Live at On Air Fest: Hamilton Leithauser (The Walkmen) with Randall Poster

Talkhouse Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 21, 2024 38:24

This week's Talkhouse episode was recorded live at the On Air Festival in Brooklyn recently—that explains why you'll hear some audience questions at the end—and it features Hamilton Leithauser and Randall Poster, two interesting guys who were just meeting for the first time. Leithauser is best known as the frontman for The Walkmen, the New York band that put out a string of incredible records between 2000 and 2013 before going on a hiatus that lasted a decade—they reunited for a tour last year and have some festival dates lined up for this year. But Leithauser kept plenty busy during the band's downtime, releasing three great records on his own—and he's apparently got another one just about ready to go. Perhaps more relevant to this conversation, at least a bit, is the fact that he's recently gotten into making music for film and TV. Avid Talkhouse listeners will remember that he was on the podcast last year talking with Ethan Hawke about a Paul Newman documentary they worked on together. Leithauser's latest project in that realm is music for a doc series that just premiered at Sundance, and he also just finished up his yearly residence at the posh Cafe Carlyle. You may not immediately recognize the name of today's other guest, but Randall Poster has almost certainly played you a song that you love at some point over the past few decades. As the go-to music supervisor for some incredible filmmakers, he's helped set the mood for more than 200 movies. Perhaps most notably Poster has worked repeatedly with Wes Anderson, a director for whom the soundtrack is massively important. Watch the credits next time you love the song choices in a movie, and you might just see his name. Poster also recently curated a huge 20-LP box set called The Birdsong Project Collection, which you'll hear about in this chat as well. Elsewhere, Leithauser and Poster talk about their jobs, about other podcasts—including one they had in common, called Call Your Grandmother. They get into the story of how Poster got into his unusual profession, and Leithauser talks about a Springsteen cover he recorded that may never see the light of day. Leithauser also talks about the time the presence of Christian Bale basically ruined a Walkmen show, though he can't quite remember the movie it was surrounding: Guys, it was Terrence Malick's already-kinda-forgotten film Song To Song. Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Hamilton Leithauser and Randall Poster for chatting. If you liked what you heard, please follow Talkhouse on your favorite podcasting platform, and check out all the goodness at Talkhouse.com. Here she opens up about her hopes for hospitality into the future, how she landed her plum role at Rosewood, and how in this "fourth quarter" of her career she is living out the dream she had for herself at 10 years of age. Poynder says she never would have achieved that dream if it wasn't for three different mentors who helped her maintain her self belief along the way. She is also a believer in teams, and has held positions including General Manager at The Conrad New York Downtown and General Manager of The Waldorf Astoria in Chicago. The Carlyle is one of the world's most prestigious city hotels with a celebrity history spanning decades. It is brimming with artworks, is itself a catalogue of design history and has always been live with the sound of some of America's best musicians at The Cafe Carlyle within the hotel, which opened in 1947, 16 years after the hotel opened. Bono, Cindi Lauper, Mariah Carey, Billy Joel, John Mayer, Bill Murray and Liza Minelli are just a few who have given impromptu performances at the piano in legendary Bemelmans Bar. The Carlyle became a favourite of Hollywood stars after Ingrid Bergman first stayed there when she filmed Intermezzo. It has captivated the well heeled and the well educated for years and was where Jacqueline Onassis met Audrey Hepburn, and the hotel has appeared in Sex And The City, Gossip Girl, HBO's Girls and Bravo's Younger, and the movie "A Very Murray Christmas" starring Bill Murray was entirely filmed at the hotel. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge stayed there during their first visit to New York. The hotel produces over 1200 monogrammed pillow cases each year for guests, and Hubert De Givenchy once owned an apartment there, and during the Kennedy administration the hotel's owner Robert Dowling kept the "Kennedy Duplex" empty in case the president ever wanted to stay. Duncan Sheik is probably best-known for "Barely Breathing," the hit single from his self-titled 1996 debut album that went Gold, spent more than a year on the charts and earned the singer-songwriter a Grammy nomination. Beyond writing one of the most recognizable songs of the 20th century, Sheik has subsequently released a wealth of tremendous albums with a continually changing and ever-evolving sound. Along the way, he expanded his artistic scope to a career in composing — winning a Grammy and two Tony Awards for his work on Broadway. But long before he was writing world-renowned songs and entertaining audiences in two different musical mediums, Sheik was a kid in South Carolina playing hair metal covers in a talent show. Recently, Sheik spoke to My First Band host Tyler Maas about what he's working on now, his recently released Live at the Cafe Carlyle album and some especially notable moments from his long and accomplished career in music. Over the course of the hour-long discussion, Sheik opened up about his adolescent rock band, formative years writing and recording himself while attending boarding school, playing in the Brown University orchestra pit (and later playing in a band) with Lisa Loeb, the ups and downs that came with sudden mainstream notoriety, defying industry expectations, his unlikely path to musical theater and much more. My First Band is sponsored by Mystery Room Mastering and Lakefront Brewery. The show is edited by Jared Blohm. You can listen to My First Band on iTunes, Stitcher, Spotify, and wherever else you get podcasts. You can also listen to rebroadcasts of previous My First Band episodes on WMSE every Wednesday from noon to 12:30 p.m. CST. The Third Story Podcast with Leo Sidran

