Producer and filmmaker Chadd Harbold returns to the show to discuss Terrence Malick's awe-inspiring WWII epic The Thin Red Line. The film marked Malick's return to the director's chair after a 20 year absence from filmmaking and features an ensemble cast of dozens of recognizable faces, including many massive stars of the period reduced to mere minutes of screen time and a handful of lines of dialogue. Based on the James Jones novel of the same name, the movie is unlike any war film ever made and showcases Malick venturing deeper into his style of meandering camerawork, striking images of the natural world, and contemplative monologues delivered in voiceover (occasionally by actors we seldom see onscreen). We discuss the storied, decade-long journey of getting The Thin Red Line to screen, a process that involved Malick spending heaps of cash satisfying every one of his fleeting whims and every actor in Hollywood vying for a spot on the film's massive roster characters. Then, we discuss the film's juxtaposition of horrific war imagery with breathtaking shots of wildlife and nature - a visual contrast that enhances Malick's existential preoccupations with the nature of good and evil, darkness and light in the world. Finally, we praise Malick's working method, and how his decision to "shoot everything" allows his films to be born in the edit, often taking on thematic and visual nuances that were far from intentional on set, on the day. Chadd produced a new movie, Crumb Catcher, which is out in theaters TODAY 7/19/24. Check showtimes at your local Drafthouse or AMC. Take 122: Ryan Gosling In Review Pt. 4- Only God Forgives & Song to Song.
This week's Talkhouse episode was recorded live at the On Air Festival in Brooklyn recently—that explains why you'll hear some audience questions at the end—and it features Hamilton Leithauser and Randall Poster, two interesting guys who were just meeting for the first time. Leithauser is best known as the frontman for The Walkmen, the New York band that put out a string of incredible records between 2000 and 2013 before going on a hiatus that lasted a decade—they reunited for a tour last year and have some festival dates lined up for this year. But Leithauser kept plenty busy during the band's downtime, releasing three great records on his own—and he's apparently got another one just about ready to go. Perhaps more relevant to this conversation, at least a bit, is the fact that he's recently gotten into making music for film and TV. Avid Talkhouse listeners will remember that he was on the podcast last year talking with Ethan Hawke about a Paul Newman documentary they worked on together. Leithauser's latest project in that realm is music for a doc series that just premiered at Sundance, and he also just finished up his yearly residence at the posh Cafe Carlyle. You may not immediately recognize the name of today's other guest, but Randall Poster has almost certainly played you a song that you love at some point over the past few decades. As the go-to music supervisor for some incredible filmmakers, he's helped set the mood for more than 200 movies. Perhaps most notably Poster has worked repeatedly with Wes Anderson, a director for whom the soundtrack is massively important. Watch the credits next time you love the song choices in a movie, and you might just see his name. Poster also recently curated a huge 20-LP box set called The Birdsong Project Collection, which you'll hear about in this chat as well. Elsewhere, Leithauser and Poster talk about their jobs, about other podcasts—including one they had in common, called Call Your Grandmother. They get into the story of how Poster got into his unusual profession, and Leithauser talks about a Springsteen cover he recorded that may never see the light of day. Leithauser also talks about the time the presence of Christian Bale basically ruined a Walkmen show, though he can't quite remember the movie it was surrounding: Guys, it was Terrence Malick's already-kinda-forgotten film Song To Song. Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Hamilton Leithauser and Randall Poster for chatting. If you liked what you heard, please follow Talkhouse on your favorite podcasting platform, and check out all the goodness at Talkhouse.com. This episode was produced by Myron Kaplan, and the Talkhouse theme is composed and performed by the Range. See you next time!

Twitter : https://twitter.com/JournaldeCinema

In this episode of "Kahnversations," we interview Olivia Applegate. Olivia Applegate is an actor multi-hyphenate based in Los Angeles. Originally from Austin, TX, Olivia got her start when she landed a role in Terrence Malick’s feature, SONG TO SONG, alongside heavy hitters such as Ryan Gosling, Michael Fassbender, Natalie Portman and Rooney Mara. She continued as an Indie Darling, starring in several critically acclaimed features including KRISHA, which won the Audience and Grand Jury Prizes at SXSW and was an official selection at the Semaine de la Critique at Cannes. Her indie film success combined with her star turn singing on NBC’s AMERICA'S GOT TALENT, garnered her representation in LA. Since moving West, Olivia has booked roles on NBC’s REVOLUTION, Fox’s THE GIFTED and the upcoming shows EUPHORIA, for HBO starring Zendaya, and Bravo’s limited series, DIRTY JOHN, starring Connie Britton and Eric Bana. She’s also the lead in streaming site Passionflix’s new series, DRIVEN, acting opposite fellow Kahn student, Casey Deidrick. Olivia enjoys working behind the camera as a writer, producer and director as well. Her most recent collaboration, PINK LEMONADE, is on the festival circuit this year. When Olivia isn’t acting, she loves performing as a singer and cellist and has even helped compose and perform songs for several of her film projects. She also loves cooking (AKA throwing random ingredients in a pan and hoping for the best). You can download or subscribe to our podcast for FREE by clicking below. If you like “Kahnversations,” please leave a rating or review on our iTunes page! There are so many inspiring podcasts with fabulous stars out there. But their careers feel light years away from ours, don’t they? Wouldn’t it be great to hear from the guy who just booked his first pilot? Or the kid finally doing a studio pic after a bunch of low budget indies? Or the woman who’s been a series regular a few times but is only now becoming a name? What about the guy who’s been on a show for years and you know his face but what’shisnameagain? Or that actress who is now a freakin’ showrunner???? How’d THEY do it, right? How did they transition from relative obscurity, bartending and bottle service, to buying that house in Brentwood? We’re producing “Kahnversations,” a podcast that provides access to THOSE people -- your immediate predecessors -- so that you can learn from them while their battle scars are still fresh. In “Kahnversations,” our own Ryan Bailey interviews some of Lesly Kahn & Company’s working actors, directors, and writers in order to learn how they got started in Hollywood, the challenges and hurdles they faced, and how they overcame the odds. (They also dish out some crazy stories!) Listen in and enjoy as these entertainers speak candidly about their paths, processes, and experiences. You might even hear a bit about how Lesly and the Kahnstitute have influenced and shaped their careers.

Keith has worked on several projects for Terrence Malick over the years, including The Tree of Life, To the Wonder, Knight of Cups, Voyage of Time, and Song to Song. More recent editing projects for Keith include the Grateful Dead documentary Long Strange Trip, and the narrative feature film Chappaquiddick, about Ted Kennedy's involvement in the fatal 1969 car accident that claimed the life of Mary Jo Kopechne.

The Cogill's embrace the complexities of controversial director Terrence Malick's new film, "Song To Song," set to the backdrop of the Austin music scene starring Ryan Gosling, Natalie Portman, Michael Fassbender, and Rooney Mara. They also celebrate the importance of independent film festivals, like the Dallas International Film Festival (DIFF2017), where you can find some out of the way cinematic gems. Wine expert Hayley Hamilton Cogill pairs Austin music with wine made just down the road in the Texas Hill Country, Fall Creek Vineyards, influenced heavily by New World and Old World traditions. The Cogills wrap the conversation with insight into wine country travel, noting that when you visit a region, find the out of the way, small production winemaker instead of always going for the obvious. Like attending film fests, you may find a true treasure.
