In this compelling episode, Dr. Vera Tarman interviews Dr. Thomas Seyfried, a pioneer in the field of cancer metabolism. Dr. Seyfried challenges the mainstream view of cancer as a genetic disease and presents strong evidence that cancer is fundamentally a mitochondrial metabolic disorder. Dr. Thomas N. Seyfried is a distinguished American biologist and professor at Boston College, renowned for his pioneering work in cancer metabolism. With a Ph.D. in Genetics and Biochemistry from the University of Illinois, Urbana, and postdoctoral training in neurochemistry at Yale University School of Medicine, Dr. Seyfried has dedicated his career to exploring the metabolic underpinnings of cancer and other neurological diseases. Dr. Seyfried is best known for his groundbreaking book, Cancer as a Metabolic Disease: On the Origin, Management, and Prevention of Cancer (2012), where he presents compelling evidence that cancer is primarily a mitochondrial metabolic disorder rather than a genetic one. This perspective builds upon the early 20th-century findings of Otto Warburg, who observed that cancer cells rely heavily on fermentation for energy production, even in the presence of oxygen—a phenomenon known as the Warburg effect. Dr. Seyfried's research suggests that targeting cancer's metabolic dependencies, such as glucose and glutamine, through dietary interventions like the ketogenic diet, could offer non-toxic therapeutic strategies. We explore: How cancer cells fuel themselves differently from healthy cells The connection between sugar, ultra-processed foods (UPFs), and cancer growth The Warburg Effect and the roles of glucose and glutamine in tumor development Whether refined sugar is carcinogenic like tobacco Why Dr. Seyfried believes ketogenic diets and caloric restriction can be powerful cancer therapies How his views align with metabolic psychiatry (Dr. Chris Palmer's Brain Energy) The controversial yet promising approach of "press-pulse" therapy The potential for preventing cancer through dietary change Follow: https://www.bc.edu/bc-web/schools/morrissey/departments/biology/people/faculty-directory/thomas-seyfried.html https://tomseyfried.com The content of our show is educational only. Today, I am blessed to have Dr. Thomas Seyfried here with me. Thomas N. Seyfried received his Ph.D. in Genetics and Biochemistry from the University of Illinois, Urbana, in 1976. He did his undergraduate work at the University of New England, where he recently received the distinguished Alumni Achievement Award. He also holds a Master's degree in Genetics from Illinois State University. Thomas Seyfried served with distinction in the United States Army's First Cavalry Division during the Vietnam War and received numerous medals and commendations. He was a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Neurology at the Yale University School of Medicine and then served on the faculty as an Assistant Professor in Neurology. Dr. Seyfried argues that cancer is a metabolic disease, not a genetic one, and suggests that lifestyle factors play a role in its development. He highlights that if you wanted to get cancer, you would adopt a sedentary lifestyle, consume highly processed foods with long shelf lives, avoid fresh food, experience high levels of emotional stress, and deprive yourself of sleep. He notes that many people engage in these behaviors unknowingly, leading to increased rates of cancer, diabetes, obesity, and other chronic diseases. Seyfried's point is that to prevent cancer, individuals should focus on maintaining metabolic health through exercise, proper diet, stress management, and quality sleep. Dr. Seyfried highlights that the current medical understanding of cancer is rooted in the idea that it is a genetic disease, a concept taught in medical schools and upheld by oncologists. These professionals are trained to use traditional treatments like chemotherapy and radiation, focusing on managing toxicity rather than addressing the root cause. Seyfried argues that cancer is a metabolic disease driven by glucose and glutamine, but this crucial information is missing from training. He emphasizes the need for metabolic therapy, which targets the fuels cancer cells depend on while keeping healthy cells thriving, notably through ketosis. He expresses frustration at the medical community's resistance to acknowledging this approach despite mounting evidence that metabolic interventions could starve cancer cells and slow tumor growth. Tune in as Dr. Seyfried explains that while animals are hardwired to eat for survival, humans, with conscious awareness, can override this instinct, which can lead to disorders like anorexia. He highlights that modern diets, full of processed carbohydrates and fats, are far removed from what our ancestors ate, causing health issues like obesity, type 2 diabetes, and cancer. Additionally, he critiques the financial burden of cancer treatments, calling the system immoral, especially for the economically disadvantaged. “A rapid advance in technology with a slower catchup in biology”. That simple but profound fact is at the crux of cancer. Week after week I walk into offices with dinosaur toys for my clients. Why? Because of exactly what Professor Thomas Seyfried will explain today - urban humans are evolutionary victims of the abundance of energy available, and storing all this excess, engineered and genetically modified energy is making us sick. It's giving us cancer. But there's good news - we have everything we need to beat cancer today. Thomas N. Seyfried received his Ph.D. in Genetics and Biochemistry, and is currently a professor at Boston College. He is a many time award winning professor, chair of various committees and editorial boards, and has over 150 peer-reviewed publications and is the author of the book, “Cancer as a Metabolic Disease: On the Origin, Management, and Prevention of Cancer” (Wiley, 1st