We bid a final farewell to 2024 with this special IndieSeen look at last year's "Most Interesting Indies"! Sujewa recently posted a list of his favorite independent movies at DIY Filmmaker, and he touches on each of them with Ian--who also throws in a couple of contenders that are worth watching. Not all of these films came out last year, but the guys watched them in 2024.Is that cheating?Maybe. But great recommendations are great recommendations!Plus: The guys say a few words in memory of filmmaker David Lynch and arthouse theatre pioneer Robert Laemmle; throw some (rhetorical) water on the California fires; and further decrease the odds of Hong Sang-soo making a guest appearance on the show!Subscribe, like, and comment on Kicking the Seat here on YouTube, and check us out at:kickseat.comXLetterboxdBlueSkyInstagramFacebookShow LinksRead the post that inspired this conversation!

For better or worse, 2024 is shaping up to be The Year of Hong Sang-Soo on IndieSeen! Ian and Sujewa take one last run at appreciating the South Korean critical darling with a look at his latest film, A Traveler's Needs.Isabelle Huppert stars as Iris, a French woman living in Seoul, whose unconventional method of teaching her language to locals has earned her a growing network of tutoring referrals. A Traveler's Needs follows for a day, as she meets with clients, explores local monuments, and tries to sort out her relationship with the young man with whom she shares an apartment. In this spoilerific discussion, the guys talk about their big-screen experiences--which is quite different from how they watched Hong's previous works, The Novelist's Film and In Front of Your Face. They also look at the filmmaker's merits; how the digital revolution created a subset of moviemaking workhorses who give short shrift to screenwriting; and discuss the future of Hong Sang-soo as a podcast subject (Hint: It's not looking good). So pour yourself some makgeolli and get ready for a conversation that's vastly more entertaining than the movie at hand!Subscribe, like, and comment on Kicking the Seat here on YouTube, and check us out at:kickseat.comXBlueSkyInstagramFacebookShow LinksWatch the A Traveler's Needs trailer.Catch up with our review of Hong Sang-soo's The Novelist's Film and In Front of Your Face. Ian and Sujewa get deja vu with Hong Sang-soo with their double-feature IndieSeen review of In Front of Your Face and The Novelist's Film! The guys had initially planned to only discuss one of the movies, but while doing some extra homework, Ian discovered that the prolific South Korean auteur had essentially made the same movie twice, within one year of each other. Hence, this bizarre journey into truly independent (and highly improvised) cinema. Both films share a high-level plot about an artist (one a retired actress, one a novelist) visiting old acquaintances and, through happenstance, getting entrenched in making a movie.Lee Hye-yeong stars in both films as the respective actress/novelist, and manages to pull off two very compelling and distinct performances. But is she underserved by a script that feels more like a list of prompts rather than the grand human-condition dramas they're billed as?In this spoilerific discussion, the guys talk about the dangers of loosey-goosey screenwriting; actor versatility; and why it's perfectly reasonable to not trust film critics (except for Ian, of course!).Subscribe, like, and comment to the Kicking the Seat YouTube channel, and check out kickseat.com for multiple movie podcasts each week!Show LinksWatch the In Front of Your Face trailer.Watch the Novelist's Film trailer.Watch Sujewa's latest film, Cosmic Disco Detective Rene for free on YouTube! Leia a crítica completa do filme aqui.

