EXPLICIT LANGUAGE WARNINGWelcome back to another fiery episode of History Rage! This week, host Paul Bavill is joined by history teacher and author Shalina Patel to delve into the often misunderstood world of Edwardian politics. Together, they tackle the myths surrounding the suffragette movement and the contributions of the Pankhursts.Debunking the Pankhurst Myth: Shalina passionately argues against the belief that the Pankhursts single-handedly won women the right to vote. She highlights the contributions of other organisations and individuals, including the suffragists, working-class women, and even men who supported women's suffrage. The Diverse Suffrage Movement:The NUWSS and WSPU: The peaceful suffragists led by Millicent Fawcett versus the militant suffragettes led by the Pankhursts.Regional and Religious Groups: From the Birmingham National Society for Women's Suffrage to the Jewish League for Women's Suffrage.Specialised Groups: The Women's Tax Resistance League, the Young Hot Bloods, and the Actresses' Franchise League.Working-Class Suffragettes: Shalina sheds light on the often overlooked contributions of working-class women like Selena Martin and Kitty Marion, who faced harsher treatment in prison compared to their middle-class counterparts. The Role of Men: Men also played a crucial role in the suffrage movement, with groups like the Men's Political Union for Women's Enfranchisement using their influence to support the cause.Guest Information:Get Shalina's book "The History Lessons" through the History Rage Bookshop or on Amazon.Follow Shalina on Twitter: @MS_PatelHistory.Join the conversation and share your historical vexations on Twitter @HistoryRage or with Paul Bavill @PaulBavill. How to overcome fatherlessness Shalina was just 15 months old when her father left. And that moment changed her life forever. Shalina was now fatherless. And that was heartbreaking and traumatic and overwhelming. It changed what she believed about herself. She felt deeply abandoned, worthless and disconnected from so many things. And the same questions continued to haunt Shalina throughout her life... Why did he leave me? Why didn't he choose to stay? Did I do something wrong? Shalina has come so far since those younger struggles, but the hurt is palpable and real and raw. Shalina works as a dog trainer in Toronto, Canada. After completing the intensive internship program at When Hounds Fly, she then earned her CPDT-KA certification. Although her love of dogs began in childhood, her passion for science and psychology was born in university. After graduating with her degree in Psychology, she began to dive into animal psychology and learning theory. Keeping up with the latest "dog science" is what drives her to improve to become as effective and humane as possible. After spending some time on dog training social media, it became apparent to her how critical it was to begin tackling some of the misinformation on Instagram and TikTok. She loves creating educational content on social media to help pet parents navigate the dog training world. Online advocacy work will continue to be a huge priority for her. In this episode of Author to Author, Dr. Cynthia Toolin-Wilson interviews Shalina Stilley on her book Paradoxes of Faith and Reason (June 20, 2022)Paradox it is at the very heart of the Gospel message. The Trinity, the Incarnation, the Cross and Resurrection, and the problem of evil are but a few examples of paradoxes of faith and reason. How can God be three in one? How can God be man? How can Jesus who is “the life” die on a Cross? How can we hold that God exists and is good when there is so much suffering in the world? This book seeks to resolve questions such as these, which can cause the would-be believer to reject the faith and even the most devout of believers to stumble into perplexity.https://enroutebooksandmedia.com/paradoxes/

Back in the 1960s, Bill Strickland was a listless teenager but life as he knew it was about to change forever. One afternoon, while skipping class, something caught his eye - the door to one of the art rooms was ajar and he could hear the whirring of a potters wheel. Stopping a moment to take a look, Bill beheld a sight that would change the course of his life. At the wheel was a ceramics teacher, Mr Frank Ross, spinning a lump of clay into a beautiful bowl. He was witnessing a profound metaphor - he could make his life into something beautiful as Mr Ross made bowls from clay. Mr Ross had lit a fuse within Bill. He went onto university and eventually set up the Manchester Craftsmen's Guild, an afterschool arts programme in his neighbourhood of North Side, Pittsburgh. The programme is designed to intercept the often difficult lives of teenagers in the area, to put them on a path toward a positive future with the help of inspirational teachers. And it works. Thousands of kids come through the programme each year and Bill's work has been recognised by the White House, among others. Matthew Syed explores how teachers have the power to transform the world, one student at a time. It's a big responsibility taken seriously by the likes of history teacher Shalina Patel. Shalina goes beyond the textbooks to engage her students. Professor Sarah-Jayne Blakemore explains why adolescence is such a formative time in terms of brain development and suggests we reconsider the way we talk about and teach teenagers. Season 4 kicks off with Shalina Patel, an award-winning history teacher and co-founder of The History Corridor on Instagram. Shalina tells us about her career journey and what motivated her to become a history teacher. We talk about the tendency to be tokenistic when it comes to teaching diverse history, for example a gloss over the Windrush Generation or the glorification of the British Empire, without much reflection of the consequences of exploitation and racism. The relevance of these isolated stories is then buried within the broader curriculum. So I ask, how do we create spaces for important stories to be told, and, is the current teaching curriculum compatible with diverse storytelling? Shalina shares some advice on how teachers can embed intersectionality into their teaching curriculums and widen their pupils’ perspectives. Social media is saturated with facts, opinions, controversies and conspiracies, which can confound the truth. It might mean that children and young people are misguided about what they read and understand, which can be particularly dangerous because they lack the foresight and intuition that comes with age and experience when distinguishing fact from fiction. Within that context, we discuss how teachers can uphold integrity and objectivity when it comes to teaching history. I also ask Shalina what discovery of the past has surprised her the most, what it means to her to be a feminist, and what particular intersectional, feminist piece of history inspires her. You can follow the History Corridor on Instagram: @thehistorycorridor and you can find out more about Shalina here. On this episode, I am joined by Shalina Micheal who runs her own events business. When I first met Shalina, I instantly clicked with her and was drawn to her energy. She spoke so passionately about what she did and what she stood for and I knew that I had to have her on this podcast. Shalina has worked in the events industry for over 17 years and had a senior leadership position in the corporate world. She has faced many challenges along the way and eventually decided to leave the corporate world and start her own business doing something she loved. It was a big shift in lifestyle and mindset of which she rose to the occasion and is now running a successful company. Shalina talks to us about her story of how she got into her industry including her past experiences with education whilst growing up, the challenges she faced as an ethnic woman with her male colleagues, the struggles of starting her own business and balancing her family and career. She also throws in snippets of her travel stints which she did which you all know I'm a big fan of. I loved speaking to Shalina about her story which is just incredible.