ed., 2012). The book presents extensive research that cancer can be best defined as a mitochondrial metabolic disease rather than as a genetic disease. This new concept has implications for the development of new non-toxic cancer therapies including the ketogenic diet.Join us as we explore:Why Professor Seyfried believes the reasons behind the rise in cancer are not a mystery, and can be precisely pinpointed. Why the medical and academic establishmenst are getting cancer all wrong, and despite billions of dollars spent in “the war on cancer” more people die everyday than the day before, with about 70 people per hour in the US.The what's and how's everyone can do to today to give themselves the best chance of preventing cancer - there's two huge ones! How the lives of wolves and domestic dogs clearly demonstrate the story of cancer in the modern age.The two pronged attack Professor Seyfried believes can successfully target any cancer. Miriam Kalamian is a nutrition consultant, educator, and author specializing in the implementation of ketogenic therapies. She earned her master of education (EdM) from Smith College and her master of human nutrition (MS) from Eastern Michigan University. She is board certified in nutrition (CNS) by the Board for Certification of Nutrition Specialists. Inspired by the work of Thomas N. Seyfried, PhD, Miriam draws on a decade of experience to provide comprehensive guidelines that specifically address the many diet and lifestyle challenges associated with a cancer diagnosis.Miriam is a leading voice in the keto movement. Her passion for helping others implement this diet comes directly from her personal experience. Her son Raffi was diagnosed with a brain tumor in December 2004. Standard of care therapies failed to stop the relentless progression of his disease, and it became painfully clear that she needed to switch gears quickly. That is what originally led her to Dr. Thomas Seyfried's research supporting the use of the ketogenic diet for cancer.Beyond cancer, Miriam integrates nutritional strategies with metabolic therapies and lifestyle modifications to develop personalized treatments that address a broad spectrum of conditions that are currently considered intractable, including age-related, neurodegenerative, and bariatric diseases.
Susan Wadia-Ells is a long-time cultural change agent, writer and investigative reporter. After watching several close friends die from metastatic breast cancer, Wadia-Ells decided to use her research skills to try and understand why so many women continue to develop this disease. She also wanted to find ways that could protect herself and others from this devastating disease. In 2008 she began to chronical her research by writing the column, “Honest Health,” published by the Gloucester Daily Times (MA). This initial work was followed by her 2013 e-book, Birth Control Drugs and Breast Cancer: Learn the Terrible Truth. After discovering the 2012 ground-breaking textbook, Cancer as a Metabolic Disease, by the eminent Boston College geneticist, Dr Thomas N. Seyfried, Wadia-Ells now understood the origin of each woman's initial breast cancer cell. With this concrete theory in hand, she was able to explain in clear language the many controversial topics discussed in her best-selling book, Busting Breast Cancer: Five Simple Steps to Keep Breast Cancer out of Your Body. https://www.bustingbreastcancer.com

"These tumour cells don't know what hit them; they're struggling for their own existence."—Thomas N Seyfried We are joined by Professor Thomas N Seyfried, PhD—Professor of Biology at Boston College, Massachusetts, US—for an extended interview on his groundbreaking work into Cancer as a Metabolic Disease. In Professor Seyfried's view, cancer is best understood as a metabolic disease centred in mitochondrial dysfunction rather than primarily as a genetic disease (although, of course, genetic predispositon plays its part). This unconventional, but well-evidenced, concept promises to open the door to non-toxic cancer therapies using repurposed drugs in targeted ways (either instead of, or in addition to, chemotherapy and radiotherapy) in conjunction with ketogenic dietary strategies. New 2022 - Cancer As A Metabolic Disease: Implications For Novel Therapeutics - Thomas N. Seyfried, PhD Dr. Thomas Seyfried, • Contact: thomas.seyfried@bc.edu • Book – Cancer as a Metabolic Disease #ThomasSeyfried#Cancer #MetabolicDisease Dr. Thomas Seyfried, is a professor and author publishing a groundbreaking book; Cancer as a Metabolic Disease: On the Origin, Management, and Prevention of Cancer. This book addresses controversies related to the origins of cancer and provides solutions to cancer management and prevention. It expands upon Otto Warburg's well-known theory that all cancer is a disease of energy metabolism. However, Warburg did not link his theory to the "hallmarks of cancer" and thus his theory was discredited. This book aims to provide evidence, through case studies, that cancer is primarily a metabolic disease requiring metabolic solutions for its management and prevention. Support for this position is derived from critical assessment of current cancer theories. Brain cancer case studies are presented as a proof of principle for metabolic solutions to disease management, but similarities are drawn to other types of cancer, including breast and colon, due to the same cellular mutations that they demonstrate. The book also provides extensive information showing that cancer can be best defined as a mitochondrial metabolic disease rather than as a genetic disease. This new concept has implications for the development of new non-toxic cancer therapies including the ketogenic diet. Experts in the cancer research field have praised this comprehensive study as one of science's hottest topics. Dr. Thomas Seyfried received his Ph.D. in Genetics and Biochemistry from the University