Duncan Sheik’s career has not followed a straight line. After studying semiotics at Brown University, he emerged in the mid 1990s as a pop singer songwriter with his hit “Barely Breathing”, and quickly revealed himself to bend toward more literate adult oriented rock. He continued to make records and land himself on the charts but also began exploring composition for film and theater.  The success of 2006's Spring Awakening, a hit rock musical that featured Sheik’s score (and which won the Tony for Best Original Score as well as a Grammy for Best Musical Show Album) planted him firmly in the world of Broadway. He has continued to write for theater, often collaborating with poet and playwright Steven Sater.  Over the years he has explored electronic music, folk music, and enjoyed covering songs by his favorite writers, many of whom were influential to him as a boy.  His new record Live at the Cafe Carlyle, a small format live concert was recorded in the pre pandemic playground of the upper east side, back when people gathered together unmasked and unconcerned to experience something collectively. The record in many ways is an encapsulation of his career - it includes some of the most famous songs from his artist and composer lives, as well as some of his favorite songs by other songwriters.  We talked recently about his career, his songwriting, technology in music, how becoming a father has influenced his work, his life in Covid and what it means to release music in these strange and trying times, and what exactly is semiotics anyway.

Steve Cooper talks with musician Duncan Sheik. Duncan had a Top 20 hit with the song Barely Breathing from his 1996 eponymous debut. He had three more albums land on the Billboard 200 by the end of the next decade, including his fourth full-length, 2002's Daylight. After scoring his first feature-length film, 2004's A Home at the End his career turned toward Broadway with the success of 2006's Spring Awakening, a hit rock musical. It won him the Tony for Best Original Score as well as a Grammy for Best Musical Show Album, both with lyricist Steven Sater. He continued to juggle adult-alternative albums, film scores, and musical theater in the years to follow, issuing his eighth solo album, Legerdemain, in 2015 and moving his musical American Pyscho to Broadway in 2016. For that show, he served as composer, lyricist, and orchestrator. He reunited with Sater for Alice by Heart, a musical adaptation of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland that opened off-Broadway in 2019. He also just released the album Live at the Cafe Carlyle.

