Emboldened by brilliant performances from its two leads Gina Gershon and Jennifer Tilly, the film is both an assured and nimble stylistic calling card for the future Matrix directors and a carefully studied lesbian romance, rendered in considered motif and visual flourish. We begin with an examination of the Wachowskis as filmmakers and how their work exists at a singular nexus of mass appeal and subversiveness. Then, we discuss the influence of feminist author and journalist Susie Bright, a key influence and collaborator on the film, and how she informed the Wachowskis' formal approach to formally conveying the slow burn of lesbian eroticism. Finally, we discuss the film's erotic sequences, how they transcend simple arousal, and what they tell us about the revolutionary capacity of sex and pleasure as a weapon against capitalism's confining homogeneity.Buy and read Xuanlin's book Revolutionary Desires: The Political Power of the Sex Scene at 404Ink.Read Xuanlin's Manifesto for the Modern Cinematic Sex Scene at AnOther.....Our theme song is "Mirror" by Chris Fish

Welcome to Art is Awesome, the show where we talk with an artist or art worker with a connection to the San Francisco Bay Area. This week, Emily features photographer Chloe Sherman, who shares her journey from Portland to San Francisco and her role in capturing the queer community of the 90s. Chloe's work, which portrays a time when the city's rents were affordable and its social spots thriving, has been exhibited internationally and highlighted in a well-received book. The episode also details how Chloe's daughter's social media efforts during the pandemic brought greater visibility to her art. The conversation delves into Chloe's inspirations, daily routines, and creative influences, with a mention of her show 'Renegades' at the Leica store in San Francisco. About Artist Chloe Sherman:Chloe Sherman (b. 1969, New York) is a San Francisco-based fine art photographer known for her vibrant portraits of queer life in San Francisco during the 1990s. As a vehement visual chronicler, Sherman captures an intimacy and vibrancy that brings a unique subculture to life, even decades later. Sherman received her degree in fine art photography from the San Francisco Art Institute in 1999, during which time she began documenting a generation of young self-identified Queers. The community became family, and she reveled in their collective creativity, support, pride, and their strident defiance of cultural norms. This was the catalyst for an entire body of work that would go on to be recognized and shown internationally. Sherman's photographs, all shot on 35mm film, offer a window into an era of defiance, freedom, resilience, and tenderness, shedding light on the energy of San Francisco at a time when it was brimming with possibility. Her images are a throughline, anchoring viewers to a moment in Queer history and immortalizing moments of gender experimentation and joy.Her work has been exhibited internationally, including at F³ Freiraum für Fotografie (Berlin), Schlomer Haus Gallery (San Francisco), Kunsthalle Nürnberg (Nuremberg), Leica San Francisco, and The Diego Rivera Gallery (San Francisco). She has been published extensively in Nothing But the Girl (ed. Susie Bright and Jill Posner; 1996), RESEARCH: Angry Women in Rock (Juno Books; 1996), Out In America (Viking Press; 1994), Rolling Stone Magazine, Interview Magazine, Deneuve, the Advocate, and the New Yorker. Sherman's work is a part of the permanent collections at The National Gallery of Art, SF MOMA, and those of private collectors. In 2023, Hatje Cantz Verlag published a monograph of her work, Renegades: San Francisco – 1990s. Visit  Chloe's Website:  ChloeShermanStudio.comFollow Chloe on Instagram:  @ChloeDShermanLearn more about her Renegades exhibit at Leica Store San Francisco, CLICK HERE. --About Podcast Host Emily Wilson:Emily a writer in San Francisco, with work in outlets including Hyperallergic, Artforum, 48 Hills, the Daily Beast, California Magazine, Latino USA, and Women's Media Center. Over the past 50 or so years, Marilyn Minter has been on a roving exploration of feminist, sex-positive thinking. In her art-making, she harnesses the power of sexual imagery—a realm long controlled by men—and presents it through the lens of female desire. Among her most acclaimed works are her “Bathers” series, which reimagines classic female bathers; her “Bush” series, originally a Playboy commission; and a group of new portraits, currently on view at the New York gallery LGDR (through June 3), featuring impactful cultural figures she admires, such as Roxane