Unleash Your Leadership Superpowers Bishop Warner H. Brown is a retired bishop of The United Methodist Church, serving from 2000 to 2016. He is currently serving as an interim bishop of the Sierra Leone Episcopal Area in the West Africa Central Conference. From 2014 to 2016, Bishop Brown was the President of the Council of Bishops. ------------------------ Bishop Brown was born and raised as an only child in Baltimore, Maryland, the son of Ida and Warner Brown. At the age of thirteen, while reading the New Testament, he felt a call to serve. He began preaching as a youth and was encouraged to continue doing so. As a young adult, he attended the University of Maryland, (B.A. in Sociology, 1969.) He also graduated from Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington, DC with a Master of Divinity degree. In 1973 Warner was ordained deacon in the Baltimore Annual Conference by Bishop James K. Mathews. Yet his movement west had already begun with a pastoral appointment in the Western Pennsylvania Annual Conference as both the pastor of a church and Director of Bethany House Ministries in Pittsburgh, a social service ministry for two housing projects. While serving in western Pennsylvania, he was ordained elder in 1975 by Bishop Roy C. Nichols. In 1979, he answered a national search for an associate conference staff position in the California-Nevada Conference and transferred there. Once in California, it was only six months later that he was asked to serve as Conference Council Director. From this role of program and administrative oversight for the Conference, Warner was appointed just four years later to the Superintendency of the Golden Gate District, the richly diverse area including San Francisco and several rural and suburban counties along the Pacific Coast. Four years after that, he was given the charge of the Taylor Memorial UMC in Oakland, CA. While serving this significant congregation, the community was then assaulted by the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake and two years later the holocaust of fires in the Oakland hills. As chairperson of the Oakland Inter-religious Network for responding to this disaster, Warner led the community's ecumenical disaster response. Throughout these years, Warner has been active in the social justice ministries and programs of those communities and church connections where he has been appointed. To list but a sampling: Volunteer Police Chaplain, Trustee of the Glide Foundation, vice-chair of the Community Advisory Commission for Alameda County Medical Center, member of the Governing Board of United Way for Kern County, a member of the. Board of Directors for the Bakersfield Homeless Shelter, recipient of the 1996 Outstanding Leadership and Service Award for Emergency Response Ministries, given by UMCOR, and recipient of a 1998 Special Congressional Recognition from Congresswoman Barbara Lee. Warner's leadership in the church has included service as a delegate to General Conference twice, member of the General Commission on Religion and Race, a faculty member for New DS/CCD training, Harry Hoosier Member of and twice the host for the National Black Methodists for Church Renewal, chair of the Board of Missions in California-Nevada Annual Conference as well as numerous other conference boards and agencies, adjunct consultant to the Alban Institute, and a Wesley Seminary Distinguished Alumni. Following a successful eleven-year pastorate in Oakland, Warner was given a new challenge as Senior Pastor of the predominantly white yet multi-ethnic First UMC of Bakersfield, CA. Only two years into this pastorate, he was nominated and endorsed by his conference for the episcopacy: at the Western Jurisdiction Conference Sessions in Casper, Wyoming, and in July of 2000 he was elected to the episcopacy on the 19th ballot and assigned to the Denver Area. He retired in July 2016. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Our guest today is Mark Calhoun, District Superintendent for Wyoming and our topic is context: how important understanding the contextual lay of the landscape is to effective ministry. I have a world of respect for Mark Calhoun. Mark is extremely thoughtful and always engages his brain before he speaks. He epitomizes mindfulness in a leader. An unedited Adobe file of the transcript is HERE. Note: Unedited. Part of Mark's drive towards context emerged from his time at St. Paul School of Theology in Kansas City. The focus there was on understanding the demographics and the community makeup of the local church. Who is there? What does it look like? Mark served in Wichita, Kansas before coming home to the Mountain Sky Conference. He was four years in Polson, Montana and eight in Lander, Wyoming before taking the Superintendency in Wyoming in 2020. He has been a gifted connectional leader in those three plus years. Gifted. Mark mentions he is a Type 2 on the Enneagram, and that is a helper and defined better HERE. If context is important to Mark, and it is, being in relationship is also of importance to him. He works hard at being relational. Easy to state as a goal, much more challenging to live out. I confess: my heart was strangely warmed when Mark talked about how he felt sitting with people in moments of joy and pain. It is frankly a blessing that we as pastors are called to sit with people in the extremes of life: joy, pain, anxiety. Part of the call. This podcast was produced on December 12 & 13, for release on December 18, 2023. Please share if it speaks to you. My next two guests will be the Reverend Doctor Tom Barlow of Iliff School of Theology and Reverend France Davis, Pastor Emeritus of Calvary Baptist in Salt Lake City. Those podcasts will be released on January 1st and 15th respectively. Tom Bandy (with Dr. Barlow) and Black History (with Pastor Davis) will be our starting points for discussion. I will muse a little on things connectional on January 29th. If you have a potential guest for me, send me a note. I would love to hear from you in general. My email is dennis at (@) mantuan dot (.) org (and written that way to confound harvesting bots.).

