Traumatic events are, at times, an unfortunate component of life's equation. Reestablishing a sense of normalcy after undergoing trauma can be challenging without the right perspective. In 1989, the United States launched an attack on Panamanian installations, deploying approximately 24,000 troops, aiming to remove Gen. Manuel Noriega and establish an elected civilian government. This incursion set off a chain of abductions and murders of American citizens in the region. Our guest, Tara King, happened to be one of those citizens who was taken hostage. She shares her incredible tale of survival, resilience, and a profound shift in perspective. Tune in to this episode to hear her remarkable story and consider how the lessons learned can be applied to your own past experiences.

Flight Through Entirety: A Doctor Who Podcast

This week we're joined by Steven from New to Who to discuss one of the great loves of our lives — Dame Diana Rigg, whose astonishing performance makes The Crimson Horror one of the best episodes of the era. Notes and links So, Diana Rigg. As we all know, her breakout role was as Mrs Peel in The Avengers from 1966 to 1968. And so this is not her first appearance on Flight Through Entirety. Before discussing The Seeds of Doom, Brendan, Nathan and Richard discussed the Avengers episode that undoubtedly inspired it: The Man Eater of Surrey Green (see Episode 43: Sexiest Exposition Trope). Since then, on Bondfinger, we've discussed several more episodes of The Avengers that she starred in, as well as the 1969 Bond film On Her Majesty's Secret Service (1969), which also starred the recently-cancelled George Lazenby as Bond. Richard's Pick of the Week: the “almost unwatchable” German Super 8 films starring Diana Rigg — Der goldene Schlüssel (1966), minikillers (1969) and Diadem (1969). They're all available on YouTube, but we would completely understand if you decided not to follow the links. Mark Gatiss named Mr Sweet after his friend Matthew Sweet, the author of Inventing the Victorians (2001), which attempts to demythologise the culture of the Victorian era: turns out, they were just as much fun as we are, apparently. Sweet is also known for his probing interviews of Doctor Who actors which can be found as extras on many DVD and Blu-ray releases. We occasionally mention or allude to The League of Gentlemen, a sketch comedy series set in the fictional northern town of Royston Vasey, which ran for three seasons, a movie and a return season 15 years later. It doesn't totally hold up now, for many reasons, but it's certainly a useful text when it comes to understanding Mark Gatiss's interests as a writer. Richard points out that the opening scene of the episode echoes the famous Hovis Bread commercial from 1973, directed by Ridley Scott, which the people at Hovis (credibly) claim is “Britain's most iconic and heart-warming advert”. More about the ad here. Mrs Gillyflower's revival meeting reminds Nathan of Mrs Melrose Ape, the lady preacher from Evelyn Waugh's Vile Bodies, which we know that Mark Gatiss is aware of, because he plays a small role in Stephen Fry's film adaptation of the novel, Bright Young Things (2003). And finally, as a well-known Sherlockian, Gatiss ties this episode into the Holmes canon: in The Adventure of the Golden Pince-Nez, Watson briefly refers to his notes on “the repulsive story of the red leech”. Follow us Nathan is on Twitter as @nathanbottomley, Brendan is @brandybongos, Richard is @RichardLStone and Steven B is @steedstylin. The Flight Through Entirety theme was arranged by Cameron Lam. VISION ON SOUND