Gay, Gloria Steinem, Lizzo, and Monica Lewinsky. On the episode, Minter talks about the unrealistic societal and body-image standards young women continue to face, the importance of embracing complexity and multiplicity in artwork, and the hope she has in the next generation to fight social injustice.Special thanks to our Season 7 sponsor, L'ÉCOLE, School of Jewelry Arts.Show notes: [00:49] Marilyn Minter[04:02] Bettie Page[06:10] Susie Bright[24:31]  “The Joys (and Challenges) of Sex After 70”[27:31] HBO's The Deuce[33:37] Pamela Anderson for Parkett[40:33] LGDR[46:30] Minter's “Coral Ridge Towers” Series[52:19] Linda Yablonsky[53:23] Diane Arbus[55:24] James Harithas[56:35] Sylvia Mangold[56:59] Kenneth Snelson[58:16] Christof Kohlhöfer[01:04:15] Neville Wakefield[01:07:32] Planned Parenthood[01:07:45] ADLAR AR App

In this tremendous milestone for BFG, for BFG editor-in-chief Neal Pollack, for Sea of Reeds Media, and for the history of the world in general, this week we celebrate the 100th episode of our podcast! And by "celebrate," we mean, "do what we've always done on the show at a high level, and with a funky new theme song."Neal summons frequent guest Stephen Garrett to discuss the vampire action-comedy 'Renfield.' No one has a bad word to say about Nic Cage as Dracula. Who could? But Neal in particular found the screenplay to be a tonal mess, with a useless drug-lord subplot taking away what is good and fun about the movie. Stephen, a happier person, tends to only see the good and fun. You be the judge, and beware if you invite Nicolas Cage into your house. There's no dissent about 'How To Blow Up A Pipeline,' though. Sara Stewart joins Neal to praise the indie environmental activism thriller, now in theaters. It reminds them both of gritty, realistic 1970s political movies. And there's the added juice that studios refused to touch the movie because of its politics and because they are funded by oil companies. But it's a raw and engrossing film with nary an ounce of narrative fat. It's the most left-wing movie you'll see all year, but whatever your politics, check it out.'Beef' is our TV show of the week. Susie Bright joins Neal to heap praise on this Netflix show, which, she wisely points out, has all the elements of classic Korean revenge dramas. The show is Korean-American by birth, and Susie also informs us that Korean filmmakers are steeped in classical French film techniques as well. She even susses out elements of classic French farce in the narrative. Neal agrees the show is good, but is also deeply raw and emotional, and asks "why are we watching this?" I guess you could ask that about anything, which we do every week on the podcast.Enjoy the episode! See you for #200!

In the latest soon-to-be-award-winning edition of the BFG podcast, Neal Pollack welcomes Sara Stewart and Stephen Garrett back to the show. Stephen went to Park City, Utah, to see all the Sundance movies, and Sara watched them from home. Sundance is back, the movies are back, and this was one of the best festivals in years! They both loved the Wall Street-set erotic thriller 'Fair Play.' Stephen loved a quirky movie called 'Theater Camp,' though Sara has an extreme aversion to its star, Ben Platt. And let's get the discourse going again about 'Cat Person,' now a movie adapted from a New Yorker short story.BFG provides the most comprehensive coverage of Sundance anywhere. A roundtable for the ages.Meanwhile, we welcome Susie Bright to the BFG podcast stage for the first time, to talk about Sarah Polley's "B+" film 'Women Talking,' a theatrical interpretation of a decade-old horrific sex-abuse scandal that occurred in a Bolivian Mennonite colony. Neal and Susie both admire the performances, and the excellent writing, but agree that the film sometimes drags a bit and hits the same conversational beats over and over again. Still, this is the kind of "quality" film, Susie says, that will finally bring perpetually terrified NPR listeners back to the movie theaters. Neal begins one of his rants about how movie theaters never should have been closed to begin with, but they get back to talking about the movie pretty quickly, so don't worry. Finally, Paula Shaffer pops in to talk about the reboots of 'Night Court' and 'That 70s Show' currently on TV, even though 'That 70s Show' is actually 'That 90s Show' now. Neither show is particularly bad, though 'Night Court' exists in a weird kind of temporal limbo. Both Neal and Paula agree that 'That 90s Show' is a bit better and seems to know what it wants to do with itself. Regardless, old TV shows never die, and either does the BFG podcast.Enjoy!