A chaque génération. Vive En Attendant Godard. Vive le cinéma.Emission dispo également on da tube.Les listes reçues :THOMAS « EL COMANDANTE »THE FABELMANS (Steven Spielberg)KILLERS OF THE FLOWER MOON (Martin Scorsese)JIGARTHANDA DOUBLE X (Karthik Subbaraj)ESTERNO NOTTE / L'ENLEVEMENT (Marco Bellochio)LE GANG DES BOIS DU TEMPLE (Rabah Ameur-Zaïmeche)LES REYES DEL MUNDO (Laura Mora Ortega)EARWIG (Lucile Hadzihalilovic)NAPOLEON (Ridley Scott)LAST STOP LARRIMAH (Thomas Tancred)DUNKI (Rajkumar Hirani)Bonus track & clip : LIPSTICK LOVER - videoclip (Janelle Monáe and Alan Ferguson)Naa Ready (dans LEO - Lokesh Kanagaraj)Mention honorable : PS 2 – PONNIYIN SELVAN – PARTIE 2 (Mani Ratman)LA TOUR (Guillaume Nicloux)LES RASCALS (Jimmy Laporal-Trésor)DERNIERE NUIT A MILAN (Andrea Di Stefano)MISANTHROPE (Damián Szifrón)LES COLONS (Felipe Galvez)Flop : Donjons et Dragons : L'Honneur des voleurs (John Francis Daley, Jonathan Goldstein)Alibi.com 2 (Philippe Lacheaux)Stars at noon (Claire Denis)PART I III D'ARTAGNAN et PART II III MILADY (Bourboulon / Seydoux / Rassam)SIMON D. « L'ANCIEN »Mes listes pour 2023, que je n'ai pas réussi à classer jusqu'au bout, en plus de ne toujours pas avoir vu Napoléon, le Miyazaki et Vincent doit mourir, mais c'est déjà ça...Top 1. Another year has wrapped production, and the production assistants are here to clean up! Just in time for the 2023 Oscars, Ben, Wilson, and Eli mop up the mess left by superheroes and conductors, stop motion shells and Na'vi, interdimensional travelers and cannibals, mourners and partiers. By breaking down the year's big trends–– directors fictionalizing their autobiographies, Marvel sinking slowly, rich filmmakers attempting to pillory wealth inequality–– the Deep Cut trio gets a handle on what made 2022 so weird. Bookwaves/Artwaves is produced and hosted by Richard Wolinsky. Links to assorted local theater & book venues   Artwaves Wil Haygood, author of Colorization: One Hundred Years of Black Films in a White World, in conversation with host Richard Wolinsky. Colorization looks at the history of Hollywood from the perspective of the African American community, from protests over the showing of the racist silent film, “Birth of a Nation,” to the first great Black director, Oscar Micheaux, through the forties and the rise of black actors such as Sidney Poitier, Harry Belafonte and Dorothy Dandridge, to so-called Blaxploitation films and up to the present, all the while putting the films in context of the larger society and race in America. In the interview, he discusses the origins of the book, the careers of some of the Black pioneers in Hollywood film, and the way television and streaming has changed the race equation in our culture. Wil Haygood is a journalist who spent several years with the Washington Post before writing a series of biographies. He is also known for an essay in the Post which became the source for the successful film, Lee Daniels' The Butler. If Isabelle Huppert is not your favorite actor, she's the favorite actor of someone you know. Guaranteed. There's something about her that is unlike any other actor that has ever been on film. But it's really hard to talk about what that “something” is. In each performance, in every film she's made, she has such a command of the character, the text, the frame, that we place her in equal authorship with the directors she's worked with, who happen to be some of most interesting and important in the last half-century—Jean Luc-Godard, Michael Haneke, Claude Chabrol, Michael Cimino, Claire Denis, Joachim Trier, Mia Hansen-Løve, Hong Sang-soo, to name a few. She always found a way to play complex, multi-dimensional, often morally questionable characters, even in a time when the female variety were in short supply. In this woefully short episode, she talks about some of the important, yet somewhat mysterious, aspects of her approach to the craft—curiosity, collaborating with the director, the present moment, listening to the language of the camera, and much more.  A retrospective of 29 of Isabelle Huppert's best films begins Friday October 7th at Film Forum in New York City.  Follow Back To One on Instagram Back To One is the in-depth, no-nonsense, actors-on-acting podcast from Filmmaker Magazine. In each episode, host Peter Rinaldi invites one working actor to do a deep dive into their unique process, psychology, and approach to the craft. No small talk, no celebrity stories, no inane banter—just the work.

In this final episode of the season, the team speaks with Ben Balcom, a local filmmaker, assistant professor at the University of Wisconsin—Milwaukee, and the co-founder and co-programmer of Microlights Cinema. The show kicks off with Lindsay, David, and Elisabeth reflecting on formative artistic influences that allowed them to see new possibilities within the mediums of film, music, and dance. Ben joins the crew around 10:30.  Since 2013, Ben has been presenting experimental films in Milwaukee through Microlights Cinema, and has recently started hosting screenings again after pausing during the pandemic. In the conversation, Ben reflects on early pivotal exposures to experimental film, including a Stan Brackidge work. The material made him understand for the first time that as a filmmaker, a film could mean “what you insist it means,” and a metaphorical light went on for him.   As a musician in his early life, Ben found a creative home in filmmaking upon realizing that many of his interests could be simultaneously served and explored through making films—where art, music, literature, and performance all come together. He discusses how creative practices, including filmmaking, might be impeded by approaching with a sense of expertise rather than an openness to explore, and willingness to “make material work.” As an instructor, he presses his students to consider working with mistakes and asks them what would it mean to make “failed” material work?   