First broadcast on FAB RADIO INTERNATIONAL at 19:00 on April 24th 2022 A little over sixty years ago, a television series began that would, in many ways, come to encapsulate a particular view of nineteen sixties Britain that never really went away. It was so popular in certain countries that this particular image of Britain and the British seems to have stuck in their minds and shaped their perception of us ever since. Or perhaps one version of it has, anyway, because THE AVENGERS, the series PAUL CHANDLER, THE SHY YETI, is joining me to talk about today, went through several incarnations – and lapel carnations – as it progressed through most of the 1960s from its grey, grimy, and gritty origins in 1961, to its colourful, almost pop-art, last hurrah in 1969, and, in many ways, could be said to almost reflect that transformational decade on screen like almost no other television series of its time. Featuring PATRICK MACNEE as John Steed, a charmingly eloquent, and dapper, spy, who wears a bowler hat sometimes cast in stainless steel, and who carries a rolled umbrella which sometimes conceals a sword, who spends his professional career dealing with diabolical master minds intent upon some fiendish, eccentric, and freedom-threatening plot, usually with the assistance of a strong, plucky woman who seems far more adept at handling the rough stuff than he could ever hope to be. CATHY GALE, EMMA PEEL, and TARA KING were those fabulous, ground-breaking, and astonishingly independent women, and were played by three actors destined to become almost as iconic as the series itself: HONOR BLACKMAN, DIANA RIGG, and LINDA THORSEN. Although those other, grittier incarnations, also featured JULIA STEVENS as VENUS SMITH, JON ROLLASON as DR MARTIN KING, and the sublime and ridiculously talented IAN HENDRY who, as DR DAVID KEEL, was there right at the start, might be the person we have to thank for the series even existing at all, but who then chose to leave to pursue other career options, leaving JOHN STEED to step into the breech, and become the calm centre around which the series would carry on though such astonishing changes, not only in the lead actors, but from the technical point of view of switching from live studio videotape, to black and white, and later colour film, and a very successful penetration into the American market. In fact, if any show could be said to demonstrate the evolution of British television in the 1960s, I think THE AVENGERS may be the one that shows it off best, so much so that anyone who watched the 1961 version would barely recognise it as the same show if they tuned in again in 1969, with MOTHER and RHONNDA adding to the cast of eccentric regulars to battle each week with the very cream of 1960s acting talent. This other brainchild of Canadian Television supremo SYDNEY NEWMAN might not be your idea of what the Britain of the 1960s was really like, but it certainly is an image that has persisted since it first aired back in 1961 as a replacement for another series featuring its main star as a police surgeon, right through to its final episode in 1969, and the series was so internationally successful that it even got a fairly successful two year reimagining in the mid-1970s featuring PURDEY and GAMBIT as played by JOANNA LUMLEY and GARETH HUNT. PAUL is unashamedly a fan of the final year featuring TARA KING, so our conversation does inevitably spend a lot of time covering that era, but we do our best to give you a broader overview on our way there. I wanted to hear about the purpose of this new team and how it's going to be working. Will it have a real impact upon the future of the Block Editor? What will they be offering? How can they be reached? Who is deciding what's included and what's left out? What motivations are behind all these decisions? First broadcast on FAB RADIO INTERNATIONAL at 19:00 on April 4th 2021 In another of our loosely themed VISION ON SOUND episodes, I give a lot of (mildly) illuminated thought to the topic of LIGHTHOUSES in TV programmes. We travel with TARA KING from THE AVENGERS to find out that it's ALL DONE WITH MIRRORS, and tussle briefly with THE GIRL WHO WAS DEATH alongside THE PRISONER, and head off - with the help of regular guest ANDY PRIESTNER from the WORLD ENOUGH AND TIME podcast - to talk about THE LIFE AND LOVES OF A SHE-DEVIL. After this, I am joined by a returning ANDREW TROWBRIDGE to talk about the lighthouse-based antics in episodes of both THE GOODIES and DAD'S ARMY, which, I hope you'll agree, is quite a lot of fun. We actually ran out of time for this topic (I kid you not!) and (because we never like to waste good content) one or two of the pieces we recorded are bound to turn up in a future episode. PLEASE NOTE - For Copyright reasons, musical content has to be removed for the podcast edition. All the spoken word content remains (mostly) as it was in the broadcast version. Hopefully this won't spoil your enjoyment of the show.

Today’s topic for our super-secret counter-intelligent Spy podcast is The Avengers! No, not that Avengers, the serialized British television show The Avengers, which ran from 1961 to 1969. The Avengers, a kind of satirical, stylized drama, played on the more lighthearted aspects of the Cold War, the space race and the Youthquake. In terms of tone, The Avengers is more Dr. Who than James Bond. The show follows the adventures of John Steed, a British spy, who works for a shadowy organization run by Mother and Father. Throughout the show he is partnered with, at first a forgettable male doctor, and then several far-more-competent, female super-spies, of whom Emma Peel is likely the most famous. The fashion of the era, was an important part of the style and look of the show and many mod designers, such as Pierre Cardin, lent their skills or design to the costuming. While it might be easy to assume that the Avengers only made use of fashion for Cathy Gale, Emma Peel or Tara King, who exemplified different parts of that swinging Mod style, the character of John Steed represents an important part of 1960s fashion, the rise of the Edward Dandy. We’re gonna talk about it all today, or almost all of it, or maybe only a few seasons of it, but we’re definitely going to talk about it a lot. Not to be missed   This title was released in September 2018. It will be exclusively available to buy from the BF website until October 31st 2018, and on general sale after this date. Two agents are dead, and their murderers sound worryingly familiar. A killer gorilla is on the loose, a deadly disease is ravaging a distant country and an eminent doctor has been kidnapped. It's all pretty much business as usual. But when John Steed is called in by his old boss and given an appalling task to complete, at the same time as Tara is given one that's even worse, it becomes clear that the myriad threads of a terrifying scheme are drawing together. The fate of the world hangs in the balance. Steed won't be able to handle this case alone. The Avengers are needed. All of them.