In this episode we talk about the boundary pushing neo noir crime thriller Bound. Bound is a 1996 American neo-noir crime thriller film written and directed by the Wachowskis[a] in their feature film directorial debut. Violet (Jennifer Tilly), who longs to escape her relationship with her mafioso boyfriend Caesar (Joe Pantoliano), enters into a clandestine affair with alluring ex-con Corky (Gina Gershon), and the two women hatch a scheme to steal $2 million of Mafia money. Bound was the first film directed by the Wachowskis, and they took inspiration from Billy Wilder to tell a noir story filled with sex and violence. Financed by Dino De Laurentiis, the film was made on a tight budget with the help of frugal crew members including cinematographer Bill Pope. The directors initially struggled to cast the lesbian characters of Violet and Corky before securing Tilly and Gershon. To choreograph the sex scenes, the directors employed sex educator Susie Bright, who also made a cameo appearance in the film. And there you have it, just a taste of the Dirty Poetry yet to come.Stay with me for all the rest of this episode of Dirty Poetry, usingthe word poetry very loosely. Our first story is about a group of oldfriends who have known each other for years and years. They'vetraveled together and had adventures and have been a part of eachothers lives for a long time. They know each other well. They havefor a long time, had a monthly card game. Everything was alwaysfriendly and normal... until tonight... when things got strange.Let's take a listen. That was Heads-Up Poker. Written bySusan Di Placido. Ms Di Placido is a prolific author. She has, todate, published ten novels and one collection of short stories. Herstories almost always involve gambling and card playing and many ofthem are set in Las Vegas. But regardless of the setting, Ms DiPlacido always manages to work in a lot of steamy spicy sex scenes. Her work has been recognized and awarded in the literary world. Hershort story, “I, Candy” won the Spirit Award at the 2005 MoonDance International Film Festival. Her short story collection,American Cool won the bronze medal in the 2008 IPPY Awards and it wasa finalist for the 2008 Indie Book Awards. Her novel Shuffle Up andDeal was nominated for the Romantic Times Reviewer's Choice Award forBest Erotic Fiction in 2010. Susan Di Placido's work has beenpublished in many places. Among them, Maxim Jakubowski's MammothBook Of Best New Erotica in both volume six and volume seven, Zane'sCaramel Flava, Run Devil Run, Slow Trains Literary Review, Rebellion:New Voices Of Fiction, Clean Sheets and Susie Bright's BestAmerican Erotica 2007, which is where we found our story, Heads-UpPoker. Let's take a moment and address theelephant in the room. Okay, one of the elephants in the room. Youmight notice that both of our stories in this episode of Dirty Poetryare written by women, one of them decidedly lesbian, but both storiesare told from the perspective of heterosexual men. This kind ofgender bending perspective shift is, and always has been, commonamong the authors of erotic literature. As readers and listeners, these stories allow us to walk a mile in someone else's panties. And our authors also take an equally joyful turn at that switch. Infact, part of the beauty of both erotic literature and our own eroticimagination is, that in the privacy of our own minds, we can allallow our imaginations, our desires and hungers, to roam freely, toventure into places that we would never allow to happen in our reallives. With all of our real life expressions of sexuality that are sotender, loving, comforting, well... okay, even with the ass slapping, hair pulling excitement that we want in our real life sexuality, still there are places, many places that our imagination goes that wewould never allow to see the light of day. Good writers take us tothese forbidden places and bring us safely back again from theadventures of foreign travel in exotic lands. With our own eroticfantasies encouraged to take wing, our sexual imaginations are nowallowed to travel to places that are unlikely, improbable. Placesthat stretch the boundaries of what sexuality is, and occasionallyeven jump the fence into the impossible. Stories that can arousepossibilities that we would have never imagined. But somehow theybecome real for us for just a few brilliant moments in the privacy ofour own minds. It is there, in the privacy of our imagination that wecan begin to discover our own most primal sexual arousals. It isgreat writers with their wild tales, with their exotic erotic...

