**This episode is part of a mini-series produced for the Gascoyne Catchment’s Group, who have kindly allowed me to share it with you. I hope you enjoy listening to it as much as I did making it.** In this episode, we speak to Margot Steadman. Upon finishing school, Margot had the ultimate “sliding doors moment” which led to a life she could never have imagined as a child. Raised in suburban Perth, she helped a friend apply for a Governess position on Landor Station in the Gascoyne, and thought nothing more of it. When her friend backed out of the interview on the day due to nerves, Margot stepped in so the employers wouldn’t be stood up. And then, she got the job she’d never intended to apply for. Margot ended up falling in love with the boy next door on Dalgety Downs Station, where they would spend two decades managing, then owning the property, and raising their children, before moving to Wooramel Station on the coast for another two decades. From fixing windmills to mustering sheep, cattle and goats, dealing with death (both human and animal), to droughts and floods - with a healthy dose of laughter and good times in amongst it all, there’s not much she hasn’t seen or done. Margot’s story is incredible, and a shining example of how you never know where life will take you, and that you don’t know what you’re capable of until you try. To start our conversation, I asked Margot to share the story of that fateful moment that led her to Landor StationSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This is the dilemma Beth is faced with in Broken Country, the Happy Place Book Club novel for March. In this chat Fearne and author Clare Leslie Hall talk about why first love can be so intoxicating, and why it's only human to feel the pull between very different lifestyles, knowing there are multiple ways you could be happy...Clare explains that Broken Country used to be a very different book, and she almost abandoned it entirely, so what can we learn about being patient with our creative blocks?Plus, if you ever fancy going to Dorset – where the book is set - Fearne and Clare go off on a tangent about all the best places to visit... This week, we're having a ball -- scrapping, yelling and mixing it up, loving every minute with this damn crew as we close out Gene HackMarch with a regal induction into the podcast canon. It's 2001's The Royal Tenenbaums, directed by Wes Anderson, co-written by Wes Anderson and Owen Wilson, and starring Gene Hackman, Anjelica Huston, Ben Stiller, Gwyneth Paltrow, Luke Wilson, Owen Wilson, Bill Murray, Danny Glover and the voice of Alec Baldwin. While Anderson launched himself to prominence with Rushmore, Tenenbaums marked the full-throated arrival of a confident new voice in American cinema, and arguably remains his best effort nearly two and a half decades later. Perfectly utilising Hackman's gruff hard-ass patriarcal screen presence, cut by the man's easily over-looked and ofter under-utilised comedic abilities, it's a redemption story for an almost historically bad dad -- a funny, feel-good movie that says it's never too late to make things right. Plus: Hayley's got another theatrical outing to report on as she headed to the cinema to catch Black Bag, while both hosts have food fixations on the brain this week. If you'd like to watch the movie before listening along to our discussion, The Royal Tenenbaums is currently available to stream on Disney+, as well as Crave and Starz north of the border. Other works discussed this week include Presence, Kimi, Ocean's Eleven, Enemy of the State, The Conversation, No Way Out, Dirty Dancing, Step Up, Center Stage, Stranger Than Fiction, Arrested Development, Hard Eight, Sliding Doors, The French Dispatch, The French Connection, Isle of Dogs, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, The Darjeeling Limited, The Grand Budapest Hotel, Bottle Rocket, Asteroid City and Eastbound and Down, among many more. We don't know when we'll be back or what we'll be watching, as events in Hayley's life are making recording rather difficult over the next few months. But we will return, so don't fret! We just may be going down to a bi-weekly schedule for the next little while until things blow over. And don't worry, it's nothing bad. Updates coming on our social media feeds when we have them, but until then, we'll see you at the movies!!

Making Tracks with The MOST FM: Artist Interviews

“London Buses” is the second single from Andy Bassett's Surface Noise EP. Returning to the more guitar-pop-oriented sound of his earlier work, he forgoes the orchestral arrangements featured heavily on the EP's title track and its predecessor, his 2022 album The Orchid Thief.Playing all the instruments himself, augmented by creamy smooth harmonies from fellow Taranaki singer-songwriter Liana Hart, Bassett describes a “Sliding Doors” moment, where life could have gone one of two ways, and celebrates the path he ultimately took – without revealing what that was!“It was a good gig,We had a good time,And good things Arrive in threes Like London buses”SPOILER ALERT: The specific moment – the third good thing - that inspired this song was when he asked his now-wife Sue Page on a date.“Starting out with just acoustic guitar, bass, and drums, the song opens up at the first chorus. A beautiful vocal harmony accompanies the chorus vocals, and some tasty electric guitar parts begin to complement the instrumentation. The end of the second chorus gives way to a change in feel, the chord progression and lead guitar creating a tension that resolves back into a call-and-response style rendering of the first verse, with lush vocal harmonies contributing to the beauty of the song.”– Peter K Malthus, muzic.net.nz

