world and get paid for it. He wrote the New York Times Frugal Traveler column for 6 years and has published the book, “Rediscovering Travel: A Guide for the Globally Curious.” He has the job so many people dream of, but he didn’t actually plan on becoming a travel writer or even a journalist. His first job out of college was a third-grade bilingual teacher in the Bronx in NYC. After getting his masters degree, he then worked in an immigrant services project for the City of New York. After being encouraged by a college friend, he took a writing class, which led to him becoming a freelance writer for the New York Times and then a travel writer. He shares how he turned his hobbies into his job, such as learning new languages and traveling, and the unusual and kind of crazy ways he learned Portuguese and Spanish. Another fun fact about Seth is that he is also a Youtube star. He has two Youtube channels, Globally Curios and Amigo Gringo in Portuguese. Amigo Gringo has almost 500,000 subscribers and he has been on every late night talk show in Brazil. He is a celebrity there— people recognized him on the street and ask him for his autograph and pictures. He has achieved his life long dream of becoming famous in another country! Caroline and I had our first glimpse into what the travel industry is like when you pile everyone into a travel show and begin to see how one riverboat cruise starts to look just like the other cruise across the aisle. While we learned a lot of what not to do while at the show, we did learn a lot of incredibly valuable bits from various speakers and panels and share that in this episode.

Seth Kugel, journalist and travel writer, is affectionately known by readers of the New York Times and his other fans as The Frugal Traveller. He has hot tips on how to travel on a budget and how to decide what really matters.
Seth pens the Frugal Traveler column for the New York Times. A graduate of Yale and Harvard's Kennedy School of Government, Seth began freelancing for the Times while working for the city of New York. He eventually gave up his day job to devote himself full time to writing for the Times where he covered the Bronx, wrote the Weekend in New York column in the Travel section, and ultimately took over the Frugal Traveler column in June 2010. Along the way, Seth co-authored "Nueva York: The Complete Guide to Latino Life in the Five Boroughs", contributed to Time Out New York, Wallpaper, Conde Nast Traveler, Food & Wine and the Washington Post. He also taught a journalism course at New York University School of Continuing and Professional Studies. In October 2014, Seth will be debuting a “how to” video series in Portuguese, for Brazilians visiting New York City.
We commemorate the early days of the Peace Corps with travel writer Paul Theroux, who served as a teacher in Africa in 1963. He'll also share his perspective on when foreign aid does and does not work. Also, Seth Kugel shares highlights from his inaugural trip as the Frugal Traveler for the New York Times when he spent 13 weeks on a budget to see the sights from Brazil to New York by way of Bolivia, Colombia, Guatemala and Nicaragua.
