In the 1870s and 80s the nation was embroiled in a sensational scandal. Corrupt politicians, post office officials and others conspired to defraud the United States Post Office out of millions of dollars. It was only under the watchful eye of newly elected President James Garfield that an in-depth investigation began. My guest is Shawn Francis Peters, author of "When Bad Men Combine: The Star Route Scandal and the Twilight of Gilded Age Politics." He not only explains the graft and its consequences, but also shares his thoughts about the theory that Garfield's assassination was in fact connected to the scandal.More about the book here: https://lsupress.org/books/detail/when-bad-men-combine/If you haven't done so already, listen to my prior conversation with Shawn about Gilded-Age murderer Harry Hayward at Minnesota's Most Notorious: Where Blood Runs Cold.

Finally, I got to redeem myself after not pressing record at Reno while interviewing Shawn Francis, the founder of Team Hoot, creator of his famous pole vault vlog, and most recently the author of The Pole Vault Toolbox! If you have ever watched Shawn's vlog, you know how creative and talented he is. You also know how he is full of energy and fart jokes. It was so surprising and interesting to see the "everyday" Shawn Francis when he is off the vlog though. I saw a very laidback side of Shawn and the depth of his thought on all the aspects of his life. I have always respected Shawn and his grind, but I found a whole different level of appreciation for who he is and what he has done for the PV community after this podcast.

February 24, 2021 | Episode 27 “just two dads”, Brian Altounian & Shawn Francis are joined by special needs Warrior & then some, Susan Fink. We can't wait for you to hear her story!! Susan Fink is a marketing executive by trade, a 42 year old single mom, and and autism advocate, supporting other families who have children with autism/special needs through her podcast "Rise with the Light" and helping others push through what they are going through to reach their goals, working through their challenges as a mindset coach. She believes her purpose on Earth is to help other people, to take what she has been through, and what she has learned and worked so hard to push through, the deepest darkest times in my life, so that she could help others do the same. Her personal accomplishments stem from the work she does to help others, but she's able to do this because of what she has pushed through herself, some of the darkest times in her life, to include: - cervical cancer - brain surgery - finalizing a divorce while 8 months pregnant (Separated from her ex, moved - out of their house and two weeks later found out she was pregnant - and decided to go it alone, while working full time and with a high-risk pregnancy) an autism diagnosis for her son at the age of 3 - losing 60 pounds primarily through making huge mindset shifts (She used to be 195 pounds, and have been able to keep off the weight for 2 years) - being single, on a single income, advocating for her son and ensuring he has everything he needs to support him and his challenges The BIGGEST accomplishment for her is going through all of this and coming out stronger, with a stronger mind, heart and wholeness, grounded and able to help other people. This is her purpose. With a lack of verbal filters and a surplus of sensory irritants, there is never a dull moment in my comical household. I have surrendered and conformed to a very structured lifestyle. I am the family coach, advocate, and referee. In the words of my family, I am a thoughtful, caring person with obsessive tendencies and a love for everything cozy. It is true- I am a track-pant-wearing, bra-less preferring, medicated warrior. This is my life, my typical life in a very untypical world.” Follow and join Rebecca for a dash-cam view of some of her best (and worst) moments with some tips, tricks, experience, and products along the way.