Welcome to The B-Side! Here we talk about movie stars! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between. Today we gush (and hush) over Gwyneth Paltrow with our past, present, and future guest Cory Everett, creator of Cinephile: A Card Game and the ever-expanding My First Movie books! Our B-Sides today are: Flesh and Bone, Hard Eight, Hush, and Sliding Doors. The main focus revolves around her banner year of 1998. Paltrow had FIVE films released in ‘98, including Shakespeare in Love, which won her an Oscar. We talk about her superb SNL opening monologue from 1999 (and her cameo in Ben Affleck's monologue the next year), her deep cultural resonance at the time (some credit her for bringing the color pink back into fashion), the films she made before and after Emma, and her waning movie star era after the year 2000. Of the nearly fifty films in which she has appeared, there have been precious few since 2010 that were not Marvel movies. There was, of course, Mortdecai. And, perhaps most famously, her lifestyle company Goop. There's Hush's infamous test screenings and wig-heavy reshoots (years later, Jessica Lange called the film “a piece of shit”), Sliding Doors' haircuts and soundtrack, and Flesh and Bone's slow-cooked, well-worn dramatics. Also mentioned is that amazing Patrick Doyle score for Great Expectations, The Film Stage's Holiday Gift Guide, And then there's Duets and Gwyneth's hit cover song “Cruisin'” with Huey Lewis. In this episode, I reflect on the complexities of wanting to change pivotal moments in my life, particularly regarding a significant decision I made in 2017. I think about whether I would go back and alter my choice to return to Orlando from Colorado, considering how that decision has shaped my current relationships and experiences. I also draw parallels to the film "Sliding Doors," which illustrates how a single decision can lead to vastly different life paths. Ultimately, while I acknowledge the temptation to rethink past choices, I emphasize the importance of accepting those decisions as part of my journey that has led me to where I am today.Takeaways:1. Reflecting on past choices can be complicated, especially when those choices have shaped who we are today. 2. Life changes often arise from hasty decisions made during moments of emotional turmoil. 3. Understanding the reasons behind our decisions helps us better comprehend our life choices. 4. Every decision, even those made hastily, contributes to the journey we are on today. Dr. Simon Rice is the Global Director of the Movember Men's Health Institute and the founder of the Young Men's Mental Health Research Program and the Elite Athlete Mental Health Research Program at Orygen, the Center for Youth Mental Health in Melbourne, Australia. He is also a Professor and Dame Kate Campbell Fellow in the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Science at the University of Melbourne.  Simon has significantly influenced the men's mental health field, beginning with his foundational research on measuring depression in men. We discussed some of his origins, and I discovered that some serendipitous but pivotal moments influenced the trajectory of his career from high school teacher to eventual leader of a global research institute. I loved learning about some of these what Simon called “sliding door” moments. We also discussed his curious approach to his work and how being curious has allowed Simon to study and research a range of different topics, including his work on athlete mental health. Finally, Simon provides some thoughts on some issues that he believes will be important for the field of men's mental health to address in order to help boys and men.

Simon Raymonde's affecting and beautifully written memoir ‘In One Ear' records life in the ‘60s growing up with a father who wrote and arranged for Dusty Springfield, Helen Shapiro and the Walker Brothers, the impossibly shy promotional activities of the Cocteau Twins and This Mortal Coil and the struggles and eventual jackpot of the Bella Union record label he founded. He's so perceptive, observant and self-mocking and we loved this energetic podcast which, among much else, lands upon …   ... why 1979 was the Golden Year. … the time Scott Walker came to his parents' house. … why the Cocteau Twins might have tanked in the current age of self-promotion. … how a loathing for Phil Collins was a Sliding Doors moment.   … the problem with bands that don't talk to each other. … why they refused to appear on Top Of The Pops. … following Rancid and the Ramones at Lollapalooza in 1996 and the sobering events that ensued. … why the Old Grey Whistle Test was “not a happy experience”. … the cryptic language of Elizabeth Fraser's lyrics why he never asked her what they meant.   … “if I hadn't worked at the Beggars record shop I wouldn't be talking to you now”. … why bands are “less naïve now”. … and “Cocteau Twins - swirling sepulchral shards of sound that patter like raindrops against the windows of your mind” – ©️ the Music Press in 1985. Order Simon's book here:https://www.amazon.co.uk/One-Ear-Cocteau-Twins-Raymonde/dp/1788709381Find out more about how to help us to keep the conversation going: https://www.patreon.com/wordinyourear Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. We are in shock that it has taken us this long to cover the cult classic that is Monty Python's Life of Brian (1979). We have Rslaugesen over on Patreon to thank for pointing out this glaring oversight.Once we got started, it was hard for us to stop talking about the Life of Brian. British comedy was a staple of our childhoods and Monty Python was one of our favourites. It was a treat to follow the development of this movie from Jesus Christ: Lust for Glory to a Sliding Doors-style story of Brian Cohen, born in the manger over from Christ. Whilst Monty Python were probably trying to make a parody of 1970s Britain rather than a historically accurate portrait of first century CE Judea, we still found this film intriguing. From wolf's nipples to imperialism, we take you through all the best Roman scenes… and perhaps a few non-Roman scenes as well. Who can resist talking about the Virgin Mandy?Part of the appeal of Life of Brian is the fact that it is not afraid to make fun of the Romans (or anyone) and shows a much less glamorous side of the empire. Quite the contrast to the epics of the 1950s and 1960s.Things to Look Out ForFar too many ‘reenactments' of our favourite momentsThe Biggus Dickus sceneWhat Have the Romans Ever Done For Us? We can spot some awkward moments in the film, but overall, we think Life of Brian stands the test of time.