Porno Cultures Podcast

In this episode we explore the wild world of pornographic magazines. Believe it or not, before the popularization of the internet, a great many people had their first and most lasting encounters with pornography via magazines. Magazines were an essential part of pornographic creation and circulation for many decades, and now that they’ve fallen victim to the digital revolution, they’ve only recently been considered as an archival object suited for academic study. In this episode we tackle just a small sliver of pornographic magazine history by talking about a set of magazines addressing queer sexuality. This episode is divided into two sections. The first begins with my conversation with professor Elizabeth Groeneveld. Elizabeth talks to me about her work researching the lesbian pornographic and political commentary magazine On Our Backs. On Our Backs published from 1985 to 1990 and was founded and edited by Susie Bright (we previously talked about Susie in our episode with Lynn Comella). On Our Backs was a sex-positive answer to the feminist anti-pornography magazine Off Our Backs. As one of the only magazines providing lesbian-made pornographic representation for their fellow lesbian readers, the editors surprisingly received a lot of questions from readers about how they were supposed to consume such imagery. After our conversation, Elizabeth goes on to explain in her talk at the Society for Cinema and Media Studies how letters to the editor of On Our Backs reveal confused reactions to the pornographic content of the magazine—regarding both sexual discovery and confusion about whether one can be a “good feminist lesbian” if one is turned on by such imagery. Elizabeth’s research is really fascinating reveals the conflicted nature of pornographic politics. Our second interview and talk is with Daniel Laurin. Daniel is a PhD student in Cinema Studies at the University of Toronto. His research looks into a group of gay male pornographic magazines from the 1970s and 80s to analyze the marketing of the gay-for-pay performer. The most common assumption about the gay-for-pay porn performer is that they emerged in the wake of the AIDS crisis in the mid-1980s to provide an example of a strong, healthy, and dominant male figure standing in opposition to the sick, weak, and AIDS infected gay image that was dominating media depictions at the time. However, Daniel’s research into these magazines tells a very different story. His archival research proves that in fact, the marketing of—and fascination with—the gay-for-pay performer started in the pages of these pornographic magazines long before the AIDS crisis. Here’s hoping that this is the first of many episodes exploring the dynamic history of pornographic magazines!    More about Elizabeth Groeneveld  Making Feminist Media: Third-Wave Magazines on the Cusp of the Digital Age Book review for Making Feminist Media  Historical background: On Our Backs and Bad Attitude  “Sex Wars Revisited”  Daniel’s Twitter Daniel’s documentary about gay-for-pay performers   facebook.com/AcademicSex @PornoCultures Help Support the Podcast! The talk will feature a conversation about visual culture, history, and sexuality studies between an eminent film studies scholar, Linda Williams, and a pioneering community activist and writer (and UCSC alum), Susie Bright. Between them, Williams and Bright represent a generation of thought and activism in the popular and scholarly study of sexuality, obscenity in art, and feminism. In January 2013, Bright gave a "Sexual State of the Union" lecture at Cornell University on the occasion of the donation of her personal archives to Cornell's special collections. Williams, Professor of Film & Media and Rhetoric at University of California, Berkeley, has spent much of her career thinking about the place of pornography and erotic visual culture in academic film study and mass culture. This dialogue takes this year's Arts Division Lecture Series' theme, "Engaging the Mind," as an invitation to consider the place of sexuality and sexuality studies in the arts, and to explore the relationship between art-making, art-viewing, and identity.