395 - Eddy Davis Banjoist Eddy Davis was born September 26, 1940 and passed away April 7, 2020. This interview with Mr. Davis was recorded in December 2008. The word "legend" gets thrown around a lot, but Eddy Davis certainly was one. An extremely talented banjoist, for anyone who listens to this interview you'll also find he was a great storyteller. To a lot of people he was known for leading the Eddy Davis New Orleans Jazz Band that played many Monday evenings at the Cafe Carlyle in New York City. The band was known for playing traditional jazz and featuring Woody Allen on clarinet. Eddy Davis can be heard on the soundtrack of Woody Allen's films "Radio Days" and "Midnight in Paris" and had a small part in "Sweet and Lowdown." He can also be seen and heard in the documentary film "Wild Man Blues" about Woody Allen's passion for New Orleans jazz. A talented instrumentalist, songwriter, record producer and very entertaining performer, he made some of the most enjoyable recordings around. He was a truly unique artist. We talked of doing another interview and I could never seem to pin him down. I was honored and delighted to interview him. I hope for anyone who knew him they will enjoy this recording of him talking in such detail. For those who never got to see him perform, I hope this will inspire you to try and locate some of his records which are all exceptional. The world of music has suffered a great loss. Eddy Davis will be greatly missed. The Paul Leslie Hour is a talk show dedicated to “Helping People Tell Their Stories.” Some of the most iconic people of all time drop in to chat. I've had the song "Stay (I Missed You)" stuck in my head since interviewing Grammy nominated singer-songwriter Lisa Loeb last week. It was a juggernaut hit for her in the 90's and she followed it up with a string of hit singles.  She'll never know how lucky she was that I didn't sing it to her during our interview or I'm afraid it would have been a much shorter interview. I've been wanting to have Lisa on the show for a while now because of her presence in the LA music scene and popularity with kids. But also because of her longevity in the music industry. Lisa was a trailblazer when she released "Stay" from the Reality Bites soundtrack because she was the first independent pop musician to have a Number 1 single while not signed to a recording contract. Anyone in the music industry can tell you that's a huge accomplishment. Since then she's carved out a niche for herself with a large following of loyal fans. The music industry has changed a lot over the years and so has Lisa. She explains how motherhood has changed her perspective on music and her priorities. She also told me about her children's albums, which she recorded before having kids and why she's drawn to that style of music. Her children's albums “Catch the Moon” (with Elizabeth Mitchell) and Amazon Music exclusives, “Nursery Rhyme Parade!” and “Feel What U Feel” (featuring Craig Robinson and Ed Helms). She has also published two picture book-CDs for Sterling Children’s Books:  “Lisa Loeb’s Songs for Movin’ and Shakin'” and “Lisa Loeb’s Silly Sing Along.” Her latest album "Feel What U Feel" is a family album of mostly original songs featuring guest artists Craig Robinson, Ed Helms and others. It's available exclusively on Amazon Music. I had the pleasure of seeing her perform at the Great Big Family Play Day in LA and it was wonderful. Parents who have been fans since their college days stopped by to listen and introduce their kids to her style of music. And it is a very unique style. Lisa has gentleness to her music and her spirit which I think is what draws people in and keeps them coming back for more, and makes them stay. In a few weeks she'll be doing a short residency at the Cafe Carlyle in NYC from June 6th to June 17th. For more information on Lisa visit her website, lisaloeb.com. Beckie is an award-winning performer, teacher, song writer, musical director and vocal coach, a staple of the Windy City music scene, and nationally recognized as one of the country's finest cabaret entertainers. Along with her musical partner Tom Michael, they have been called, "Sizzling...immensely appealing...one of the most compelling duos in cabaret today!" Beckie is from Pierceton, IN, but a Chicago girl through and through. She learned piano at an early age and fell in love with music and the performing arts while hanging around the Wagon Wheel Theatre in Warsaw, IN. She has performed at some of the nation's top clubs, theaters, concert halls, outdoor venues, and cabaret rooms. She most recently appeared at Carnegie Hall and the Auditorium Theatre. We play a few song excerpts throughout the podcast to give you a taste of her talent, style and singular musical gifts. Beckie and the boys chat about cabaret performers Michael Feinstein, Barbara Cook, Karen Mason, Sally Mayes, Julie Wilson, Bette Midler, Bernadette Peters, Marilyn Maye and Barbra Streisand. (Just to drop a few names!) We discuss Laura Benanti's latest show at the Cafe Carlyle in New York and the stellar reviews she received. Gary gives a shout out to the Therapy Players, Chicago's premier all-psychotherapist comedy improvisation troupe! Seems they're holding auditions looking for a few new recruits. If you or someone you love is mental health professional, check them out at www.therapyplayers.com. In addition to performing steadily with Tom, Beckie is also a vocal coach and teacher, has recently become engaged, and sings with Laura Freeman & Marianne Murphy Orland in a group called Girls Like Us. Roscoe inquires whether anyone can be taught how to sing, in an apparent attempt to jump start a cabaret career of his own. Beckie responds as only a true vocal/performance coach can.