Superintendent Michelle Whitney of the Pasco School District in Washington attributes her rise to leadership to "the gifts of strangers," mentors along the way who amplified her talents and breathed the confidence into her that she needed to continue. That's what she strives to do for her own staff and students today, leading with vulnerability from a place, "where life experience and professional experience collide." Her approaches have worked. Pasco School District has seen massive improvements in graduation rates among other things and Whitney has continued to rise as well, serving currently as president of the Washington Association of School Administrators. Pouring plaster of Paris into the voids created by decomposed soft tissue has created casts that were believed to be faithful renditions of those who died. In theory, the skeletons were embedded within the plaster casts of human victims and those of other mammals. In 2015, Estelle Lazer and her team of experts commenced a project to CT scan and X-ray the casts of the Pompeian victims. The initial results of the CT scans and X-rays were surprising as they revealed that the actual production methods for the casts were quite different to the procedures that had been minimally documented in the 19th and 20th centuries. This year, the University of Sydney and the Superintendency of the Pompeii Archaeological Park signed a Memorandum of Agreement, which makes the two institutions partners in this important project. In June 2017, permission was granted for the first time to transport plaster casts of victims from the site to the nearby local hospital for scanning in a state-of-the-art CT scanner that provided much higher resolution than the machine employed in the 2015 study. The results of this season are providing us with new insights into the lives and deaths of these victims, as well as a better understanding of how the casts were achieved. ABOUT THE SPEAKER: Dr Estelle Lazer, author of Resurrecting Pompeii (2009), is an archaeologist best known for her work on the human remains from Pompeii. In 2015, she was appointed as a consultant for the Pompeii Cast Restoration Project. Estelle works for Academy Travel and is an Honorary Research Associate in the Department of Classics and Ancient History at the University of Sydney. This lecture was held as part of the Sydney Ideas program on 28 November: http://sydney.edu.au/sydney_ideas/lectures/2017/dr_estelle_lazer.shtml
In this new episode, I sit down with the District Superintendent (DS) of the Metro District of the Western North Carolina Conference, Mark Andrews. Mark has just finished his first year as a DS and we talk about his adventure in this new appointment. For those who don't know a DS is someone in charge of a District within an Annual Conference. The DS's main job is to build up, encourage and help congregations and clergy in their district. They are the ones called in when there is a congregational or clergy crisis. They are also a part of the cabinet, which makes the appointments for the conference. We talk about all these areas and more in our conversation.
Steve Peck and Meghann Silverthorn of the DCSD school board talk about the superintendency, its challenges, and this week's release of the performance evaluation of Superintendent Kane. Today's guests are Dr. Jeff Butts, Superintendent of MSD Wayne Township, and Dr. Shawn Smith, Superintendent of MSD Lawrence Township. Both of these young superintendents are in growing urban school districts in Indianapolis, Indiana. With over 13,000 students, 1,500 staff members, and multi-million dollar budgets, how do they see the role of superintendents changing over the next few years? What are some new trends in education? Plus, we also discuss the teacher shortage and how to overcome it. Join Dr. J.T. Coopman and his guests this week on Indiana Education Insight!
THE UNLEARNING LEADER Thoughts on Superintendency and School Leadership from IL Supt's Nick Polyak and Mike Lubelfeld about their new book
Thirty-two. That’s how many years John Deasy has spent in education as a teacher, high school principal, and superintendent in four different districts across three states. Of all these roles, his stint at the Los Angeles Unified School District may be the most memorable—and controversial. As superintendent, he led one of the largest and most highly-critiqued 1:1 device deployments in the country—one that that led to a frenzy of media reporting, and a number of columnists from L.A.-based and national publications alike asking, “Where did it all go so wrong?” After leaving LAUSD in October 2014, Deasy joined the Broad Center as a Superintendent-in-Residence, where he’s been working to develop school district leaders from across the country. But now, he’s gearing up for the next chapter: creating an organization to address juvenile incarceration and, eventually, reduce juvenile recidivism by 50 percent. EdSurge caught up with Deasy to chat about the up’s and down’s of superintendencies, where he made mistakes, and whether technology is adding to issues of inequity.
Since they were first revealed in 1863, the casts from Pompeii which preserved the forms of the victims in their moment of death have generated huge interest. Stories of their supposed lives and deaths have proved to be persistent not just in novels and movies, but also in some academic treatments of the site. As part of the Great Pompeii Project of 2015, the Superintendency organised the restoration of 86 of the 103 casts. Estelle Lazer and her team were given the opportunity to generate CT scans and x-ray analysis. For the first time, it was possible to carry out a scientific analysis a number of the casts and the remains embedded within them. The results were unexpected. Yes, there were new insights into the victims, their lives and their deaths, but, as this lecture will show, there was also much to learn about archaeological practices at Pompeii in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. A Sydney Ideas lecture co-presented with the Department of Classics and Ancient History and the Nicholson Museum at the University of Sydney