Throughout the conversation, Ben shares his thoughts about Milwaukee as a destination for the whole spectrum of filmmaking—from commercial to experimental. He laments a scarcity of funding opportunities for artists in the city, and the need for artists to commodify their practices as a means of survival. He sees the future of film production in Milwaukee flowing from the artists themselves. Rather than aiming for flashy outside production partners like Netflix, Ben feels that artists should have the freedom to pursue their projects authentically—and that if they are better supported to realize their visions independently, their work has the potential to generate powerful interest from the ground up.   Follow http://microlightscinema.org/ (Microlights) on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/microlights_cinema/ (microlights_cinema)  https://www.instagram.com/dani.and.joe/ (Dani & Jo)  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wong_Kar-wai (Wong Kar-wai)  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Cassavetes (John Cassavettes)  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terrence_Malick (Terry Malick)  https://www.google.com/search?q=josh+weissback+filmmaker&rlz=1C1GCEA_enUS993US993&sxsrf=ALiCzsYuV8JyuP1LDRa2eYEXfmvVsYpenA:1658803683288&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwjIla2ixZX5AhVkPH0KHfFJBNwQ_AUoAnoECAIQBA&biw=1536&bih=722&dpr=1.25#imgrc=d-PwqqVLMakSqM (Josh Weissbach)   https://www.hampshire.edu/academics/faculty/abraham-ravett (Abraham Ravett)  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stan_Brakhage (Stan Brackidge)  https://www.hampshire.edu/ (Hampshire College)  https://uwm.edu/arts/film/graduate/ (UWM Milwaukee Film)   https://film-makerscoop.com/filmmakers/diane-kitchen (Diane Kitchen)  https://www.stephaniebarber.com/ (Stephanie Barber)  https://www.imdb.com/name/nm1222207/ (Bill Behrens)  https://poorfarmexperiment.org/ (The Poor Farm Experiment)  https://www.thisismilwaukee.us/xavleplae (Xav Laplae)  https://gemitchell.com/ (Grace Mitchell)  https://largeprint.bandcamp.com/ (Large Print)  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mad_God (“Mad God” by Phil Tippet)  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hong_Sang-soo (Hong San-soo)  https://www.criterionchannel.com/ornette-made-in-america (Ornette Coleman) ...

A married woman visits three friends in the city, and we are inspired to consider what is the nature of happiness for women in a “man’s world.” An undesirable side-effect of watching lots of Hollywood movies is that we become used to films that try for big, splashy effects—blockbusters and self-important message films, full of noise and drama. We're not used to smaller scale modest efforts; we have trouble noticing subtlety and nuance. The films of Korean director Hong Sang-soo tend to fly under the mainstream radar. But there's hidden treasure here. His latest picture is called The Woman Who Ran. We meet Gam-hee, a married woman played by the warmly expressive Kim Min-hee. Since she got married, she's never spent a day apart from her husband, but now he's on a business trip, and she travels to Seoul to visit some old friends. Her friend Young-soon is divorced, living in an apartment complex with a roommate. They have a garden and some chickens, and Young-soon is mostly content with her life. The dinner conversation ranges widely, from the trials of getting older to philosophical subjects. At one point, the roommate describes how the rooster they have jumps on the backs of hens, pecking at them mercilessly, just to show, according to her, that he's important. This small detail is part of a larger pattern in which women acknowledge men and relationships as problematic. Gam-hee then stays with another friend in town, a Pilates instructor still trying to find her vocation in life. Their conversation is a bit more guarded, but also revealing. The friend is having an affair with a married man, a fact that emphasizes her tenuous self-image. Then, by chance, Gam-hee runs into the wife of an artist that she herself used to be with. Although the possibility of regret is in the air, the two are able to talk about their situations as grown-ups, and when the husband shows up, it's not really a surprise to find that he's kind of a clueless and self-centered guy. Hong is a master of the “ordinary.” He can take the merest wisp of a story and create a gentle naturalistic slice-of-life movie like this. His editing flow and relaxed narrative rhythm are as comfortable as a well-worn pair of sandals, and I think this opens up the possibility for viewers of insight into the characters in particular, and questions about happiness in general. What does it mean for each woman? And how is it affected by living in what we are used to calling a “man's world”? The title, The Woman Who Ran, refers apparently to someone mentioned in one of the conversations, a minor character, whom we never see, and whose actions pose a question that is never answered. Then again, I think it points obliquely to Gam-hee herself, who escapes temporarily from the security of married life to learn about herself by checking in with friends from her past. 28 feature films in 25 years. That's the astonishingly prolific career of Hong Sang-soo. He writes and directs movie like Stephen King writes books, although in all other respects their work is very different. Hong can do this because he doesn't try to please anyone but himself with his low-key, intelligent, personal dramas about people interacting with one another in ordinary settings. The relationships of men and women are always one of the subjects, painted in shades of uncertainty. The Woman Who Ran is one of his more inspired artistic efforts, direct and simple, yet thought-provoking. For Hong, and for those who enjoy his movies, less is definitely more.