of Illinois, Urbana. He did his undergraduate work at the University of New England, where he recently received the distinguished Alumni Achievement Award. He has a Master's degree in Genetics from Illinois State University. Thomas Seyfried served with distinction in the United States Army's during the Vietnam War and received numerous medals and commendations. He was a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Neurology at the Yale University School of Medicine and then served on the faculty as an Assistant Professor in Neurology. Other awards and honors have come from such diverse organizations as the American Oil Chemists Society, the National Institutes of Health, The American Society for Neurochemistry, and the Ketogenic Diet Special Interest Group of the American Epilepsy Society. Dr. Seyfried previously served as Chair, Scientific Advisory Committee for the National Tay-Sachs and Allied Diseases Association and presently serves on several editorial boards, including those for Nutrition & Metabolism, Neurochemical Research, the Journal of Lipid Research, and ASN Neuro, where he is a Senior Editor. Dr. Seyfried has over 150 peer-reviewed publications and is the author of the book “Cancer as a Metabolic Disease: On the Origin, Management, and Prevention of Cancer (Wiley Press).”To Contact Dr Thomas N. Professor Thomas Seyfried has published over 150 peer reviewed studies in biology and cancer biology and has verified Nobel Prize Winner Otto Warburg's assertation that cancer is a metabolic disease of the mitochondria, not a genetic disorder. If we misunderstand the origin of the disease, the treatment is going to be wrong as well, and this is exactly what has happened. Ever think about why the cancer rates have tripled in the past 40 years? Well, this is why. Thomas N. Seyfried received his Ph.D. in Genetics and Biochemistry from the University of Illinois, Urbana, in 1976. What if everything we have been told about breast cancer prevention is wrong? Dr. Susan Wadia-Ells, author of the new book, Busting Breast Cancer: Five Simple Steps to Keep Breast Cancer Out of Your Body, has combined decades of ignored statistical studies with the recently published metabolic theory of cancer, to help women learn how to block most breast cancer from taking form in their bodies. Tune in to learn more about: Why 75 percent of US women are now overweight or obese, causing the US to have the highest breast cancer rates in the world, no matter one's age. Why year-round outdoor/indoor tanning and taking 5,000-10,000 IUs of D3 supplements daily, can block most breast cancer from happening. What is causing today's growing, but still unreported, metastatic breast cancer epidemic that is reaping billions, annually, for the cancer industry After losing three close friends to recurrent metastatic breast cancer, Dr Wadia-Ells decided to try and understand how to best protect herself and other women from developing breast cancer. In 2013 she discovered the newly published book, Cancer as a Metabolic Disease: On the Origin, Management and Prevention of Cancer, by Dr. Thomas N. Seyfried, the eminent Boston College biologist. Now understanding the exact biological steps that suffocate our cell's power batteries or mitochondria to create that first cancer cell, as described in Dr Seyfried, textbook, Dr Wadia-Ells was now able to develop the Five Simple Steps for effective breast cancer prevention. These steps include: losing all excess body fat; raising vitamin D3 blood levels above 60 ng/ml; avoiding all birth control drugs, IUDs and menopausal relief drugs that contain the man-made chemical progestin; keeping one's body detoxified of hormone-like chemicals found in food, water, air, furniture and personal care products, and having an annual thermogram to monitor any pre-cancerous inflammation in breast tissue. Together, her five simple steps and the metabolic theory of cancer tell us why one woman develops breast cancer, while another woman never will. To support the development of effective non-toxic metabolic protocols to treat early stage and metastatic cancer, Dr. Wadia-Ells has committed 20 percent of her book's profits to the Foundation for Metabolic Cancer Therapies. Thomas N. Seyfried, Ph.D., is the author of “Cancer as a Metabolic Disease,” a work that has revolutionized our understanding of cancer metabolism. Prof. Seyfried's 45 years of laboratory work has revived Otto Warburg's thesis that cancer is a disease of the mitochondria, the energy-generating part of the cell. Prof. Seyfried has devised unique animal models to explain the processes of inflammation, blood vessel formation, and lipid biochemistry. He is also mainly responsible for the renewed interest in calorie restriction, fasting, and ketogenic diets. In the process, he has waged war against the faltering dogma that cancer is a genetic disease. For more information, visit themossreport.com
Seyfried, PhD, Miriam draws on a decade of experience to provide comprehensive guidelines that specifically address the many diet and lifestyle challenges associated with a cancer diagnosis. Miriam is a leading voice in the keto movement. Thomas Seyfried’s research supporting the use of the ketogenic diet for cancer. Beyond cancer, Miriam integrates nutritional strategies with metabolic therapies and lifestyle modifications to develop personalized treatments that address a broad spectrum of conditions that are currently considered intractable, including age-related, neurodegenerative, and bariatric diseases.

Cancer is painted as a multi-faceted and complicated disease that has many forms. However, there seems to be one common theme in all cancers which plays a massive role in combating it. In this podcast, we delve into this mechanistic behavior of cancer cells. Bio: Thomas N. Seyfried received his Ph.D. in Genetics and Biochemistry from the University of Illinois, Urbana, in 1976.
